  1. Inflation in the eurozone increased marginally to 0.4% in October compared to 0.3% inflation in September. This will reduce fear about deflation in the region.


Also the Eurozone unemployment rate remained unchanged at 11.5% in September compared to previous month of August. The ECB has already reduced its benchmark interest rate to 0.05% to boost growth across the region.

  1. Japan's central bank has announced an aggressive asset buying programme of 80 trillion yen or USD 726 billion) from its previous programmed of 60-70 trillion yen. This move is expected to help Japan to come out of deflation. All the stock market indexes jumped to record-high post this announcement.

  1. India-born scientist Arogyaswami Joseph Paulraj and mathematics scholar Himanshu Asnani at Standford University have been awarded by the Marconi Society in Washington. They were chosen for the award for their technology contributions.


Paulraj was honoured for his pioneering work on developing wireless technology to transmit and receive data at high speed. Asnani was awarded with the Society's Paul Baran Young Scholar Award for contributing to point-to-point and multi-terminal channel coding and source coding problems.

  1. The Union Cabinet eased foreign investment rules in India-s construction sector in order to attract higher FDI. The FDI rules have been simplified to make it easier for investors to invest in the construction projects, sell assets or transfer their stakes and repatriate proceeds before the completion of a project


As per the new rule, the built-up area requirement for foreign direct investment (FDI) in construction projects was reduced to 20,000 square metres from 50,000 square metres. The minimum capital requirement has also been reduced to USD 5 million from existing USD 10 million.

  1. As per RBI notification, using ATMs to withdraw money or for other transactions beyond five times in a month will now attract Rs.20 per transaction from 1st November onwards. This will be applicable in six metros Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore where customers are allowed to withdraw money and/or carry out non-financial transactions at ATMs of banks, where they hold saving/current accounts, free of charge only five times a month.

  2. India's forex reserves increased by USD 495.5 million to USD 314.177 billion during the week ended 24thOctober, as per weekly report published by the RBI. The increase was mainly due to increase in foreign currency assets which increased by USD 5323.2 million to USD 288.332 billion during the same week.


However Special Drawing Rights and the India-s reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were decreased by USD 27 million and USD 9.7 million respectively while Gold Reserves remained unchanged at USD 20.013 billion.

  1. United Nations (UN) chief Ban Ki-moon has launched a global campaign to end the deadly practice of female genital mutilation in Kenya. More than 125 million girls and women have been cut in 29 countries in Africa and the Middle East.With the current trend, 86 million young girls are likely to undergo same form of the practice by 2030.


As per the UN, the practice of female genital mutilation is a violation of human rights. The U.N. General Assembly also adopted a resolution declaring zero tolerance for female genital mutilation (FGM) in 2012 to raise awareness against the practice.

  1. Lewis Hamilton won the United States Grand Prix on Sunday to extend his World Championship lead over others.His Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg secured 2ndplace while Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo secured third place in the race.

  2. Manufacturing activity in the eurozone grew at slower than expected rate in October as per the latest PMI data.The latest Markit compiled Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), an important parameter to judge performance of factory activity, increase marginally to 50.6 in October compared to 50.3 in September. Any reading higher than 50 indicates growth for the sector but reading of 50.6 indicates slower growth.

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has been awarded with one of Japan's top national awards for his contribution to India-Japan ties.He was chosen for the "The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers" for his significant contribution to improve bilateral relationship and friendship between Japan and India for about 35 years. Also the former Prime Minister is the first Indian to be awarded with Japan's top national awards.

  2. In a major blow to Congress party, Senior Congress leader and former union minister GK Vasan quit the national congress party today and announced his decision to float a new party in Tamil Nadu.He and his supporters have announced this decision during a press conference today.

  3. The India Economic Summit will be held in New Delhi from 4thNovember to 6thNovember under the theme "Redefining public-private cooperation for a new beginning". The World Economic Forum and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will jointly host the India Economic Summit.


This summit will focus on issues such as gender equality, smart cities and climate change, apart from business and industry. In this summit, 700 participants from 45 countries and Indian Union Ministers Arun Jaitley, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitaraman, Smriti Irani, Nitin Gadkari and Piyush Goyal are expected to attend.

  1. Justice Mukul Mudgal panel which was probing the spot fixing scandal in the IPL has submitted its final report on the role of N. Srinivasan and others in the scam to the Supreme Court in a sealed envelope today. The hearing of the case will happen on 10thNovember.

  2. India's manufacturing sector activity jumped marginally in October due to strong demand conditions and increase in new order flows.The HSBC India compiled Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), an important parameter to judge the performance of manufacturing sector, increased from 51 in September to 5.16 in October.


Any reading higher than 50 indicates growth in the sector. With this manufacturing activity increase for the 12th consecutive months in October.

  1. Veteran actor Sadashiv Amrapurkar, famous of playing some iconic villain characters in Hindi cinema, passed away at a Mumbai private hospital today. He was 64. He was suffering from a lung infection.


Before making his Hindi film debut with Ardh Satya, the actor had already established himself in Marathi theatre. He was also awarded with two Filmfare awards during his entire career.

  1. Central Zone won Duleep Trophy title of cricket for the year 2014-15 after defeating South Zone by 9 runs in the final match played at Feroz Shah Kotla Ground in New Delhi.This is the first Duleep trophy won by the Central zone in last 10 sessions and also it is the narrowest win in the long history of the tournament.

  1. Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge has been inducted into the three-member Chief Information Commissioner Selection committee. The committee will select the next Chief Information Commissioner (CIC), the post which is lying vacant now.


The other two members of the committee are Prime Minister Narendra Modi (as head) and Union Finance and Defence Minister Arun Jaitely. Mallikarjun Kharge has been added in the list as there is no leader of opposition in Lok Sabha now. The RTI Act requires that selection of the Chief Information Commissioner be done by a three-member panel comprising the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and a Cabinet Minister to be nominated by the Prime Minister.

  1. The Union Cabinet has recommended dissolution of the Delhi Assembly today after Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung submitted a report to the President asking for dissolution of the Delhi Assembly. All the political parties BJP, Aam Aadmi Party and Congress have expressed their unwillingness to form government and asked for fresh election. Fresh election may be held early next year.

  2. The central government has replaced Financial Services Secretary GS Sandhu with Hasmukh Adhia and made over 60 Special and Joint Secretary-level appointments.Hasmukh Adhia, a 1981-batch Gujarat-cadre IAS officer, presently working as Additional Chief Secretary in the Finance Department of Gujarat government.


GS Sandhu, a 1980-batch Rajasthan cadre IAS officer, has been made Chairman of the National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention. The DoPT has also issued orders for appointment of 26 Special Secretary-level officers and 35 at the level of Joint Secretary.

  1. In the latest ICC test rankings published in Dubai today, India has been ranked at 6thplace while Pakistan jumped to 3rdspot after their 2-0 series win against Australia. South Africa retained its number one rank followed by Australia at second place. Sri Lanka and England secured 4th and 5th spot respectively in the ranking.


No Indian batsman or bowler are placed in top ten list. India's Ravichandran Ashwin tops the list of All-rounders followed by Bangladesh's Shakibul Hasan and South Africa's Vernon Philander.
Kumar Sangakkara is ranked as the top batsman followed by South Africa's A B Devilliers and Shivnarain Chanderpaul. South Africa's Dale Steyn ranked as No 1 bowler followed by Ryan Harris and Rangana Herath.

  1. In USA, Republicans seized control of the Senate in mid-term elections as President Barack Obama continues to lose popularity among Americans. This will make difficult for him to complete his remaining two years terms in office.


With this, Republicans now have the control of the Senate along with the House of Representatives for the first time since elections in 2006. The country went to the polls last night to elect one third of the 100-seat Senate, all 435 members of the House of Representatives, 36 out of 50 state governors, and countless state and local offices. The mid-term elections are held in the middle of a presidential term.

  1. The Italian physicist Fabiola Gianotti has been appointed as first woman chief of CERN particle physics research centre. With this, she has become the first women to head one of the most important global scientific research institution.


She will replace Rolf Heuer and will take up the post in January 2016. Her appointment was decided at a meeting of the centre's ruling council. Earlier she led the CERN discovery of the Higgs boson particle successfully in 2012.

  1. European Union lowered its economic growth forecasts for the entire region which confirms lower growth and slow recovery for the biggest economies in the region including France, Spain, and Italy etc. Economic growth forecast for 18-country Eurozone was lowered to 0.8% compared to earlier prediction of 1.2%.


At the same time, Economic growth forecast for 28-country European Union was lowered to 1.3% compared to earlier forecast of 1.6%. This will lead to longer than expected recovery time for the entire region.

  1. Senior IRS officer Anita Kapur has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) which is the apex authority of the Income-Tax Department. She is a 1978-batch officer of the Income-Tax cadre and was serving as Member (Legislation and Computerisation and Income-Tax) in CBDT.


She succeeded incumbent CBDT Chairman K V Chowdary who retired on 31st October. Chowdary was later appointed as an Advisor to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money.

  1. India's largest mortgage financier HDFC became the first listed Indian company in the list of 30 sensex companies to have more than 75% shareholding by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs).Recently the FIIs raised their stake in the company to a record-high of nearly 78% during the last quarter.

  2. India's largest mobile operator by revenue and subscriber base, Bharti Airtel has called off its plans to acquire Mumbai based telecom operator Loop Mobile, as it failed to secure regulatory approvals. Loop Mobile-s licence will expire on 29thNovember this year and the company has no plans to extend the same. Post the date, it will be end of the service provider.


Bharti Airtel had announced acquisition of Loop Mobile, excluding employees in February to include all the subscriber base to expand its business.

  1. Indian pace bowler Bhuvaneswar Kumar has been awarded with the ICC People's choice award for the year 2014.He was chosen for the prestigious award from the list of four nominees based on public voting.With this, he became the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and M S Dhoni to win this award.


Three Indian players Virat Kohli, Mohd. Shami and M S Dhoni were included in the ICC ODI team of the year 2014 while no Indian player was included in the ICC Test team of the year 2014.

  1. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been ranked at No 1 place as per the Forbes's list of 100 most powerful people in the world published today. US President Barack Obama was pushed to No 1 position while China's Xi Jinping and Pope Francis secured No 3 and No 4 positions respectively in the same list.


Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was placed at 15th spot followed by Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani at 36th place and Lakshmi Mittal at the 57th place.
Only 7 women are included in the top 100 with Angela Merkel led the list at 5th place followed by Dilma Rousseff, Christine Lagarde and Virginia Rometty.

  1. TheEuropean Central Bank (ECB) has kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at record low of 0.05% during its recent monetary policy announcement.Also the ECB President Mario Draghi said that it would provide further stimulus to the struggling euro zone when required.

  2. The ICC selection panel chaired by the ICC's Cricket Committee chairman has selected its Test and ODI Teams of the Year. Sri Lanka team captain Angelo Mathews, has been named as captain of the ICC Test Team of the Year 2014.


Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was named as the captain of ICC ODI Team of the Year 2014. He has been selected in the ICC ODI team of the year for the eight time (seventh year in a row), while fifth year as a captain of the team.

  1. India's batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has unveiled his much-awaited autobiography 'Playing It My Way' yesterday in the presence of some of his former teammates, celebrities and family members at function in Mumbai.


He gave the first copy of the book to his mother Rajni and he presented another copy to his mentor and childhood coach Ramakant Achrekar earlier that day.

  1. India's financial capitalMumbai has the largest number of internet users in India in 2014, as per the study conducted by the Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). As per their report, Mumbai recorded 16.4 million internet users while Delhi has 12.15 million internet users and Kolkata has 6.27 million internet users.


Delhi recorded the fastest yearly growth rate of 50% in Internet user base among the top eight cities of India. India has nearly 243 million internet users as of June 2014.

  1. Social networking giant Facebook has a button for its users to donate money to fight against the deadly Ebola disease and virus. It is also deploying 100 satellite communication terminals to boost Internet and phone services in the Ebola-affected areas in West Africa.


With this option, Facebook users can directly donate to three nonprofits organizations, currently engaged in fighting against Ebola disease.

The US economy added 214,000 jobs in Octoberas economic growth improves for the world's largest economy.The unemployment rate dropped to 5.8% in October compared to 5.9% in the previous month of September. That is the lowest unemployment rate since July 2008 before one of the worst recession and financial crisis in 2008-09.

  2. Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo received his 2013-14 European Golden Boot award at the Meliá Castilla hotel in Madrid this week. He was awarded for being joint top-goal scorer last season in Europe along with Luis Suarez. Both of them hit 31 goals in the last season. This is also Ronaldo's third golden boot.

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi adopted Jayapur village in his Lok Sabha constituency today and strongly pitched to end the practice of killing of female foeticide today.


Referring to a recent report which found that 40% of children died young in a neighboring country as they did not wash their hands before eating, he also said all the villagers to pledge that they would not let their kids eat without washing hands.

  1. One Indian Navy sailor was killed and four were missing when a Torpedo Recovery Vessel of Indian Navy sunk off the Visakhapatnam coast today during a naval exercise. 23 people have been rescued and a search operation was launched for the missing persons.


As per Navy, "The vessel was on a routine mission to recover torpedoes fired by fleet ships during a routine exercise, when it experienced flooding in one of its compartments". The reason of this was flooding and it happened when the vessel was on its way back after collecting the "dummy" torpedo to be used for exercise.

  1. The Reserve Bank of India has asked all the banksto alert the account holders by a phone call and contact the base branch in case of high value or suspicious non-home cheques before clearing the same. The RBI also asked banks to send an SMS alert to payer or drawer when cheques are received for clearing andexamine cheques under UV lamp for clearance beyond 2 lakh rupees. The RBI also asked for multi-level checking before clearing cheques above 5 lakh rupees.

  2. Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD has projected 5.4% GDP growth for the Indian economy during the current year 2014 due to slow global economic recovery. This projected growth rate is slightly lower compared to 5.7% growth projected earlier.


As per OECD, India's GDP growth will improve to 6.4% in 2015 and 6.6% in 2016 due to higher investment.

  1. Laxmikant Parsekar was sworn in as New Chief Minister of Goa along with nine other Ministers at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan today.Goa Governor Smt Mridula Sinha administered the oath of the office and secrecy to the new Chief Minister.


Earlier, he was holding a portfolios of Health, Panchayat and Rural development in the Manohar Parrikar Government. He was chosen as the new Chief Minister as Manohar Parrikar resigned yesterday as Chief Minister to assume Central role and Union Minister.

  1. US fast food chain Burger King has opened its first store in India today at Select City Walkmall in New Delhi today. It has announced its plan to open about 12 outlets in India over the next 60-90 days. Last year, the chain announced a tie-up with the Everstone Group to enter in Indian market. It has also tied up with online e-commerce company eBay to launch its burgers online in India.

  2. India's leading private bankAxis Bank has signed a pact with the one of the largest banks in South Korea, NongHyup Bank (NH Bank), in order to improve cooperation in treasury, trade and other business between India and South Korea.This new deal will help to strengthen existing relationship between these two banks and to enhance cooperation in the areas of treasury, trade and other business.

  3. India's forex reserves increased by USD 1.732 billion to USD 315.910 billion during the week ended 31stOctober, as per weekly report published by the RBI. The increase was mainly due to increase in foreign currency assets which increased by USD 2.033 billion to USD 290.365 billion during the same week.


However Special Drawing Rights and the India's reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were decreased by USD 19.5 million and USD 7 million respectively while Gold Reserves decreased by USD 275 million to USD 19.738 billion.

  1. Group Chairman ofelectrical equipment maker Havells India Limited, Qimat Rai Gupta passed away on Friday. He was 77. He started the equipment maker Havells and transformed it to a multinational company with presence in 51 countries. He had recently made it to the Forbes' billionaire list for the first time and was ranked as India's 48th richest man with a net worth of USD 2 billion as of Sep 2014.

  2. Salgaocar FC won the Durand Cup in football for the third time after defeating Pune FC team in the final match played in Madgao today.


The team had earlier won the Durand Cup in 1999 and 2003. The winners got by 25 lakh rupees, while Pune FC got 15 lakh rupees. Bengaluru FC and Sporting Clube de Goa, other two semi-finalists, were awarded Rs 5 lakh each.

  1. Mercedes Formula 1 drive Nico Rosberg won the Brazilian Grand Prox held yesterday after defeating his Lewis Hamilton in Sao Paulo, Brazil. With this win, he kept alive his hopes of winning this year's world championship before the last race of the season.


His win also ended Hamilton's run of five straight wins and reduced his lead in the championship from 24 points to 17 with one race remaining. The final race of this season will be held in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on 23rd November where double points will be awarded.

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led NDA government has expanded its council of ministers yesterday as 21 new ministers were inducted in the union cabinet. Ministers including former Goa CM Manohar Parrikar and former NDA minister Suresh Prabhu were sworn in by the President.


The portfolios for the new ministers were announced late on yesterday night. Parrikar was given the defence portfolio while Prabhu was given railways. IIT-Delhi and Harvard Business School alumnus Jayant Sinha was named the new minister of state in the finance ministry while Olympic Gold medalist Rajyavardhan Rathore was made minister of state for information & broadcasting (I&B). Sadananda Gowda was moved from railways to the law ministry. He takes over from Ravi Shankar Prasad, who retains telecom ministry. Jaitley was given the additional charge of I&B ministry. Former Army Chief VK Singh was moved from northeast development to statistics and programme implementation.

  1. India has successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni-II missile with a strike range of more than 2000 km from the Wheeler Island off Odisha coast yesterday as part of a user trial by the Indian Army.It has a launch weight of 17 tonnes and can carry a payload of 1000 kg over a distance of more than 2,000 km.


Agni-II is part of the Agni series of missiles developed by DRDO which includes Agni-with more than 5,000 km range though the latest version is still under trial.

  1. Famous Hindi poet Dr Kedarnath Singh was awarded with the 49th Jnanpith Award for his outstanding contribution towards Indian literature. He was presented with the award by the President Pranab Mukherjee at a function in New Delhi.

  2. India's software product committee Indian Software Product Industry Round Table (iSPIRT) has launched iSPIxB2B index for the top 30 B2B software product companies. As per the index, there are 30 IT software product companies in India, which have a combined valuation of USD 6.2 billion. Also these companies together employ 18,250 people.


27% of these companies are having head quarter in Bangalore, 20% in NCR and rest are in different cities including Singapore and Silicon Valley in the USA.

  1. Famous Indian batsman Virat Kohli has become the fastest cricketer to reach 6000 One-Day International run mark in the history of ODI. He cross 6000 ODI runs in his 144thmatch and 136thinnings. He broke almost 2 decades old record of legendary West Indian Vivian Richards who crossed 6000 runs in 156 matches and 141 innings. With this, he has also become the eighth Indian to have scored 6000 or more runs and 47th overall.

  1. Global tech giant Microsoft launched Microsoft Lumia 535 with 5-megapixel front camera after removing Nokia brand name from the Lumia series. Lumia 535 is the first smartphone launched by Microsoft with its own branding after it acquired Nokia earlier this year. This officially ended the era of iconic brand Nokia which was once the largest mobile phone maker in the world.

  2. World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic started won his third straight title at the ATP World Tour Finals in London yesterday.He defeated Cilic 6-1, 6-1 in 56 minutes. This was also Djokovic's 16th victory against a Top 10 opponent in 2014.

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Nay Pyi Taw in Myanmar today to attend the ASEAN-India Summit and the East Asian Summit. Narendra Modi has started his 10-day 3-nations tour today and this is the first leg of his tour. After ASEAN-India summit, he will also visit Australia and Fiji.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today before leaving for the tour that India-ASEAN, East Asia and G-20 summits are taking place at a time when the world is facing multiple challenges. During the upcoming summits and bilateral meetings he will have an opportunity to meet over 40 leaders from different countries and also heads of many multilateral institutions.

  1. Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, launched "Jeevan Pramaan" - an Aadhar-based Digital Life Certificate for pensioners yesterday. This scheme aims to help more than a crore pensioners.


The proposed digital certification will do away with the requirement of a pensioner having to submit a physical Life Certificate in November each year, in order to ensure continuity of pension being credited into his account.

  1. India and Israel have successfully test fired aLong Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM)jointly developed by both the countries from a range in Israel on 10th November. The Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LRSAM) is successfully flight tested against a flying target in a range in Israel, as per an official statement said.


The LRSAM system is jointly developed by DRDO and IAI Israel. DRDO chief and Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister Dr Avinash Chander was present along with the IAI President Joseph Weiss during the test.

  1. Kerala has become the first state in India with bank accounts for all families, as per a formal declaration made by Kerala Finance Minister K M Mani in Thiruvananthapuram today. Under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, banks in Kerala opened nearly 13 lakh new accounts through intensive financial literacy campaigns launched under the aegis of the State Level Banker's Committee.

  2. Darjeeling Zoo or the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in West Bengal was chosen for the prestigious International Award "The Earth Heroes Award" for the year 2014. With this, it became the first Zoo of India to get this award. The Darjeeling Zoo is largest high altitude zoo of India and it competed among more than 300 zoos across the world to win this award.

  3. Hanumappa Sudarshan of Karuna Trust was named for the 10th India Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2014 award this week. The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, a sister organization of the World Economic Forum, in partnership with the Jubilant Bhartia Foundation announced the award.


The award was awarded at a high-level celebration in New Delhi which was attended by more than 700 participants from 45 countries. The winner will be invited to join the Schwab Foundation's global community of more than 250 social innovators.

Hockey India has announced the Hockey India Annual Awards wherein the top players in the men's and women's categories will be awarded with prize money of Rs. 25 lakh each.Each award will consist of a trophy, certificate and cash award.The awards announced are Dhruv Batra Player of the Year (Men), Dhruv Batra Player of the Year (Women), Upcoming Player of the Year, Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender, Best Midfielder, best Forward etc.


IIP growth jumped to 3-month high of 2.5% in September
India's Index of Industrial Production, the most important parameter to judge performance of industrial sector, growth jumped to 3-month high of 2.5% in September compared to 0.4% in in the previous month of August due to better growth in the manufacturing sector. IIP growth stood at 2.7% in the same month last year.
Manufacturing sector output, which constitutes over 75% of the index, grew by 2.5% in the same month compared to 1.4% contraction in the previous month and 1.4% growth in the same month last year. Capital goods sector output jumped by 11.6% in September compared to 6.6% drop in the same month last year.
During the April-September period of the current fiscal year 2014-15, the IIP recorded a growth of 2.8% compared to 0.5% growth in the same period last year. Better than expected IIP number increased confidence about India's industrial sector and the worst may be over for the Indian economy.
India-s retail inflation eases further to 5.52% in October compared to 6.46% in September
India's Retail inflation, measured by Consumer Price Index, eased further to 5.52% in October compared to 6.46% in September. This is the lowest retail inflation since the government started releasing the CPI data in 2012.
Consumer food price inflation dropped to 5.59% in October from 7.67% in previous month of September. Core inflation, which denotes prices for non-food and non-fuel items, dropped marginally to 5.85% in October compared to 5.9% in the previous month.
The urban area retail inflation eased to 5.55% in October compared to 6.34% in September while in rural areas retail inflation eased to 5.52% in October compared to 6.68% in September. This drop in retail inflation along with higher IIP growth number will give more room to RBI to immediately cut rates to boost growth.

  1. Tech giant Yahoo announced its acquisition of digital video advertising service BrightRoll for USD 640 million. This deal will help the Internet Company to expand its video advertising platform and help it to compete with other online ad-servicing players like Google and Facebook.


BrightRoll provides automated online video advertising services for some of the world's biggest brands.

  1. IT services company Cognizant has announced the acquisition of Odecee, which provides digital solutions to enterprises in the Australia and New Zealand region. This is Cognizant's third acquisition in last 3 months. It had acquired US-based TriZetto Corporation for USD 2.7 billion in September and US-based digital marketing agency Cadient in October.


Odecee delivers enterprise mobility, cloud based solutions and digital business solutions to its clients in different sectors. This acquisition will help Cognizant to expand its digital business transformation expertise and business in Australia and New Zealand region.

Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde has been appointed as Leader of Opposition in the House.


BJP government headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis won the confidence motion in Maharashtra assembly by a voice vote today amid protests by its former ally Shiv Sena and Congress. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which had offered outside support in the Maharashtra Assembly, did to vote during voice voting.

  1. Former Indian Cricket team Captain Kapil Dev launched SloPho, a social platform that will allow users to win prizes in games, contests, polls and quizzes on daily basis. The total prize money will be around Rs 25,000 daily and it will increase during special promotions and festival periods.


This platform will also enable businesses and SMEs to add campaigns based on region, language and other parameters like Facebook to get better return on their investments. They will also be able to promote their products on this platform.

  1. Famous filmmaker Ravi Chopra passed away in a Mumbai hospital today. He was 68. Son of late B.R. Chopra, Ravi was also known for directing films like The Burning Train, Baabul and Baghban etc. He became famous after directing the hit TV serial Mahabharata in the late eighties which was produced by his father B R Chopra.

  1. Global gold demand dropped to its lowest level in nearly five years in the third quarter of current year, as per the data published by the World Gold Council today. Total gold demand dropped by 2% to 929 tonnes in the third quarter. That is the lowest level of Gold consumption since the last quarter of 2009.


India overtook China as the largest Gold Consumer in the same quarter. Indian bought 225.1 tonnes of gold jewellery, coins and bars in the third quarter compared with 182.7 tonnes in China.

  1. Indian batsman Rohit Sharma created history today to become the first batsman ever to score two double centuries in ODIs while playing against Sri Lanka at Eden gardens in Kolkata. He scored 264 runs out of 151 balls with the help of 25 fours and 5 sixes and broke Virender Sehwag's 219 run record.


This is his second double centry in ODIs. His first (209) came against Australia in Bangalore in November 2013. India score total 404 runs in 50 overs and won the match with huge margin.

International Cricket Council has appointed five top cricketers as its ambassadors for the ICC Cricket World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand next year.These players include India's Virat Kohli, Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, Australia's Shane Watson and Mitchell Johnson and New Zealand's Brendon McCullum.

  1. The G-20 Australia summit for year 2014 started in in Brisbane in Australia where leaders of G20 are expected to discuss various points and issues. This summit will end tomorrow and currently being hosted at Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre at South Brisbane.

  2. European Space Agency's (ESA) Rosetta mission landed its Philae probe on the surface of Comet 67P/ Churyumov-Gerasimenko this week. With this, a probe landed on a comet for the first time in the space history.


Its key objective is share data about composition of the comet after landing on its surface. The spacecraft will continue to track comet 67P/C-G on its journey to the Sun and send pictures and other scientific details.

  1. Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson was declared "ICC Cricketer of the Year" and "ICC Test cricketer of the Year" on 15thNovember. He won the award for the second time in his career. Also he is only third Australian after Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke to win the Test Cricketer of the Year award.


South Africa's AB de Villiers was named ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year, and England's Gary Balance was named the ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year.

The Supreme Court has disclosed the names of persons involved in the Indian Premier League (IPL) spot-fixing probe submitted by the Mudgal Committee earlier this month.The SC disclosed the names of four persons which include BCCI president N Srinivasan and his son-in-lawGurunath Meiyappan, Rajasthan Royals team co-owner Raj Kundra and Chief Operating Officer of IPL Sundar Raman. The committee has also cleared cricketers Samuel Badree, Owais Shah and Stuart Binny as it could not find any evidence regarding their involvement in IPL-spot fixing.


After this, BCCI has postponed its meeting to elect N Srinivasan as the chief of BCCI and called for urgent meeting to discuss the matter.

  1. The Central government launched a nationwide mission called Bal Swachhta Mission on the occasion of Children's day to mark the 125th birth anniversary of the country's first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. The mission was launched by Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi.


Under this mission, a cleanliness drive would be organized in schools across the country between 14th and 19th November. Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani, who launched the Bal Swachhta Mission at the National Bal Bhavan, also launched Udaan programme for girls.

After Kerala declared that its every household have at least one bank account, Goa, Chandigarh, Puducherry, Lakshadweep and three districts of Gujarat- Porbandar, Mehasana, Gandhi Nagar, have also covered all households with at least one bank account under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), as per the statement from the Finance Ministry.


As per Finance Ministry, 7.24 crore accounts have been opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) of which 4.29 crore in rural and 2.95 crore are in urban areas till 10th November. RuPay Cards have been issued in case of 3.97 crore accounts.

  1. India has successfully test-firedSurface-to-surface nuclear-capable Dhanush ballistic missile from a naval ship off the Odisha coast on 14thNovember. Dhanush, a naval variant of India-s indigenously-developed Prithvi missile, was fired from a ship by the Strategic Force Command (SFC) of the defence force.

  2. Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata has been appointed to the board of Interpol Foundation this week. He will contribute to its two new global initiatives launched in order to combat against organized crime and terrorist activities by the international police organization.


Interpol Foundation said it is "honoured that Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata has accepted to sit on its board of trustee and contribute to the success of the Protecting Cultural Property and Modernising Channels of International Judicial Cooperation initiatives."

  1. Bollywood Actor, Director and Producer Farhan Akhtar has been appointed as UN Women Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia. With this, he has become the first male ever to be chosen as a Goodwill Ambassador in its history.


He will dedicate his efforts as UN Women's Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia towards the empowerment of women and girls. He will also serve as an advocate for UN Women's newly launched HeForShe initiative in advocating for gender equality and women's empowerment.

  1. Famous sports scribe and President of the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai Chandrasekhar P Sant passed away on 13rd November after a massive heart attack. He was 61. He was a former sports editor of Maharashtra Times and was a long-time treasurer of the Sports Journalists Federation of India.


He was also among the few Indian sports scribes who were present when Indian cricket team won the world cup in 1983.

  1. India's badminton players Saina Nehwal and K Srikanth stormed into the finals of the women's and men's singles events respectively at the China Open Super Series Premier today. Saina defeated World No. 17 Liu Xin of China 21-17 21-17 in the women's singles semifinals at the Haixia Olympic Sport Center.


World No. 16 Srikanth won the semifinal match as his opponent Germany's Marc Zwiebler retired midway with the score reading 21-11 13-7.

India's overall inflation drops further 5-year low of 1.77% in October
India's overall inflation, measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), dropped 5-year low of 1.77% in October compared to 2.38% in September, giving enough room to the RBI to cut rates to boost growth. Overall inflation stood at 7.24% in October last year.
The Food Price Index for October dropped steeply 2.7% compared to 3.52% in September.  The rate of price rise for onions, venerates were contracted by 59.77% and 19.61% respectively in the same month while price rise of protein rich items like eggs, meat and fish stood 2.58% in October.
With lowered wholesale inflation and retail inflation numbers, the RBI is expected to cut rates during its next monetary policy review meeting to be held in first week of December.

Turkey took over the presidency from Australia and will host the event in Antalya in 2015. China will host the next G20 Summit of the emerging economies in 2016. The G20 troika would now consist of Turkey, Australia and China.

  1. Klaus Iohannis won Romanian Presidential elections held recently. With this win, he will be the first President of Romania of foreign (German) origin.He will replace the incumbent President Traian Basescu.

  2. Japan's economy contracted by 1.6% in the third quarter (July-September) of the current year. With this, Japan's economy contracted for the second consecutive quarter, which marks a technical recession for the world's third largest economy.


Japan's economy was contracted by 7.3% in the previous quarter which was also the biggest fall since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. On quarter basis, the economy contracted by 0.4% in the third quarter from the previous one.

US basedpharmaceuticalcompany Actavis announced that it would acquire Botox-maker Allergan for USD 66 billion. Actavis is a global, integrated specialty pharmaceutical company focused on developing, manufacturing, and commercializing generic, branded pharmaceutical and bio similar products. The combined entity will be one of the top ten largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.


Allergan secured the deal with Actavis after overcoming the histile bid by activist investor William Ackman and Valeant Pharmaceuticals. The deal agreed with Actavis is worth USD 12 billion more than the other offer.

World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic won this year's ATP World Tour finals yesterday after Roger Federer withdrew from the title clash due to a back injury.This was Djokovic's fourth season ending title and with this win he also became the first man to win three World Tour Finals titles since Ivan Lendl in the 1980s.

  1. The Justice Mukul Mudgal panel's inquiry report on IPL spot fixing has given complete clean chit to former BCCI chief N. Srinivasan saying that he was not involved in match-fixing or illegal betting. The Supreme Court made public portions of the 35-page Mudgal report today. It will be a major relief for him as he can now come back as BCCI Chief.


The probe panel confirmed betting activities by Rajasthan Royals owner Raj Kundra and Chennai Super Kings team owner Gurunath Meiyappan in its final report. The report also said that Cricket administrator Sundaraman knew a contact of a bookie and had contacted him eight times in one season.

Radio Kashmir Jammu was awarded with the prestigious Gandhian Philosophy and Public Service Broadcasting award 2014 for its famous program Jeevan Rekha.The program isbased on the live broadcasts and rescue operations done by Radio Kashmir Jammu after the worst ever flood in last decades hit the Jammu and Kashmir state this year.


The Gandhian Philosophy and Public Service Broadcasting award was instituted to honor the visit of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi to the Studios of AIR at Broadcasting House, New Delhi on 12 November 1947.

Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Chairman CS Verma has been awarded with the IIM-JRD Tata Award for Excellence in Corporate leadership in Metallurgical Industries for the year 2014.He award consists a scroll of honour along with a cash prize of 5 lakh rupees, presented to him by Union Minister of Mines & Steel Narendra Singh Tomar.


He is the first Chairman from SAIL to receive this honour and also joins the list of famous persons who have been conferred with this award including Ratan N Tata and metro man Dr. E Sreedharan.

  1. International Boxing Association, AIBAunanimously gave permanent membership to the recently elected Boxing India during its quadrennial congress in Jeju Islands, Korea. With this, India-s boxing federation can again be part of International boxing organization.

  1. Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and K. Srikanth won the China Open Women's Singles and Men's singles Trophies respectively for the first time.Olympic Bronze medalist Saina defeated Japanese Akane Yamaguchi by 21-12, 22-20 while Srikanth beat two-time Olympic champion and five-time world champion China's Lin Dan of China by 21-19, 21-17 in their respective final matches held at Fuzhou, China.


This is Saina's third title of the year 2014. Before this she had won the Indian Open Grand Prix Gold, the Australian Super Series and also won the Bronze medal at the Incheon Asian Games. For Srikanth, this is the first title of 2014, he had won the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold last year.

  1. India has the world's largest number of youth population with 356 million 10-24-year-olds as per the United Nations Population Fund's (UNFPA) State of the World's Population report published today. This is despite the fact that India's population is lower than Chinese population.


China secured second spot with 269 million young people, followed by Indonesia (67 million), the US (65 million) and Pakistan (59 million), Nigeria with 57 million, Brazil with 51 million, and Bangladesh with 48 million, as per the same report. As per the report, total young population in the world stood at 1.8 billion among which 90% of young people live in less developed countries.

  1. China secured the top spot in the list of the world's fastest supercomputers for its Tianhe-2, as per a biannual Top 500 list published today. With this ranking, China retained the top spot for the fourth consecutive years.


Tianhe-2 was developed by China's National University of Defence Technology, having capability to operate at 33.86 petaflops per second (Pflop/s), the equivalent of 33,860 quadrillion calculations per second.

  1. Finnish giant Nokia announced its first Android tablet named as the N1. The tablet will be launched in China in Q1 2015 and its OEM partner (Foxconn) will manufacture, distribute, and sell the product. Tech giant Microsoft bought its handset business earlier this year.

  2. UK inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index, increased marginally to 1.3% in October compared to 1.2% in the previous month.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Communication Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad re-launched the Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) investment scheme today to secure household savings for funding huge upcoming infrastructure development in India. This scheme will also help people to stay away from the Ponzi schemes.


People can invest in the scheme in the denomination of Rs. 1000, Rs. 5,000, Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 50,000 without any upper limit for an investor. Investments made in this scheme will be double (100% return) in 100 months or 8 years 4 months. It will have a lock-in period of 2 years and 6 months but no tax benefit will be available for the same.

  1. India and Australia have signed five pacts on social security, transfer of sentenced prisoners, combating narcotics trade andtrafficking, tourism, and Arts and Culture during the presence of Prime Ministers of both the countries.Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott have also agreed to have a Free Trade deal by 2015 end.


As per the deal, India will organize a Make in India show in Australia in 2015 while Australia will hold a business week in India in January 2015.

  1. India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed surface-to-air missile 'Akash' from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha today. The test-fire was a practice and evaluation trial performed by the Indian Air Force. A repeat performance as the medium range missile had been test-fired successfully from the same test range a day before.


'Akash' missile is a medium range surface-to-air anti-aircraft defence system with a strike range of 25 km. It can carry a warhead of 60 kg and target any aircraft up to 30 km.

  1. The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has recommended Sutirtha Bhattacharya as the next chairman and managing director of the state run PSU mining giant Coal India Ltd. He is an Andhra Pradesh cadre IAS of 1985 batch and currently working as the chairman of Telangana based Singareni Collieries Co Ltd (SCCL).

  2. Famous classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj was awarded with the Sumitra Charat Ram Award 2014 for Lifetime Achievement.With this, he joined the famous people who were awarded with the same award earlier including pandit Birju Maharaj, Kishori Amonkar and Mayadhar Raut.


The award was instituted in 2011 to honour famous persons in art and was named after Sumitra Charat Ram who founded the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra in 1952.

  1. The Government has nominated Hasmukh Adhia as the Director of Central Board of Directors of the RBI. He is currently working as a Secretary of Department of Financial Services. His nomination is effective from 11thNovember, 2014.

The TSR Subramaniam Committee which was constituted to review the existing environment laws and processes and acts of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, has submitted its report today. The report was submitted to Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar.


As per him, the recommendations of the report will help Ministry to avoid undue delays, ensure transparency and quick clearances and implementation of projects.

  1. Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar has been chosen for the C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award for 2014 by the BCCI today.He will be presented a citation, trophy and Rs. 25 lakh cheque at the eighth annual BCCI Awards Ceremony to be held on Friday to recognize and reward India's top performers in the 2013-14 season.


A committee comprising interim BCCI president Shivlal Yadav, Secretary Sanjay Patel and senior journalist Shekhar Gupta chose him for the award. Former Indian captain of the 1983 World cup winning team, Kapil Dev was awarded with the award in 2013.

India-s exports dropped by 5.04% in October; Trade deficit jumped due to high Gold Imports
India's exports dropped by 5.04% in October compared to same month last year to USD 26.09 billion due to lower exports from major sectors such as engineering, pharma and gems and jewellery. India's Export declined for the first time in last 6 months in October due to lower demand from USA and other European Countries.
At the same time, overall imports jumped by 3.62% to USD 39.45 billion in the same month due to high Gold imports. Oil imports in October dropped by 19.2% to USD 12.36 billion while Gold imports, which jumped manifold to USD 4.17 billion in the same month. Trade deficit jumped to USD 13.35 billion in October compared to USD 10.59 billion in October 2013. Government is working with RBI to introduce new measures again to reduce Gold Imports in order to check Trade deficit.
During April-October period of the current fiscal year, India's total exports increased by 4.72% to USD 189.79 billion and total imports increased by 1.86% to USD 273.55 billion. Trade deficit for the same duration stood at USD 83.75 billion compared to USD 87.31 billion during the same period last year.

The Finance Ministry has directed state run Insurance giant Life Insurance Corporation to immediately operationalize the benefit of life cover issued under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY).LIC has been asked by the Ministry to enter into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Banks Association (IBA) for providing this facility to all the bank account holders who opened bank account under the PMJDY scheme. Earlier the Finance Ministry directed NPCI to enter into MoU, but now NCPI will be out of this arrangement.


As a part of PMJDY scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a life cover of Rs 30,000 with the RuPay card for all the enrollees of the scheme. As per the announcement, the benefit would be made available for all those who subscribe to a bank account for the first time during the period 15th August 2014 to 26th January 2015.

  1. The Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has shown confidence in Indian economy and said in its later report that Indian economy is showing signs of turnaround. It has projectedIndia's GDP growth at 5.4% in the current financial year 2014-15 which will increase to 6.6% in next financial year 2015-16 and 6.8% in 2016-17,as per its latest Economic Survey of India.


As per OECD, Indian economy will recover at faster pace compared to other economies. It also said that Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi needs to implement more reforms in the coming months to place the country on a strong, sustainable and inclusive growth path.

  1. Andhra Bank launched two new schemes for children and teenagers with the aim of financial inclusion. The scheme named as "AB Little Stars" was launched for children in age group of 10-15 years and their parents stands as guardians. Another scheme named as "AB Teens"was also launched for teenagers between 15-18 years. With this scheme, Internet banking, ATM card, mobile banking and cash transfer will be provided to the customers.

The number of people using Interned in India is projected to touch 302 million by the end of this year due to higher growth in Internet usage on mobile devices, according to a report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International.With this, India will also overtake the USA as the second-largest Internet market in the world just after China.


As per the report, the number of Internet users in India is expected to grow 32% to 302 million this year compared to 213 million at the end last year which will further to 354 million by June 2015. Currently China leads the list with more than 600 million internet users followed by USA with around 279 million and India with 278 million internet users. Of the 278 million users, 177 million are in urban India, while the rest 101 million are in rural area.

  1. Indian American Neha Gupta has been awarded with the prestigious International Children's Peace Prize 2014 for her contribution to help orphans in India and other vulnerable children.With this award, she also became the first ever American to be awarded with the prize.


She was awarded the prize by Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu the patron of the Dutch children's rights organization in The Hague, Netherlands. Nobel Peace prize winner Malala Yousufzai won this award in previous year 2013.

  1. Singapore has been ranked as the No 1 place in the world in terms of ease in doing business, as per the latest report published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The report ranked Singapore at No 1 position out of 82 countries for its efficient and open economy. With this Singapore secured the No 1 rank for seven consecutive years.


Singapore is followed by Switzerland, Australia, Hong Kong and Sweden in the first 5 positions respectively.

  1. Global internet company Yahoo finalized a deal with Firefox maker Mozilla Corp to replace Google as the default search engine on the Firefox Web browser in the United States in order to boost search market share in the USA.


As per the deal, users of the Firefox browser in the USA will automatically be routed to search results on Yahoo's website whenever they type a query in the search box that appears at the top of the browser. Yahoo has been struggling to gain search market share for a long time and this deal will help Yahoo to regain some of its lost market share to other search engine companies Google and Microsoft.

  1. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been chosen among 50 global leaders, business chiefs and pop icons as contenders by famous Time magazine for its annual 'Person of the Year' honour. The Time "Person of the Year 2014" will be announced next month based on the votes received by them. Pope Francis was honoured as the 'Person of the Year' for previous year 2013.

The Supreme Court directed CBI Director Ranjit Sinha to recuse himself from all investigations into the famous 2G spectrum allocation case today and handed over the case to the senior-most officer after Sinha. The court did not provide detailed reason for this order to protect CBI's reputation. This ruling came just 12 days before he was set to retire as the Chief of CBI.


A bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu refused to pass an elaborate order on the issue saying that it would "tarnish the image and reputation" of the premier agency.

  1. 45th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) began at Panaji in Goa today as Bollywood mega Star Amitabh Bachchan opened the function as Chief Guest. The festival started with screening of a film of renowned Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf.

  1. The Board of Directors of Kotak Mahindra Bank has approved merger of ING Vysya Bank with Kotak Bank today. The board has approved a share swap ratio of 725 equity shares of Rs. 5 each of Kotak Mahindra Bank for every 1000 equity shares of Rs. 10 each held in ING Vysya Bank.


This deal requires approval of shareholders of both the private sector banks and regulatory approvals from the Reserve Bank of India and Competition Commission of India for completion. Shares of both the companies witnessed steep gains with Kotak Mahindra Bank share price rising nearly 8% and and ING Vysya share price jumping nearly 14%. Both stocks hit their 52-week highs today.

  1. Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has approved Mahindra Group's proposal to sell its Australia-made airplanes named as Mahindra Gipps in India. These are used as utility planes with seating capacity of 5 to 10 seats.


The proposal was approved after the go ahead from the Indian regulator Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) accepted the type certification issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the single piston engine aircraft Mahindra Gipps.

  1. Indian author Neel Mukherjee's book Lives of Otherswas shortlisted for Costa Book Awards under the Novel Award category on 19thNovember. The award will be announced on 5thJanuary 2015. The book is based upon the Naxalite movement of the 1960s and unfolds a family history. Earlier the same novel was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in this year but failed to win the award.


Along with him, 10 male and 10 female authors are selected for this year award and awards will be given five categories i.e. first novel, novel, biography, poetry and children's book. Winners in the five categories will receive 5000 pounds each while the overall winner of the Costa Book of the Year 2014 will receive 30000 pounds.

  1. Indian Rubber Board has been selected for the Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Award (First Prize) for excellence in the implementation of the official language policy for the year 2013-14 by the Department of Official Language under Ministry of Home Affairs.


Chairman of Rubber Board, A Jayathilak received the award from the President of India Pranab Mukherjee in a function held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

  1. Indian IT Services Company Infosys limited has fired CFO of its subsidiary Infosys BPO, Abraham Mathews for violating code of Conduct. The exit was linked to its overcharging to its client Apple Inc.


Infosys BPO chief executive officer Gautam Thakkar resigned on "moral grounds" and would leave the company on 30th November. Senior Vice President Anup Upadhyay has been appointed as the new CEO of Infosys BPO.

  1. India-s fifth largest software services exporter, Tech Mahindra has signed a deal to acquire US-based Lightbridge Communications Corporation (LCC) for USD 240 million.


LCC is a global network services leader and one-of-the world's largest independent global providers of network engineering services to the telecommunications industry. It has nearly 5000 employees in 50 countries. This deal will help Tech Mahindra to strengthen its service offerings in telecom industry and expand its business in the same sector.

India's largest bank, State Bank of India hasa Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Adani Enterprise for a loan of up to USD 1 billion for the mine, rail and port project in Australiawhich will be built by 2017. This loan will be the largest loan offered by an Indian bank for an overseas project.

  2. Indian telecom company Uninor has appointed Vivek Sood as CEOas former CEO Morten Karlsen Sorby steps down as CEO of Uninor due to illness in his immediate family. Karlsen Sorby will assume a new role in Telenor Group. Uninor has also appointed a new CMO, Upanga Dutta. All the changes are effective from 1st December 2014.

  1. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has named Additional Director RK Dutta to lead the agency's 2G spectrum case probe team. He replaced CBI Director Ranjit Sinha who was removed by the Supreme Court from the 2G spectrum case.


RK Dutta, a 1981 batch IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre, is now in charge of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the agency.

  1. Central Government has approved Rs 43,033-crore rural electrification scheme named as "Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana" in order to provide 24x7 power in every part of the country. This newly launched scheme will replace the existing Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY).


The scheme aims to improve hours of power supply in rural areas, reduction in peak load and to provide electricity access to all the rural households.

  1. Future Consumer Enterprise, a part of Kishore Biyani's Future Group, acquired iconic southern supermarket chain Nilgiris for around Rs 300 crore. Uture Group acquired 97.97% of the retail chain, as per regulatory filling to BSE, in which it acquired 65% stake from PE fund Actis Capita and the remaining stake from the promoter, the Mudaliar family. Post this acquisition, the Nilgiri Dairy Farm, will become a subsidiary of Future Consumer Enterprise.

  2. Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has de-recognised Delhi Stock Exchange (DSE) this week due to allegations of serious irregularities in its functioning. SEBI observed that the activities of DSE were carried out in a manner which did not protest interest of the investors.

  3. India's forex reserves increased by USD 419.4 million to USD 315.55 billion in the week ended 14thNovember, 2014, as per the weekly report published this week. Foreign currency assets were increased by USD 422.7 million to USD 290.062 billion in the same week.


Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) and the India's reserve position in the International Monetary Fund dropped marginally by USD 2.4 million and USD 0.9 million respectively. Gold Reserves remained unchanged at USD 19.73 billion in the same reporting week.

  1. Indian badminton player Saina Nehwal secured No 4 rank in the women'ssingles rankings after jumping one place in the list while another player PV Sindhu maintained her 10thrank in the same list, as per the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released this week.

  1. Two Kerala-born Indian Catholics Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Sister Euphrasia were canonized by Pope Francis at St Peter's Square in Vatican yesterday. Special prayers and meetings were held in all places linked to the life and death of Chavara and Euphrasia in Kerala.

  2. India's Ms Deborah has created history in National Level by winning four Gold Medals in the Track Asia Cup Cycling Championship 2014 held at Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi. Deborah won both the two gold medals in the women's elite keirin and sprint finals on the concluding day of the championship for an overall individual tally of four gold.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said in its report that the global economy will gradually improve over the next two years while Japanese economy will grow at a lower rate and Euro zone will struggle with stagnant growth and deflation. As per OECD report, The United States and Britain will grow more strongly compared to the Euro Zone countries and Japan. Among emerging economies, India, Indonesia and South Africa are set to recover steadily while Russia's economy will stagnant and Chinese economic growth will slow down. It has projected world economic growth rate at 3.3% in 2014, 3.7% in 2015 and 3.9% in 2016.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed today (25th November) across the world to raise awareness about violence against women and discuss solutions for betterment of women community.The campaign called Orange Your Neighbourhood to raise awareness against Gender-Based Violence will be held from 25th November to 10th December 2014. The campaign is part of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's campaign UNiTE to End violence against Women.

  1. Australia Test batsman Phil Hughes has been rushed to St Vincent's Hospital in critical condition after being stuck by a bouncerSean Abbott during a Sheffield Shield match between South Australia and NSW at the SCG. He is in a state of induced coma and is currently undergoing surgery.


Earlier he suffered injury while attempting to hook a rising fast delivery from Sean Abbott but was hit on the side of his head instead. Post that, he collapsed on the ground and rushed to hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Nepal today to attend SAARC meet where he is expected to meet Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif as well.Today he and Nepal PM Sushil Koirala have jointly flagged off Nepal-India friendship passenger bus service which will run on daily basis between Kathmandu and New Delhi. The Prime Minister also presented a Dhruv helicopter to Nepal at Kathmandu.

  2. The government has launched the "Swachh Bharat Kosh" today with the aim to achieve cleanliness across the country. The fund will be utilized to build toilets in schools of rural and urban areas.


The fund will be set up by the Ministry of Finance and will be managed by a Governing Council headed by Expenditure Secretary, as per Government guidelines. Its functioning will be monitored on quarterly basis by the Finance Minister and the Prime Minister from time-to-time. The Prime Minister himself will acknowledge contributions of over Rs 1 crore made by individuals and of over Rs 20 crore by corporates.

Former Supreme Court judge CK Prasad is all set to be appointed as the next Chairperson of the Press Council of India.He was selected by a committee headed by Vice-President Hamid Ansari, as per the information received from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. He will succeed Justice Markenday Katju as the Chairman of the PCI.

  2. Om Pizza & Eats Pvt Ltd, the Indian franchisee of Papa John's International, acquired local rival pizza chain Pizza Corner for an undisclosed sum. Pizza Corner has 70 outlets in Southern India while Papa John's has 15 restaurants across India. Post this deal, Pizza Corner brand will be removed from all of its stores and all of them will be re-branded as Papa John-s.

  3. Famous Kathak danseuse Sitara Devi passed away today morning at Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai. She was 94. She was admitted to the Hospital few days back and was put on ventilator after her health deteriorated yesterday morning.


She was honored with prestigious awards like Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shri and Kalidas Samman. She had also impressed Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore with a three-hour solo recital after her family moved to Mumbai.

  1. The US economy growth was revised upward for the third quarter (July-September) of the current year. US economy grew at an annualised rate of 3.9% in the same quarter compared to earlier estimation of 3.5%.US economy grew at 4.6% in the second quarter. Consumer spending, which accounts for 70% of US economic activity, grew by 2.2% in the third quarter. This confirms increased optimism about the world-s largest economy and improved job market.

  1. China has been ranked at No1 position in terms of FII investment among Asian economies in November till 24th November, as per a report published by HSBC. Asian economies has seen total USD 5.3 billion FII investment in equity market in which China has attracted YSD 2.3 billion to secure No1 place.


Indian secured second place with USD 1.4 billion FII investment in equity market followed by Thailand at third spot.

  1. India remembered the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks on its sixth anniversary today with different functions organized in the city to pay tribute to the martyrs who lost their lives fighting the terrorists.

10 Pakistani terrorists landed in Mumbai city by sea route on 26th November 2008 and opened fire at people killing 166 and injuring several other people. Then Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare, Army Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Mumbai's Additional Police Commissioner Ashok Kamte and Senior Police Inspector Vijay Salaskar were among those killed in the attack.

India's biggest dairy brand Amul has celebrated National Milk Day today (26thNovember) across India to mark the 92nd birth anniversary of late Milk Man Verghese Kurian.He (1921-2012) was the father of the India's White Revolution also known as the Milkman of India as he dedicated his life to bringing together milk-producing farmers in cooperatives country-wide.


He also transformed India from a milk-deficit country into the world's largest milk producing country in three decades and empowered hundreds of thousands of poor milk producers across the country.

  1. The Lok Sabha passed the Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Bill, 2014 by voice vote during its winter session which started from yesterday. As per new bill, CBI director will be chosen by a panel comprising ofPrime Minister, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha or the leader of the Single largest party in the House and Chief Justice of India or any Supreme Court Judge. The Bill also makes a provision that no appointment will be invalid merely because of vacancy or absence of a member of the panel.

An Assam-based NGO named as "Aaranyak" which is currently working for the conservation of nature and a Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) won United Nations Lighthouse Activities award for the year 2014.These two entities were awarded under the focus area of information and communication technology (ICT) solutions.

  3. Global Rating agency Moody's Investors Service has kept India's sovereign rating outlook stable at "Baa3", but the future outlook will depend on the reform measures taken by the Government. The credit rating for 2015 will depending on high fiscal expenditures, recurrent food price inflation, and wide infrastructure deficit, as per Moody's latest report.


With this, all the major three credit rating agencies, S&P, Moody's and Fitch have given "BBB" rating for India with Stable Outlook. This current rating is just below investment grade rating.

  1. Kotak Mahindra Bank has become the first bank to get the Reserve Bank of India's approval to set up a wholly-owned non-life insurance company this week. It received approval from RBI to form a 100% subsidiary to enter general insurance industry. The bank is already the promoter of a life insurance company in partnership with Old Mutual of South Africa.


RBI guidelines allow a bank to hold maximum stake of 50% in insurance joint venture. However, RBI allowed some exceptions, like SBI and ICICI Bank which holds 74% in their insurance entities while the rest 26% is held by foreign entities.

Indian tennis player Sania Mirza has been appointed the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the South Asian region by UN Women at an event which was organized to mark the International Day to End Violence against Women yesterday.With this, she became the first South Asian woman to be appointed the goodwill ambassador in the organisation's history. In her capacity as the goodwill ambassador, she is expected to educate women about gender equality.


The other Goodwill Ambassadors include British actor Emma Watson, Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman, HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha  Mahidol of Thailand, and Indian actor-filmmaker-singer Farhan Akhtar.

Australia and New South Wales batsman Phillip Hughes passed away today at a Sydney hospital after being hit on the head by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield game on Tuesday. He was just 25 years old and considered to be a rising star of Australian Cricket. He felt unconscious after the accident and had been in critical condition after doctors performed emergency brain surgery. It is definitely a sad day for the sports.


He became the youngest player to score a century in each innings of a Test when he achieved the feat against South Africa in his second appearance. He played 26 Tests, 25 ODIs and a solitary Twenty20 international match.

  1. Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched the tourist visa on arrival facility for 43 countries today. The system is enabled by electronic travel authorization and it will make travel easier for foreign tourist from those 43 countries as they will be able to travel to India anytime within 30 days of the approval. This online visa will be valid for 30 days stay in India. This facility is expected to boost tourism sector as more foreign tourists will find it easier to travel to India post this facility.

The Supreme Court today observed that IPL team Chennai Super Kings, owned by former BCCI President N Srinivasan should be terminated without further enquiry as one of its officials Gurunath Meiyappan has been indicted in IPL match fixing by an inquiry committee.The apex court has also asked N Srinivasan to give details about who controls Chennai Super Kings owned by India Cements.


The court has also directed BCCI to hold fresh election for the President Post and barred N Srinivasan from contesting in the election. It said the the board will take the next decisions on the IPL- spot fixing scam.

  1. Indian President Pranab Mukherjee wrote a book titled "The Dramatic Decade: The Indira Gandhi Years". This book was published by Rupa Publishes and will be released on 11thDecember 2014."The Dramatic Decade" is the first of a three-part volume; the second one will cover events from 1981-88 and the third volume will cover events from 1988 to 2012.

  1. Amazon is set to acquire Indian online e-commerce site Jabong.com for nearly USD 1.2 billion which marks for Consolidation of India-s e-commerce sector. If completed, this deal will be the biggest one in India's e-commerce space, much higher than FlipKart's acquisition of Myntra for nearly USD 340 million.

Mozambique has recently become a hydrocarbon rich nation following offshore gas discoveries in two adjacent offshore blocks.

  1. The Reserve Bank of India has issued final guidelines for payments and small banks yesterday with the aim of taking banking business accessible to more people and small businesses. The RBI plans to push financial inclusion by setting up small banks which can have better presence across the country and can accept deposits. This will help more entities to get new bank licences who had missed this opportunity in April this year.


As per the RBI, the minimum paid-up equity capital required for both small and payment banks is Rs. 100 crore. These small banks will take care of basic banking activities including accepting deposits and lending to under-served sections, small business houses, farmers and small industries and unorganised sector entities.
All resident individuals and professionals with experience in banking and finance; and companies and societies, existing non-banking finance companies (NBFCs), microfinance institutions and local area banks can opt for this option to set up a small bank. Large public sector entities and industrial and business houses, including NBFCs promoted by them, will not be entertained to set up small banks.

  1. India-s leading stock market Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) crossed the milestone of Rs 100 lakh crore for the first time after rising to record high level today. Also it has become one of the top 10 largest exchanges in the world in terms of total market capitalization of listed companies.


The BSE is now ranked at 10th position globally with a market cap of over USD 1.6 trillion which is Rs 100 lakh crore in Rupee terms. It is also the largest exchange in the world in terms of number of listed companies. National Stock Exchange (NSE) secured No 11 rank in terms of market capitalization of its listed companies.
New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is the no 1 exchange in the world with a total market capitalization of USD 19.1 trillion, followed by Nasdaq OMX, Japan Exchange Group of Tokyo, Euronext and Hong Kong Exchanges in the top five.

  1. European Union lawmakers voted in favor of a motion urging anti-trust regulators to break up Google this week. Global tech giant has been in the radar of European Union-s regulators due to different privacy issues, copyright and tax related issues. The non-binding resolution is also the strongest motion passed in the European Parliament related to Europe's concern with the growing power of US tech giants.

  2. Crude Oil prices dropped to four-year low as the OPEC decided not to cut crude oil output by its member countries.Brent crude oil price touched four-year low price of USD 71.12 a barrel this week. The price was dropped by around USD 5 per barrel after OPEC took the decision not to cut price.

  3. The euro zone inflation rate dropped to 0.3% in November compared to 0.4% in October which increases possibility of deflation across the 18-member region.Now ECB has to take actions including fresh round of quantitative easing in order to boost growth and demand to avoid deflation.

The Prime Minister has organized a meeting with the Chief Ministers of all the states in December to seek their view points on the structure of the institution which will replace the current Planning Commission.After that the name and structure of the new institution will be finalized which will replace the 64-year old planning commission.

Former Union Minister GK Vasan, who broke away from the Congress party earlier this month, has launched a new political party named as the -Tamil Maanila Congress-.The party has also requested the Election Commission to give Cycle as their party symbol.He along with former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President BS Gnanadesikan, former Trichy mayor Sarubala Thondaiman and many other followers parted ways with Congress earlier this month to launch this new party.

  3. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first train from Mendipathar in Meghalaya to Guwahati this week. With this launch, Meghalaya is now connected with other parts of the country using railway network.

  4. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) eased gold imports norms and scrapped 20:80 scheme which was launched in 2013 in order to reduce Gold Imports and check rising current account deficit.This new norm is expected to reduce gold smuggling into the country.
    Under the 20:80 scheme, 20% of the imported gold had to be mandatorily exported as finished products like jewellery. Initially only public sector firms and banks were allowed to import gold and later in May 2014 these rules were slightly eased to star and premier export houses.

  5. Mauritius emerged as the largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) in India after contributing around USD 4.19 billion in the April-September period of the current financial year,as per the data published by Finance Ministry. Singapore secured the second place with USD 2.41 billion FDI followed by the Netherlands at USD 1.95 billion and USA at USD 1.19 billion during the same period.
    Singapore had overtaken Mauritius as the largest source of FDI in India in the previous financial year 2013-14 which accounted for about 25% of total FDI inflows in the fiscal. In the previous financial year, India had received FDI of USD 5.98 billion from Singapore and USD 4.85 billion from Mauritius.

  6. Russian film -Leviathan- directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev won the best film award at the 45th International film Festival of India, which was concluded in Goa today.The award contains a Golden Peacock and Rs.40 lakh cash award.

  7. Famous historian of modern India-s economic and social history, Tapan Raychaudhuri passed away on 26th November at his home in Oxford, England.He was 88. He was an Indian historian specializing in British Indian history, Indian economic history and the History of Bengal.

  8. Famous theatre personality and founder of the Adishakti Laboratory for Theatre Arts and Research near Auroville, Veenapani Chawla, passed away today after a sudden heart attack. She was 67. She was awarded with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Puruskar for her contribution to Indian theatre as a director. She was considered a pioneer of experimental theatre in India. She established Adishakti in 1981 and was also its Managing Trustee and Artistic Director.

  9. Two-time World Championship bronze medalist P V Sindhu defended her Macau Grand Prix Gold trophy after defeating Kim Hyo Min of Korea in the women's singles final match held in Macau on today. This is also her first title of this season. World No. 11 Sindhu defeated 91st-ranked Korean player Kim by 21-12 21-17 in the final match held at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion here.

  10. PSPB (Petroleum Sports Promotion Board)-s Abhishek Yadav has won the boys' singles title in the 76th Junior National and Youth Table Tennis Championships. He defeated his team mate Sudhanshu Grover by Four games to one in the final match played at Alappuzha, Kerala today. Manika Batra of the PSPB retained the crown in the girl-s single category while Manav Thakkar of the PSPB Academy emerged champion in the Junior Boys' section. It was a rare hat-trick of titles for the PSPB in the championship.


India-s Economic growth eased marginally to 5.3% in Second quarter of FY-15; RBI need to cut rates
India-s economic growth eased marginally to 5.3% in the second quarter of the current financial year compared to 5.7% growth seen in the previous quarter. GDP growth stood at 5.2% in the same quarter of the previous financial year. With this, the economic growth stood at 5.5% in the first half of the current financial year compared to 4.9% in the same period last financial year.
The manufacturing sector, which accounts for nearly 14% of the economy, grew by just 0.1% in the same quarter compared to 3.5% growth in the previous quarter and 1.3% growth in the same quarter last year. With this falling industrial and economic growth, RBI is now in pressure to cut rates during its next monetary policy review meet next week in order to boost growth.
