1. Syria's entire declared stock of chemical weapons has been placed under seal, inspectors said yesterday, as international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi completed a visit to muster support for peace talks. All stocks of chemical weapons and agents have been placed under seals that are impossible to break," Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons spokesman Christian Chartier said, adding that the seals were "tamper proof."

2. Six major central banks in the world made currency swap arrangements permanent yesterday as a prudent liquidity backstop  in case of future global financial strains. Previously these banks had temporary bilateral currency swap arrangements. Names of Six major central banks are The Bank of Japan, U.S. Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, Bank of England, Central bank of Canada and Central bank of Switzerland.

3. Famous global magazine Forbes has announced German chancellor Angela Merkel as the most powerful woman in the world for the third consecutive year. Dilma Rousseff, the Brazilian president, secured second place and Melinda Gates, co-chairman of the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation secured third place in the list. India-s

4. William C. Lowe, who invented Personal Computer (PC) for IBM and made it affordable for all, passed away on 19th October. He was 72. He had a bold idea IBM should develop a personal computer that could be mass marketed, expanding the company's reach beyond businesses and into people's homes.  That was in 1980. One year later, the IBM 5150 personal computer was selling out at stores for $1,565, not including a monitor.

5. Google launched a new flagship Android phone yesterday, a Nexus 5 made by Korean firm LG which runs the latest version of the mobile operating system dubbed 'KitKat'. The phone, which sports a 5-inch (12.7 cm) high definition display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chip and an advanced 8 megapixel rear camera, offers up to 17 hours of talk time and is available in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan and Korea.

6. China's manufacturing activity jumped at its fastest pace in 18 months in October, increasing optimism about world's second-largest economy. The official Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), an important parameter to judge performance of the sector, jumped to 51.4 in October from 51.1 in September. Any reading higher than 50 indicates expansion in the sector.

7. Scientists discovered a new planet called Kepler 78b which has a similar mass and density to that of Earth.It orbits a star 400 light years away. Kepler78b is composed mostly of rock and iron, very similar to our own planet.

1. Nation pays tribute to the veteran freedom fighter and Independent India-s first Home Minister, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel on his 137th birth anniversary yesterday. Popularly known as the -Iron Man of India-, he was awarded Bharat Ratna in the year 1999. On this occasion, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today laid foundation stone of Statute of Unity, a 182-metre tall statue of "iron man" Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

2. Recommending much-awaited reforms in the functioning of the bureaucracy in India, a bench led by Justice K S Radhakrishnan said that the Parliament must enact a law to regulate postings, transfers and disciplinary action against bureaucrats. Now it has directed all the bureaucrats to work only on written orders from politicians, not on any oral orders. The Supreme Court has also directed the Centre and State governments to pass an order within three months, on giving fixed tenure to civil servants.

3. India and Cuba have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in broadcasting between Prasar Bharati and Cuban Radio and Television Institute (ICRT). The MoU was signed by India's ambassador to Cuba Chinthapalli Rajasekhar and vice-president of the ICRT Emillio Moises Garcia Borroto. Under the agreement both countries will explore co-production opportunites on matters of mutual interest.

4. MCX Stock Exchange (MCX-SX) has appointed Gopal Krishna Pillai IAS (Retd.) as Chairman and Thomas Mathew T., as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. SEBI has approved these appointments already.

5. SpiceJethas appointed Sanjiv Kapoor, a former leader of the airline practice at Bain & Co and director at Temasek Holdings, to head the budget airline. His appointment as its chief operating officer came at a time when it's on the lookout for a strategic investor and ways to shore up its finances.

6. Just three weeks after he resigned from the MCX-SX board, Jignesh Shah quit the board of Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) yesterday as well. In an emotionally charged statement, the founder-chairman of Financial Technologies (FT) said the crisis at the National Spot Exchange (NSEL) had destroyed everything he had worked hard to build over the past two decades. The resignation follows the Rs 5,600-crore payment crisis at NSEL, also controlled by FT.

7. India's main stock index, the Sensex, has hit a record high due to increased inflow of foreign capital. The index reached 21,293.88 early on Friday, surpassing its previous high of 21,206 set during the stock market boom of 2008, before closing at 21,196.81.

8. Indian manufacturing output indicated moderation of business conditions for the third consecutive month as the HSBC India compiled Manufacturing Purchasing Managers- Index (PMI) stood unchanged at 49.6 in October compared to previous month September. Any reading lower than 50 indicates contraction in the sector.

9. Piramal Enterprises has acquired over-the-counter (OTC) skincare brand Caladryl in India from Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc for an undisclosed sum. This acquisition will enable Piramal Enterprises Ltd (PEL) to widen its consumer products portfolio in the skincare segment. The brand Caladryl in India was owned by Valeant Pharmaceuticals, after acquiring the rights to the brand from Johnson & Johnson in 2012. Caladryl is an anti-pruritic solution known for dermatosis application for minor skin irritations and itching.

10 Four Public Sector Enterprises including Bharat Coking Coal Limited were awarded the Turnaround Awards for 2013. The other Public Sector Enterprises, which bagged the award are National Film Development Corporation Limited, National Projects Construction Corporation Limited and SAIL Refractory Unit.

11. Bosch Ltd has appointed Guenter Weber as the Regional President for Automotive Aftermarket business effective 1st November. After successfully completing his tenure as Vice-President, Core Business Field Diesel, Automotive Aftermarket Division, Germany, Weber will now be responsible for the regional operations and will focus on driving growth for the Automotive Aftermarket division in India.

12. India won Gold in 18th Asian Archery Competition at Chinese Taipei. Abhishek Verma, Ratan Singh, Sandeep Kumar forming the compound team defeated the Korean trio of Lihong Min, Yong Hee Choi and Jongho Kim 233-231 to win the gold.

13. After putting up a great fight, India's Saurav Ghosal bowed out of the World Squash Championship at Manchester. Ghosal, who scripted history by becoming the first Indian ever to reach the world championship last-eight stage, lost to defending champion Ramy Ashour 9-11 5-11 9-11 in his 48-minute quarterfinal battle at Manchester Central late last night.

Forex Reserves increased by USD 1.828 billion to 282.950 billion

India-s Forex reserves were increased by USD 1.828 billion to 282.950 billion for the week ended 25th October as per the recent weekly data released by RBI. This increase was mainly due to increase in the reserve portion in the Foreign Currency Assets.  The Foreign Currency Assets (FCA) was increased by USD 1.807 billion to 254.503 billion for the same week. Foreign currency assets expressed in US dollar terms include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of the non-US currencies, such as the euro, pound and yen, held in the reserves.

The SDRs (Special Drawing Rights) and Reserve portion with IMF were also increased by USD 13.7 million and USD 6.9 million respectively for the same week. Gold values remained unchanged at USD 21.765 billion for the same reporting week.

1. Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili has nominated the country's interior minister as his successor. The nomination on Saturday of Irakli Garibashvili comes a week after elections that chose Ivanishvili's ally Giorgi Margvelashvili as the country's new president. Billionaire Ivanishvili, whose Georgian Dream coalition routed President Mikhail Saakashvili's party in parliamentary elections a year ago, had previously announced his intention to step down as premier after the presidential vote.

2. Bangladesh became the First South Asian Country to Approve Commercial Cultivation of Bt Brinjal. National Committee on Biosafety (NCB), the highest regulatory body for GM crops in Bangladesh, officially approved the Bt brinjal varieties. With this step, Bangladesh becomes the 29th country in the world to grow GM crop.

3. Legendary Pakistani folk singer Reshma passed away in Lahore yesterday. She was suffering from Throat cancer. She is remembered in India for her famous song "Lambi Judai of the 1983 film Hero. Some of her other famous numbers include "Dama Dam Mast Kalandar", "Hai O Rabba nahion lagda dil mera", and "Ankhiyan no rehen de ankhyan de kol kol" .

4. Recently crowned world champion for the fourth time, Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel won the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix. Vettel's team-mate Mark Webber and Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg finished second and third respectively in the same race. This victory has drawn Vettel level with compatriot Michael Schumacher's mark of seven successive wins. If Vettel wins the last two races of the season, he will equal the overall record of nine held by Alberto Ascari in the 1950s.Recently he became the youngest driver to win the title four times.

5. World Number Two Serbia's Novak Djokovic has won the Paris Masters Tennis after defeating defending champion David Ferrer of Spain in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5.

1. India is placed seventh out of 37 in a list of countries ranked in terms of expat quality of life, according to a research commissioned by HSBC Expat. Thailand tops the list which is dominated by Asian countries with mainland China, Singapore and Taiwan are ranked 3rd, 6th, and 8th places respectively. Others in the top 10 include Bahrain (2nd), Cayman Islands (4th), Australia (5th), Spain (9th) and Brazil (10th).

2. Sikkim has been named as the best region to visit in 2014 by a leading global travel guide, with Brazil emerging as the top destination in terms of countries. Sikkim was the first Indian state to frame an eco-tourism policy with the help of Japanese and American experts.

3. India won a crucial election to the UN Board of Auditors with its nominee Shashi Kant Sharma, the Comptroller and Auditor General- by 124 votes out of the total 186. Shashi Kant Sharma won 124 votes out of the total 186 cast in the General Assembly's Fifth Committee on Administrative and Budgetary questions.

4. Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) has announced the appointment of two managing directors - V.K.Sharma and Usha Sangwan. Vijay Kumar Sharma has been Managing Director & CEO, LIC Housing Finance Ltd (LIC HFL. His key areas of expertise have been Business Strategy, Business Development, Processes and Systems, Leadership Development, Branding and Product Development and Risk Mitigation and Compliance.

5. Rohit Sharma became the third cricketer in the world to score a double hundred in an ODI match after Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Shewag. He scored 209 runs off 158 balls against Australia in seventh and final ODI match at Bangalore's M.Chinnaswamy Stadium. He also created record for highest number of sixes (16) in an innings. With this India also won ODI series against Australia after a long time.

6. Virat Kohli has become the number-one ranked batsman in the latest ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen after a successful series against Australia. Virat Kohli, 24-year-old had series aggregate of 344 runs at an average of 114.66, and a reward of 38 ratings points to put him into the number-one spot for the first time in his career. Kohli has now become the third Indian batsman to hold the number-one batting rank in ODI cricket, after Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni. After scoring 209 in the recently concluded series against Australia, Rohit Sharma is now India's fifth batsman to feature inside the top 20 (with rank 15th), with the others being Kohli (first), MS Dhoni (sixth), Dhawan (11th) and Suresh Raina (19th).

7. Indian women hockey team continued their impressive show at the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament beating Malaysia 5-1 to secure their place in the final match at Kakamigahara, Japan today. India will take on hosts Japan on Thursday in their last round-robin match, which will also be a dress rehearsal ahead of Saturday's final as the hosts also sealed their place in the final of the women's event.

8. Indian men's hockey team on 3 November 2013 officially qualified for the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014. International Hockey Federation (FIH) confirmed the India-s berth in an official press release at Switzerland.

1. A Bangladeshi court has sentenced to death 152 soldiers today for their role in a 2009 mutiny. The life includes massacre of 74 people, including top army officers.  The trial is considered one of the world-s biggest ever mass criminal trials.

2. Smartphone maker BlackBerry has scrapped the sale plan today and said it would instead raise as much as USD 1.25 billion through convertible debentures. The company will also replace Chief Executive Officer Thorsten Heins, while John Chen, a director in Wells Fargo and The Walt Disney Company, will serve as interim CEO. Watsa—led Fairfax Financial, the firm that signed a tentative agreement in September to acquire BlackBerry for USD 4.7 billion, will invest USD 250 million in the convertible debentures, BlackBerry said. Blackberry also announced that it will now invest more in Software rather than hardware.

1. ISRO successfully launched its historic mission to Mars from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. With Indi-s successful launch, India-s low-cost technology that could help it join a small club of space agencies to have explored the red planet.  It was India-s first mission to the red planet. If successful, the satellite will take about 300 days to reach Mars and will search for methane in the Martian atmosphere. Only the United States, Europe, and Russia have so far successfully sent probes that have orbited or landed on Mars.

2. The Government of India has announced to extend the sale of the non-subsidized 5 kg cooking gas (LPG) cylinders at petrol pumps across the country. The proposal to extend the scope of the scheme was approved by M. Veerappa Moily, the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Earlier, the scheme was launched in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru on 5th October this year.

3. India-s services sector activity witnessed a moderate improvement in October from a four-and-a-half year low of 44.6 in September, as per the latest HSBC survey published today. The HSBC/Markit Purchasing Managers Index for the services industry increased up to 47.1 in October compared to 44.6 in September, the fourth successive monthly contraction of services sector output across India. A rating lower than 50 indicates contraction.

4. Bharti Airtel confirmed that it has entered into a definitive agreement with the Warid Group to fully acquire Warid Congo SA. The agreement is subject to regulatory and statutory approvals. The agreement marks the second in-country acquisition by Airtel in Africa. It had acquired Warid-s Uganda operations earlier this year. The latest acquisition will make Airtel the largest mobile operator in Congo Brazzaville with around 2.6 million customers.

5. Indian Weightlifting Federation Joint Secretary Abraham K Techi appointed as an international Weightlifting referee. Budapest-based International Weightlifting Federation issued the honour to Abraham, making him the fourth international referee from North East India. Abraham K Techi, President of the Arunachal Weightlifting Association (AWA), is the first international referee from Arunachal Pradesh and fourth from the North East.

India-s Core industries output jumped 8% in September

India-s core sector output, consisting of eight key sectors, jumped to 8% in September compared to 3.7% growth in the previous month of August.  The core sector growth stood at 8.3% in September last year. This is the highest growth in last six months and much better than August growth data of 3.7%.

Crude oil, steel, fertilizer, cement, refinery products and electricity output grew by 0.6%, 6.6%, 5.3%, 11.5%, 8% and 12.6% respectively in the same month. Coal production growth rate slowed to 12.5% and natural gas output dipped (-) 14.1%.

The core sector industries have grown at 3.2% cent during the April-September period of this fiscal year, 2013-14, compared to 6.6% in the same period of last financial year. The eight core industries have a weightage of about 38% in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP). This high growth of core sector industries will improve IIP number for September as well which will be published later this month.

1. Microsoft has narrowed its list of CEO candidates including India's Satya Nadella, Ford chief Alan Mulally and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop. The new CEO will succeed current CEO Steve Ballmer who has been serving as the CEO of Microsoft since January 2000.

2. The euro zone economy is expected to start growing again next year, after two years of negative growth, but unemployment will remain stubbornly high, the European Commission had predicted on Tuesday. The EU executive expects economic growth in the 17-member currency bloc to reach 1.1% in 2014 — after a 0.4% contraction this year. But unemployment is forecast to remain at its record high of 12.2% through 2014.

The outlook was slightly better for the 28-member EU, with the gross domestic product (GDP) expected to grow by 1.4% next year, while unemployment was set to fall to 11%, down from 11.1% in 2013.

1. Rabindranath Tagore, the first Indian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature will be at the centre of celebrations of the Sweden India Nobel Memorial Week in the country. The seventh edition of the week is dedicated to Rabindranath Tagore to mark the centenary of his Nobel Prize in Literature which will be organized by the Swedish Embassy.

2. Nirupama Rao, Indian envoy to the US, bid farewell to her career of diplomacy, as members of the American diplomatic corps and her counterparts from countries like China and Brazil gathered at a reception hosted in her honour by the State Department. She served as India's Foreign Secretary, External Affairs Ministry's spokesperson and envoy to important countries like China and Sri Lanka in four decades as a diplomat. US Secretary of State John Kerry sent a special message to Rao which was read on the occasion. He appreciated Rao's role in strengthening the important partnership between India and the US. She will be succeeded by S Jaishankar, currently India's Ambassador to China.

3. Charkha of Mahatma Gandhi that he used in Yerwada Jail during the Quit India Movement was auctioned in UK for £110000 at England. The charkha of Mahatma Gandhi is about eight decades old.  His last/final will was also auctioned over £20000 for historical documents and artefacts by the Mullock-s Auction house in Shropshire, England. The name of the buyer was kept secret.

4. Two young scientists National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) have won top awards for their respective research work. Senthil Kumar, a senior scientist, won the IGU Krishnan Gold Medal 2013 for his significant contributions in the emerging field planetary geology. He has shown similarities between the continental shear zones on planet Venus to that of the Earth. N. Satyavani, scientist, has been selected for the K.R. Gupta Memorial Gold medal by the Geological Society of India for 2013.

5. Jammu and Kashmir Bank has reappointed Mushtaq Ahmad as its Chairman and CEO for a period of another three years. Ahmed-s term with the private sector bank ended on October 6 this year. He has been the Chairman and CEO of the bank since October 2010. Ahmed served as an Additional Director of J&K bank from September 22, 2010 to October 2010.

6. The Government has appointed Alok Johri as Member (Mechanical) in the Railway Board. He took charge on Tuesday. Prior to this, he served as General Manager of North Central Railway (NCR) since June 2012.

7. The government's gross direct tax collections rose 11.6% to 3.37 lakh crore rupees during the April to October period of the current fiscal. The government had fixed a direct tax collection target of 6.68 lakh crore rupees for 2013-14, envisaging a growth of 19%.  Gross corporate tax collection increased 8.2% and Gross collection of personal income tax jumped by 17.9% during the same period.

8. Home, auto and consumer loans are expected to become costlier as the country's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) raised its lending rates by 20 basis points with effect from Thursday. The bank has revised the base rate or the minimum lending rate to 10% from 9.80%.

9. Assamese music director Sher Choudhury passed away today at B. Baruah Cancer Institute in Guwahati, Assam. He was 69. He had won national award for the Karbi movie "Woshobipo" in 1990. He also scored music for highly acclaimed and award winning Assamese films like Haladhar, Raag Biraag and Adajya. He also produced several documentaries for Doordarshan.

10. Famous Kannada filmmaker and screenplay writer, D. Rajendra Babu passed away of a heart attack in Bangalore on Sunday. He was 62. He had directed over 50 films in a career spanning three decades. He had given numerous blockbusters and most of them were remakes. He was popularly known as -remake specialist- as many of his blockbusters were remakes.

11. Tarla Dalal, noted food writer, chef, best-selling cookbook author and host of multiple cooking shows, passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday morning. She was 77.

1. Bill de Blasio was elected New York City's first Democratic mayor in two decades on Tuesday. This ended billionaire Michael Bloomberg's record 12 years tenure as New York Mayor. Bill will be New York-s first Democratic mayor.

2. Central Election Commission (CEC) of Tajikistan declared yesterday that Imomali Rakhmon was re-elected as the President of Tajikistan. He is from People's Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT) and has been re-elected for term of 7 years as per rule. A constitutional amendment passed in 2003 allows President Imomali Rakhmon to run for a third term which will help him to hold office until 2020.

3. Scientists discovered a black hole in a collection of stars in the constellation Ophiuchus, which is about 22000 light years from Earth. The globular cluster in which black hole was spotted is known as M62.

4. Russia launched the Olympic torch into space today, as part of the flame-s journey ahead of the Sochi Winter Olympics. The Sochi Winter Olympics are due to begin on February 7 next year. The torch will be delivered to the International Space Station (ISS) where two astronauts are due to take the torch on a spacewalk for the first time in Olympic history.

5. Shares in the micro-blogging site Twitter opened at USD 45.10 each in the first minutes of trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). That is a 73% jump from the initial asking price of $26 a share, and it means the company is now valued at a little over USD 31 billion. It is the biggest technology listing since Facebook in 2012.

6. The European Central Bank (ECB) has cut its benchmark interest rate by 25 bps to a record low of 0.25% from 0.5%. ECB president Mario Draghi supported the decision considering low inflation and weak economic data across the euro zone. Inflation in the eurozone dropped to 0.7% in October - its lowest level since January 2010, giving room for rate cut.

7. The US economy grew at an annual pace of 2.8% in the third quarter (July to September) of the current year. The growth rate was faster than expected, and was better than 2.5% growth witnessed in the previous quarter. The pace of growth in consumer spending, which accounts for about two-thirds of US economic activity, dropped in the third quarter from the previous quarter. Consumer spending grew at annual pace of 1.5%, down from 1.7% in the previous quarter which is still a concern for the world-s largest economy.

1. India-US naval exercise named -Malabar 2013- is underway in the Bay of Bengal. It is the latest in a continuing series of exercises conducted to advance multinational maritime relationships and mutual security issues. The exercise features both ashore and at-sea training. While ashore training includes subject matter expert and professional exchanges, at-sea portions are conducted in the Bay of Bengal.

2. India and China started a 10 day joint training exercise 'Hand in Hand-, aimed at enhancing counter terrorism skills in Miao ergang, China.

3. Indian Navy inducted the fourth generation advanced jet trainer aircraft Hawk 132 at a ceremony held at the Naval Air Station INS Dega at Visakhapatnam. Hawk 132 is an aircraft operating in over 24 countries around the world. The aircraft was built by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) with Transfer of Technology from M/s British Aerospace, UK.

4. The government of India has appointed Prem Narain as the Secretary of Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry in place of Rajiv Mehrishi, who is now new Fertilisers Secretary. Rajiv Mehrishi was shifted from the Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry to the Department of Fertilisers as Secretary to replace Sudhir Mital who retires this month end.

5. Global rating agency Standard & Poor-s has warned of lowering the country-s sovereign rating to -speculative- grade post general elections next year if the new government fails to arrest the falling growth. Currently, the rating is -BBB (-)- which was affirmed today but with negative outlook. The current BBB- rating is the last investment grade. It also informed that it is expected to review the rating after the elections when the new government will announce its policy agenda.

6. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed the Wholly Owned Subsidiaries (WOS) of the foreign banks to acquire the domestic private sector banks. RBI also permitted the banks to set up branches anywhere in the country. The foreign bank subsidiaries have also been allowed to list on the local stock exchanges. Although, they will not be allowed to hold more than 74% in the private banks they may acquire. Post this, Foreign banks will now be allowed to set up "wholly owned subsidiaries" in India, which will enable them to open branches anywhere in the country. The subsidiaries will need a minimum capital of Rs 500 crore. The RBI also said that the subsidiaries will be required to meet Basel-III requirements (9 per cent Tier-I capital) right from Day One. For the first three years, they will have to maintain Tier-I capital at 10 per cent.

7. Mumbai emerged as the city with highest internet penetration in India, as per the data released by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). Bangalore which is considered as the silicon valley of the country was the sixth in the list of internet penetration with 3.8 million internet users. Mumbai has 12 million internet users, followed by Delhi with 8.1 million users and Hyderabad with 4.7 million users. Kolkata emerged as the city with highest growth of internet users in 2013.

8. Search-engine giant Google celebrated  Indian genius and Nobel laureate Sir C.V. Raman-s birthday today with a doodle. Today's doodle celebrates the 125th birth anniversary of the scientist with an illustration of the Raman Effect. While Raman-s face is featured behind Google-s G, the two Os that follow demonstrate the Raman Effect, a discovery that saw him win a Nobel Prize in 1930. 11. Tamilnadu Chief Minister Ms.Jayalalithaa inaugurated the 53rd World Fide Championship at Chennai today. The Chief Minister remarked that chess which is a game to improve focussing, planning, thinking ahead in abstract terms and juggling has caught the attention of the younger generation as it was evident that India now had 27 grandmasters and 76 international masters in the game of chess.

12. Minister for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari has announced the launch of the 44th International Film Festival of India to be held in Goa later this month. 13. Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan will deliver this year's Penguin Lecture, which has featured some of the world's most respected leaders, thinkers and writers over the years. 1. Super Typhoon Haiyan, the most powerful storm in the world this year, hit the Philippines yesterday, as millions of people huddled indoors and business in vulnerable areas shut down. Haiyan smashed into the central island, the island of Samar, about 600 kilometres southeast of Manila, at 4:40 a.m and was travelling quickly northwest. More than 100 people were killed and nearly 800,000 displaced, as per Red Cross. The category 5 super-typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest ever registered, has caused havoc in 36 provinces of the Philippines after making landfall yesterday.

2. U.S. automatically lost voting rights at UNESCO, after missing a crucial deadline to repay its debt to the world-s cultural agency. The U.S. hasn-t paid its dues to the Paris-based U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in protest over the decision by world governments to make Palestine a UNESCO member in 2011. Israel suspended its dues at the same time.

3. Jordan will replace Saudi Arabia on the Security Council for a two-year term starting in January after the Saudis' unprecedented rejection of the seat hours after they were elected. Earlier this week, Jordan dropped its bid for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council, leaving Saudi Arabia a clear path in the now uncontested election next Tuesday.

4. The US economy added 204,000 jobs in October, an unexpected burst of hiring during a month in which the federal government was partially shut down for 16 days. At the same time, the unemployment rate rose to 7.3% in October from 7.2% in September, likely because furloughed federal workers were counted as unemployed. The report noted that the shutdown did not affect total jobs. This data raises optimism about economic health and progress of the world-s largest economy.

5. China-s exports jumped 5.6% year-on-year in October, increasing optimism about Chinese economy ahead of a weekend policy meeting to reform the world-s second-largest economy. October exports were valued at 1.14 trillion yuan (USD 185.4 billion), while imports stood at 0.95 trillion yuan, up 7.6% year-on-year. China-s exports for the first 10 months of the year rose 7.8% and imports climbed by 7.3%.

6. Standard & Poor's lowered its long-term foreign and local currency sovereign credit ratings on the Republic of France on Friday by one notch to 'AA' from earlier rating 'AA+'. S&P also revised France's sovereign credit outlook up to stable from negative. High unemployment is weakening support for further significant fiscal and structural policy measures are the main reasons behind this credit rating downgrade.

1. The Election Commission has banned the publication and dissemination of exit polls of any kind in the five poll bound states from 11th November to 4th December. The Commission sent the orders to Chief Electoral Officers of the poll-bound states of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Delhi. Channels are also prohibited from telecasting interviews of voters after they cast their votes. The Commission has also banned the publication of results of any opinion polls 48 hours before polling in a state.

2. India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Agni-I ballistic missile with a strike range of 700 km from a test range off Odisha coast as part of a user trial by the Army.

3. The Vice President of India, M. Hamid Ansari released a book entitled India-s Nuclear Energy Programme: Future Plans, Prospects and Concerns at a function organized by Indian National Science Academy (INSA). The book is edited by Prof. R. Rajaraman.

4. International Monetary Fund (IMF) economist Siddharth Tiwari is likely to succeed Raghuram Rajan as the next Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance. Tiwari is the director of strategy, policy, and review at the multilateral institution and has got vast experience in Asia-Pacific, as well as Africa and Europe.

5. Bank of Maharashtra has appointed Sushil Muhnot as its new Chairman and Managing Director. Before that he was Chairman of Small Industries Development Bank of India since April 2012. Muhnot will assume charge as CMD of Bank of Maharashtra in Mumbai today.

6. Parvinder Sohi Behuria, a Senior IRS officer was appointed as the Secretary General of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) yesterday. She is the successor of Ashok Sahu who retired recently. She is a 1977 batch IRS (Income Tax) officer. At present, she is the Member (Revenue) in Central Board of Direct Taxes under the Department of Revenue.

7. The Reserve Bank of India has allowed third-party payment for export and import transactions as easing procedures. The RBI said that with a view to further liberalise the procedure relating to payments for exports/imports, banks are allowed payments for export of goods/software to be received from a third-party.  It added, banks are also permitted to make payments to a third-party for import of goods.

8. Martha Dodray, a health worker from Bihar won the global UN Award for her commitment and dedication to eradicate Polio in India. United Nation has conferred the -UN Frontline Workers Global Leadership Award- to Martha Dodray. The award was given in recognition of the roles to individuals, organizations, and corporations played in supporting the work of the United Nations- to advance global peace, justice, and prosperity.

9. More than a year after it made an offer to buy Orient-Express Hotels, Tata Group-s hospitality company Indian Hotels Co (IHCL) withdrew its USD 1.86-billion bid for the London-based group amid concerns about the worsening global hospitality slump. The Orient-Express boards continuous refusal to entertain the offer from the Tatas, the current economic environment as well as the Indian chains changed priorities triggered the withdrawal.

10. Global ratings agency Moody-s Investors Service affirmed the ratings of three large private banks, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank, but warned that they expect these banks to experience marginal weakness in their corporate exposures due to the ongoing slowdown in the economy. The rating agency affirmed its ratings for the senior unsecured debt and local currency deposits of these three private sector banks at Baa2 with a -stable- outlook.

11. ICICI Bank MD and CEO Chanda Kochhar has been named as the most powerful businesswoman in India for the third consecutive year by Fortune Magazine. Shikha Sharma of Axis Bank and Aruna Jayanthi of Capgemini India have taken the second and third place in the Fortune list of 50 most powerful businesswomen ranking for 2013. Preetha Reddy, Managing Director of Apollo Hospital Enterprises, and Mallika Srinivasan, CEO of Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE), have placed at fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

12. India was selected by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to host the Men-s World Cup of Hockey in 2018. The finals will be played in December 2018. Also, England will host the Women-s World Cup of hockey from in July, 2018. Hockey's World Cup is held every four years. India hosted the world cup in 2010 at New Delhi. The 2014 edition of Hockey World Cup would be played in The Hague, Netherlands.

13. Indian women's hockey team won silver in Asian Champions Trophy tournament at Kakamigahara, Japan today. The team lost to hosts Japan by a solitary goal in the summit clash of the event.



Forex Reserves decreased by USD 1.657 billion to 281.293 billion

India-s Forex reserves were decreased by USD 1.657 billion to 281.293 billion for the week ended 1st November as per the recent weekly data released by RBI. Forex reserves were decreased after four weeks of continuous increase.

This decrease was mainly due to decrease in the reserve portion in the Foreign Currency Assets.  The Foreign Currency Assets (FCA) was decreased by USD 894.2 million to 253.609 billion for the same week. The SDRs (Special Drawing Rights) and Reserve portion with IMF were also decreased by USD 46.9 million and USD 177.9 million respectively for the same week. Gold values were also decreased by USD 538.1 to USD 21.227 billion for the same reporting week.



India-s FDI dropped by 38% in August to USD 1.4 billion, lowest in last 8 months

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India dropped to 8-month low of USD 1.4 billion in August, down 38% compared to same month last year. FDI inflow stood at USD 2.2.6 billion in August last year. During the April-August period of 2013-14 fiscal, cumulative FDI increased by just 4% to USD 8.46 billion, compared to USD 8.16 billion in the first five months of 2012-13.

The sectors that helped in registering the hike during the five months include services (USD 1.19 billion), Pharma (USD 1.07 billion), automobile (USD 661 million) and construction (USD 592 million). The maximum FDI during the period came from Singapore (USD 2.37 billion), followed by Mauritius (USD 2.13 billion), the Netherlands (USD 980 million), Germany (USD 529 million), and the US (USD 475 million).

The government has also started exercise in allowing FDI in railways sector besides liberalising FDI norms for construction and housing sector. It has already relaxed FDI policy in 12 sectors, including telecom, tea and petroleum & natural gas. The aim is to boost FDI inflows in order to reduce current account deficit and support domestic currency.

India-s Exports jumped by 13.47% in October; Trade deficit at USD 10.55 billion

India's exports continue on the growth track for the fourth straight month as its overall exports jumped by 13.47% in October compared to same month last year to USD 27.27 billion due increased demand from USA and European Union. At the same time, overall imports dropped by 14.5% to USD 37.82 billion in the same month due to steep fall in Gold imports. Trade deficit stood at USD 10.55 billion in October compared to USD 20.21 billion trade deficit posted same month last year.

Gold and silver imports fell by 79.9% during the month to USD 1.37 billion compared to USD 6.85 billion in October 2012 mostly due to an increase in import duties and other restrictions put in place by the Government in order to curb current account deficit and trade deficit.  This is a good news for Government which has been struggling to reduce current account deficit.

Exports during April-October period registered a growth of 6.32% to USD 179.37 billion while Imports dropped by 3.8% to USD 270 billion during the same period compared to last year. Trade deficit in April-October 2013 stood at USD 90.68 billion which was much lower than USD 112 billion posted in the same period of 2012.

1. Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have signed a roadmap agreement today to allow inspectors broader access to nuclear sites. The IAEA however would not be allowed to inspect the Parchin military site near Tehran, where the West suspects Iran carried out tests linked to nuclear weapons, a source close to the talks said. The agreement came a day after Iran and six world powers failed at nuclear talks in Geneva at the weekend to reach a deal on curbing Tehran-s controversial uranium enrichment in exchange for easing economic sanctions.

2. Election Commission of Bangladesh has cancelled registration of the largest Islamic party of Bangladesh, Jamaat-e-Islami. This cancellation came after the High Court had declared the registration of Jammat, illegal on the grounds that some of the provisions in its Charter ran counter to the country's Constitution and the Representation of People Order in August this year.

3. The memoir written by Teen Pakistani activist Malala Yousufzai, -I am Malala-, was banned from all private schools in Pakistan as she represented the West and not her native country, said the head of schools' association. Malala's book was published in October this year and it recounts Malala's tale of her being shot at by Taliban, her life in Swat under Taliban and her new life in Britain where she now lives and studies.

4. Gabriela Isler from Venezuela won Miss Universe 2013 contest on 9 November 2013 held at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia. Patricia Yurena Rodriguez from Spain finished as the first runner-up, and Constanza Baez from Ecuador was the second runner up. Manasi Moghe from India had been shortlisted for the top 10 finalists of Miss Universe 2013 but failed to make in the final three. She, a TV presenter by prefession, is the third Miss Universe from Venezuela in 6 years.

5. UK-s drug company Shire has agreed to acquire US's ViroPharma - a rare disease biopharmaceutical firm - for about USD 4.2 billion. The US firm makes drug Cinryze for the treatment of Hereditary Angioedema (HAE), a genetic immune disorder. The acquisition of ViroPharma will immediately benefit Shire and is entirely consistent with our clear strategic objective of strengthening our rare disease portfolio.

6. Pakistan won the Asian Champions Trophy in Men-s category followed by Japan and Malaysia while Japan won the Asian Champions Trophy in Women-s category followed by India and Malaysia at the recently held 3rd Asian Champions Trophy in Japan.

7. Nigeria won FIFA Under-17 Football World Cup after defeating defending champions Mexico by 3-0 in the final match in UAE. This is the record fourth time Nigeria U17 team won the FIFA Under-17 Football World Cup, after their previous successes in China 1985, Japan 1993 and South Korea 2007.

The 19th Kolkata International Film Festival was inaugurated yesterday with the screening of Rituparna Ghosh's Taak JhaankThe festival was inaugurated by legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan along with West Bengal Chief Minister Manata Banerjee, actors Shah Rukh Khan and Kamal Haasan. The 19th Kolkata International Film Festival is an 8-day film festival during which 189 films from 63 countries will be screened. The focus of this year-s festival is on South-East Asian films.

3. Regional Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2013 was launched in Sydney, Australia today. It was officially launched in Sydney, Australia by New South Wales, Premier Barry O'Farrell and Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi. The convention's objective is to link the vast Indian diaspora and other parts of the Asia-Pacific region with India.

4. The V.C. Padmanabhan Memorial Award 2013 for Ecology and Environment Conservation was presented to eminent ecologist and environmental scientist Madhav Gadgil in Thrissur. The award carries a cash prize of Rs1 lakh, a bronze plaque and a citation.

5. Noted Rajasthani writer Vijaydan Detha passed away yesterday at Borunda in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan. He was 87. Popularlly known as Bijji, Vijaydan Detha wrote more than 800 short stories. He was a recipient of Padma Shri and Sahitya Akademi Award.

6. Woman shooter Heena Sidhu created history yesterday by becoming the first pistol exponent from India to win a gold medal at the ISSF World Cup finals in Munich, Germany. She won the gold medal yesterday by beating double Olympic Champion Guo Wenjun from China, world champion Arunovic Zorana from Serbia and multiple Olympic medallist Olena Kostevych of Ukraine in a stiff competition.

7. Indian men's hockey team finished fifth at the 3rd Asian Champions Trophy held in Japan. In a fifth-sixth place match, India defeated Oman by 6-1 to secure fifth place.

8. R. Ashwin tops ICC test cricket All-rounders' rankings as per the latest ranking published yesterday. He scored 124, his second Test century, and took 5 wickets in second innings against West Indies to help India complete an innings and 51-run victory over West Indies. This performance helped him to jump to No 1 place in the ranking. Ashwin is followed by Bangladesh-s Shakib Al Hassan and South Africa-s Jacques Kallis in the same ranking. South Africa-s A.B.Devilliers and Dale Steyn lead the ranking list among the batsmen and the bowlers respectively.

1. Punjab Government has announced -Bhagat Puran Singh Sehat Beema Yojna- (BPSSBY), a cashless health care scheme for BPL families in Punjab. The scheme was launched by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal would provide free medical services of up to Rs 30,000 per annum to a five-member Below Poverty Line (BPL) family for hospitalizations.

2. Senior IPS officer Subhas Goswami took charge as new Director General of paramilitary Indo—Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) today which guards the sensitive frontier with China. He is the 30th chief of the border guarding force which was raised in the face of the 1962 Chinese aggression. He took charge from officiating Additional DG of the force Mahboob Alam.

3. The Centre has appointed Usha Ananthasubramanian as the first Chairman and Managing Director of the Bharatiya Mahila Bank, the country-s first all-woman bank. She is currently an executive director at Punjab National Bank. Bharatiya Mahila Bank is expected to be formally launched at Mumbai on November 19, which is also birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

4. Ratan P Watal, a senior IAS officer was appointed as the Secretary of Department of Expenditure in the Union Ministry of Finance. Currently he is serving as the Secretary in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and he will succeed RS Gujral who will retire from the post later this month.

5. T.P. Seetharam, currently India's High Commissioner to Mauritius, has been appointed as the next ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. He is an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of 1980 batch.

Chetna Vijay Sinha, Director, Mann Deshi Mahila Bank and Mann Deshi Foundation, bagged the 2013 India Social Entrepreneur of the Year award by The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, a sister organisation of the World Economic Forum, in partnership with Jubilant Bhartia Foundation. He was selected from over 200 participants.

7. India-s domestic passenger car salesdropped by 3.88% to 1,63,199 units in October this year compared to 1,69,788 units in the same month last year, as per the data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers(SIAM). At the same time, motorcycle sales in last month grew by 18.05% to 11,05,103 units from 9,36,122 in the same month last year and Total commercial vehicles sales dropped by 19.77% to 53,533 units. As per SIAM, overall vehicle and passenger car sales growth will be negative for the current financial year.

8. India with 20 gold 20 silver and 12 bronze medals has topped the medals tally position in the 2nd Junior SAF Games that concluded today in Ranchi. Sri Lanka with 10 gold, 10 silver and 14 bronze medals have secured 2nd position while Bangladesh with 3 bronze has come at the third position. Pakistan with one bronze is at the fourth position.

India-s retail inflation jumped to 10.09% in October due to higher food inflation

India-s Retail inflation, measured by Consumer Price Index, jumped to 9.84% in September compared to 9.84% in previous month of August due to increase in food inflation. Food inflation jumped to 12.56% in the same month. Vegetables and fruits prices were increased by 45.67% and 12.84% respectively in the same month.

In October, Retail inflation in rural areas jumped to 10.11% compared to 9.71% in September and in urban areas jumped to 10.2% compared to 9.93% in September. Double digit retail inflation may prompt RBI to hike rates again in order to fight with rising inflation.

India-s IIP growth increased to 2% in September

India-s Index of Industrial production (IIP) growth, the most important parameter to judge factory output, stood at 2% in September compared to 0.6% in August. IIP was contracted by 0.7% in the same month last year. Industrial output for April-September period of current financial year stood at 0.4% compared to 0.1% in the same period of last financial year.

Power generation and mining productions were increased by 12.9% and 3.3% respectively while capital goods production was declined by 6.8% in September.  The manufacturing sector, which constitutes over 75 per cent of the index, grew by a just 0. 6% in September compared to decline of 1.6% in the same month last year. IIP data confirms that India-s industrial sector is still struggling to regain growth and this is a big concern for Indian economy now.

Coffee giant Starbucks has to pay nearly USD 2.76 billion to a division of Kraft Foods Inc after an arbitrator ruled that it had broken a long-term distribution agreement. The arbitrator ruled that Starbucks was not justified in ending its distribution deal with Kraft four years early, after saying the distributor was not doing enough to push its coffee in supermarkets. The deal was first signed in 1998, and renewed for a 10-year period in 2004.

In spite of demand of political parties in Tamil Nadu for complete boycott, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid reached Sri Lanka today on a five-day visit to represent India at the CHOGM Summit. He justified India-s decision to participate in the CHOGM Summit, saying it has to remain engaged with Sri Lanka on various issues including those related to ethnic Tamils. He also said it was in national interest that the Government has decided to participate in the CHOGM Summit in Sri Lanka.

2. Retired bureaucrat Krishna Mohan Sahni (1969 batch IAS officer) was appointed Chairman of the National Multi-Commodity Exchange of India Ltd (NMCE) on 12 November 2013. His appointment was approved by the Forward Markets Commission, the commission which is responsible for regulating the commodities markets in India.

3. Justice R. Banumathi, Judge of the Madras High Court was on 12 November 2013 appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. She was appointed by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee.

4. The Reserve Bank has said the current account deficit in current financial year 2013-14 will be around USD 56 billion which is much lower than projected earlier and there is no fundamental reason for rupee depreciation. The current account deficit (CAD), which is the difference between outflow and inflow of foreign exchange, touched an all-time high of USD 88.2 billion or 4.8% of the GDP in previous financial year 2012-13.

5. MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited) signed a MoU with Los Alamos Technical Associates, Inc. (LATA) of USA yesterday. 3. The economy of the euro zone grew by just 0.1% in the July-to-September period, compared to 0.3%  growth in the previous quarter. The weak growth level is the main reason behind the recent rate cut of 25 bps by the European Central Bank. Euro zone-s two biggest economies, France-s economy was contracted by 0.1% while Germany-s economy grew by 0.3% in the same quarter.

3. The Chairman of Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), Yogesh Agarwal resigned from the post of Chairman yesterday. Anup Wadhawan was appointed as the new Chairman of PFRDA by the Finance Ministry.

4. Director of Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX), Paras Ajmera resigned from the board yesterday. He is a nominee of promoter Financial Technologies India Ltd (FTIL) to the board of directors of Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd (MCX).

5. Micro-blogging Website Twitter has appointed Parminder Singh as the Managing Director of Asia, North Africa and India. Singh has worked at Google as Managing Director of display solution sales for Asia Pacific region for five years. He is the third person to join Twitter from Google over the last one year after Rishi Jaitly and Shailesh Rao, both hired in November last year.

India-s headline inflation jumped to 7 % in October; Food inflation stood at 18.19%

India-s headline inflation, measured by the wholesale price index (WPI) jumped to 7% in October compared to 6.46% in previous month of September due to high prices of onions and vegetables.

The food inflation stood at 18.19% in October due to steep price increase of vegetables and onions compared to same period last year. Fuel and power inflation for October rose to 10.33% compared to 10.08% in September and the manufactured products inflation jumped to 2.50% in October from 2.03% in September. The primary articles inflation stood at 14.68% compared to 13.54% in September.

Retail inflation also touched double digit level in October. With this continuously rising inflation, RBI may hike interest rates again in order to fight with inflation.

1. Maldives President Mohamed Waheed stepped down as President as the country prepared to hold the second round of the Presidential election today. The second round of the Presidential election will take place on Saturday with the Maldives Democratic Party candidate and former President Mohamed Nasheed being the key candidates.

2. The US trade deficit widened more than expected in September as imports jumped to their highest level in almost a year. The trade gap increased 8% to USD 41.8 billion, the largest since May. Also the job market is showing continuous improvement with jobless benefits dropped in the last week.

3. Inflation across the euro zone dropped to 0.7% in October which is the lowest inflation level in last four years, as per the data published by the European Union. The 12-month rate of consumer price increases was dropped from 1.1% in previous month of September.

2. The long-delayed and much awaited USD 2.3 billion aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya will be inducted into the Indian Navy here tomorrow, enhancing India-s maritime capabilities. Defence Minister A.K Antony, who travelled to Russia today, will be inducting the aircraft carrier into the force in the presence of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin and Senior Government and naval officials of the two countries. The aircraft carrier will be inducted in the Indian Navy at the Sevmash Shipyard, Russia-s nuclear submarine building centre.

The 44,500 tonne warship with a length of 284 metres will have MiG-29K naval combat aircraft along with Kamov 31 and Kamov 28 anti-submarine warfare and maritime surveillance helicopters.

3. India-s 1st ever mountain biking race will be held on Nov 17. Cycling enthusiasts of the country will get to witness their own version of -Tour the Himalayas- with India-s first-ever mountain biking race. Being organised jointly by the Mountain Track Biking Association (MTBA) of Uttarakhand, Cycling Federation of India (CFI) and Artsmith Concepts and Visions with support from the state government and the Indian Army, the event will have races in three categories for the elite riders (20kms), the amateurs (15kms) and the teens (10kms).

Over 100 top riders of the country have agreed to participate in the event to be held on a scenic track in the Himalayan foothills. The tournament offers a total prize purse of Rs 2.5 lakh (in the professional category) with the top 10 cyclists getting a share of the prize money.

4. Gold demand in India was dropped by 32% to 148.2 tonnes in July-September period of 2013 due to supply constraints, Government steps to increase import duty and high inflation, as per global body WGC. Demand in the fourth quarter of this year is expected to be lower than 262 tonnes in the same period of the last year. At the same time China with an estimated demand of 1,000 tonnes may topple India as the world's top gold consumer.

5. India-s largest bank State Bank of India plans to raise tier-II capital in the range of about Rs 5,000 crore before March. It should be in the range of about Rs 5,000 crore. There is no time frame but definitely before March,- said SBI chief, Arundhati Bhattacharya. Also, the Government has also promised to infuse Rs 2,000 crore through a preferential allotment of shares.

6. Shiraz Naval Minwalla, Professor of Physics in TIFR, Mumbai selected for the 2014 New Horizons in Physics Prize earlier this month. He was awarded "for his pioneering contributions to the study of string theory and quantum field theory; and in particular his work on the connection between the equations of fluid dynamics and Albert Einstein-s equations of general relativity". The New Horizons for Physics Prize awarded to promising junior researchers by Fundamental Physics Prize Foundation. The award carries prize money of 100000 US Dollars.

7. Professor Mushirul Hasan, the former Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia was conferred with the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship by the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund yesterday. The title of the Hasan-s fellowship project is Roads to Freedom - Prison, Prisoners and the Raj.

8. Siddhartha Birla, founder and Chairman of Xpro India Ltd, and Chairman Digjam Ltd, will be the next President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Birla will head the chamber in 2014 and he will take charge from Naina Lal Kidwai, the present President.

9. Max Bupa Health Insurance has entered into a bancassurance tie-up with Deutsche Bank. With this alliance, Max Bupa will offer its comprehensive health insurance plans to Deutsche Bank customers. This tie-up follows the insurance regulator IRDA-s guidelines allowing banks to act as corporate agents of one standalone health insurance company in addition to their existing one life and one non-life insurance companies.

10. Veteran journalist R.K. Mukker passed away on 13 November after prolonged illness. He was 88. He started off with The National Herald in Lucknow and also worked with the Indian Express and The Statesman.

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid is represented the India in the 22nd Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

4. Chinese Government has announced some drastic economic reforms steps yesterday in order to boost economic growth. China plans to loosen its -one child- family planning policy, a move that would allow more couples to have two children, the ruling Communist Party announced. It will gradually reduce the number of crimes subject to death penalty and set up a new state security committee.

The party also promised to abolish its controversial -re-education through labour- camps, which were used to detain people without trial for up to four years. Many dissidents, legal activists and other opponents of party officials were detained alongside petty criminals in the camps.

Among the major economic measures are plans to: allow private banks; allow markets to set energy pricing; and encourage private capital in many sectors. The party plans to open up the banking sector wider, on condition of strengthened regulation, by allowing qualified private capital to set up small and medium-sized banks.

5. Magnus Carlsen beat five times world chess champion Vishwanathan Anand in the sixth round in the sixth game today. Though Anand had the advantage of making the first move in game, Carlsen's briliant moves challenged Anand and he accepted his defeat in the 67th move. Now Carlsen has scored four points against Anand's two points in the six games. Six more matches are remaining in a round in the total twelve games. The first player to reach 6.5 points will win 14 Crore rupees prize money.

Iconic batsman Sachin Tendulkar and Scientist CN Rao will be honoured with Bharat Ratna Award, India-s highest civilian award. Sachin will be the first sportsperson to win Bharat Ratna. In a befitting tribute to a stellar career, especially on the day he was given a tearful farewell, Prime Minister's Office (PMO) announced the country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, for Sachin Tendulkar today. Prof Rao is an eminent scientist and a well recognised international authority on solid state and materials chemistry. He has published over 1,400 research papers and 45 books.

3. Global adulation continued to pour in for Sachin Tendulkar, as after being named Person of the Moment, Time magazine has now conferred the retiring batting legend with the -Person of the Week- honour. Tendulkar, who made an impressive 74 runs in his 200th and last Test, had previously been named -Person of the Moment- by Time. The US magazine had asked readers to vote online in a poll for -Person of the Week- for the week of November 10 and the 40-year-old got 54 votes, 88 per cent votes, way ahead of Yellen who got 13.41 per cent votes and Jinping with 6.1 per cent votes.

4.  National Press day is observed today (16th November) across the country. The day is symbolic of a free and responsible press in India. This is the day on which the Press Council of India started functioning as a moral watchdog to ensure that not only did the press maintain the high standards expected from this powerful medium but also that it was not fettered by the influence or threats of any extraneous factors.

5. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) today performed the last of the five orbit-raising manoeuvre on its Mars Orbiter in the early hours, raising the apogee (farthest point from Earth) of the spacecraft to over 1.92 lakh km. After the successful completion of these operations, the Mars Orbiter mission is expected to take on the -crucial event- of the trans—Mars injection around 12.42 AM on December 1. It will reach the orbit of the red planet by September 24, 2014 after taking on a voyage of over 10 months.

6. Emergency response service provider GVK Emergency Management Research Institute (EMRI) has bagged the SKOCH award in the health category. It was conferred the platinum award for corporate excellence and outstanding contribution to the cause of nation-building at the 34th SKOCH Summit in New Delhi. Chidambaram and Montek Singh Ahluwalia appreciated the services provided by GVK EMRI in 14 States and 2 Union Territories, catering to over 700 million people. It operates with over 6,000 ambulances and over 25,000 staff.

7. Lord Swraj Paul, a leading NRI industrialist and educationist was presented with the International Indian of the Decade award yesterday. Swraj Paul was presented the award for his outstanding achievements in the fields of industry, education and philanthropy. Lord Swraj Paul is the founder of the UK-based steel and engineering multinational company Caparo.

8. Ram Kripalu Tripathi, popularly known as Jagadguru Kripaluji Maharaj passed away yesterday in New Delhi. He was 91 years old. He was given the title of Jagadguru (the world teacher) at the age of 34 years, in 1957.

India jumped one place to second on the Reliance ICC Test Team Rankings table after winning the two-Test series against the West Indies 2-0 in Mumbai today. This sets up an interesting two-Test series between number-one ranked South Africa and India to be played next month in Johannesburg and Durban.

9. Host West Bengal topped the medals tally of the 23rd All India G V Mavalankar Shooting Championship which concluded at the Chandmari Range, at Asansol in West Bengal today. It is for the first time that Bengal has topped the medal table of national level shooting championship. Shooters from Bengal won five gold, five silver and a bronze at the 10-day long championships. Maharashtra was second with four gold, five silver and three bronze medals while Chandigarh grabbed three gold, one silver and one bronze medal, finishing third on the chart.

Forex Reserves increased by USD 819.5 million to 282.113 billion

India-s Forex reserves were increased by USD 819.5 million to 282.113 billion for the week ended 8th November as per the recent weekly data released by RBI. This increase was mainly due to increase in the reserve portion in the Foreign Currency Assets.  The Foreign Currency Assets (FCA) was increased by USD 829.7 million to 254.438 billion for the same week. Foreign currency assets expressed in US dollar terms include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of the non-US currencies, such as the euro, pound and yen, held in the reserves.

However the SDRs (Special Drawing Rights) and Reserve portion with IMF were decreased by USD 7 million and USD 3.2 million respectively for the same week. Gold values remained unchanged at USD 21.227 billion for the same reporting week.

1. Abdulla Yameen has been sworn in as the 6th President of the Maldives yesterday. The Chief Justice of Maldives, Ahmad Faiz administered the oath of office to Abdulla Yameen. Mohammad Jameel was sworn in as vice-President at the same ceremony. Earlier Yameen secured 51.39% of votes to win Presidential election.

2. British Nobel Prize-winning author Doris Lessing was died on 17 November 2013 at London. She was 94 years old. She was best known for her books -The Golden Notebook-, -Memoirs of a Survivor- and -The Summer Before the Dark-. In 2007, the 88-year-old Doris Lessing became the oldest recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature and only the 11th woman to win the award.

3. German carmaker Volkswagen is the world-s top private-sector investor in research and development (R&D), followed by South Korean electronics giant Samsung, according to EU data released today. Volkswagen topped the list with 9.5 billion euros (USD 12.8 billion) of R&D investments in 2012, while Samsung stood at 8.3 billion euros.

4. The world-s largest cancer database containing 1.7 billion experimental results has been launched, with an aim to discover future treatments for the deadly disease. The system, called -CanSAR-, is the biggest disease database of its kind anywhere in the world and condenses more data than would be generated by one million years of use of the Hubble space telescope. It contains more than eight million experimentally derived measurements, nearly one million biologically active chemical compounds and data from over a thousand cancer cell lines.

5. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel won the US Grand prix held on Sunday and with this win he set a new record for eight consecutive wins in a single season and broke the earlier record held by Michael Schumacher and Alberto Ascari. Lotus's Romain Grosjean stood second and Red Bull's Mark Webber stood third in the same race. This was also vettel-s 12th win of the season and if he wins the year-ender in Brazil than he will tie with Michael Schumacher Formulae one record of 13 victories in a single season.

6. The Jamaican sprinters, Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce were crowned the male and female World Athletes of the Year 2013. They were selected as the world athletes of the year by the sport's governing IAAF at a ceremony in Monaco. Bolt won Gold in the 100 metres, 200 and 4x100 relay at the Moscow worlds in August to take his all-time tally to eight golds and two silvers at the championships. Fraser-Pryce claimed gold medals in the same three events in Moscow, having previously won two golds and two silvers, and is also the Olympic sprint champion.

7. The Czech Republic defended the Davis Cup title 2013 after Redek Stepanek defeated the Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 in the fifth rubber of the final by BNP Paribas Final in Belgrade yesterday.

8. Malta was on Sunday unanimously chosen as the host of the next Commonwealth summit in 2015 after Mauritius pulled out in protest against the decision to hold this year's Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka despite international protests over alleged rights violations and war crimes. This is the second time Malta will host the Commonwealth summit after 2005.

2. The Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop, has announced that Australia will support India's full membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). NSG is a multinational body concerned with reducing nuclear proliferation by controlling the export and re-transfer of materials that may be applicable to nuclear weapon development and by improving safeguards and protection on existing materials.

3. Nirupama Rao, the former Indian Ambassador to the US, has been named as the -Meera and Vikram Gandhi Fellow- with the Brown-India initiative at the Watson Institute for International Studies.

4. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the first branch of Bharatiya Mahila Bank today in the iconic Air India building at Nariman Point in Mumbai with an area of 5,000 sq ft space on the ground floor. The bank, which is the first bank started in the public sector space by an Act of Parliament (other banks in public sector were nationalised in two tranches in 1969 and 1980) begins with a capital base of Rs 1,000 crore.

Headquartered in Delhi, Bhartiya Mahila Bank-s seven branches would become operational across the country, including Kolkata, Chennai, Ahemdabad and Guwahati from today. Finance Minister P.Chidambaram recollected the promise he had made in his budget speech earlier this year to start a bank for women. The board of directors of the bank would be a 8-member all-women board. He hoped that the bank would remain not merely a symbol but the substance of empowerment of women.

5. Top Indian industrialist Ratan Tata has returned as a board member of East West Centre, a prominent American think tank. He is returning to the board and has worked with the organisation several times between 1993 and 2004. East West Centre also elected Takeshi Niinami, the CEO of Japan-s Lawson Inc.

The Honolulu-based think tank-s board consists of 18 members, including five appointed by the US Secretary of State, five appointed by the Governor of Hawaii, five from Asia or the Pacific Islands and three ex-officio members, including the Governor of Hawaii, the Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, and the President of the University of Hawaii.

US President Barack Obama has nominated Indian-American Vivek Murthy for the post of Surgeon General, which a top American lawmaker described as a historic moment for the community across the country. Once Confirmed, he will not only be the first-ever Indian-American to occupy this post but also the youngest ever Surgeon General of the country. The surgeon general serves a four-year term and is the administration's top official on public health issues.

2. The General Assembly's human rights committee passed a resolution on Tuesday urging Myanmar to give the stateless Rohingya minority equal access to citizenship and to crack down on Buddhist violence against them and other Muslims in the Southeast Asian nation. In 1982, Myanmar passed a citizenship law recognizing eight races and 130 minority groups but omitted the nation's 800,000 Rohingya, among Myanmar's 60 million people.

3. Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was presented with a record third -Golden Boot- award on Wednesday for scoring the most goals in Europe's domestic leagues last season. The 26-year-old Messi helped Barcelona win the 2012-13 Spanish league by scoring 46 goals despite missing several games with a right hamstring pull near the end of the season. Messi also won the award for 34 goals in 2009-10, and a Spanish record 50 in 2011-12.

1. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed Public Sector Banks (PSBs) to provide loans to women self-help groups (SHGs) at 7% per annum to avail the benefit of interest rate subvention scheme under the Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana-Aajeevika (SGSY) scheme. All women SHGs will be eligible for interest subvention to avail the credit upto 3 lakh Rupees at 7% rate.

2. Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) and the People-s Republic of China-based Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) have signed a memorandum of understanding to boost co-operation. The agreement is designed to facilitate potential collaboration in areas such as knowledge-sharing, research and price risk management.

3. The government has slapped an additional penalty of USD 792 million on Reliance Industries for producing less than targeted natural gas from its eastern offshore KG-D6 block. A notice disallowing USD 792 million out of the cost already incurred on the Bay of Bengal fields was sent to RIL on November 14. With this, a total of $1.797 billion penalty in form of cost being disallowed, has been levied on RIL for producing less than targeted output during the past three years.

4. Anjolie Ela Menon, a contemporary artist was awarded with Dayawati Modi Award for Art and Culture and Education by Dayawati Foundation yesterday. The award comprised of a cash price of 2.51 lakh rupees, a silver shield and a scroll of hounour.

5. Engineering Excellence Award 2013 was conferred on the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited (SPMCIL), a Public Sector Unit under the Ministry of Finance, and Government of India. The award was given by Engineering Watch at SCOPE Convention Centre in Delhi. The second Best Engineering Marvel for Project Innovativeness was conferred on Modernisation of Ink Factory Project at Bank Note Press, Dewas.

6. The Dutch film "Kauwboy" directed by Boudewijn Koole, won the golden elephant trophy for the best live action feature film at the 18 thInternational Children's Film Festival India (ICFFI) at Hyderabad yesterday. The movie is about how a 12-year-old boy Jojo adopts an abandoned baby jackdaw and takes care of it although his father does not approve of it. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh.

7. Rizvi-Springfield skipper Prithvi Shaw slammed world record 546 runs against St. Francis D'Assisi in the Harris Shield tournament match today breaking Armaan Jaffer's previous Harris Shield record of 498. His innings of 546 came in 367 minutes and took 330 balls. He scored 85 fours and five sixes. It was Harris Shield, which first brought Sachin Tendulkar into national prominence after his world record partnership of 664 with Vinod Kambli that was broken a few years back.

8. India's senior women's hockey team coach Inderjit Singh Gill passed away today in a fatal road accident near Sangrur in Punjab. His wife suffered serious injuries in a road accident that took place when their car collided with a truck, police said. Both of them were on their way from Patiala to Dhanaula. He was 59. He was a Sports Authority of India (SAI) coach who did his NIS Diploma of Coaching in 1979.

9. Hockey India has appointed former Olympic gold-medallist V Baskaran as a coach of the men's national team to work under the recently-appointed chief coach Terry Walsh. He has joined the training camp of the senior men's hockey team at SAI Centre, Bhopal for preparations of the FIH World League Finals in Delhi in January 2014 and the FIH World Cup to be held in The Netherlands next year.

1. Pakistani School girl and Peace campaigner Malala Yousafzai received the EU's prestigious Sakharov human rights prize yesterday for her brave crusade for the right of the children to education. The European Parliament President Martin Schulz presented the award to the 16-year-old at a ceremony in Strasbourg, France. Malala, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize earlier this year, dedicated the award to "the unsung heroes of Pakistan" and to human rights campaigners worldwide. The 50,000-euro (USD 65,000) prize is also considered Europe's top human rights award.

2. British biochemist Frederick Sanger, who is the only person to win Nobel Prize two times for Chemistry passed away on 19th November in Cambridge, England. He was 95.  He won the Nobel Prize in 1958 for development of the methods, which helped to unravel the chemical structure of Protein, mainly insulin. 1. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy will be presented Brahm Gaurav award here on 24th November by Brahm Foundation for his service to society at this critical juncture. Swamy will be felicitated on the occasion of the Brahmin convention slated for Sunday.

2. Gurbax Singh Sandhu was retained as the national coach of the men's Indian boxing team till the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Sandhu, under whose guidance India won its first Olympic and World Championships medal through Vijender Singh (75kg), has been with the team for two decades.

3. The All India Football Federation has re-appointed its General Secretary Kushal Das for a second term of another three years in its Executive Committee meeting in New Delhi. He had also served as Chief Financial Officer of the ICC and International Management Group (IMG) India. The Executive Committee also approved the recommendations of AIFF Technical Committee, headed by former captain Bhaichung Bhutia, to extend the contract of national team coach Wim Koevermans and Technical Director Rob Baan by one year.

4. Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal crashed out of the women's singles competition at the Hong Kong Super Series badminton tournament in Kowloon today after suffering a narrow defeat against Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand.  Ajay Jayaram's campaign in the men's singles competition also came to an end after he went down 18-21, 12-21 to Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia in another match today.

1. Rafael Nadal was ranked as the world number one at the end of the 2013 season as per the latest WTA ranking published this week, following the Czech Republic's 3-2 win over Serbia in the Davis Cup final. Rafael Nadal secured 13,030 points followed by Novak Djokovic (12,260 points), David Ferrer (5,800 points), Andy Murray (5,790 5 points), Juan Martin Del Potro (5,255 points) and Roger Federer (4,205 points) at 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th positions respectively.

2. Serena Williams was named WTA player of the year for the second year running and the fifth time overall as she enjoyed one of the greatest seasons in WTA history. She won 78 of 82 matches, the US Open and French Open among 11 titles, and a record $12,385,572 in prize money. Since February, she's been the oldest No. 1 in WTA history at 32. She was also player of the year in 2002, 2008, 2009 and 2012.

1. Justice Ajit Prakash Shah took over as the new Chairman of the 20th Law Commission of India today. Justice Shah succeeds Justice D. K. Jain who resigned last month to take over as the President of National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. Justice Shah started his career as a lawyer at Solapur district Court in Maharashtra and in Bombay High Court. He was Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. The 20th Law Commission of India was constituted with the Order of the Government of India with effect from 1 September 2012. It has a three-year term ending on 31st August, 2015.

2. Goa Police filed an FIR against Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal, who has been accused by a woman journalist colleague of sexual assault during an event here about 10 days ago. Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had ordered a preliminary inquiry into the allegations by the girl that she was sexually abused by Tejpal during an event in Goa. Earlier, Tejpal had written to Tehelka's Managing Editor, saying he was "recusing" from work for 6 months admitting to "bad lapse of judgement".

3. Eminent Scientist and Bharat Ratna awardee Prof CNR Rao has become the first Indian scientist to be elected as honorary foreign member of Chinese Academy of Science (CAS). He was elected by CAS at its General Assembly held on November 4, the Centre said in a release that the academy had bestowed on him the prestigious Award for International Scientific Cooperation in January 2012. He has also been conferred 60 Honoris Causa (Honorary Doctorates) by various universities across the globe.

4. Three Indians are among the six authors who have been shortlisted for the $50,000 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2014. The shortlisted works include "The Book of Destruction" by Anand and "Goat Days" by Benyamin and the third one is "Chronicle of a Corpse Bearer" by Cyrus Mistry. The winning titles were announced at a ceremony held at the London School of Economics in London.

5. Prominent Indian-Americans author Salman Rushdie and filmmaker Mira Nair have been honoured for their commitment and contributions to the global artistic community. The Indo-American Arts Council (IAAC) honoured renowned Indian-American pathologist Majula Bansal also as it commemorates its 15th anniversary this year to celebrate its contributions of Indian performing, visual and literary arts to New York City-s diverse cultural scene.

6. PwC India announced that Deepak Kapoor, had been re-elected for a second term as its Chairman. Kapoor will hold office for a three-year period beginning January 1, 2014. He will also continue to serve on the PwC Global Strategy Council.

7. Five-time title-holder Viswanathan Anand's reign as the world champion came to an end today with Norway's Magnus Carlsen taking the crown after a hard-fought draw in the 10th game of the World Chess Championship match.  Carlsen closed the championship with two games to spare by taking his tally to required 6.5 points against 3.5 by Anand.  Anand had won the world championship title five times -- 2000, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012.

8. Indian Cricketer Virat Kohli became the fastest batsman to score 5000 runs in one-day internationals when he scored 86 against the West Indies in the first ODI in Kochi yesterday. Virat Kohli achieved the feat in just 120 matches and 114 innings. He has so far scored 5005 runs, which included 17 centuries and 27 fifties in his short career.In terms of innings, Virat Kohli has equalled the record of Sir Viv Richards of West Indies, who also achieved the feat in 114 innings way back in 1987 but it was Viv's 126th match.

9. Indian tennis player Sania Mirza came back into the top 10 of the world women's doubles by jumping two ranks to ninth rank in the latest WTA Team Rankings issued this week. Sania had won back-to-back titles as she lifted the China Open trophy earlier this month, followed by another triumph in Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

1. Nisha Desai Biswal was sworn in as the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia. United States Secretary of State John K Kerry administered the oath to Nisha Desai Biswal as she was sworn in as the US Assistant Secretary of State at the George Marshall East Auditorium of the White House. Nisha Desai Biswal will oversee the US Foreign Policy and relations at the State Department for India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. This is the first time an Indian-American is heading the South Asia Bureau.

2. At the same time, US President Barack Obama has appointed yet another Indian American, Gargee Ghosh, to a key administration post as member of his Global Development Council. Ghosh is currently the director of Policy Analysis and Financing (PAF) at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. PAF is the foundation's internal policy shop focused on priorities, trends and innovations in international development financing. Its work spans aid policy, country financing and engagement with international financial institutions.

3. Leading stock exchange of USA, the Dow Jones index closed at a new all-time high on Friday, after closing above the 16,000 mark for the first time on Thursday. At close of trade the Dow was up by 54.78 points, or 0.34%, at 16064.77. Also the broader S&P 500 index of 500 companies closed above 1,800 for the first time at 1,804.76.

4. 1. The Empowered Group of Ministers, EGoM on Telecom has approved hiking the reserve price by 25% for the next round of auction of the mobile phone spectrum. The group, headed by Defence Minister AK Antony, agreed with the recommendations of the Telecom Commission to better the reserve or base price, suggested by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, for the auction of spectrum in the 1800 and 900 Mega hz bands used by GSM operators.

2. India successfully tested its nuclear-capable ballistic missile Dhanush from a naval ship in the Bay of Bengal today. The missile was fired from a naval ship as part of the training exercise of the Indian Navy. Dhanush is a naval version of the nuclear-capable ballistic missile Prithvi. It has a range of 350 km and is capable of carrying a conventional as well as nuclear payload of more than 500 kg. It can hit both land and sea-based targets.

3. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday declared that the dollar swap window would be closed on November 30; however, banks which will get firm commitment from international financial institutions will be able to continue availing the special incentive till December 31, 2013.

4. G. Ramachandran, former Union Finance Secretary passed away yesterday. He was 86. Ramachandran was a 1949-batch IAS officer and he played a critical role in financial policies, including the nationalisation of banks. Ramachandran recently published his memoirs in a book titled -Walking with Giants.-

1. International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women is observed today (25th November) across the globe to raise awareness about the problem. UN Secretary General's Campaign for the year 2013 'Unite to end violence against women' has announced the 25th of each month as Orange Day. The day invites to wear orange attire to highlight its calls for the eradication of violence against women without delay. This year, the Unite Campaign is extending Orange Day to 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

2. Iran signed a historic deal with the United States and five other world powers yesterday, agreeing to a temporary freeze of its nuclear program in the most significant agreement between Washington and Tehran after more than three decades of issues. The deal commits Iran to curb its nuclear activities for six months in exchange for limited and gradual sanctions relief. The six-month period will give diplomats time to negotiate a more sweeping agreement.  The deal was considered to be a significant deal to restore peace in the Middle East region and remove pressure from Global crude oil prices as Iran is one of the largest Crude Oil Producers in the world.

3. Global tech giant Apple has acquired PrimeSense, an Israeli firm which specializes in making 3D motion detection technology. PrimeSense is best known for developing gesture control for Microsoft's Kinect sensor, and has made strides towards bringing the technology to mobile. The likely deal value is expected to be around USD 360 million.

4. Sebastian Vettel won Formula One's season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix Sunday to complete this season on a high note. With this win, he matches Michael Schumacher's record of 13 victories in a year and equaling the nine consecutive wins of Alberto Ascari. He had already secured his fourth straight F1 title win before this race. His Red Bull teammate Mark Webber stood second and Ferrari-s Fernando Alonso stood third in the same race.

5. Ireland and Afghanistan have been qualified for next year-s ICC World Twenty20 after winning their respective matches in the Qualifiers. Ireland defeated Hong Kong and Afghanistan defeated Kenya to secure place in the ICC World Twenty20 Cup 2014. This is Ireland-s fourth successive qualification for the World Twenty20 and Afghanistan-s third qualification.

6. Jason Day, Australian Golfer won the Golf world cup at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne. Australia team (Jason Day and Adam Scott) also won the team Championships by defeating the American team of Matt Kuchar and Kevin Streelman. Indian Golfer Anirban Lahiri finished with 25th place at the tournament. India finished 26th and last in the team Championships.

1. Justice Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar was sworn in as the 22nd Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh by Governor Ram Naresh Yadav yesterday. He was appointed by President of India. He was earlier the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh and has also been a judge in the Bombay High Court.  He succeeded Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde who was elevated to the Supreme Court earlier this year.

2. India has overtaken China as the most attractive investment destination according to a survey conducted by Ernst & Young (EY) a global professional services and consulting firm. The top three investing countries into India, are United States of America (USA), France and Japan, as per the survey results.

3. The Reserve Bank of India has said today that it will launch CPI-indexed bonds aimed at protecting the savings of retail investors from the impact of price rise by the end of next month. -Guidelines will be out soon...We are likely to launch the first tranche before end of December. We will come out with details (quantum),- as per RBI Deputy Governor H.R. Khan. He also added -This year it should be between Rs 10,000-15,000 crore (wholesale price and consumer price indexed bonds) but exact amount will come out. This is part of overall borrowing programme-.

4. CBI has named a Deputy Managing Director of State Bank of India, a former AGM of the bank and a businessman in a case of alleged graft in disbursal of loan of above Rs 400 crore. Its Economic Offences Wing in Mumbai has registered a case against Deputy MD of SBI Shyamal Acharya who is also the head of Mid-Corporate wing of the Bank, former SBI official K.K. Kumarah and Chairman of Worlds Window Group Piyoosh Goyal for alleged graft. As per case details, Goyal had allegedly applied for over Rs 400 crore of corporate loan from SBI but only Rs 75 crore was approved.

1. Global technology major Apple is the world-s most valuable brand followed by Microsoft, Coca-Cola, IBM and Google, as per the latest list published by Forbes. Apple has topped the -World-s Most Valuable List- compiled by -Forbes- magazine with a brand value of USD 104.3 billion. Microsoft secured 2nd place with a brand value of USD 56.7 billion followed by Coca-Cola (USD 54.9 billion), IBM (USD 50.7 billion), Google (USD 47.3 billion) which make up the top five. Among the top 10 brands, McDonald-s, General Electric, Intel, Samsung and Louis Vuitton have been ranked from 6th to 10th.

2. Doug McMillon, head of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.-s international business, will replace Mike Duke as chief executive officer when he retires on 1st Feb next year. Duke will stay on as chairman of the board-s executive committee, and McMillon will join the board immediately. McMillon will become the fifth CEO since Wal-Mart-s founder Sam Walton.

3. Japanese firm Hitachi announced that it will acquire Prizm Payment Services as part of plans to grow revenues in India. Hitachi, which did not disclose the financial details of the deal, said the transaction is expected to be concluded by February.

4. Mexico will award its 2013 International Prize for Equality and Non-Discrimination to Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager girl and Peace activist who shot by the Taliban for championing girls' rights to education. The award seeks to recognize Malala's efforts for "the protection of human rights" and especially her fight to protect the right to education without discrimination on "grounds of age, gender, sex and religion," Mexico's official National Council to Prevent Discrimination said in a statement.

1. BJP-s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is among Time magazine-s shortlisted candidates for its -Person of the Year- title and has emerged as an early favourite among the readers in an online poll. Time has shortlisted 42 global leaders, entrepreneurs and celebrities for its -Person of the Year 2013- and will announce the winner next month. Other candidates in the list are Japan-s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, US President Barack Obama, Pakistani teenage education activist Malala Yousafzai, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and even the new heir to the British throne Prince George. Modi is the only Indian in the shortlist.

2. Constitution Day was observed across India today (26th November) to honour the Constitution of India. The Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, which came into force on 26 January 1950.

3. The Supreme Court has constituted a 10-member committee headed by its woman judge, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, to deal with complaints of sexual harassment within its precincts. Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam formed the Supreme Court Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC) in which there are six other female members.  The panel is in consonance with the guidelines laid down by apex court in its judgement in Vishaka case for dealing with complaints of sexual harassment at workplace

4. Gullapalli N. Rao has been honoured with the -Outstanding humanitarian service award- by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The founder and Chairman of the Hyderabad-based, LV Prasad Eye Institute, Rao has been recognized for the eye care delivery model which he created with the Institute and his contributions to prevention of blindness globally.

5. Mid-sized private sector lender Yes Bank announced a multi-year deal with the Hockey India League (HIL) commencing with the 2014 season. Six franchise teams will feature in the second season of the Hero Hockey India League to be held from January 25 to February 23, 2014. The League will be an opportunity for 144 leading players to showcase their skills in 34 matches at six different venues.

6. India's Deepak Lathore won a Gold and two Silver medals in the Boys' 50 kilogramme category of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. Altogether India won 36 medals, including 19 gold, on the second day of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships at Penang, Malaysia today.

1. Lt Gen Raheel Sharif has been appointed Pakistan's new Army chief. General Sharif succeeds General Ashfaq Kayani, who steps down on Friday after six years in the top post. The post of army chief is arguably the most powerful in Pakistan and most crucial considering recent cases of drone strikes, terrorist activities and protest against Nato supply route through Pakistan.

2. Nepali Congress (NC) won the recent second Constituent Assembly elections held this month and emerged as single largest winning Party. The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) secured second place in the election. Elections to the Constituent Assembly were held under two categories — first-past-the-post and proportional representation. A total of 240 seats were allocated in the first category and 365 seats in the proportional representation category. The remaining 26 seats in the 601-member will be nominated by the Cabinet later. Nepali Congress Party wins 105 of the 240 directly elected seats followed by Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist) with 91 seats.

3. Priti Patel, an Indian Origin British MP has been honoured with the prestigious Asian Trader Editor-s Award. She was awarded for her tireless campaigning to support small shops and convenience stores. Priti has supported the sector by campaigning for tougher punishments for offenders, who commit retail crime, reforms to business rates and cuts to red tape. She has also warned the Government of the impact on small shops of new tobacco controls being proposed by Europe.

4. A top Indian-American executive at Citigroup, Neeraj Sahai, has been appointed president of Standard & Poors Ratings Services, the world-s largest credit ratings firm. He is currently head of Citi-s securities and fund services business and also acts as chief fiduciary officer of Citigroup.

5. Some private investors from GCC countries have planned to set up the first full-fledged Islamic bank in the euro zone. The Eurisbank will come up in Luxembourg during the last quarter of 2014. With an initial capital of $80m, the bank would offer retail, corporate and private banking services, and would open branches in Paris, Brussels, the Netherlands and Frankfurt. Since the global financial crisis, some European governments have shown more interest in Islamic finance, partly because it could be a way to attract funds from the Gulf and Southeast Asia.

6. A team of ex-Nokia employees has released the first handset running on a new smartphone platform. The Jolla phone - pronounced -Yol-la- is powered by open-source operating system Sailfish, but can run most apps designed for Google's Android platform.

7. The world-s two biggest steelmakers, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal and ArcelorMittal, are close to a $2-billion deal to acquire a US factory from Germany-s ThyssenKrupp. These two companies are making a joint bid for the plant in the state of Alabama that manufactures automotive sheet steel, aiming to more than double their combined production capacity in the US.

8. Sarah Teelow, the world champion water skier of Australia died this week after a fall during a high-speed endurance race on Australia-s Hawkesbury River. She was 21. She fell from her skis after the start of the 75 mile Bridge to Bridge Water Ski Classic near Sydney. Teelow had won the Formula 2 category at the World Waterski Racing Championships in Spain in September.

1. Punjab Government has announced a new Atta-Dal Scheme from December onwards in the state after the Food Security Programme (FSP) launched by the Central Government recently. Under the scheme wheat has been further subsidised and will be given to the beneficiary at 1 rupee per kilogram instead of 2 rupees given under FSP. 2.5 kilogram Dal would be given at 20 rupees per kg.

2. The Reserve Bank of India has decided to recognise self-regulatory organisations for monitoring such institutions in order to ensure effective functioning of Non-Bank Finance Company-Microfinance Institutions (NBFC-MFIs). A self-regulatory organisation (SRO) is a voluntary body appointed by the industry participants to monitor the functioning of all players in the industry and bring in some degree of standardisation in industry practices. In its latest notification released, the RBI invited applications from interested parties who wish to become SROs. At present, there are two SROs — Micro Finance Institutions Network (MFIN) and Sa-dhan — monitoring the functioning of NBFC-MFIs in the country.

3. Tata Sons Ltd has withdrawn its application for a new bank licence, according to the Reserve Bank of India. "The company has indicated that its current financial services operating model best supports the needs of the Tata Group-s domestic and overseas strategy, and provides adequate operating flexibility to its companies, while securing the interests of the group-s diverse stakeholder base," RBI said in a statement today. RBI will announce the final list of new banking licences in January next year.

4. National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) received the EEPC (Engineering Export Promotion Council, Eastern Region)-s Gold Trophy this week. NALCO has bagged the EEPC Gold Trophy, as Top Exporter in the Large Enterprise Category, for its outstanding export performance during the year 2011-12. National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) is a Navratna PSU and India-s leading manufacturer-exporter of alumina and aluminium.

5. The Bombay Stock Exchange will launch its platform for trading in currency derivatives from Friday, making it the fourth bourse in the country to offer such trades. Other stock exchanges present in the currency futures segment are — National Stock Exchange, MCX-SX and United Stock Exchange. Currency derivative contracts allow investors to take position on change in foreign exchange rates between pairs of two currencies, such as rupee and dollar.

6. The 4th World Cup Kabaddi, circle style, will be held in Punjab from 7th December to 14th December. This was announced yesterday by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, chairman of the organising committee. The world cup, is organised by the Punjab government, and it will witness 12 teams in the men section and eight in the women section. Men teams from India, Pakistan, Iran, England, Spain, Denmark, Scotland, USA, Canada, Argentina, Sierra Leon and Kenya and women teams from India, Pakistan, England, Denmark, USA, Mexico, Kenya and New Zealand will participate in the same event.

1. Dubai to host World Expo 2020. This was decided after the third and the final round of voting in Paris yesterday. Four cities including Dubai in UAE, Yekaterinbergh in Russia, Sao Paulo in Brazil and Izmir in Turkey were competing to host the prestigious event. The theme of Dubai for the EXPO 2020 will be -Connecting Minds, Creating the Future-.  World Expos is a meeting point for the global community to share innovations and make progress on issues of international importance such as the global economy, sustainable development and improved quality of life for the world-s population.

2. Nepal and the UAE have qualified for the ICC T20 World cup which will be held in Bangladesh next year. Nepal defeated Hong Kong and the UAE defeated the Netherlands to secure their place for the ICC T20 world cup for the first time. They will join other two countries Afghanistan and Ireland, qualified for the world cup tournament earlier this month.

1. The Reserve Bank of India has relaxed norms for participation of Non-Banking Finance Companies - NBFCs in insurance joint ventures. RBI said in a notification today that it will allow NBFCs to invest more than 50% of their total equity in insurance joint ventures but on a case to case basis. The notification adds that the relaxation will also be subject to compliance by the NBFC with all other regulatory conditions. As per existing norms, an NBFC cannot hold more than 50% of the paid-up capital of an insurance joint venture.

2. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), on Wednesday, released the tariff structure and guidelines for mobile banking services, a step that would help rural customers who do not have access to banks and financial services. The TRAI has prescribed a ceiling tariff for an outgoing unstructured supplementary service data (USSD)-based mobile banking service at Rs.1.50 per USSD session. The authority wants to utilise the benefits of mobile banking for financial inclusion. A large section of the population, especially in rural areas, does not have an easy access to banks.

3. Maharashtra batsman Vijay Zol has been named captain of the India Under-19 squad for the ACC Asia Cup cricket tournament, which will be played in the UAE next month. Kerala wicket-keeper Sanju Vishwanadh has been appointed as Vice-Captain for the series. India will open their campaign against the hosts, UAE, on December 28.

4. The 8-member squad for the upcoming FIH junior hockey World Cup tournament has been announced. Manpreet Singh has been named captain of the junior hockey team. The Junior Hockey world Cup is scheduled from December 6-15 in New Delhi.

5. Indian lifters bag 87 medals at C'wealth Championships. Youth Asian Games champion Ragala Venkat Rahul (77kg) stole the show with half a dozen gold medals as India signed off with a whopping 87 medals at the Commonwealth Youth and Junior Championships which concluded in Penang, Malaysia today. In the senior men's division, Sivalingam Sathish Kumar (77kg) won three gold medals. India signed off with an overall tally of 47 gold, 28 silver and 12 bronze medals at the event.



India-s GDP growth improves to 4.8% in Q2 of FY2013-14; Increases optimism about the economy

India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth stood at 4.8% for the second quarter (July - September) of the current financial year which was slightly better compared to 4.4% GDP growth in the previous quarter. In the second quarter of 2012-13, the growth was 5.2%.

The mining sector witnessed negative growth of 0.4% and manufacturing sector witnessed a growth of just 1% which pulled down the overall GDP growth numbers. Financing, insurance, real estate & business services sector growth stood at 10% in second quarter compared to 8.9% growth in the previous quarter. Agriculture and Electricity sectors witnessed turn-around as growth in those sectors improved to 4.6% and 7.7% respectively in the second quarter compared to 2.7% and 3.7% in the previous quarter.

This higher than expected GDP growth number in the second half of this fiscal has raised hopes of Indian economy returning a much better performance. With this rebound of GDP growth rate, policymakers are now confident that Indian economy will grow 5-5.5% this fiscal year.

1. Pakistani school girl and peace activist Malala Yousafzai, Kainat Riaz and Shazia Ramzan were chosen for the GG2 Hammer Award, for their bravery at the GG2 (Garavi Gujarat 2) Leadership Awards 2013 in London. The activist Malala Yousafzai won the number one spot in the GG2 Power List 101 for her work in raising awareness for female empowerment. The GG2 Power 101 has been compiled by The Asian Media and Marketing Group (AMG) and features the top 101 most influential Asians in the UK, ranging from all walks of life.

2. The eurozone's unemployment rate dropped to 12.1% in October which is the first drop since early 2011. At the same time, the annual rate of consumer inflation rose from 0.7% to 0.9%. The unemployment rate in Spain and Greece stood at nearly 27% while Austria has the lowest unemployment rate at 5%.

3. Brazil's central bank has raised its benchmark interest rate by 50 bps to 10% from 9.5% this week. This is the sixth time consecutive increase in a row and the latest rise has taken the key rate to the highest level since March 2012. The benchmark interest rate was increased in order to fight inflation which jumped to 5.8% in October, higher than 4.5% target.

4. The Italian Senate expelled ex- Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi from Parliament over his tax fraud conviction. The Senate declared Berlusconi ineligible for parliament after he was convicted of masterminding a complex system of illegally inflated invoices to cut the tax bill for his Mediaset television empire.

5. Famous Tennis player Rafael Nadal was named the greatest Spanish sports star in history by readers of Spanish sports daily. The winner of 13 Grand Slam-s and the current number 1 in the ATP world ranking, received the award for the 75th anniversary of the Spanish sports paper Diario Marca

1. Indian Cricket legend and Bharat Ratna awardee Sachin Tendulkar has been appointed as UNICEF's first brand ambassador for South Asia. Sachin Tendulkar will work for promoting hygiene and sanitation in the South Asian region for two years. Sachin Tendulkar was already involving with the UNICEF campaigns for polio and global hand washing.

2. Famous Hollywood actress Michelle Yeoh, known for her roles in 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', 'Tomorrow Never Dies' and 'Memoirs of a Geisha', will attend the closing ceremony of the 44th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to be held on November 30. The 50-year-old Malaysian actress's documentary film 'Pad Yatra: A Green Odyssey' on which she served as an executive producer, will also be screened at the on-going festival. Michelle Yeoh will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony.

3. Global tech giant Google setup an election portal in India to provide polls and politics related news to users in India. The launched search engine will also provide information on the political parties. This portal will help the voters of India to get the answers on elections and voting-related queries to make an informed decision. It will cover news from leading publications and broadcasters both in English and Hindi.

4. As per latest notification published by the RBI, Pin numbers will be compulsory for all debit card transactions from tomorrow onwards. Debit card holders will be required to punch in their PIN numbers every time they use the card from tomorrow. This move will minimize frauds involving debit cards.

5. Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd (MCX) has appointed Satyananda Mishra as the new chairman of MCX-s board. Market Regulatory authority, the Forward Markets Commission (FMC) also approved the appointment of Satyananda Mishra as the independent Director of MCX's board till 31 March 2016. Earlier, the exchange had appointed R M Premkumar, a former bureaucrat as its interim chairman. Mr Premkumar will continue to remain independent director on the board.

6. Indian-origin doctor Jaswinder S. Bamrah, consultant psychiatrist in Manchester, won Asian Lite Professional Excellence Award for his contribution to the medical field in the UK. Peter W. Mount, Chairman of the Central Manchester Foundation Trust, presented the award to Dr Bamrah at a ceremony in Manchester last night.

7. The Assam Pavilion was adjudged -First for Excellence in display amongst State Governments and Union Territory Pavilions- and was given the award of Gold Medal in the India International Trade Fair 2013 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi this week. This is the first time in the 33 years of history of the IITF that a State Government has consecutively won the gold medal after winning the same in 2012. The theme of this year was -Inclusive Growth- and the theme Pavilion set up reflected the growth of various sectors in the State.

8. Veteran choreographer for several Tamil and South Indian films R. Raghuram passed away at his residence in Chennai yesterday. He was 64. One of the most respected choreographers in Tamil film industry, Raghuram 'Master' had celebrated his golden jubilee (50 years) in film industry last year.

9. The Sports Ministry on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Department of AIDS Control with the objective to "reach a large number of youth engaged in sports activities" at village, district and state level with information on STI/HIV/AIDS prevention and related services. The MoU was signed between Secretary, Department of Sports Ajit M Saran, and Secretary, Department of AIDS Control, Lov Verma, in New Delhi this week.

10. Indian weightlifters ended their Commonwealth Youth, Junior & Senior Championships in style, bagging six medals today to take their overall tally to a staggering 117, including 57 gold, 39 silver and 21 bronze, on the final day of the event in Penang, Malaysia. The biggest contributors to the tally were the youth boys, who notched up 24 medals, including 16 gold and eight silver. The youth girls won 21 medals, inclusive of 12 gold.

11. India's rising shuttler PV Sindhu has entered into the Women's final of Macau Open Badminton tournament. She defeated China's Qin Ching in a tough game by 21-13, 18-21, 21-19 in the semi-finals today. In the finals she will take on seventh seeded Canada's Lee Michel on SUnday.
