  1. Software giant Microsoft Corp. has officially announced that new 'Windows 10' Operating System which will replace the current operating system -Windows 8- this week. With this, Microsoft is restoring some of the more traditional ways of doing things and promises that Windows 10 will be familiar for users who are using older version of Windows operating systems.

  2. Google closed its old social networking site Orkut permanently on 30thSeptember 2014 as Google announced the decision to shut down Orkut in June this year. Orkut started in 2004 was named after its creator, Orkut Buyukkokten.


Old users of Orkut will be able to take backup of their pictures and posts till September 2016 and users can export their profile data, community posts and photos using Google Takeout. But no one will be able to create new IDs on Orkut account.


This decision was taken as Orkut could not compete with competitor social networking site Facebook and Google also launched its new social networking site Google Plus.



  1. The European Central Bank (ECB) has kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at record low of 0.05% and provided more details about its asset purchase programme.


ECB announced today that it would start buying covered bonds from this month and would continue to do so for two years. This decision was expected from the central bank considering deflation risk due to 5-year low inflation across the euro zone.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan from Valmiki Basti in New Delhi today morning with the aim of making India as a clean country by 2019, also the 150thbirth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.While addressing a huge gathering at Rajpath, Mr Modi said Mahatma Gandhi's dream of clean India is still unfulfilled and Gandhi gave the message quit India, Clean India.


He said Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is beyond politics and he asked all the citizens to take cleanliness seriously and pledge for the same. Bollywood star Amir Khan and other Ministers were also present at the ceremony and argued people to pledge for the same.



  1. India remembered -Father of Nation- Mahatma Gandhi today on his 145th birth anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other political leaders paid tributes at his memorial at Rajghat in New Delhi today.


Vice President Hamid Ansari, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh were among those who also paid homage to the Father of the Nation.



  1. Vigilance Commissioner Rajiv has been authorized to act as the chief of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) by President Pranab Mukherjee this week. He has been authorized to act as the Central Vigilance Commissioner with effect from 29thSeptember, 2014, until the appointment of the Central Vigilance Commissioner.He succeeded Central Vigilance Commissioner Pradeep Kumar who has completed his tenure on 28th September. The CVC is headed by a Central Vigilance Commissioner and has two Vigilance Commissioners.


As per the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003, in the event of any vacancy in the office of the Central Vigilance Commissioner, the President may authorize one of the Vigilance Commissioners to act as the Central Vigilance Commissioner until the appointment of a new incumbent.



  1. The US has signed an agreement with India to help India to develop three smart cities as a part of India-s recently launched 100 smart city programme. The three cities are Allahabad, Ajmer and Visakhapatnam.


Also the USA join hands civil society and authorities to provide clean water and sewage facilities in 500 cities in the country. These announcements were made after the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and USA President Barack Obama recently.



  1. Indian hockey team won the gold medal at the Asian Games today after defeating defending champion Pakistan in the final match in penalty shootout. Also Indian team secured berth for upcoming 2016 Rio Olympic.This win ended India's 16 yearlong for the Asian Games Gold in Hockey.


The women's 4x400m relay team also won the yellow metal as Indian contingent added three more medals today at the Asian Games.



  1. Indian boxer M C Mary Kom became the first Indian woman boxer to win a gold medal at the Asian Games after she defeated Kazakhstan's Zhaina Shekerbekova in the final of flyweight (51KG) category yesterday. This is also her first Gold medal at the Asian Games after winning medal at the recently concluded Olympic.

  2. At the same time, another Indian boxer L Sarita Devi stunned officials and spectators by refusing to accept the bronze medal in order to protest a controversial decision by the judges in her semifinal match.


Sarita had lost her semi-final match in controversial circumstances and won the bronze medal in the women's light weight (57-60kg) event though she was dominant in the match, but she refused to accept the model. Indian management team lodged an official protest with the International Boxing Association's technical jury team but it was rejected.



  1. Kolkata Knight Riders entered the final of Champions League Twenty20 cricket tournament today after defeating Australian team Hobart Hurricanes in the first semi-final matchheld at Hyderabad. While batting first Hobart Hurricanes scored 140 runs in 20 overs which KKR team successfully chased in 20thovers, securing win by 7 wickets.


In second semifinal match played today, Chennai Siper Kings defeated Kings Eleven Punjab team by 65 runs. Both the winners play the final match for the title.

  1. The US unemployment rate dropped to six year low of 5.9% in September compared to 6.1% in the previous month of August. This is the lowest unemployment rate since July 2008.


US job market has added 248,000 jobs in last month which confirms improve job market condition of the world-s largest economy.



  1. China has test fired an upgraded version of its nuclear capable Dongfeng missile with a strike range of 10,000-km in September.The People-s Liberation Army (PLA) launched a Dongfeng-31B from the Wuzhai Missile and Space Test Centre, as per the US media reports.

An Indian-American Stanford University professor, Thomas Kailath, has been shortlisted among 10 innovators to receive US National Medal of Science announced by USA President Barack Obama for their contribution to the field of science. He is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan and is a member of major science and engineering academies in India.


He will receive the award for achievement and leadership in advancing the fields of science at a White House ceremony later this year. This award has been given every year to people who have made outstanding contributions in the field on Science.



  1. 33 people have been killed and more than a dozen injured in a tragic stampede occurred at Gandhi Maidan during the Ram Leela ceremony in Patna yesterday. The incident happened when people were leaving the ground after watching the Ravan Badh ceremony.

  2. India-s forex reserves dropped by USD 1.41 billion in the week ended 26thSeptember to USD 314.18 billion, as per weekly report published by the RBI. The drop was mainly due to drop in foreign currency assets which dropped by USD 1.39 billion to USD 287.39 billion in the same week.


Special Drawing Rights and the India-s reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) dropped by USD 17.4 million and USD 6.2 million respectively which Gold Reserves remained unchanged at USD 20.93 billion.



  1. India ended its 17thAsian Games journey at the eighth place on the medal tally with total 57 medals include 11 Gold medal, 10 silver medal and 36 bronze medal. India secured 6thplace on the medal tally last time in 2010. China ended the event with highest number of 342 medals followed by Hong Kong (234 medals) and Japan (200 medals) on the medal tally.


The Indian men-s kabaddi team won its seventh successive gold medal at the Asian Games yesterday after defeating Iran by 27-25 in the final match. Indian kabbaddi team has been winning Gold medal since the sport was introduced in the Asian Games in 1990. Indian women-s kabaddi team also won their second successive Gold medal after defeating Iran by 31-21 at the Asian Games yesterday, thus making a golden double for India.

  1. British-American researcher John O'Keefe and Norwegian couple, Edvard Moser and May-Britt Moser have been awarded with the Nobel Prize for medicine due to their work related to discovery of the brain's GPS system.


They discovered how the brain knows where we are and is able to navigate from one place to another.



  1. Serbia-s world number one tennis player Novak Djokovic won his fifth China Open Men-s singles title after defeating Czech-s Tomas Berdych in a straight set by 6-0, 6-2 in the final match.


Russian Maria Sharapova defeated Czech Petra Kvitova by 6-4 2-6 6-3 in the final of the China Open to win the China Open Women-s singles title.

  1. Madhya Pradesh has been ranked as the fastest growing state for the year 2013-14, replacing Bihar from the top place after several years. Madhya Pradesh economy grew by 11.08% in 2013-14 against the national GDP growth of 4.7%.Also the average growth stood at 10% in the last three years. Agriculture grew by more than 20% in Madhya Pradesh which pushed the overall growth higher.

  2. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was presented with the Global Diversity Award 2014 for his achievements in the field of movies and his involvement in philanthropic activities. Speaker of Britain's House of Commons, the Rt Hon John Bercow presented the award to him.

  3. Chennai Super Kings won Champions League T20 2014 title after defeating IPL Champion Kolkata Knight Riders by 8 wickets in the final match held in Bangalore. While batting first, Kolkata Knight Riders scored 180 runs in 20 overs, CSK achieved the target easily in 18.3 overs riding on a brilliant century (in just 59 balls) by Suresh Raina.


With this century, Suresh Raina became the only player to score a century in T20 Internationals, IPL and CLT20 tournaments. He was also given the Man of the series and Golden Bat while Sunil Narine received the Golden Wicket award.



  1. Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has invested in the Chennaiyin FC to own the football team in the high-profile Indian Super League after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. The event is scheduled to start from 12 October this year. He completed a deal with co-owner of Chennaiyin FC along with Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan.


Last month, Virat Kohli invested in ISL team FC Goa, Tendulkar invested in Kerala Blasters while Sourav Ganguly is a co-owner of Atletico de Kolkata.

Nasdaq-listed IT Services Company Cognizant has acquired digital marketing company Cadient Group for an estimated USD 30 million.Cadient serves a broad spectrum of life sciences companies and its clients are spread across pharmaceutical, biotechnology, consumer health and medical device industries.


This acquisition will help to increase its presence in Life science and pharma market. Currently Cognizant serves 28 of the top 30 global pharmaceutical companies and 16 of the top 20 health plans in the US.

Technology giant Hewlett-Packard has announced to split its entire business into two separate companies in order to improve efficiency.The companywill separateits better-performing computer and printer business from its corporate hardware and services operations. Post the spilt, Shareholders will be given a stake in both the companies.

  2. Famous Olympic swimmer and 18 Olympic gold medal winner Michael Phelps has been suspended from all competition for next six months by USA Swimming after his arrest due to drunk driving. After this, he will not take part in the 2015 World Championships to be held in Kazan, Russia.

  3. Uk-s Oliver Wilson won his first European golf title at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship held recently after defeating world number one Rory McIlroy by one stroke on 17 under par.


He played in the 2008 Ryder Cup but lost his European Tour card in 2012 and needed an invite to play at St Andrews.

President Pranab Mukherjee conferred Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration, Academics and Management for the year 2014, to Dr A Sivathanu Pillaitoday who is currently the Chief Controller of Research and Development in DRDO and Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BrahMos Aerospace.


He has also contributed in the development of various missiles including BrahMos. The award given by Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, carries five lakh rupees cash prize, a citation and a plaque.



  1. India has been ranked at 18th in the list of most desirable destinations to work among G20 countries, even as 70-80% of Indians are willing to work in an overseas location, as per a new report published by the consulting giant Boston Consulting Group.


The USA has been ranked on the top, followed by the UK, Canada, Germany and Switzerland, making them the five most desirable countries to work as per the same list.

Mahindra Two-Wheelers has announced that it would acquire 51% stake in Peugeot Motocycles for euro 28 million (about 217 crore) which is a part of the euro 54 billion French auto major PSA Group. As a part of the deal, Mahindra Two-Wheelerswill invest 15 million euros intoPeugeot Motocycles to finance projects implemented through strategic partnership.


Peugeot is well known company for its four and two-wheelers in Europe and is the world's oldest two-wheeler maker.

Indian economy is expected to grow by 6.4% in 2015-16 compared to 5.6% in 2014-15, as per the data published by the World Bank today.The bank said in its twice-a-year South Asia Economic Focus report that India-s economic activity was lifted by expectations from the new elected government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi which is the main reason for improved GDP growth in the next financial year.

  1. American Scientists Eric Betzig and William Moerner and German scientist Stefan Hell won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for their contribution to invent new methods which helps microscopes see finer details compared to earlier details visible.


As per academy, -Their ground-breaking work has brought optical microscopy into the nano-dimension.- Betzig works at the Howard Hughes Medfical Institute, Hell is director at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Goettingen, Germany while Moerner is a professor at Stanford University in California.



  1. Pratima Dharm, who recently retired as the first Hindu chaplain in the U.S. Army, has been appointed as the first Hindu chaplain at the Georgetown University. She will serve the religious needs of its Hindu students with increased numbers in recent years. Georgetown University was founded in 1789 and also the oldest Jesuit and Catholic university in the USA.

  2. Capital of Australia, Canberra has been chosen as the best place in the world to live,as per the report publishedby the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).OECD ranked 362 regions in its recent report.


Australia also secured no 1 rank among the countries followed by Norway among 34 countries. OECD used nine measures of wellbeing, including income, education, jobs, safety, health and environment for the ranking.

  1. India will contribute some of the vital components of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) -the world's largest telescope in the-making. The US, Japan, China and Canada are already chosen as the other partners for the project.The total cost of the telescope is estimated to be around USD 1.4 bliion in which India will contribute Rs 1,300 crore during 2014-23.


India will be setting up a facility to polish about 100 mirror segments and provide sophisticated components, like actuators and sensors required to construct the telescope. The telescope will provide sharp images from space and will cover a larger area as compared to the highly successful Hubble Space telescope.



  1. Thirty-three years after starting Infosys, its founders NR Narayana Murthy and S Gopalakrishnan bade farewell to the IT firm today. Seven co-founders, led by Mr. Murthy, set up the IT-based firm in 1981. Mr. Murthy was CEO of the company for 21 years before making his co-founders Nandan Nilekani and Kris Gopalakrishnan and S D Shibulal as CEOs of the company.


Murthy returned to the company in June last year to revive the company and left in June this year after appointing Vishal Sikka as the first non-co-founder CEO of the company.

  1. French author Patrick Modiano won Nobel Prize for Literature for the year 2014. The Swedish Academy has also called him "a Marcel Proust of our times".Modiano has written about Jewish identity in Europe after World War II and Germany's occupation of France.


He published his first book in 1968 and focuses mainly on historical fiction. Some of Modiano's roughly 30 works include "A Trace of Malice" and "Honeymoon". His latest work is the novel "Pour que tu ne te perdes pas dans le quartier".



  1. The Bank of England has kept the benchmark interest rate unchanged at record low of 0.5%. At the same time, it has alsodecided not to extend its quantitative easing programme after spending 375 billion pounds already.


Interest rate has been kept unchanged at 0.5% since March 2009 post one of the worst financial crisis in history.

  2. Former chairman of Prasar Bharati and veteran journalist Madhav Vittal Kamath passed away at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal today.He was 93. Kamath was the Washington correspondent of the Times of India from 1969 to 1978 and was also the editor of Illustrated Weekly of India.


Kamath was the honorary director of School of Communication, Manipal University since its inception in 1997. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2004 and he has written over 50 books.

Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarth and Pakistani activist for girl-s education Malala Yousufzai have been chosen for the Nobel peace prize for the year 2014, as announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee today.This is an important news for both from India and Pakistan have shared the biggest peace prize.


Kailash Satyarthi, who runs NGO Bachpan Bachao Aandolan has maintained the tradition of Mahatma Gandhi and headed various forms of peaceful protests with focus on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain.


Malala Yousufzai is also a symbol of peace after she was shot by Taliban in October 2012 in Pakistan for endorsing girl-s education. At her age of 17, she is the youngest recipient of the prize.



  1. Apple has been ranked as the world's most valuable brand with brand value of nearly USD 119 billion followed by Google at USD 107 billion, as per the Interbrand Best Global Brands annual report. Social networking giant Facebook has been the biggest riser in the chart at 29th spot with a brand value increasing by 86% to USD14.3 billion from USD 562 million.


Coca Cola secured the third place followed by IBM, Microsoft, GE, Samsung, Toyota, McDonald-s and Merc-Benz in the list of top 10 brands.

  2. Anoop Jain has been chosen for the 2014 Waislitz Global Citizen Award for his"exemplified values of a Global Citizen" through his work in founding Humanure Power (HP) in Bihar in 2011 that builds community sanitation facilities in rural India.


The award carries a USD 100,000 cash prize in recognition to the winner's work in making the "world a better place."



  1. Social networking giant Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg arrived in New Delhi yesterdayon his two day visit in India. Today he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and announced his support for sach bharat abhiyan.Facebook will alsohelp in the creation of the Clean India Mobile App and that it would be launched soon. They also talked about the Digital India initiative.


India is the second-largest market of Facebook outside the US in terms of number of users but one that generates little revenue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched an ambitious scheme named as -Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana- (MP Model Village Scheme) this week which aims around 800 MPS to develop physical and institutional infrastructure of three villages by 2019.Under this scheme an MP will be free to choose any village but it should not be his or her own village or that of his in-laws. As per the scheme, nearly 2500 villages will be developed by 2019 and will play an important role to develop rural India.


Narendra Modi said he will choose a village in Varanasi, his Parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh. The Prime Minister also said that if one village is developed in a block, it is also likely to have a "viral" effect and development would permeate other villages also.



  1. Dr Venkatesh Panchapagesan , Associate Professor, Finance & Control Area, and Coordinator of the -Century Real Estate Research Initiative of IIM Bangalore, has been appointed member of the advisory committee of the World Economic Forum on real estate. As a part of his appointment, He will provide insights on the initiative 'Emerging Horizons in Real Estate and will also help to prepare initial report for the World Economic Forum meeting at Davos in January.


The report will aim to provide an understanding on how real estate bubbles develop, identify suitable key indicators to detect bubbles and discuss potential action. The initiative has emerged from discussions held by Infrastructure & Urban Development Governors (Chairpersons and CEOs of leading Infrastructure and Urban Development Companies, including Real Estate) at Davos in January 2014.



  1. India-s forex reserves dropped by USD 2.754 billion in the week ended 3rdOctober to USD 311.427 billion, as per weekly report published by the RBI. The drop was mainly due to drop in foreign currency assets which dropped by USD 1.803 billion to USD 285.588 billion in the same week.


Special Drawing Rights and the India-s reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) dropped by USD 3.7 million and USD 15.1 million respectively. Gold Reserves were also decreased by USD 919.7 million to USD 20.013 billion.


IIP growth dropped to 5-month low of 0.4% in August; Confirms sluggish industrial growth


India-s Index of Industrial Production, the most important parameter to judge performance of industrial sector, growth dropped to 5-month low of 0.4% in August compared to 0.5% in July due to lower growth in consumer goods sectors. IIP growth also stood at 0.4% in August last year.


Manufacturing sector output, which constitutes over 75% of the index, was contracted 1.4%, consumer goods output contracted by 6.9% and consumer durables output contracted by 15% in August which dragged the overall IIP growth number.


During the April-August period of the current fiscal year 2014-15, the IIP recorded a growth of 2.8% compared to flat growth in the same period last year. This dismal IIP data confirms sluggish growth in India-s manufacturing sector. RBI needs to cut rates aggressively to booth industrial as well as economic growth.

French economist Jean Tirole has been awarded with the 2014 Nobel Prize in economics for his analysis on market power and regulation.Tirole's work has helped regulators and competition authorities to get a whole new set of tools to regulate industries. In his research paper, he has clarified how to understand and regulate industries with a few powerful firms.

  2. China-s exports jumped by 15.3% in September compared to same month last year to USD 213.7 billion, which is also the fastest growth in last 19 months. Imports also jumped by 7% in the same month to USD 182.7 billion.


Trade surplus in September jumped more than 100% in September compared to same month last year to USD 31 billion, compared with USD 49.8 billion seen in previous month of August. This growth increases optimism about global economic recovery.



  1. Britain's Lewis Hamilton won the Russian Grand Prix held yesterday which is also his ninth win of the year.This was also his fourth consecutive win which also helps him to extend his championship lead. Hamilton's team-mate Nico Rosberg secured 2ndplace in the race.


With this win, Hamilton won the most number of formula 1 race by a Briton at 31, thus breaking Nigel Mansell's record.

Very severe cyclone Hudhud devastated Andhra Pradesh and Orissa after making landfall on Sunday and now weakened into a deep depression (just below cyclone status) located over south Chhattisgarh. Yesterday it made a landfall with wind speed nearly 200 Kms/hr and created huge destruction in the affect area.


Earlier the Navy has been appointed as the lead agency among the armed force to carry out relief and rescue operations which have been code-named 'Op Lehar'. Rescue and relief operation has been intensified today to provide necessary support to all the affected people.



  1. The Congress party has removed Shashi Tharoor from the post of party spokesperson after his praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.The Congress disciplinary committee has recommended the same as the Kerala Unit of the party had demanded action against him for raising Narendra Modi.


Earlier, he had praised NDA government's Swachh Bharat campaign and responded positively to Mr. Modi's invitation to join it.



  1. Indian arm of Online e-commerce giant Amazon and India-s Future Group have signed a deal to jointly sell Future group-s goods on internet.As per the deal, Future group's portfolio of over 40 brands will be sold exclusively on Amazon.in website.


The partnership will mainly focus on Future Group's fashion brands now and will subsequently cover all other categories.



  1. Capital Market regulator SEBI has barred realty major DLF, as also six top executives including Chairman K.P Singh, from securities markets for three years after it found them guilty of -active and deliberate suppression- of material information at the time of its public offer in 2007.


As per SEBI, DLF executives have deliberately suppressed important material information and mislead the investors in the securities market during its IPO launch in 2007. The company and its top executives are found to have violated various regulations including SEBI-s Disclosure and Investor Protection (DIP) Guidelines and the PFUTP (Prevention of Fraudulent and Unfair Trade Practices) norms.



  1. Asia Index Pvt Ltd (AIPL), a joint venture between S&P Dow Jones Indices and Bombay Stock Exchange, has announced the launch of two more indices for investors in Indian market named as the S&P BSE Sensex Future Index and S&P BSE CPSE Index.


The S&P BSE Sensex Futures Index will help investors and traders to invest in one-month futures contract on S&P BSE Sensex traded on the BSE. The S&P BSE CPSE Index will track the Central Public Sector Enterprises for the investors and traders. This CPSE list will not include the public sector banks.

Indian Super League (ISL) - India-s star studded football league just like IPL was inaugurated as the Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata on Sunday with a glittering ceremony.Nita Ambani, founding Chairperson of Football Sports Development (ISL), declared the league open. The ceremony was attended by stars like Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan, and West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee etc.


Atletico De Kolkata won the inaugural game, after defeating Mumbai FC by 3-0.


India-s retail inflation eases to 6.46% in September from 7.8% in August


India-s Retail inflation, measured by Consumer Price Index, eased marginally to 6.46% in September compared to 7.8% in August. Consumer food price inflation, also dropped to 7.67% in September from 9.35% in previous month of August and 11.75% in September 2013.


The steep decrease in food inflation for August was mainly due to decrease in vegetable prices, which eased to 8.59% in the same month compared to 15.15% in the previous month. Inflation in fruit items slowed to 22.4% in September from 24.27% in August


 The urban inflation eased to 6.34% in September compared to 7.04% in August while in rural areas retail inflation eased to 6.68% in September compared to 8.25% in August. This drop in retail inflation and food inflation number will give more room to RBI to cut rates to boost growth.

He has earlier served as Yemen-s oil minister before being named as Yemen-s envoy to the United Nations. UN Security Council has also welcomed the move as this step is expected to ease tension in the country.

UK inflation,measured by the Consumer Prices Index, dropped to a five-year low of 1.2% in September compared to 1.5% in the previous month of 1.5%.The rate is the lowest rate since inflation of 1.1% in September 2009. This inflation is much lower compared to 2% target set by the Bank of England.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Cyclone Hudhud affected areas in in Visakhapatnam and other districts today and announced immediate assistance of Rs 1,000 crore to the Andhra Pradesh Government for relief work.He also sanctioned Rs. 2 lakh ex-gratia to the kin of the deceased and Rs.50,000 for severely injured persons from Prime Minister-s Relief Fund. He also reviewed the relief operations along with the Chief Minister and Union Ministers.


He arrived in Visakhapatnam by a special flight and conducted an aerial survey of some of the cyclone-hit areas in the district today. He was received at the airport by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Union Ministers M Venkaiah Naidu and Ashok Gajapati Raju, and State Governor Narasimhan.



  1. India has been ranked at 55thposition out of 76 countries as per the2014 Global Hunger Index (GHI) released by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). The 2014 GHI was calculated for 120 developing countries and countries in transition, 55 of which have a serious or worse hunger situation.


This is a marginal progress compared to 63rd position in the global hunger index (GHI) last year. The 55th position in 2014 is better than Pakistan (ranked at 57) and Bangladesh (ranked at 57), but lower than other neighboring countries Nepal (44) and Sri Lanka (39).



  1. Indian shuttler Ajay Jayaram won the USD 50,000 Dutch Open Grand Prix badminton tournament held in Netherlands in October. He defeated Indonesia-s Ihsan Maulana Mustofa 10-11, 11-6, 11-7, 1-11, 11-9 in the final match to win the title.


This was maiden Grand Prix title for him and with this win, he has also became the first Indian to win badminton Grand Prix tournament under the new 11x5 scoring system.

Olympic bronze medalist MC Mary Kom has been chosen as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of India-s Incheon Asian Games campaign at a felicitation ceremony of the medal winners by contingent sponsors, Samsung India. She was chosen as the Most Valuable Player based on a poll conducted by Samsung India.


She is also the first Indian woman boxer to win a gold medal in Asian Games.

India-s overall inflation drops to 5-year low of 2.38% in September; RBI may cut rates now to boost growth


India-s overall inflation, measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), dropped to 5-year low of 2.38% in September compared to 3.74% in August. This is much lower inflation number compared to expectations. Overall inflation stood at 7.05% in September last year.


The Food Price Index for September dropped steeply to 3.52% in September compared to 5.15% in August. The fuel and power inflation also dropped to 1.33% in September from 4.54% in August and the primary articles inflation dropped to 2.18% in the same month from 3.89% in August. Also the Consumer inflation dropped to 6.46% in September from 7.8% in August due to the steep decline in vegetables prices.


With this drop in overall inflation and consumer inflation, RBI may cut interest rates now in order to boost both economic and industrial growth.

An Indian police inspector, Shakti Devi of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, has been awarded with the prestigious international female peacekeeper award by the UN's police division for her "exceptional achievements" in her duty with the UN mission in Afghanistan. She was awarded for her efforts towards helping victims of sexual and gender-based violence.


She is currently deployed in the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and has been awarded the International Female Police Peacekeeper Award 2014. The award was delivered during the International Association of Women Police (IAWP) conference held earlier this month in Winnipeg, Canada.



  1. Reserve Bank governor Raghuram Rajan has been awarded with the Best Central Bank Governor award for 2014 by Euromoney magazine.As per Euromoney, Raghuram Rajan's tough monetary measures helped the deficit-ridden Indian economy in the recent emerging market crisis.


Rajan received Euromoney's Central Bank Governor of the Year Award 2014 in Washington on 10th October, the RBI said in a release. Earlier the American Finance Association awarded Rajan the inaugural Fischer Black Prize for the best finance researcher under the age of 40 in January 2003.



  1. Low-cost Indian airline and the only profict making company on Indian sky, IndiGo has signed a memorandum of understanding for 250 Airbus New Engine Option (NEO) family of aircraft. The agreement was signed at the Airbus Headquarters in Toulouse.


Airbus charges a premium for each NEO it delivers as it promises 15% fuel burn savings among other benefits such as noise reduction and lower maintenance and operating costs. This agreement is also the Airbus- single largest order by the number of aircraft also may be worth of more than USD 25 billion.

  1. Australian author Richard Flanagan won the 50000 pounds Man Booker Prize for his wartime novelThe Narrow Road to the Deep North.Flanagan's book is the story of his father as a prisoner during war in a Japanese prison and was called a literary masterpiece by the jury.


He was chosen as the winner at London-s Guildhall and was presented the prize by The Duchess of Cornwall. With this he became the third Australian to win the prize after Thomas Keneally won in 1982 and Peter Carey won in 1988 and 2001.


Indian author Neel Mukherjee was among the six short listed authors for his latest novel The Lives of Others. Indian writer Jhumpa Lahiri's The Lowland lost out to Eleanor Catton in 2013 as well.

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a series of labour reforms today Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Shramev Jayate programme to support already launched -Make In India- campaign.


The labour reforms include Labour Inspection Scheme to end inspector raj in the country as computerized list of inspections will be generated randomly for labour inspectors. Also it will be mandatory for them to upload inspection reports within 72 hours. The Prime Minister said that the process will do away the cases of harassment and check arbitrariness in conducting inspections. All these steps are taken to support his government's approach of minimum government and maximum governance.



  1. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has successfully launched third navigation satellite Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) 1C from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota today. Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C26 injected IRNSS 1C into the designated orbit and this was the 27th consecutive successful flight of PSLV.


IRNSS 1C is the third member of the seven satellite constellation of the IRNSS. The first two satellites in the series were IRNSS 1A and IRNSS 1B.



  1. The Central Government has appointed US-based economist Arvind Subramanian as India's next Chief Economic Advisor. Subramanian said in a statement today that he would focus on growth, investment and creating opportunities for all segments of Indian society.


With this appointment, he became the third internationally renowned economist to be appointed as the chief economic advisor of India recently. Kaushik Basu (World Bank Chief Economist) and Raghuram Rajan (current RBI Governor and former IMF chief economist) were the other two internationally renowned economists who recently served as CEA.



  1. The Government has transferred Finance Secretary and Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram to the Tourism Ministry and he will be replaced Chief Secretary of Rajasthan, Rajiv Mehrishi. Mehrishi will join as Economic Affairs Secretary from 1stNovember 2014.


Expenditure Secretary Ratan P Watal is likely to be the new Finance Secretary as he is the senior most among all the five secretaries in the Finance Ministry. Anil Swaroop has been appointed as new Coal Secretary and Alok Rawat has been moved to the Personnel Ministry from the Water Resources and Ganga Rejuvenation Ministry.



  1. Famous Telugu writer and former radio artiste, Turaga Janaki Rani passed away at a private hospital in Hyderabad after prolonged illness. She was 80.


Janaki Rani had retired as assistant station director of AIR and was popularly known as -Radio Akkayya.- She used to conduct Balanandam, one of the popular programmes and was also awarded with the national best broadcaster award for two years in 1991 and 1992.

  1. Five countries,Venezuela, Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand and Spain have been elected as non-permanent members of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) this week. They were elected after member states voted in support of these five nations. All these five new members received over two-thirds of the votes cast in a secret ballot.


This appointment is effective from 1st January 2014 and they will join join five other non-permanent members, namely Chad, Chile, Jordan, Lithuania and Nigeria.



  1. Veteran actress Maggie Smith was made a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour by Queen Elizabeth at a special ceremony at Windsor Castle in Berkshire in recognition of her services to drama for more than six decades this week. This is one Britian-s highest honours.


With this, the actress joins the elite group of just 65 other Companions of Honour, including Professor Stephen Hawking, Judi Dench and Ian McKellen.



  1. Indian-Singaporean poet and writer KTM Iqbal was awarded with the 2014 Cultural Medallion award which is the highest cultural award of Singapore. He will be awarded by the Tony Tan, the President of Singapore. He had written nearly 200 children's songs for Radio Singapore in the 1970s and 1980s and seven collections of poetry.


He will get 80000 Singapore dollar grants along with the award.This award will be the highest recognition for the 74-year-old Tamil poet.

  1. The Supreme Court has granted bail to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK leader J Jayalalitha yesterday. She was released from Bangalore central jail today after 21 days of imprisonment.Judge Michael D-Cunha issued the release order after a bond for two crore rupees and surety of assets by two persons was furnished in the court.


Earlier Jayalalitha was convicted by a special court in an 18-year old DA case along with her 3 associates and given imprisonment of 4 years and fiend Rs 100 core last month.



  1. India's indigenously developed nuclear capable cruise missile Nirbhay was successfully test-fired from Chandipur in Odisha yesterday. This was the second test of the sub-sonic long range cruise missile.


The nuclear capable cruise missile was indigenously developed by DRDO and can strike targets more than 700 kms away.



  1. India-born scientist Sanjaya Rajaram has been awarded with the prestigious World Food Prize 2014 for his contribution in the field of agricultural research. His research helped to increase world wheat production based on the successes of the Green Revolution.


By crossing winter and spring wheat varieties, he created wheat varieties that are disease- and stress-resistant and adaptable to diverse geographical regions and climates.Borlaug, known as the father of the Green Revolution called him as "the greatest present-day wheat scientist in the world" in 2007.



  1. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) will start direct lending to food processing industries in mega food parks and designated food parks by end of October this year. The NABARD has also set up a fund with a corpus of Rs 2,000 crore for the same purpose.


This is in line with the Government-s commitment to set up a fund and gave the responsibility to NABARD to promote food processing sector through mega food parks. NABARD has been allocated Rs 2,000 crore fund, which will be utilized to lend to state government entities and private sector.

Karur Vysya Bank has been awarded with the Best Bank Award for Business Intelligence Initiatives among small banks for 2013-14.Managing Director and Chief Executive of Karur Vysya bank, K Venkataraman, received the award from the Governor of Reserve Bank of India, Raghuram G Rajan. IDRBT has chosen KVB for this award for the sixth year in a row.

  2. Indian airlines collectively carried58.22 lakh passengers o during September this year, as per the latest passenger traffic data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This is nearly 28% higher compared to 45.55 lakh passengers flown during the same period last year.


Indigo secured the No 1 rank among all the Indian airlines as it carried 19.07 lakh passengers during the month followed by SpiceJet at No 2 rank (10.82 lakh). Jet Airways was ranked at 3 while Air India stood at 4th position.



  1. India-s forex reserves jumped by USD 1.309 billion in the week ended 10thOctober to USD 312.736 billion, as per weekly report published by the RBI. The increase was mainly due to increase in foreign currency assets which dropped by USD 1.297 billion to USD 286.885 billion in the same week.


Special Drawing Rights and the India-s reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were also increased by USD 9.3 million and USD 3.3 million respectively while Gold Reserves remained unchanged at USD 20.013 billion.



  1. Italian superbike brand Benelli, now owned by Chinese motor group Qianjiang, has signed a partnership agreement on technical partnership with Pune-based DSK Motowheels to enter into India-s two-wheeler market.


Post this partnership, it will launch five superbikes in the 300-1130 cc range. DSK already has partnership with South Korea-s Hyosung to manufacture and market its superbikes in India.

Assembly election result of Maharashtra and Haryana was declared yesterday.The BJP secured its biggest ever victory in Maharashtra Assembly elections after winning 122 seats out of total 288 seats. The Shiv Sena has won 63 seats, the Congress 42 and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won just 41 seats. BJP is all set to form new Government with support from either Shiv Sena or NCP.


While in Haryana, BJP secured absolute majority after in 47 seats out of total 90 seats. BJP will form its first government in the state. In this elections, Haryana also recorded its highest ever turnout of 76.54%.



  1. Madhya PradeshChief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has declared next year 2015 as the Tourism Year in the State and also said that Madhya Pradesh-s tourism potential would be displayed before the world in the next year.


The Chief Minister also said that Madhya Pradesh would be developed as pioneer State in tourism sector and added State had immense potential for tourism.

  1. China's economic growth dropped to 7.3% in the third quarter (July-September) of the current year compared to same period last year. This is the slowest economic growth for China since the financial crisis in 2009 when economic growth dropped to just 6.6%.


Economic growth in the same quarter was marginally lower compared to 7.5% growth witnessed in the previous quarter. On quarterly basis, economic growth dropped to 1.9%.

He was travelling to Paris in his Dassault Falcon business jet while the accident took place.

Chief Coach of Indian hockey team, Terry Walsh has resigned from his post today because of a "pay dispute" with the Sports Authority of India.His resignation came at a very bad time and just couple of weeks after the Men-s hockey team winning a Gold medal in the recently concluded Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.


His contract was valid till the 2016 Rio Olympics. He said that he was finding it difficult to adjust to the decision making style of the sporting bureaucracy in the country. His contract was to run till the 2016 Rio Olympics.

  1. India was re-elected for the second consecutive term tothe UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) from 2015 to 17.India has received the highest number of votes in the Asia-Pacific Group which clearly proves India-s growing influence in the region and in the global body.


India is currently a member of the 47-nation UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and its first term is due to end on December 31, 2014. Indian has sought for re-election which was held in the UN General Assembly today.


Apart from India, the other 14 member states elected to the Human Rights Council for a three-year term of office from 2015 to 2017 are Albania, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Botswana, the Congo, El Salvador, Ghana, Indonesia, Latvia, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Paraguay, Portugal and Qatar.


2.The Central Government has set up a committee to frame bankruptcy law to enable entrepreneurs to close down unviable businesses. The committee will be headed by former Law Secretary T K Vishwanathan and it will study the corporate bankruptcy legal framework in India and submit a report by February 2015.


This decision was taken as per the announcement made by the Finance Minister during his 2014-15 budget speech where he proposed to develop an entrepreneur friendly legal bankruptcy framework for SMEs to enable easy exit.



  1. One day after his sudden announcement to quit as Chief Coach of Indian Hockey team, Terry Walsh has decided to continue in his postafter a meeting with top sports officials today. He officials have assured him that all of his concerns will be taken care of in a fresh contract.

World Boxing body, AIBA has provisionally suspended India's woman boxer Laishram Sarita Devi for refusing to accept the bronze medal at the recently concluded Asian Games podium ceremony.She had refused to wear the medal and broke down on the podium after the controversial decision of the judges.


The AIBA also provisionally suspended Sarita's coaches (Messrs Gurbakhsh Singh Sandhu, Blas Iglesias Fernandez and Sagar Mal Dhayal) as well as Indian chef-de-mission in the Incheon Asiad, Adille J Sumariwalla and will not allow any of them to participate at all levels of competitions, events and meetings until further notice.   1. China and other Asian countries have formally launchedAsian infrastructure bank this week as a new rival of Western economies dominated World Bank and IMF. The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) was launched in Beijing at a ceremony attended by financial leaders and delegates from 21 countries including China, India, Thailand and Malaysia.


This USD 50 billion Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) will provide necessary funding to Asian emerging economies and directly seen as a challenge to the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. China will have the largest shareholding of 50% in the bank.

-His prototype — the PolluCell — converts carbon dioxide into electricity, ingeniously helping to reduce our carbon footprint, while offering power for household uses and developing nations,-- Discovery Education and 3M said in a statement.


He is a ninth grader student from Pittsburg and he competed alongside nine other for the 2014 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. The award includes USD 25,000 and a student adventure trip to Costa Rica.



  1. UK economic growth dropped to 0.7% in the third quarter (July-September), as per the data published by the Office for National Statistics. This is slightly lower than 0.9% growth witnessed in the previous quarter.


This lower GDP growth will raise concern about economic recovery in UK and entire Euro zone. UK economic growth may be affected further by slowdown in Euro zone.

  1. Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampathhas announced poll schedulefor assembly elections in Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir today. Poll will be conducted in 5 phases in 81 member Jharkhand assembly and 87 member Jammu and Kashmir. The poll dates are 25th November and 2nd, 9th, 14th and 20th of December. Counting will take place on 23rd December.


As per election commission, the model code of conduct has come into force with immediate effect. Also by-elections for three assembly seats in Delhi will also be held in the first phase on 25th November and counting will be held on 23rd December.



  1. Kaushal Srivastava has been chosen as the new Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Custom (CBEC), the apex policy making body of indirect taxes. He is a 1978 batch Indian Revenue Service officer and the senior-most in the board.


He will replace JM Shanti Sundharam, who will retire on 31st October. Srivastava will remain at the top post till he attains retirement age of 60 in July 2016.



  1. India-s first hospital to treat abnormalities and diseases in fish will be set up in Kolkata by mid-2015. Senior scientist T J Abraham, who is spearheading the project, told that the work has already started on the project. The institute will not only help fish farmers increase yield by reducing the number of fish deaths, but will also ensure that people will consume healthy fish.

  2. India-s forex reserves increased by USD 945.6 million in the week ended 17thOctober to USD 313.682 billion, as per weekly report published by the RBI. The increase was mainly due to increase in foreign currency assets which increased by USD 914.1 million to USD 287.799 billion in the same week.


Special Drawing Rights and the India-s reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were also increased by USD 23.1 million and USD 8.4 million respectively while Gold Reserves remained unchanged at USD 20.013 billion.



  1. Famous Tamil Actor S.S. Rajendran passed away at a private hospital in Chennai on Friday. He was 85. He made his debut in Parasakthi and also acted in films like Ratha Kanner, Rangoon Radhaand Sivagangai Seemai.


He was also actively involved in politics for more than 2 decades. Under the establishment of SSR Pankajam, Rajendran-s wife Pankajam and he had built a cinema theatre, film studio and recording theatre.



  1. Famous freedom fighter Jagdish Sharan Pande who had worked for Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's Azad Hind Fauj passed away in Almora on Thursday. He was 95.

  2. India-scueistPankaj Advani outplayed former champion Peter Gilchrist in the 150 up points format World Billiards Championship final to win his 11th world title on Friday. He defeated Singapore cueist Gilchrist 6-2 in a high quality finals of the shorter format of billiards.


With this win, Advani now is the holder of three different world titles in 2014 - the IBSF World 6-Red Snooker title, the World Team Billiards title and now the World Billiards Championship (point format), creating a record for himself.

  1. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has been re-elected as the President of BRICS nations in a close competition. With 99% of the vote counted, Rousseff was managed to secure majority 51.5% of the votes compared to her opponent Aecio Neves who received 48.5% votes.


Her party, Workers' Party has held the Presidency since 2003 and it will be again extended for another 5 years.



  1. Google CEO Larry Page has appointed Indian-born Sundar Pichai as head of all Google products business as part of a big management re-structure process. The story comes from unnamed sources and Google has yet to issue an official press release regarding the same.


Sundar Pichai will now be head of Google Plus, search, maps, research, commerce and ad products as well as infrastructure. YouTube will remain under Susan Wojcicki, CEO of the YouTube.

Serena Williams won her fifth WTA Finals title after defeating Simona Halep of Romania by 6-3, 6-0 in Singapore Open today.With this win, she became the first player to win the season finale three times in a row since Monica Seles achieved the same feat in 1992. Haryana's first chief minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party, Manohar Lal Khattar took oath on Sunday in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Haryana governor Kaptan Singh Solanki administered the oath of office. Six cabinet ministers and three ministers of state (independent charge), were also sworn in along with him.


BJP won 47 seats out of total 90 assembly seats to create a new history in Haryana. With this BJP secured absolute majority and formed first government in the state.



  1. The former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh has been designated to chair a global research platform panel on sustainable development named as "Future Earth Engagement Committee". This committee was instituted by an alliance of international organisations including the UNEP, the UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) with focus in sustainable development.


The Committee is a strategic advisory group of thought-leaders from different areas like business, and civil society etc. which will work to address the challenges of global environmental change.



  1. Indian movie director Ashwika Kapur became the first Indian woman to win prestigious Wildscreen Panda Award. She won the coveted wildlife photography award in best newcomer category for her film, "Sirocco - how a dud became a stud".The documentary is about a New Zealand parrot who is the official spokesbird for conservation.


Sirocco beat other documentary movies including US film "Pride" and the UK film "We Are Rhino" to win the award. This award, also known as Green Oscar of the natural history and wildlife film industry, was announced at the annual Wildscreen Film Festival held at Bristol, UK.

The World Bank has Projected India's GDP growth at 5.6% in the current financial year 2014-15 and also said GDP growth will accelerate further to 6.4% in 2015-16 and 7% in 2016-17.The World Bank said in its report, "India's long run growth potential remains high due to favourable demographics, relatively high savings and policies and efforts to improve skills and education, facilitate domestic market integration and incentivise manufacturing activities."

  2. Indian tennis player Sania Mirza and her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black won the WTA Women's double title after defeating Su-Wei Hseih of Chinese Taipei and Shuai Peng of China by 6-1, 6-0 in the final match in Singapore.With this win, they have ended this year with a remarkably high position.

  3. Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri won his second title of the year, the Venetian Macau Open. This is also hisfifth career win on the Asian Tour.His sensational one-stroke helped him to defeat Scott Hend of Australia and Thai Prom Meesawat by one stroke to win the title.

The Supreme Court ordered Centre today to disclose all the names of black money holders abroad to the apex court by Wednesday in a sealed envelope and slammed it for reluctance on the issue.The apex court said that it cannot modify its order and slammed the central government for seeking modification of its earlier order.


Attorney General said the government has received 500 names of account holders from different countries like Germany.



  1. Devendra Fadnavis has been elected the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) LegislatureParty in Maharashtra today. With this, he will be BJP Party-s first Chief Minister of the state. The resolution proposing Fadnavis as the leader of the Legislature Party was unanimously approved by the newly elected MLAs in the presence of union home minister Rajnath Singh and BJP general secretary in-charge of Maharashtra J.P. Nadda.

  2. The Central Government has formed a committee headed by former CVC Pratyush Sinha to assess compensation to be paid for taking over running or ready to produce mines.Earlier Supreme Court has cancelled allocation of 204 coal blocks to various companies allocated between 1993 and 2009. 37 are running coal mines and another five are ready to produce by April.


The panel, which will also compromise officials of ministries of coal, power, finance and law, will submit its recommendations by November 10.



  1. India has been ranked at 114thplace in the list of 142 countries based on gender-based disparities, as per the World Economic Forum's 2014 gender gap index published today. India slipped 13 places this year compared to 101th spot last year.


India is also part of the 20 worst-performing countries on the labour force participation, estimated earned income, literacy rate and sex ratio at birth indicators while India has been ranked among the top 20 best-performing countries on the political empowerment subindex. Based on economic participation and opportunity, India was ranked 134th; on educational attainment, India was ranked at 126th with female to male ratio in literacy rate at 0.68 and based on health and survival, ranked at 141st spot.


India performed better than countries like UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Jordan. Pakistan has been ranked as the second lowest country at 141st position. Iceland has been ranked at No 1 spot on World Economic Forum index followed by Finland (2), Norway (3), Sweden (4) and Denmark (5).

Private sector lender ING Vysya Bank's Board has announced Deputy CEO Uday Sareen as new Managing Director and CEO of the bank.He will succeed current Managing Director and CEO Shailendra Bhandari, who resigned today after spending 5 years with the bank. Bhandari will continue in office till January 31, 2015.

  2. Japanese Telecom major, theSoftbank group has invested USD 627 million in Indian Online marketplace Snapdeal, which raises confidence in future growth potential of Indian E-commerce sector. With this investment, the SoftBank Group aims to increase its presence in India and leverage synergies with its network of Internet companies around the world. With this, SoftBank has become the largest shareholder of the E-Commerce company.

  2. Zambian President Michael Sata, also known as 'King Cobra' because of his venomous tongue, passed away in London where he had been receiving medical treatment.He was 77.He became president of Zambiain 2011.

  1. India has been ranked at 142nd position in the list of 189 countries in the latest World Bank's "Ease of Doing Business" report published today.India-s rank dropped by two places from the ranking published last year. India secured 53.97 points this year compared to 52.78 points last year which confirms significant improvement in last one year.


Singapore secured No 1 position with 88.27 points in terms of ease of doing business followed by New Zealand, Hong Kong, Denmark and South Korea.  The USA and UK has been ranked at No 7th and 8th position respectively while China was ranked at 90th position in the same list.



  1. India has been ranked at 7thplace for minority investor protection, as per asub-ranking released by the World Bank as part of its annual Ease of Doing Business report today. This ranking is much better than some developed countries like United States, Japan, France and Germany.


The report added that India improved minority investor protections by requiring greater disclosure of conflicts of interest by board members, increasing the remedies available in case of prejudicial related party transactions and introducing additional safeguards for shareholders of privately held companies.



  1. The Central Government has submitted a list of names of 627 Indian account holders in HSBC Bank, Geneva, in black money case to the Supreme Court.The list was handed over to SIT team probing the black money case. The apex court has also asked the Special Investigation Team to go through the list and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.


A Bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu did not open the sealed envelope and said that it would be opened only by the Chairman and the Vice-Chairman of the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT). It has asked SIT to submit the status report of its probe by November-end.



  1. Senior journalist A Surya Prakash has been appointed Chairman of the Prasar Bharati Board for next 3 years. He will succeed another veteran journalist Mrinal Pande who completed his tenure on 30thApril this year.The post has been lying vacant for the last six months.


The appointment was made on the recommendation of a three-member committee headed by Vice President M Hamid Ansari and comprising Press Council of India Chairman Markandey Katju and I&B Secretary Bimal Julka.

Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar has been elected as the vice-president of Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) in Macau yesterday.Representatives from Malaysian broadcaster RTM and Japan's NHK were also chosen as vice-presidents while the representative from South Korean broadcaster KBS was chosen president.


ABU is a non-profit, non-government professional association of broadcasters. ABU has 264 members in 61 countries and it reaches to a potential audience of 3.5 billion people. India is a founder member since 1964 and All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan have been associated with it.



  1. Indian PSU firm Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) overtook Reliance Industries to become the highest ranked Indian energy firm as per the Platts Global 250 Rankings for this year. ONGC now ranked at 22ndposition globally compared to 23rdposition last year. RIL, India-s largest private firm, secured 22nd rank while Indian Oil Corp and Coal India secured 43rd and 47th rank respectively.


The list is led by Oil giants Exxon Mobil Corp, Chevron and Royal Dutch Shell.



  1. Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar and former Australian captain Steve Waugh were inducted as one of the latest honorees in the Bradman Foundation at a gala dinner held at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground.


Tendulkar, who met Bradman on his 90th birthday at his Adelaide home, was later listed in an all-time XI prepared by the batting genius himself.

  1. Pakistan Schoolgirl and the youngest Nobel Peace prize winnerMalala Yousafzai won the 2014 World-s Children Prize yesterday after a global voting involving millions of children. She received the prize at a ceremony in Mariestad near Stockholm.


She was nominated for the 2014 World's Children-s Prize for her courageous and dangerous fight for girls' right to education. She received USD 50000 as cash reward.


At the same time, Indira Ranamagar and John Wood jointly won the 2014 World's Children's honorary awards with a cash rewards of USD 25000.



  1. The US economy grew at an annual rate of 3.5% in the third quarter (July-September) of the current year which was much better than earlier expectation of 3%. This growth rate follows 4.6% growth rate witnessed in the previous quarter.


Economic growth jumped due to strong export growth and higher government spending. Strong economic growth also led to six year low unemployment rate as well.



  1. US Central Bank, the Federal Reserve ended its monthly bond purchase program, known as Quantitative Easing after started reducing bond purchase value by USD 10 billion same time last year.   1. The Finance Ministry has issued new austerity measures to match up with the lower revenue realization till date. The measures include 10% cut in non-Plan expenditure and ban on creation of new posts.


The government has also barred the Government officials to travel in first class in order to cut cost. It also advised that in all cases of air travel, the lowest available air fare tickets have to be utilized.



  1. India has been ranked at 55thplace out of total 76 countries in terms of Global Hunger Index (GHI). As per the report, One-third of India-s women and children under the age of five are underweight and face micronutrient deficiencies.Though India-s position has improved significantly over the last couple of years due to steady economic growth and some special programs by the Government.

  2. The Finance & Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram has been transferred again to join Ministry of Minority Affairs. The appointment committee has cancelled its earlier order to transfer him to Tourism Ministry from the Finance Ministry.


The Government has already announced Rajiv Mehrishi as the new Economic Affairs Secretary. Since, Mehrishi is senior most among five secretaries (Economic Affairs, Revenue, Expenditure, Financial Services and Disinvestment) in the Finance Ministry, he is expected to become next Finance Secretary too.

He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor C Vidyasagar Rao in a grand function at Wankhede Stadium. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, Chief Ministers of BJP—ruled states have attended the ceremony.


Former ally Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has also attended the ceremony at the last moment after a last minute call by party President Amit Shah. Cabinet Ministers who were sworn in are Eknath Khadse, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Vinod Tawde, Pankaja Munde, all members of the BJP's state Core Committee, Prakash Mehta, Chandrakant Patil and Vishnu Savara. The Ministers of State are Dilip Kamble and Vidya Thakur.

Growth of India's eight core sectors slowed down to 1.9% in September compared to same period last year due to drop in production of crude oil, natural gas, petroleum refinery products and fertilisers sectors. Other sectors coal, steel, cement and electricity posted a growth in the same month.


During April-September period of the current financial year, cumulative core sector growth stood at 4%. The eight core industries have approximately 38% weight in the overall Index of Industrial Production (IIP).



  1. Indian famous badminton player Saina Nehwal jumped by a place to fifth rank in the latest Badminton World Federation women's singles rankings published in Delhi yesterday. She improved her ranking based on her back-to-back quarter-final appearances at Denmark and French Open tournaments this month.


Other player P V Sindhu maintained No 10 rank in the list. Parupalli Kashyap jumped by 4 places to 17th spot in the latest ranking after he made in the semi-finals of Denmark Open and he lost in the quarterfinals of French Open.



  1. Former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson, wanted in India in connection with the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, passed in the U.S. state of Florida aged 92.


The tragedy claimed more than 3,000 lives and considered to be one of the world's most lethal industrial accidents. The Indian government made multiple requests to extradite him, and officially labelled him a fugitive. A judge also called him an "absconder".
