  1. The International Day of Older Persons was observed on 1stOctober across the world which has also marked the 25thanniversary. The theme for year 2015 was -Sustainability and Age Inclusiveness in the Urban Environment-. The United Nations General Assembly declared 1st October to observe as International Day of Older Persons in December 1990.

  2. Indian-American Karthik Chandran, currently working as associate professor of Earth and Environmental Engineering at Columbia Engineering, won prestigious 2015 MacArthur Fellowwith a -Genius Grant- for his work in transforming wastewater from pollutant into useful resources such as energy sources, fertilizers and commodity chemicals. The award carries cash reward of USD 625,000.

  1. New Delhi will host G20 summit in 2018 and India will chair the annual forum that year, as per the decision taken by G20 forum in September 2015 which was chaired by Turkey. Turkey will hand over the Chair to China for 2016 and Germany will chair the same summit in 2017. G20 is a forum where leaders of G20 nations meet and discuss about financial and economic cooperation.

  2. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has launched Green Highways (Plantation, Transplantation, Beautification and Maintenance) Policy-2015 to promote greening of National Highway corridors across India.The key aim of the policy is to reduce the impact of air pollution and dust by planting trees and shrubs along the National Highways. The entire progress and plantation status will be monitored by the monitoring agency by conducting site visit on regular intervals.

  3. V Shanmuganthan has sworn in as the 17th Governor of Manipur at a ceremony held at Raj Bhawan in Imphal. He succeeded Dr. Syed Ahmed who passed away last month. Currently He is Governor of Meghalaya and was given additional charge of Manipur by President Pranab Mukherjee after death of Dr. Syed Ahmed.

  4. The city of Coventry honored leading Indian industrialist Ratan Tatawith its highest award Honorary Freeman Of city of Coventry at the University of Warwick, Coventry for his contributions to the West Midlands region of central England. Only 13 people have been conferred this award since 1914 including Indian -origin professor Kumar Bhattacharyya, founder of Warwick manufacturing group.

  5. Famous Indian tennis player Sania Mirza along with Swiss partner Martina Hingis continued her superb run as they won their seventh title together by winning the Wuhan Open women-s doubles trophy this week. They defeated the Romanian team of Irina Camelia Begu and Monica Niculescu by 6-2, 6-3 in the final match.

  1. Three scientists from Japan, China and Ireland jointly won the Nobel Prize for Medicine today. They worked on the development of potent new drugs against parasitic diseases such as malaria and elephantiasis.Irish-born William Campbell and Japanese Satoshi Omura won half of the prize for discovering avermectin, a derivative of which has been used to treat hundreds of millions of people with river blindness and lymphatic filariasis, or elephantiasis. China's Youyou Tu won the other half of the prize for discovering artemisinin, a drug that has slashed malaria deaths and has become the mainstay of fighting the mosquito-borne disease.

  2. American world number one Golf Player Jordan Spieth was named as the PGA Tour's Player of the Year after winning two major victories among his five wins in 2014-15. He, aged 22, is an American professional golfer on the PGA Tour, and world number one in the World Golf Ranking.

  3. China won the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Championship title by defeating Philippines team by 78-67 in the final match this weekend.With this, China secures direct qualification for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

  1. India and Germany signed 18 MoUs during visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel today in various sectors including renewable energy, skill development, higher education, civil aviation, railways, food safety and promotion of German language in India and modern Indian languages in Germany.The MOUs were signed in presence of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  2. Indian PSU Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) established the world-s highest terrestrial centre at 17,600 feet above sea level at Changla near Pengong Lake in Ladakh. It will serve as a natural cold storage for preserving rare and endangered medical plants and will act as an important utility for research work in frontal areas of food and agriculture and bio-medical sciences for wellbeing of the soldiers deployed in high altitude cold desert.

  3. Ashish Bahuguna, the Chairman of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), was given an additional charge of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FSSAI. He succeeded Yudhvir Singh Malik who was shifted to NITI Aayog as an Additional Secretary in September 2015. He will hold the position of CEO until a new appointment is made for the position.

  4. India-s e-commerce giant, Flipkart has appointed Sriram Venkataraman as the new Chief Finance Officer (CFO) and Pramod Jain as Vice President and Head of Taxation. Sriram Venkataraman, in his new role, will watch over all aspects of the finance function for CP. He will also be responsible to drive the CP business to deliver its goals while Pramod Jain will lead the tax department with the aim of improving engagement with revenue and government authorities.

  5. Shashank Manohar has been elected unopposed as President of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the second term during Special General Meeting (SGM) of BCCI. He succeeded Jagmohan Dalmiya who passed away recently after served as BCCI President for 7 months from March 2015. Earlier he had served as the 29th President of the BCCI from 2008 to 2011. He is known for his impeccable clean image and track record and integrity. With his new role, he promised to clean all spot fixing issues within BCCI.

  1. World Habitat Day was observed on 5thOctober across the world to raise awareness about the state of human settlements and the future of cities. As per United Nations, it is observed on first Monday of October every year. The theme for 2015 was -Public spaces for all-.

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) through Resolution 40/202 had established World Habitat Day in 1985 and it was first celebrated in 1986 with the theme -Shelter is My Right-. The purpose of the day is to reflect on the state of our cities and towns and the basic human right to adequate shelter. It also aims to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the habitat of future generations.

  1. Takaaki Kajita of Japan and Arthur McDonald of Canada have jointly won the Nobel Prize 2015 in Physics for the discovery of neutrino oscillations, as per announcement made by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.The two researchers had made key contributions to experiments showing that neutrinos change identities.

As per the academy, -The discovery has changed our understanding of the innermost workings of matter and can prove crucial to our view of the universe". Kajita is director of the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research and Professor at the University of Tokyo. McDonald is a Professor Emeritus at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada.

  1. Micro blogging site Twitter has appointed its co-founder and interim chief executive officer (CEO) Jack Dorsey as permanent CEO for second time. He succeeded Dick Costolo who had resigned in June this 2015 after serving as CEO for five years.

He had earlier served as Twitter-s president and CEO from May 2007 to October 2008. Post October 2008, he was also the Chairman of the board of members of Twitter. Twitter also has appointed Adam Bain as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the company.

  1. DuPont Chief Executive Officer Ellen Kullman has resigned and will step down this month. She will be replaced temporarily by board member Edward Breen, who oversaw the break-up of conglomerate Tyco International Plc. Kullman joined the company more than 27 years ago and has been its CEO since 2009.

Swedish Tomas Lindahl, American Paul Modrich and Turkish-born Aziz Sancar have been chosen for the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discoveries in DNA repair, as per announcement made by the Nobel Committee.Their work uncovered the mechanisms used by cells to repair damaged DNA - a fundamental process in living cells.

Prof Lindahl has worked in the UK, Paul Modrich is professor of Biochemistry at Duke University in North Carolina and Turkish-born biochemist Aziz Sancar is professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, US.

  1. Raif Badawi, the blogger from Saudi Arabia, was named the 2015 International Writer of Courage and the joint winner of the PEN Pinter Prizetoday along with British poet and literary critic James Fenton. He was sentenced to 1,000 lashes for his liberal writings.

Fenton officially accepted the 2015 PEN Pinter Prize While, due to Badawi's imprisonment, his award was accepted by Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia and campaigner for Raif Badawi.

  1. Russian Chess player Sergey Karjakin won 2015 World Cup Chess Championshipheld at Baku, Azerbaijan. He defeated Peter Svidler (Russia) by 6-4 score in the final match. He also holds the record for being world-s youngest Chess Grandmaster at the age young of 12 years and 7 months.

  1. Union cabinet has approved a proposal to build aNational War Memorial and Museum near India Gate in New Delhi today. The memorial will be in the in memory of 22,500 soldiers who sacrificed their lives while in the line of duty post-independence.

The Cabinet also cleared 3 new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences which will be established at Nagpur in Maharashtra, Manglagiri in Andhra Pradesh and at Kalyani in West Bengal under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. The cost will be nearly Rs. 5,000 crore.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved National Watershed Management Project-Neeranchal with an outlay of Rs. 2142 crore. It will ensure access to irrigation to every farmland help achieve objectives of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana for efficient use of water. Also Union cabinet has approved a proposal for Non Gazetted Railways employees to get 78-day wages as productivity-linked bonus for the fiscal 2014-15.

  1. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Conference 2016 will be held in New Delhi from 8thJanuary to 10thJanuary 2016. The Conference 2016 will be organised with an objective for developing a new paradigm for engagement with the Diaspora over the next decade.

  2. International Monetary Fund, IMF, has projected India-s economic growth rate at 7.5% in 2016 compared to China's growth rate of 6.3%, in its latest World Economic Outlook Update. IMF also said growth in India is expected to rise above the rates in other major emerging market economies. The report said the growth will benefit from recent policy reforms, a consequent pickup in investment, and lower commodity prices. On Inflation the report, said in India, it is expected to decline further in 2015, reflecting the fall in global oil and agricultural commodity prices.

The report also projects global growth rate for 2015 at 3.1%, which is 0.3% than in 2014, and 0.2% lower than the forecasts in the July 2015 World Economic Outlook (WEO) Update.

Belarusian writer and journalist Svetlana Alexievich has been chosen for the 2015 Nobel Prize in literature.With this, she has become the 14th woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in its history.Her best known works in English translation included Voices from Chernobyl, an oral history of the nuclear catastrophe; and Zinky Boys, a collection of first-hand accounts from the Soviet-Afghan war.

  2. Hoesung Lee of South Korea has been elected Chairman of Inter-governmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) during its on-going 42nd session in Dubrovnik, Croatia.He succeeds environmentalist R.K. Pachauri of India who had resigned following his involvement in a sexual abuse scandal.

Currently, he professor in the economics of climate change, energy and sustainable development. He has been associated with IPCC in various capacities including as Co-Chair of Working Group III for Second Assessment Report of 1992.

The Indian Air Force observed its 83rd anniversary on 8thOctober and the day was celebrated through enthralling air display by several aircraft at the Air Force Day Parade cum Investiture Ceremony at Air Force Station Hindon in Ghaziabad. The Indian Air Force was established on 8th October 1932.

Chief General Dalbir Singh and Chief of Naval staff R K Dhowan were present at the event. Indian Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who was present at the occasion, became the first sportsperson to be made an honorary group captain in the Indian Air Force.

Four Tunisian civil society groups have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for year 2015 for their contribution to the country-s transition from dictatorship to democracy.The Nobel panel described its award to the National Dialogue Quartet as an -encouragement to the Tunisian people- that showed the value of dialogue in a region riven by conflict. These groups have saved the country from crisis after drafting a political roadmap.

  2. British economist Angus Deaton has been chosen for the 2015 Nobel Prize in Economics -for his analysis of consumption, poverty, and welfare.-He is a professor in the Economics Department at Princeton University, where he looks at the determinants of health in rich and poor countries, as well as on the measurement of poverty in India and around the world.

  3. Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist)-CPN-UML was elected as new Prime Minister of Nepal and he became first Prime Minister of Nepal under the newly adopted secular, republic and federal Constitution of Himalayan country. In Nepalese Parliament, he received 338 votes out of a total of 598 to be elected as PM.

  4. British brewing giant SABMiller agreed a takeover bid by the world's biggest beer producer Anheuser-Busch InBev in a deal worth about 71 billion GBP or USD 109 billion. Belgian-Brazilian group AB InBev, the maker of Budweiser and Stella Artois lagers, struck a deal with SABMiller at its fifth attempt. As a part of the deal, AB InBev will pay 44 GBP per share of SABMiller which was slightly better than the fourth deal of around GBP 43.50.

  5. UK-s third largest bank Barclays PLC is all set to name former JPMorgan Chase banker Jes Staley as chief executive, who will replace current CEO Antony Jenkins. Staley ran JPMorgan's investment bank and asset management business and had been at the bank for 34 years before leaving in early 2013 to join BlueMountain.

  6. Lewis Hamilton has won the Russian Formula One Grand Prix held in Sochi on 11thOctober. With this win, Hamilton passed the legendary Ayrton Senna-s record of 41 wins and extended his lead over others.Ferrari-s Sebastian Vettel secured second position and Sergio Pérez of Force India-Mercedes secured third position in the same race.

  1. Sekhar Basu, director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), was appointed as the chairman of Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) last week and he will also occupy the office of secretary, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).He succeeds RK Sinha who superannuates later this month.

He is currently working as the director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai and also Chief Executive of Nuclear Recycle Board (NRB). For his contributions to the Indian nuclear energy programme at various levels, he was conferred with several awards and honours including Indian Nuclear Society Award in 2002, DAE Special Achievement Award in 2007 and Padma Shri in 2014.

  1. Oscar-winning Indian Music Director and Composer AR Rahman was chosen for the Cultural Ambassador of Seychelles for his contribution in enhancing the country-s Art and Culture Development. AR Rahman has won two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe, besides national recognition in his long career.

  2. Famous Malayalam filmmaker I.V. Sasi was awarded with the prestigious J.C. Daniel Award for the year 2014 for his contributions towards the Malayalam film industry. He has made over 150 Indian films in various languages and genres. His film Aaroodam won the Nargis Dutt Award for the best feature film on National Integration in 1982.

  3. P S Jayakumar, the former chief executive of VBHC Value Homes, took charge as the new MD and CEO of the state-owned Bank of Baroda for three years during a crisis time when the PSU bankis under the investigation for an alleged fraud and black money transactions worth over Rs 6,000 crore.

  4. India-s second largest IT Services Company, Infosys has appointed Ranganath D Mavinakere as new Chief Financial Officer (CFO).He will succeed current CFO of Infosys Rajiv Bansal who had resigned from the company for personal reasons. Before this, Mavinakere was EVP and head of strategic operations and CEO-s office of Infosys.

He holds a post graduate diploma in management (PGDM) degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and M Tech degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. He has rich experience of about 18 years across banking and IT services industries including 15 years in Infosys.

  1. Senior IAS officer Girish Shankarhas been appointed as Secretary of Department of Official Languageunder Home Ministry. Currently he is working as an Additional Secretary in the Tourism Ministry.

  2. Nippon Life Insurance has signed an agreement to increase its stake in Reliance Capital Asset Management (RCAM), part of Reliance Capital, by 14% from its current stake of 35% to 49%.Nippon Life Insurance will invest around Rs 1,196 crore to acquire additional 14% stake.

  3. The Reliance Power Ltd of the Anil Ambani Group has appointed N Venugopala Rao as its CEO. Before that, he was earlier CEO of Sasan Power, a subsidiary of the company. He is a power sector professional with over 34 years of experience in project development, project finance, project planning and contracts management. Under his leadership, all the six units of the Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project were put into operation.

  4. Famous music director and lyricist Ravindra Jain passed away on 9thOctober 2015 following a multiple-organ failure in Mumbai. He was 71. He started his musical journey in Bollywood in the 1970s. Since then, he has composed music for almost 150 movies apart from working with Sagar Films for their television series. He has also been conferred with various awards for his work including Filmfare Award, Lata Mangeshkar Lifetime Achievement Award of Maharashtra Government and Padmashri in 2015.

  5. Famous Tamil actress Gopishantha, popularly known by her stage name Manorama, passed away on 10thOctober due to multiple organ failure in Chennai. She was 78. She acted in over 1500 movies in her career spanning almost six decades. She also won a Guinness World Record for acting in more than 1000 number of films. She was awarded with the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the movie Pudhiya Pathai in 1989 and also honoured by the Government of India with Padma Shri in 2002.

  6. Extending their incredible unbeaten record, Sania Mirza and Martina won the WTA China Open after defeating sixth seed Taipei duo Hao-Ching Chan and Yung-Jan Chanby 6-7 (9) 6-1 10-8 in the final match held on 10thOctober. This is their eighth trophy of the season and fourth consecutive win.

  1. Jamaican author Marlon James was chosen for the Man Booker Prize 2015 for his novelfor his novel A Brief History of Seven Killings, inspired by the attempted assassination of Bob Marley in the 1970s.With this, he has become the first Jamaican author to win the Man Booker Prize.

James was honoured with the prize money of 50000 Euros, a trophy and a designer bound edition of his book. He was also awarded with additional 2500 Euros for being shortlisted for the prize. His name was shortlisted from a list of writers including Sunjeev Sahota, Chigozie Obioma, Hanya Yanagihara, Anne Tyler, Tom McCarthy and Marlon James.

  1. China has officially started operation of the Zam Hydropower Station built on Brahmaputra River in Tibet which has raised concerns in India as it may disrupt water supplies of the River. The dam is also the world-s highest-altitude hydropower station and it will produce 2.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year.

  2. Famous striker Cristiano Ronaldo has been awarded with Golden Boot award for 2014-15 season for a record fourth time. He scored 48 goals in the last season. With this win, Ronaldo becomes the first player in the awards' 47-year history to win the award four times. He defeated Lionel Messi who scored 43 goals in the last season.

  1. Indian Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi has been awarded with the prestigious Harvard Humanitarian of the Year Award by the Harvard University. The awardis given to an individual whose works and deeds have served to improve the quality of lives and have inspired us to greater heights. T

The award has been conferred upon some famous persons including: former UN Secretary- Generals Kofi Annan, Boutros Boutros-Ghali and Javier Perez de Cuellar; and Nobel laureates Jose Ramos-Horta, Bishop Desmond Tutu, John Hume and Elie Wiesel; Ethel Kennedy and R C Gorman.

  1. India has been ranked the most attractive investment destination in the world for the next three years, as per an EY Survey published today. 32% of the business leaders from global corporations who were polled for the survey said India is the most attractive investment destination in the world, followed by China, Southeast Asia and Brazil.

IIP grew by 6.4% in August; raises hope of recovery; Retail Inflation increases marginally
India's Index of Industrial Production, the most important parameter to judge performance of industrial sector, grew by 6.4% in August compared to 4.2% in July which raises hope of faster recovery. IIP growth stood at just 0.5% in August last year. Manufacturing sector output, which constitutes over 75% of the index, grew by 6.9% in August compared to (-) 1.1% in the same month last year. For the April-August period of the current financial year, cumulative IIP growth stood at 4.1%.
At the same time, India's Retail inflation, measured by Consumer Price Index, increased to 4.41% in September compared to 3.74% in the previous month due to higher prices of pulses and onion. Food inflation jumped to 3.88% in September from 2.20% in August. Retail inflation rose to 5.05% for rural segment and to 3.61% for urban areas in the same month.
India's overall inflation increased marginally to (-) 4.54 percent in September
India's overall inflation, measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), increased slightly to (-) 4.54% in September compared to (-) 4.95% in August. This is the eleventh consecutive time since November 2014, wholesale price index remained in the negative zone. Inflation stood at 2.38% in September last year.
Food articles inflation increased marginally to 0.69% in September compared to (-)1.13% in August due to higher prices of pulses and onions which stood at 38.56% and 113.7% higher in the same month. Inflation in Fuel and Power segment stood at (-) 17.71% in the same month which inflation for manufactured products was at (-) 1.73%.

Global Credit Rating Agency Fitch Ratings has cut Brazil's credit rating to the brink of junk and warned that Brazil could soon lose its investment grade rating due to deteriorating of government finances. Fitch cut Brazil's rating to BBB-minus from BBB which is just one notch higher of Junk status.

  2. Global tech giant Dell Inc has announced its acquisition of VMWare Inc, subsidiary of EMC Corporation, this week for around USD 67 billion which makes it-s the biggest tech deal in the history. VMware Inc is a US company that provides cloud and virtualization software and services.

The Supreme Court has permitted voluntary use of Aadhaar cards in welfare schemes including MGNREGA, all pension schemes, Government-s key scheme -Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna- along with LPG and PDS schemes.With this the Apex Court has also lifted the earlier restriction on usage of Aadhar card.

The Bench was hearing a batch of requests made by the Centre, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDIA), the Reserve Bank of India and various government regulators for securities, insurance, telecom and pension.

  1. The Supreme Courtdeclared the National Judicial Appointments Commission(NJAC) Act, 2014 and99thConstitutional Amendment Act, 2014 has unconstitutional and void which was passed by the Parliament. The act was passed to replace the 2-decade old collegium system of judges appointing judges in higher judiciary. The Supreme Court bench has held that the Collegium system will remain operative which was established by its ruling in 1993.

  2. India-s DRDO Missile Complex in Hyderabad was renamed as Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar during an event at Research Centre Imarat on the occasion of the 84th Birth Anniversary of Dr Kalam, the Missile Man. Dr Kalam joined the Missile Complex, DRDO in 1982 and worked there for nearly two decades.

The Missile Complex comprises Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL), Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Research Centre Imarat (RCI), which are considered to be the brain child of Dr Kalam.

  1. The Association for Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), the industry body for mutual funds, has appointed Leo Puri of UTI AMC as its new Chairman and retained A Balasubramanian as Vice-Chairman.Leo Puri succeeds former chairman Sundeep Sikka of Reliance AMC.

  2. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has formed a single Financial Inclusion Fund (FIF) with a corpus of Rs 2000 crore which was formed merging the Financial Inclusion Fund (FIF) and Financial Inclusion Technology Fund (FITF).The RBI also finalized the new scope of activities and guidelines for utilization of the new FIF in consultation with the Union Government. The new FIF will be administered by the reconstituted Advisory Board constituted by Union Government and will be maintained by NABARD.

  3. Zaheer Khan, India-s one of the greatest fast bowlers, has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect. He said, he is looking forward to signing off his last season in domestic cricket at the conclusion of the Indian Premier League season 9.

In 92 Test matches, Zaheer has taken 311 wickets and is fourth highest wicket-taker In Tests among Indian bowlers. He also took 282 wickets in 200 ODIs. He played a major role in India's 2011 World Cup triumph with 21 wickets in the tournament.

The UN General Assembly elected Egypt, Japan, Senegal, Ukraine and Uruguay to serve as non-permanent members on the Security Council for two-year terms, from 1stJanuary 2016 till 31stDecember 2017.The other non-permanent members, namely Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Spain and Venezuela, are expected to be in Council until the end of 2016.

  2. Nepal-s Parliament elected Nepal-s first woman speaker, UCPN-Maoist lawmaker Onsari Gharti Magar, after formation of a new government after promulgation of the Constitution.   3. India-s totalexports dropped by 24.3% in September compared to same month last per cent to USD 21.8 billion due to lower demand from developed economies. At the same time, total imports dropped by 25.4% in the same month to USD 32.3 billion. Trade deficit for the same month stood at USD 10.5 billion from 14.5 billion in the same month last year. Cumulative exports during the first half of the current fiscal year 2015-16 dropped by 17.4%.

Aditya Birla Group entered into India-s e-commerce space and launched a new online fashion store named as Abof.com with an aim to offer shoppers range of merchandise brands from its subsidiaries and other companies. -Abof- stands for Aditya Birla Online Fashion. Prashant Gupta has been appointed as the President and CEO of Abof.com.

  5. India's PV Sindhu has ended as Runner-up in the Denmark Open Badminton tournamentafter she defeated back-to-back world champion Carolina Marin 21-15, 18-21, 21-17 in the semifinal match to final. In the final match she was defeated by Olympic champion China's Xuerui Li 19-21, 12-21.

  6. The Indian junior men's hockey team finished the Sultan of Johor Cup tournament as runners up after losing by 3-4 in the penalty shot in the final match against Great Britain. The teams were level 2-2 after full time.

  2. The Haryana Government approved Swadhar Greh scheme in order to assure economic and social security to women in distress. The scheme aims at creating a supportive institutional framework catering to their primary needs in difficult situations. The scheme will help to provide basic amenities, such as shelter, food, clothing and health along with economic and social security to women in distress.

  3. Global ratings agency Standard and Poor-s (S&P) has affirmed India-s long-term sovereign credit rating at -BBB-- and short-term rating at -A-3- with a stable outlook. It warned the ratings could be downgraded if growth is lower than expected due to stalled reforms or if inflation does not remain under control. Also it has said that there is no possibility of credit rating upgrade in next two years.

  4. Real Estate online portal Housing.com has appointed Mani Rangarajan as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO).He has over 20 years of experience and has successfully played executive level roles in companies such as Yahoo! and Citigroup.

  5. India-s second largest IT Services Company Infosys announced its acquisition of US based Noah Consulting, LLC, a provider of advanced information management consulting services for the oil and gas industry for USD 70 million cash. Noah Consulting helps upstream oil and gas companies, including super majors, independents and oil field service companies plan, architect and deploy information solutions to unlock the value of their oil and gas assets.

  6. HCL Technologies has acquired Bengaluru-based privately held engineering services firm, Concept to Silicon Systems (C2SiS) for nearly USD 10 million. This acquisition will help HCL Technologies to further extend its leadership position in the semiconductor and industrial IoT industry.

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated new bank IDFC Bank in New Delhi today which started its operation from October this year. IDFC Bank was granted a banking license by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in July this year. It was founded a non-operative financial holding company (NOFHC) in 2014 to manage its five subsidiaries IDFC Bank, IDFC MF, IDFC Alternatives, IDFC IDF & IDFC Securities to conform with RBI guidelines.

  2. The Union Government has appointed sports administrator Vijay Kumar Malhotra as the President of the All India Council of Sports. His position will be in the rank of Minister of State. The council also includes former sportspersons, including PT Usha, Limba Ram, N Kunjarani Devi, IM Vijayan, Baichung Bhutia and P Gopichand. Before that, he acted as the Senior Vice President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the acting President of the IOA after the arrest of Suresh Kalmadi in connection with the alleged irregularities in awarding contracts for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

  3. India-s fourth largest IT services company, HCL Technologies, acquired Swedish vehicles company Volvo Group-s external IT business for USD 138 million in an all-cash deal. The deal will be subject to both the parties entering into binding agreement(s) and regulatory approvals.

  4. India-s cricket governing body, BCCI announced new sponsor of the Indian Premier League (IPL) title as M/S VIVOmobiles, which is a Chinese Smartphone maker. It replaced PepsiCo who pulled out from 5 year contract which was supposed to be end in 2017.

Famous batsman Virender Sehwag, known for his aggressive innings, has formally announced his retirement from international cricket, more than two-and-a-half years on from his last appearance for India.He said he would no longer play in the IPL as well.He played 104 Tests, 251 ODIs and 19 T20Is, scoring over 17,000 international runs. He also scored first a double century in ODI and scored first triple century in Tests for India.

State government signed a MoU with Singapore government agencies for preparing the master plan for Amaravati. The capital city will house state Legislative Assembly, Legislative Council, High Court, Secretariat, Raj Bhavan etc. in area covering 16.7 sq km.

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modilaid the foundation stone of Shri Venkateswara Mobile and Electronics Manufacturing Hubin Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh this week. It is India-s 1st dedicated mobile manufacturing electronics cluster which will be established in lines with Union Government-s flagship Make in India initiative. Global mobile phone manufacturing giant Foxconn has already started its operations in this hub for manufacturing of brands including Xiomi and Gionee. It will be joined by other brands including Micromax.

  3. Senior IAS officer Alok Rawathas been appointed as the 4thmember in the 5-member body of National Commission for Women (NCW) that reviews the constitutional and legal safeguards for women. With this he also became the 1stmale person to be appointed in NCW.

  4. Reliance Capital Asset Management acquired Goldman Sachs' mutual fund business in India for Rs 243 crore in an all-cash deal. As per the deal, RCAM will acquire all 12 onshore mutual fund schemes of Goldman Sachs Asset Management India with total asset under management of Rs 7132 crore, would also make Reliance MF the exclusive fund manager for the government's ambitious Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSE) Exchange Traded Fund.

  5. E-commerce firm Snapdeal has appointed Anup Vikal as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Vikal replaced Aakash Moondhra, who had quit the company earlier this month. Before this appointment, he was working as the CFO of Aircel since January 2013.

  6. Famous Kannada filmmaker Kikkeri Shamanna Lakshminarayana Swamy (KSL Swamy), popularly known Ravee, passed away in Bengaluru, Karnataka. He was also Kannada film producer, actor and playback singer.

Mugabe is the founding leader of Zimbabwe and has ruled the country since it gained independence in 1980 from United Kingdom. The prize was established in 2010 by China-s Communist Government Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.

  1. US based electronics giant Western Digital Corporation acquired another US based company SanDisk Corporation for USD 19 billion. Western Digital is a manufacturer of storage solutions that enable people to create, manage, experience and preserve digital content while SanDisk is a Fortune 500 company and is a global leader in flash storage solutions. SanDisk was co-founded by Indian-origin entrepreneur Sanjay Mehrotra in 1988.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a notification to all Scheduled Commercial Banks on implementation of the Gold Monetisation Scheme, 2015 as per notification from the Union Government.The RBI issued the direction to banks in exercise of powers conferred on it under Section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. The GMS 2015 will replace the existing Gold Deposit Scheme, 1999.

All scheduled commercial banks have been allowed to offer this scheme under which customers can deposit their gold and earn interest on it. The minimum deposit at any one time shall be raw gold (bars, coins, Jewellery excluding stones and other metals) equivalent to 30 grams of the precious metal of 995 fineness, the RBI said. There is no maximum limit for deposit under the scheme.

  1. India-s first Paragliding World Cup has started at Bir Billing in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Snow leopard is the official mascot of this World Cup. Also this is for the first time that Paragliding World Cup is being organized in a South Asian country. Indian side is represented by 8 flyers and 6 among them are from the Himachal Pradesh.

  2. Famous marine biologist Syed Zahoor Qasim passed away in New Delhi this week.He was 88. He is considered as the founder of Polar Biology in India and was part of the first Indian expedition to Antarctica in 1981-82. Based on his research, he also published around 200 original research papers in national and international journals. He was also a member of Planning Commission (1991-96) and served as the vice-chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi.

  2. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix title held in Elroy, Texas this weekend. His team-mate Nico Rosberg secured second position while Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel secured third position in the same race. Force India drive Sergio Perez secured fifth position in the race.

With this, Hamilton won the 10th title in the 2015 season and won world Formula 1 championship for the third time after winning it in 2008 and 2014.

  1. South African batsman Hashim Amla completed fastest 6000 runs in ODIs. With this, he broke record held by India's ODI vice-captain Virat Kohli. He took 123 innings compared to 136 innings took by Kohli to achieve this feat.

  3. Smartphone maker BlackBerry has appointed Narendra Nayak as the Managing Director of its India operations. He replaces Sunil Lalvani who raised in June this year. As new MD, He will be responsible for driving BlackBerry's software and services business through all channels in India.

  4. Bengali film, television and stage actor Pijush Ganguly passed away in Kolkata after meeting an accident at Santragachi near Howrah on 20thOctober. He was 50. He had started his career as an employee of NABARD and later shifted to acting career. He had acted in famous films like Goynar Baksha, Byomkesh Phire Elo,Laptop, Iti Srikanta and Mahulbanir Sereng.

  5. Indian archer Abhishek Verma created history by winning a silver medal in the Archery World Cup currently being held in Mexico City, first ever Indian to bag Archery World Cup Final medal. He was defeated Turkey's Demir Elmaagcli in the summit clash (143-145).

Another Indian archer Deepika Kumari won the silver medal in the Archery World Cup Final held in Mexico City. She was defeated 2-6 in final by South Korea-s Chou Misun.

  1. Vidya Devi Bhandari from the ruling CPN-UML has been elected as first woman President of Nepal after she defeated her rival from Nepali Congress by more than 100 votes. Bhandari, the Vice-president of CPN-UML and widow of late general secretary of the party Madan Bhandari, secured 327 votes against 214 votes of her rival Veteran Nepali Congress leader Kul Bahadur Gurung.

As per new Constitution passed in September this year, it was required to elect a new President within a month of the commencement of the Parliament session.

India has improved its position to 130thrank among 189 countries in the World Bank's 2016 rankings in terms of ease of doing business compared to 140thrank as per last year-s ranking, as per latest report entitled -Doing Business 2016: Measuring Regulatory Quality and Efficiency- published by the World Bank today. As per the report, India made the biggest improvement among the South-Asian countries in business regulations. Also the number of days to start a business was reduced to 29 days in 2015 compared to much longer 127 days in 2014. This is a significant improvement for India.

Singapore secured No 1 rank in the ranking in terms of ease of doing business followed by New Zealand, Denmark, South Korea and Hong Kong in first 5 places.

  1. The Union Government has formed RV Easwar Committee in order to simplify the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961. The committee will be headed by Justice RV Easwar (Retd.),former Judge of Delhi High Court and former President of ITAT. The members of the committee are VK Bhasin, Vinod Jain, Rajiv Memani, Ravi Gupta, Mukesh Patel, Ajay Bahl, Pradip P. Shah, Arvind Modi and Dr. Vinay Kumar Singh.

The committee will study and identify the provisions/phrases in the Act which are leading to litigation due to different interpretations and to study and identify the provisions which are impacting the ease of doing business.

  1. Students of India's premier Film and Television Institute have called off their 139 days' old strike in Pune today. Even if the strike was called off the students will continue to protest against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as chairman and also against the appointments of four other members of Governing Council. The students, who have been protesting since 12th June also said that they are not ready for any talks with government officials until these appointments are cancelled.

  2. The Government has appointed senior Indian Revenue Service officer Najib Shah as Chairman, Central Board of Excise and Customs. He was appointed as Member of the indirect taxes board in May this year. He was acting Chairman of the CBEC after Kaushal Srivastava retired in May this year.

  3. Jammu and Kashmir will host South Asian Rugby 7-S Championship in June 2016, as per announcement made by the Minister for Youth Services and Sports Molvi Imran Raza Ansari. The decision was made during the 131st Standing Committee meeting of J-K State Sports Council, which was chaired by Ansari.

As per recent2015 United Nations Asia-Pacific Disaster Report, published by United Nations today, The Asia Pacific region is the most disaster prone part of the world as it had suffered around 1,625 disasters in the decade through 2014. As per the report, disasters in Asia Pacific region accounted for 40% of the global total and claimed over half a million of lives over the decade. The disasters in past decade have affected around 1.4 billion people and caused over 523 billion dollars in economic damage which includes 772 million poor people in the region itself.

Sylvie Lucas, Luxembourg's envoy to the UN, has been appointed as the next chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on the UN Security Council (UNSC).Lucas replaces Ambassador Courtenay Rattray of Jamaica, who achieved the UNSC reform process by introducing a negotiating text that included the proposals and positions of various members on the expansion of UNSC.

  3. The Federal Reserve, Central Bank of USA, has kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged during its monetary policy review today. At the same time, the US central bank made it clear that an increase is possible in December considering better US economic growth. The Federal Reserve has kept the target for its benchmark funds rate at a record low in a range of zero to 0.25% since December 2008.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley launched the e-Sahyog pilot project to simplify the taxation procedure which aims to reduce compliance cost, especially for small taxpayers and provide an online platform to resolve mismatches in income tax returns of taxpayers. e-Sahyog supports the Central Board of Direct Taxes' (CBDT) long term objective to stop any physical meet between the taxpayers and tax authorities to resolve any discrepancy.

  2. Senior IRS officer Najib Shah has been appointed as Chairman of Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), the apex body on Indirect Taxes. He will hold the post till March 2017 till he attains retirement age of 60 years. He was also the Interim Chairman of the CBEC after retirement of Kaushal Srivastava in June 2015.

There are 21-members in Central Board of Directors of the RBI. It comprise of Governor, 4 Deputy Governors, 2 Finance Ministry representatives, 10 Directors nominated by Union Government in order to represent important elements from India-s economy and 4 directors are from local boards of RBI which are headquartered at Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and New Delhi.

Indian government was able to keep fiscal deficit within control at Rs3,78,563 crore, or 68.1% of the Budget Estimate in the first half of financial year 2015-16 due to strong growth in revenue collection. Both the fiscal and revenue deficits were significantly higher in the first half of previous financial year 2014-15 at 82.6% and 91.2% of the Budget Estimates, respectively.

Overall expenditure touched Rs 9,10,545 crore or 51.2% of the full-year target. Plan expenditure increased to Rs 2,53,816 crore or 54.6% of the budget estimate during the same period.

IndianSociologist and founder of Sulabh International Bindeshwar Pathak has been selected for the prestigious New York Global Leaders Dialogue Humanitarian Award for his contribution to sanitation and improving the quality of life for millions of manual scavengers. He will be presented with the award in April 2016 in New York. The activist first understood the difficulty of manual scavengers in 1968 when he joined the Bhangi-Mukti (scavengers- liberation) Cell of the Bihar Gandhi Centenary Celebrations Committee.

  2. Indian para-athlete Amit Kumar Saroha won silver medal in men's club throw F51 event in the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha this week. With this win, He also sealed a berth for 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. Amit won silver medal with an effort of 25.44m, slightly lower than Serbia's Zeljko Dimitrijevic who won gold with record of 26.29m.
