  1. Foreign Minister Hashim Thaci was elected as president of Kosovo by the Members of Parliament amid the ongoing protests after winning simple majority in the voting held recently. He succeeded Atifete Jahjaga. He was a guerrilla leader during a conflict that led to Kosovo, after declaring independence from Serbia.

  2. Oscar-winning Hollywood actor George Kennedy has passed away. He was 91.He won the Academy Award in Best Supporting Actor category for the classic movie 'Cool Hand Luke' in 1968.

  1. Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in New Delhi was awarded as the best airport by size in the Asia Pacific region in the category of 25-40 million passengers per annum for the second consecutive years, as per ranking published by theAirports Council International (ACI).It also won awards for best airport by size & region-Asia Pacific (25-40 million passenger per annum) and second-best airport by region (Asia Pacific).

  2. The central government has set up a committee headed by Special Secretary (Internal Security) of Ministry of Home Affairs Mahesh Kumar Singla to recommend Scheduled Tribe status to six communities in Assam. These communities are Koch Rajbongshi, Moran, Matak, Tai Ahom, Chutia and Adivasi (Tea Tribes). The committee will suggest the rules for shifting the existing status of these communities from OBC to ST.

  3. President Pranab Mukherjee has announced Kerala as the first digital state of India when he launched a digital empowerment campaign in Kozhikode in order to bridge the digital divide by 2020. Kerala has a mobile tele-density of 95% and over 60% of its population has access to the Internet, which makes it a truly digital state.

  4. India's second largest airline Jet Airways has appointed its Chief Financial Officer Amit Agarwal as an acting Chief Executive Officer with effective from 1stMarch 2016. He will act as CEO till a new CEO is appointed. He joined Jet Airways in December 2015 and has more than 24 years of experience having held leadership positions in India, Europe and North America.

  5. Zee Media Corporation announced its acquisition of 80% stake in India Today group-s loss-making e-commerce and TV shopping entities; Today Merchandise and Today Retail Network Pvt Ltd for Rs 166. Zee Media will acquire 49% stake by investing Rs 39.7 crore before June this year.

  6. Indian snooker player Rahul Sachdev has won the 1st All India Open Invitational Snooker Championship 2016 in Aurangabad after defeating Pushpender Singh of Railways in the finals with 5-3 score. The All India Open Invitational Snooker Championship 2016 was organized by Billiards and Snooker Association of Aurangabad.

  7. Car racer Armaan Ebrahim was awarded the Motorsports Man-of-the-Year Trophy at a ceremony organized by the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI).With this, he won the -Raymond Gautam Singhania Rolling Trophy- and a cash prize of Rs 2,00,000 for his performance in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia Series.

  1. NASA astronaut and Expedition 46 Commander Scott Kelly and his Russian counterpart Mikhail Kornienko returned on Earth after spending 340-day at the International Space Station. The landing took place in the city of Zhezkazgan in Kazhaksthan today morning local time. Their extended tour is part of an effort to study the effects of long-duration spaceflight on the body, so that NASA can prepare astronauts for longer flights to Mars and beyond.

  2. Microsoft founder Bill Gates retained No1 rank in the list of the world's richest person with a net worth of USD 75 billion, as per Forbes annual ranking of the world richest persons. With this, he has topped the last for last 3 consecutive years and 17 times in last 22 years. He is followed by Spanish billionaire Amancio Ortega, founder of clothing retail giant Zara and Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett.


Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani is positioned at 36, No 1 among India-s richest persons. Savitri Jindal and family was ranked at the 453rd place on the list with a net worth of USD 3.5 billion, first among Indian women. This year the Forbes' list of the world's billionaires includes 1,810 billionaires as compared to 1,826 last year. United States led with the highest number of billionaires with 540, followed by China with 251, Germany with 120, India with 84 and Russia with 77.

  1. Global ratings agency Moody's Analytics has cut its outlook for China from -stable- to -negative- in its latest report published today as the world-s second largest economy is losing steam continuously.As per report, the economy of China continues to lose steam and its economic growth to remain weak in coming quarters.

  1. Former Chief Justice of India Justice H L Dattu took charge as the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of India. With this, he became the seventh Chairperson of the NHRC and replaced Justice Cyriac Joseph, who was the acting Chairperson of NHRC.

  2. Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain took over as the Chief of Staff of the Visakhapatnam today. He succeeds Vice Admiral Bimal Verma who has been transferred as Commander-in-Chief of Andaman & Nicobar Command at Port Blair.

  3. Multi Commodity Exchange has appointed Mrugank Paranjape as its new MD and CEO with effective from 1stApril 2016. He will succeed Manoj Vaish. The exchange has also re designated Parveen Kumar Singhal, the present Joint Managing Director as President & Whole Time Director.

  4. Aditya Birla Group firm UltraTech has acquired JP Group-s cement plants for Rs 16,500 crore which turns out to be the biggest deal in the sector. Post this deal, UltraTech-s cement output will touch nearly 91 million tonne.

  5. India-s largest IT Services Company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been recognized as a Global Top Employer by the Top Employers Institute. The assessment was done among 1,072 companies worldwide and the TCS become 1st with an exceptional performer across 9 core HR areas including talent strategy, workforce planning, on-boarding, learning and development, performance management and leadership development etc. Others in the list include CJSC Technip, DHL, Dimension data, Saint Gobain, JT International, Mobinil, Mobistar, Orange and Valeo.

  1. World Wildlife Day is observed today (3rdMarch) across the world in order to raise awareness about the importance protecting wildlife.During its 68th session, the UN General Assembly had declared 3rd March as World Wildlife Day.


The theme for 2016 is "The future of wildlife is in our hands". As per a report by the World Wildlife Fund, the global wildlife population has decreased by 53% between 1970 and 2015.

  1. Whitfield Diffie and Martin Hellman are chosen for the 2015 AM Turing Award by the Association for Computing Machinery for their contributions to modern cryptography. This award, funded by Google, is also referred to as the "Nobel Prize for Computing". Whitfield Diffie is former Vice-President and Chief Security Officer of Sun Microsystems, and Martin E. Hellman is Professor emeritus of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University.


Their paper "New Directions in Cryptography'' was published in 1976 which introduced the ideas of public-key cryptography and digital signatures, which are considered as the foundation for regularly-used security protocols on the Internet now.

  1. Three British scientists were awarded with the prestigious 2016 Grete Lundbeck European Brain Research Prize (also known as Brain Prize) for giving vital insight about how the human brain remembers, learns and navigates.  They are Timothy Bliss, visiting worker at the Crick Institute in London, Graham Collingridge, professor of neuroscience in anatomy at the University of Bristol and Richard Morris, professor of neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh

  2. Akito Tachibana has been appointed as the Managing Director of Toyota Kirloskar Motor with effective from 1stApril this year. He will replace current MD Naomi Ishii. Currently he heads technical, purchase and quality assurance functions at Toyota Kirloskar.

  3. Former New Zealand Cricket team captain Martin Crowe passed away due to cancer in Auckland today.He was just 53. He played 77 tests and 143 one-day internationals for New Zealand in his 13-year long career. He scored 5,444 Test runs at an average of 45.36 with 17 centuries.

  1. India has been ranked at the 90th place among 126 countries in terms of Energy Security published by World Economic Forum (WEF). These 126 countries were rated based on 3 parameters which are affordability, environmental sustainability, security and access.


The list is topped by Switzerland followed by Norway and Sweden. Other countries in the top 10 are France, Denmark, Austria, Spain, Colombia, New Zealand and Uruguay in the same order. Among the BRIC nations, Brazil was ranked at the 25th place, followed by Russia at 52nd place and China at 94th place.

Famous poet Dr Bhagwati Lal Vyas was chosen for the 2015 Bihari Puraskar for his anthology of Rajasthani poems 'Katha Sun Aawe Hai Sabad'.His other popular works includes, Shatabdi Niruttar, Footpath Par Chiriya Nachti Hai and Suraj Leelti Ghatiyan. Bihari Puraskar, named after famous Hindi poet Bihari Lal Chaube, was instituted by KK Birla Foundation in 1991.

Moody-s Investors Service has cut its outlook for the debt ratings of Saudi Arabia and three other Gulf nations and marked Bahrain-s rating as Junk due to lower crude oil prices which impacted their finances adversely.Saudi Arabia-s Aa3 rating was placed on review for a possible downgrade along with United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar. It has cut Bahrain-s rating by one notch to Ba1, below investment grade.

  2. USA Non-farm payrolls increased by 242,000 jobs in February 2016 and 30,000 more jobs were added in December and January than previously reported, as per report published by the Labour Department on 4thMarch. The unemployment rate stood unchanged at an eight-year low of 4.9%. This ease fears about the World-s largest economic and may prompt the Federal Reserve to gradually raise interest rates this year.

  3. Columnist and author Jerry Pinto has been chosen for the 2016 Windham-Campbell Prize which is given to English-language writers "for their literary achievements or their potential".He won the award for his first novel 'Em and The Big Hoom' in the fiction category.

  4. Indian American investor Sunil Sabharwal took charge as the Alternate Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund which is one of the most powerful position within IMF as US holds more than 16.81% voting share in IMF.

  1. National Safety Day was observed on 4thMarch across the country on 4 March 2016 in order to raise awareness and enhance the safety among people. The National Safety Council was established on 4 March 1966 under the Societies Act in Mumbai and has a membership of 8,000.

  2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched "Setu Bharatam" programme with a budget of Rs 50,000-crore to build bridges for safe and seamless travel on National Highways. With this scheme, the government aims to make all national highways free from railway crossings by 2019. As of now, 208 new road over bridges or road under bridges places have been identified for construction for Rs 10200 crore.

  3. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) CEO and managing director N Chandrasekaran, former Chief Secretary of Gujarat Sudhir Mankad and non-executive chairman of Mahindra & Mahindra Bharat Narotam Doshi were have been appointed as non-official directors to the board of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) this week.The Reserve Bank's affairs are governed by a central board of directors. The board is appointed by the government of India which can have ten non-official directors from various fields and two government officials.

  4. Central Government has announced to confer Veteran actor and director Manoj Kumar with the 47th Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2015 for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema.The award consists of a Swarn Kamal (Golden Lotus), a cash prize of Rs.10 lakhs and a shawl.


Monaj Kumar was awarded with the National Film Award for the film "Upkaar" and was also awarded with the Padma Shri by Indian government in 1992.

Famous playwright and director Ratan Thiyam has been selected for prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for 2016 at the 11th edition of Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) for his contribution in the field of theatre and for creating a new language in theatre. With this award, he joins other theatre greats such as Zohra Sehgal, Badal Sarkar, Khaled Chowdhury, Ebrahim Alkazi, Girish Karnad and Heisnam Kanhailal. The awards consist of a specially designed trophy and a cheque of 1,00,000 rupees for the best production, 75,000 rupees for best original playwright and 45,000 rupees for all other award categories.

  2. Indian e-commerce retailer Flipkart has launched a digital wallet called Flipkart Money with the aim of providing a new payment method to its customers and to compete with other mobile wallet schemes. The digital wallet called was launched on the company's Android app, where users can hold a balance of Rs.10,000 at a time.

  3. Global e-commerce giant Amazon has announced to set up its second largest global delivery centre outside the USA in Hyderabadas a part of its future investment and growth within the country. This will be its largest Indian fulfilment centre (warehouse) over an area of 2,80,000 sq ft near Hyderabad.

  4. Former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma passed away on 4thMarch. He was 68. He was the first tribal individual be a cabinet minister in 1995 and the Lok Sabha Speaker in 1996. He was also the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990 and Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly from 1990 to 1991.

  5. Famous Indian film archivist and scholar Paramesh Krishnan Nair passed away on 4thMarch. He was of 82.He was the founder and former director of the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) in 1964 and collected films from India and from all over the world. He has been credited with collecting more than 12000 films for the archive.


He was also awarded with the Satyajit Ray Memorial Award and is responsible for the existence of exhaustive archives in India, including films such as Raja Harishchandra (1913), Achhut Kanya (1936) and Uday Shankar's Kalpana (1948) etc.

  1. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has promoted Hockey India national-level umpire Nepoleon Singh as the International Outdoor Umpire after his great performance in the recently-concluded 12th South Asian Games 2016. Nepoleon started his career as an umpire from Manipur in the third Hockey India Junior Women National Championship 2013 held at Ranchi, Jharkhand.

  2. Indian shooter Jitu Rai won gold medal in the 50m pistol round at the ISSF World Cup held in Bangkok after scoring 191.3 points in the final round. Pang Wei and Wang Zhiwei secured the second and third spot respectively.

  3. The Mumbai under-23 team won the Col CK Nayudu Trophy by defeating Madhya Pradesh in the final match held at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. This was Mumbai-s second big title of the season following its 41st Ranji Trophy title last week. Mumbai team also won the title in 2015 and 2016 and now will be awarded with a cash prize of 20 lakh rupees as winning reward.

  1. Ray Tomlinson, the inventor of email has passed away. He was 74. His invented use of the @ symbol in email addresses, which is now standard followed by all email address providers. He was the first to use the @ symbol to distinguish a user from its host because of which he was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame.

  2. American First Lady and Actress Nancy Davis Reagan passed away. She was 94. She was the wife of the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, hence first lady from 1981 to 1989.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has announced that the Government may merge 27 public sector banks into just six big banks in order to deal with the mounting NPAs.He said this in the recently held Gyan Sangam in Gurgaon. The Central Government is also planning to set up an expert committee to look into the issue and the committee will also work closely with the Banks Board Bureau (BBB) to identify the right matches for consolidation.

  2. Dr Amrita Patel, former Chairman of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), has been awarded with the Mahindra Samriddi India Agri Lifetime Achievement Aear-Krishi Shiromani Samman in New Delhi.She served as its Chairman of National Dairy Development Board from 1998 to 2014. She played an important role in the implementation of Operation Flood, the largest development programme in the world.

  3. Justice Ajit Singhwas sworn in as chief justice of the Guwahati High Court bythe Governor of Assam Padmanaba Balakrishna Acharya. Before this appointment, he was serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.

  4. Famous Malayalam actor and folk singer Kalabhavan Mani passed away in Kochi yesterday. He was 45. He had acted in over 200 films in Malayalam and other South Indian languages. He won the national special jury award in 2000 for his performance in Malayalam film Vasanthiyum Lakshmiyum Pinne Njaanum.

  5. Patna Pirateswon the 3rdedition of Pro kabaddi title after defeating defending champion U Mumba by 31-28 in the in the final match held at the Indira Gandhi indoor Stadium. Puneri Paltan secured third place after their 31-27 victory over Bengal Warriors in the play-off match for the third spot.

  6. India won the Asia Cup T20 title for a record sixth time after defeating Bangladesh by eight-wickets in the final held at Mirpur yesterday night.Chasing 121, India reached the target with seven balls to spare in the rain-hit 15-over match. Indian team made 122 for the loss of 2 wickets in 13.5 overs with Shikhar Dhawan's impressive 60 and Virat Kohli's 41 not out. With this win, India also sealed the No 1 spot in the ICC Twenty20 rankings.

Former world number one tennis player Maria Sharapova has announced that she failed a drugs test at the Australian Open this year as she was tested positive for meldonium which is a banned substance. She has been taking since 2006 for health issues.The International Tennis Federation has provisionally suspended her from March 12th pending further action.She provided the anti-doping sample in question on 26thJanuary this year, the day when she lost to Serena Williams in the Australian Open quarter finals.

  1. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has announced to withdraw proposal to tax Employee Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawals today in the Lok Sabha. Earlier he announced the proposal while presenting the Union Budget 2016-17 in the Lok Sabha last month. As per the proposal 60% of the amount deposited in the EPF account of the employee would be taxable at the time of withdrawal which drew lots of criticism from the salaried employees and middle class citizens.

  2. Famous Dogri poetess and writer Padma Sachdev has been awarded with the Krutitava Smagra Samman for 2015 by the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad in Kolkata for her tireless contribution in literature and Dogri Language.She was presented the award by West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi. The award carries Rs. one lakh, a shawl and citation.


She has won the Sahitya Akademi Award for her first collection of Dogri poetry title Mere Kavita. She has also received the Padma Shri award in 2001 and the Kabir Samman for poetry for the year 2007-08, awarded by Government of Madhya Pradesh.

  1. Global credit rating agency Fitch has maintained India-s GDP growth forecast at 7.5% for the current financial year 2015-16.This forecast is in line with the Finance Ministry-s growth estimates. As per its report, higher real disposable income, a normal monsoon and a substantial wage increase for central government employees will support economic recovery in the next two financial years.

  2. Telecom operator Reliance Jio has announced that it would provide free WiFi services at six cricket stadiums during the upcoming T20 World Cup matches. The company-s WiFi network Jio Net will be available in Eden Garden at Kolkata, Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai), IS Bindra Stadium (Mohali), HPCA stadium (Dharamshala), Chinnaswamy Stadium (Bengaluru) and Feroz Shah Kotla (Delhi) during the T20 world cup matches.

President Pranab Mukherjee presented Nari Shakti Puraskar for the year 2015 to 15 women, 5 organisations, one state and panchayat at the Rastapati Bhavan yesterday on the eve of International Women-s Day.The awards are given by the Union Ministry of Women & Child Development every year to institutions and individuals who have made exceptional contribution towards empowerment of women specially belonging to vulnerable and marginalised sections of society.


Haryana was awarded as a state for demonstrating improvement with work in improving Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) during 2015. Anganwadipuram Gram Panchayat, Mallapuram of Kerala was awarded for their work towards women empowerment.

  1. Mumbai will host BRICS Friendship Cities Conclave in April this year which will involve top Urban Policy makers and Planners from BRICS Nations, as announced by the government today. The BRICS Friendship Conclave will be a joint initiative of Ministry of External Affairs and Maharashtra Government to be held between 14thand 16thApril this year.

  2. Karnataka state government has launched Mukhyamantri Santwana Harish Yojana to provide free medical treatment to road accident victims for the first 48 hours (2 days) in the nearest government or private hospital of the accident spot. The scheme has been named after Harish Nanjappa who had donated his eyes moments before his death without getting proper medical help after accident.

  3. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against several senior executives of Syndicate Bank and some business persons for their alleged involvement in a scam of Rs 1,000 crore. It is alleged that the accused, along with some senior bank officials, committed a fraud of nearly Rs.1,000 crore by resorting to discounting fake cheques and bills against fake letters of credit (LC) and arranging overdrafts against non-existent LIC policies.

  4. India-s private sector bank, ICICI bank Ltd. announced its latest initiative on the eve of International Women-s day to allow its 21,000 women workforce to work from home for up to a year and even take their children on business trips.


The iWork@home initiative was taken based on a survey result which revealed that those women employees who quit job primarily did so because of child care responsibilities, and long commutes.

He was popularly known as the "Fifth Beatle" as he has signed the Beatles produced more than 700 records.He has also worked with others including Peter Sellers, Shirley Bassey, America, Cheap Trick, Jeff Beck and Celine Dion during his decade-s long career. He has won 6 Grammy Awards in various categories between years 1967 and 2007 and was named by the Guinness World Records as the most successful producer ever with more than 50 Numbers.

  2. PricewaterhouseCoopers International Network has appointed Robert E Moritz as its Global Chairman for a four-year term effective from 1stJuly 2016. He succeeds Dennis Nally, who will retire this June after a 42-year career with PwC. Moritz has been with PwC since 1985 and became a partner in 1995.

  3. The European Central Bank (ECB) has cut the interest rate today to boost liquidity and growth in the entire region and announced more stimulus measures.The ECB cut its key interest rate from existing 0.05% to 0% and cut its bank deposit rate, from (-) 0.3% to (-) 0.4%. The Central Bank has also expanded its quantitative easing program from 60 billion euro to 80 billion euro a month.


The bank now expected inflation to be just 0.1% this year much lower compared to earlier expectation of 1% but rejected possibility of deflation.

  1. The Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana with an investment of Rs 8,000 crore for three years. Under the scheme, the government will spend Rs 8000 crore to provide LPG connections to rural households. The government said that over 80 lakh people have voluntarily given up LPG subsidy as part of 'GiveItUp' campaign that the ministry initiated last year.

  2. Gujarat has been ranked at No 1 among 21 Indian states in terms of the best state in India having an investment potential as per the report published by economic think tank NCAER. Gujarat is followed by Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra where UP, Bihar, and Jharkhand are placed at the bottom of the list.

  3. The government has announced to divest 5% stake in Container Corporation of India (Concor) through the offer for sale (OFS) route in order to raise nearly Rs 1,165 crore. Concor-s OFS follows Rs 5,000-crore worth of divestment from another PSU NTPC in the previous month. Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR) is a Navratna Public sector undertaking under the Indian Ministry of Railways.

  4. Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha-s name was included in the Guinness World Records after she along with several other women participated in an initiative to set a record for -most people painting their fingernails simultaneously- on the eve of the International Women-s Day on 8thMarch. She joined with Inglot in order to achieve this record. The earlier record of 1,156 women painting nails simultaneously was created by Taiwan Nail Association at Banqiao Stadium, New Taipei City, Taiwan on 27thApril 2011.

  5. 108-feet tall idol of Lord Rishabhdeva, the first Teerthankar of Jains has entered the -Guinness World Records- as the world-s tallest Jain statue. The statue was crafted from a single stone and is located on top of Mangi Tungi Mountain near Teharabad village of North Maharashtra district.

  6. Rest of India won the Irani Cup Cricket Title after defeating 41-time Ranji Champions Mumabi by four wickets in Mumbai today. Rest of India team reached the victory target of 480 by making 482 for 6 on the fifth and final day today. This successful chase was also the best-ever run-chase in the Irani history.

  1. World Kidney Day was observed annually on the Second Thursday in March(10thMarch) in order to raise awareness about Kidney and reduce diseases related to Kidney. This is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF).

  2. Former Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Abul Gheit has been appointed as the new Secretary General of the 22-member Arab League. He will succeed Nabil El-Araby, who served as Egypt's foreign minister since the 2011 uprising. The Arab League is a regional organization of countries situated in and around North Africa with key objective is to strengthen relations between member states on various matters.

  3. Social Networking Giant Facebook Inc acquired Masquerade Technologies Inc, creator of the popular face-swapping app MSQRD in order to improve its video services.

  4. Famous Brazil musician Nana Vasconcelos passed away in Recife in North Brazil. He was suffering from lung cancer. He was 71. He won Grammy Award for 8 times for his wide instrumental range and major role in free spirited jazz and world music of the 1970s and 1980s. The American jazz magazine DownBeat named Vasconcelos percussionist of the year for seven consecutive year from 1983 to 1990.

  1. Union Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu has launched the 'clean my coach' service this week which will allow passengers to make request for a dirty coach to be swept and cleaned by sending an SMS on mobile number 58888 or by using an app or a designated website. Earlier he had announced about the scheme during his railway budget speech.


This -Swachh Rail Swachh Bharat' scheme was launched through Video Conferencing from Rail Bhawan in New Delhi/Northern Railway, Mumbai Central/Western Railway and Lucknow Jn/North Eastern Railway. A passenger can also use the android app 'Cleanmycoach Indian Railways' or webpage 'cleanmycoach.com' for logging the request which will be immediately acknowledged via SMS on mobile phone along with a code.

  1. The Union Cabinet, Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the new Hydrocarbon Exploration & Licensing Policy (HELP) in order to ensure transparency and attract global investment in the energy sector.HELP will require companies to acquire just one licence to manage all kinds of hydrocarbon reserves compared to many restrictions were placed earlier. Also this policy will use the revenue-sharing model to replace the previously followed practice of contractors sharing the profit with the government after recovering costs.

  2. The Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha passed the landmark Real Estate Bill which aims to secure the interests of homebuyers and developers in equal measure and remove corruption and inefficiency from the real estate sector.As per the bill, a regulator will be established in each state to regulate all the housing projects to protect both the buyers and sellers. Also all the new housing schemes need to be registered with the regulator.

  3. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have passed the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Bill, 2016in order to provide necessary requirement to transfer government subsidies and benefits to targeted people.The bill does not make Aadhaar card compulsory in line with Supreme Court judgement.

  4. The Union government has appointed ex-Supreme Court judge Balbir Singh Chauhan as the chairperson of the 21st Law Commission. The position was lying vacant since its constitution in September 2015.The Law Commission of India is an executive body which works to effect legal reforms. The Union Ministry of Law & Justice has urged the commission to specifically study the usage of provisions under Section 124A (Sedition) of the IPC.

  5. Tezpur Universitywon the annual Visitor-s Award for the Best University. Rakesh Bhatnagar and the Molecular Parasitology Group of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)won the Visitor-s Awards for Research and Innovation respectively.President Pranab Mukherjee will present Visitor-s Awards for 2016 to the winners at a function to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 14thMarch 2016 as part of the Festival of Innovations.

  6. Former TCS Chairman S Ramadorai has retired from the position of chairman and public interest directorship of BSE. He was appointed as public interest director and chairman of the board on in March 2010 and retired in March 2016 after serving BSE for six years.

  7. Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairman U K Sinha announced that all willful loan defaulters will be disqualified from board positions at listed companies as per new rules. Also willful loan defaulters will be barred from fund raising, taking positions at listed firms, from setting up market entities like mutual funds.

  8. Domestic rating agency Crisil has projected India-s GDP growth at 7.9% for the current financial year 2016-17 due to hope of proper monsoon and implementation of revival measures by the Indian government. As per Crisil, a normal monsoon season this year can lead to a 4% growth in agriculture on lower base effect after lower than average Monsoon in previous two financial years.

  9. Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has been appointed as the brand ambassador of Reebok India along with a new campaign of the brand titled -Be More Human- which was released on the -International Women-s Day-.

  1. A Palestinian primary school teacher from a refugee camp, Hanan Al Hroub, won one million dollar Global Teacher Prize for her outstanding contribution to the profession.Hroub runs the Samiha Khalil High School in Al-Bireh, Palestine which helped her defeate nine other finalists from around the world, including India-s Robin Chaurasiya to win the award.


Hroub uses a specialist approach in her school developed by her and specified in her book 'We Play and Learn' to overcome tense environments of the region under the shadow of the Israel-Palestine conflict. The Global Teacher Prize carries USD 1 million award presented annually to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to their profession.

  1. 4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves was inaugurated on 14thMarch at Lima in Peru and it will be held till 17thMarch to address different issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Post 2015 Development Agenda. Different experts from the field of biosphere reserves and representatives of governments, local communities, UN agencies, NGOs, academic institutions, and organizations working with the MAB Programme from across the world are participating in the event.

  1. India has successfully test-fired indigenously built nuclear-capable intermediate range Agni-I ballistic missile from the launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island (Wheeler Island).The missile covered 700 km distance within 9 minutes and 36 seconds and hit the specified target.


Agni-I was developed by Advanced Systems Laboratory, the premier missile development laboratory of DRDO in collaboration with Defence Research Development Laboratory and Research Centre Imarat and integrated by Bharat Dynamics Limited, Hyderabad.

  1. Kerala Tourism-s new campaign on responsible tourism named as -New Worlds- won the prestigious Golden City Gate Award at the world-s leading travel trade show ITB in Berlin. The campaign contains three short films directed by reputed Malayalam filmmaker Anwar Rasheed won the silver prize of this year-s Das Golden Stadttor or Golden City Gate, dubbed as the Oscar of Tourism communication, at the ITB.

  2. Famous Indian scholar and plant physiologist H Deep Saini has been appointed the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Canberra. He has received a number of honours including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contribution in the field of physiology.

  3. India-s Index of Industrial Production or IIPcontracted for the third consecutive month in January due to sharp drop in manufacturing sector performance.The Index of Industrial Production contracted 1.5% in January 2016 compared to 2.6% growth in the same month last year. For the April-January period of the current financial year, IIP grew by 2.7% between April and January 2016.


Manufacturing sector performance contracted 2.8% in January 2016 compared to growth of 3.4% a year ago and both mining and electricity sectors grew 1.2% and 6.6% respectively in the same month.

  1. India-s retail inflation, measured by Consumer Price Index, dropped to 3-month low of 5.18% in February compared to 5.69% in previous month of January.Retail food inflation dropped to 5.3% in the same month compared to 6.85% in January. Urban inflation in February stood at 4.30% compared to 4.81% in January while rural inflation stood at 5.97% in February compared to 6.48% in January.

  2. India-s overall Inflation, measured by the Wholesale Price Index, stood at the negative zone for the 16thconsecutive months. Overall Inflation stood at (-) 0.91% in February compared to (-) 0.90% in January. Wholesale food inflation dropped to 3.2% in February and inflation in manufactured products category stood at 0.3% in the same month.

  3. Services team won the Santosh Trophy National Football Championships title after defeating Maharashtra by 2-1 in the final match played at SEC Railway Stadium in Nagpur. Santosh Trophy was started in 1941 and is a popular annual Indian football tournament in which different states and government institutions participates.

  1. Myanmar's Parliament has elected Htin Kyaw as the country's first Civilian President after more than 50 years of military rule.Htin Kyaw is a close ally of Aung San Suu Kyi, whose National League for Democracy (NLD) party won the historic election held in November last year.


Htin Kyaw won with 360 of the 652 votes in the two Houses of Parliament while his opponent Myint Swe, nominated by the military, received 213 votes.

  1. The American mathematician Lloyd S. Shapley, who shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economic Science with Harvard professor Alvin E Roth for his work on game theory, passed away. He was 92. He was considered one of the fathers of game theory which explains the choices that competitors make in a situation that requires strategic thinking. He introduced the concept of "Shapley Value" using which the benefits of cooperation can be proportionally divided among participants based on their relative contribution.

  2. China-s Lin Dan won the prestigious 2016 All England Badminton men-s singles title after defeating Chinese teammate Tian Houwei by 21-9, 21-10.It was his overall sixth All England badminton title after winning the same in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2012.


At the same time, Japanese Nozomi Okuhara won her first All England Badminton women-s singles title after defeating two-time champion Wang Shixian of China 21-11, 16-21, 21-19 in the final match.

  1. Pope Francis said in Vatican City today that Mother Teresa, Nobel Prize winner for Peace, would be declared a saint of the Roman Catholic Church at a ceremony on 4th September this year. He made the announcement at a meeting of Cardinals to give the final approval to several sainthood causes.


Mother Teresa was beatified in 2003 by the Late Pope John Paul after a miracle of curing a woman of tumor was approved by the Vatican. The Pope cleared the way for sainthood last year when he recognized a second miracle attributed to Mother Teresa.

  1. Mahindra & Mahindra Chairman and Managing Director Anand Mahindra was conferred with the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour), France's highest civilian award, this week for national and international achievements and initiatives as the head of the Mahindra Group. He has also helped to improve partnerships between French and Indian industries.

  2. Mumbai based Non-banking financial company Altico Capital India has appointed former HSBC India head Naina Lal Kidwai as an independent non-executive director.Naina lal Kidwai retired as executive director on the board of HSBC Asia Pacific and chairperson of HSBC India last year. Currently she is on the boards of Larsen & Toubro Limited, Advent Private Equity, Nestle SA, Cipla Ltd and Max Financial Services Ltd etc.

  3. India-s total exports dropped by 5.66% in February 2016 to USD 20.73 billion from USD 21.98 billion in the same month last year due to weak global demand. This is the fifteenth straight monthly decline. Total imports also dropped by 5.03% to USD 27.28 billion in the same month due to drop in Gold and steel imports. The trade deficit during the month dropped to USD 6.54 billion.


Fall in imports in February was mostly due to a drop in import of gold and iron and steel. Gold import dropped sharply by 29.49% to USD 1.39 billion due to a decline in gold prices. Import of iron and steel fell 12.46% in the same month to USD 1.07 billion.

The World Consumer Right Day was observed on 15thMarch across the world to raise global awareness about consumer rights.This marks the day in 1962 when former USA President John F Kennedy addressed the US Congress on the issue of consumer rights. The 2016 theme on World Consumer Rights Day is "antibiotics off the menu".

  2. Denmark has been ranked as the world's happiest country, while Burundi is ranked as the least happy nation, as per the fourth World Happiness Report released on 16thMarch. Denmark topped the list in the first report, in 2012, and again in 2013. Denmark is followed by Iceland, Norway, Finland, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia and Sweden. At the bottom of the list, Burundi was preceded by Syria, Togo, Afghanistan, Benin, Rwanda, Guinea, Liberia, Tanzania and Madagascar.

  3. Sushila Karki, the senior most of the judges in the Nepal-s Supreme Court has been nominated for Chief Justice Post by the judicial council chaired by the Prime Minister, K P Oli. Post this, she will become Nepal-s first Women Chief Justice. She will succeed Current Chief justice, Kalyan Shreshtha who will retire soon.

  4. Malaysian Actress Michelle Yeoh has been appointed as United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador. In her new role, she will focus on raising awareness and mobilising support for the recently launched Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She is well known internationally for her roles in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies. She was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in 2000 for her movie Hidden Dragon.


At the same time, American actress Ashley Judd was also appointed by the United Nations as their latest Goodwill Ambassador. Beside acting career of more than two decades, she is well known for her global humanitarian efforts and political activism.

  1. United States Central Bank the Federal Reserve has kept its interest rate unchanged during its monetary policy review meeting announcement yesterday due to impact of the global slowdown and turmoil in world markets. The Fed Reserve has also cut its outlook for the US economy and gave a picture that is less bullish than many had expected for the American economy.


The Federal Reserve also announced that it will probably raise rates later this year in small increments if USA economic growth and job market outlook improves.

  1. The London Stock Exchange Group (LSE) and Deutsche Boerse have announced their merger this week which will create one of the world-s largest exchange companies with a combined value of about 21 billionpounds. As per the agreement, LSE shareholders will own 45.6% of the new holding company, while Deutsche Boerse shareholders will own 54.4%.

  2. The United Nations (UN) has suspended Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova as Goodwill Ambassador of the organisation after she was tested positive with banned drug, as announced by New York based UN Development Programme (UNDP). She had announced earlier this month that she tested positive for a drug called meldonium, at the Australian Open earlier in January 2016.

  3. Television magician Paul Daniels passed away. He was 77. He was suffering from brain tumor.  He is famous for his television series The Paul Daniels Magic Show, which ran on the BBC from 1979 to 1994.

  4. The Man Booker Prize-winning British author and art historian Anita Brookner passed away this week.She wrote more than 25 books and won the Booker Prize for fiction in 1984 for her novel Hotel du Lac. She was the first woman to be the Slade Professor of Fine Art at the University of Cambridge from 1967 to 1968.

  1. India has been ranked at 118thposition as per World Happiness Index, as per the fourth World Happiness Report released on 16thMarch. Its neighbors have secured better ranks which include China at 83rd, Pakistan 1t 92nd, Bangladesh at 110th etc. Among BRIC nations, Brazil secured best rank at 17th, followed by Russia at 56th. The happiness ranking was based on individual responses to a global poll conducted by Gallup.

  2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been included in the list of the most influential people on the Internet, as per TIME magazine which described him as an -Internet star-who often uses social media to -conduct diplomacy-. The list includes US presidential hopeful Donald Trump, reality TV star Kim Kardashian and her husband Kayne West, author J K Rowling, former Olympic athlete Caitlyn Jenner and soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo.

  3. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join the ranks of famous global leaders at Madame Tussauds in London, Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok, as per the announcement made by the world famous wax museumdescribing him as a -hugely important figure in world politics-. The Prime Minister had given the museum-s team of artists and experts a sitting at his residence in New Delhi for the same purpose as well.

  4. Central government has announced a Scheme of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) in order to provide financial support to State Higher Education Plan (SHEP) proposals approved by the State Higher Education Councils (SHECs).Currently 115 Universities and 1218 colleges have been approved by RUSA PAB for infrastructure grants. The key aim is to ensure adequate availability of quality faculty in all higher educational institutions and ensure capacity building at all levels to achieve the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) target of 25.2% by the end of 12th Plan and 32% by the end of 13th Plan.

  5. AirAsia India announced that Amar Abrol, former CEO of Tune Money, will succeed Mittu Chandilya as the CEO of AirAsia India with effect from 1stApril 2016. Mittu Chandilya will continue until the end of April in order to ensure a smooth transition of the CEO role.


Amar Abrol joined Tune Money in 2013 after spending 19 years with American Express including leadership roles in multiple markets including Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK, India and Malaysia.

  1. India-s largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel acquired Videocon Telecom for Rs 4,428 crore which will help the former to get the rights to use 2X5 MHz of spectrum in the 1800 band allocated to Videocon by the government in April 2013.Post this deal, Bharti-s 4G coverage will go up to 19 circles from the current 15 circles.

  2. Famous Shehnai exponent Ustad Ali Ahmad Hussain Khan passed away in Kolkata. He was 77. He was suffering from kidney related problem and hospitalized from the past few days.  He was one of the best players of the instrument after the legendary Bismillah Khan. He was awarded with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2009 and Bangabhushan award in 2012 of West Bengal government.

  1. The European Union (EU) has finalized a deal with Turkey, as a part of whichall migrants arriving in Greece will be sent back to Turkey. For this the EU will provide 3-billion euros to Turkey for the same purpose.

  2. British Professor Sir Andrew Wiles was awarded with themathematics- most prestigious prizeAbel Prize this week for solving problem that baffled experts for more than 350 years. He was awarded for his proof of Fermat-s Last Theorem. Formulated by French mathematician Pierre de Fermat in 1637, it had long been the math world-s most famous and confusing theorem till Wiles proved the same in 1994.

  3. Bangladesh government has appointed former finance secretary and Sonali Bank chairman Fazle Kabir as governor of the Bangladesh Central Bank for four years. He succeeds Atiur Rahman who resigned over the recent cyber heist of USD 81 million.

  4. Singapore's Changi Airport was voted as the best airport at the 2016 World Airport Awards for the fourth consecutive time, as per the survey conducted by aviation research firm Skytrax and the decision was based on the votes of the travelers.

  1. The Central Government has cut the interest rates payable on small savings including Public Provident Fund, PPF and Kisan Vikas Patra KVP in order to align them closer to market rates. The interest rate on PPF scheme will be cut from 8.7% to 8.1% and interest rate on KVP will be cut from 7.8% from 8.7% effective from 1st of April.


The interest rate on Post Office savings has been retained at 4%. Five-year Monthly Income scheme interest rate was reduced to 7.8% from 8.4% and interest rate on Girl-child saving scheme, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana has been cut to 8.6% from 9.2%.

  1. Surat has been ranked as the cleanest railway station in the country, as per the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) survey published this week. Surat is followed by Rajkot and Bilaspur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi-s constituency Varanasi's railway station has been ranked poorly in terms of cleanliness as it is ranked at 65thplace among 75 A-1 railway stations surveyed.

  2. Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu was selected for the Skoch Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to inclusive growth and in poverty alleviation, as announced by the Skoch group.At the same time, the Skoch Challenger of the year Award was conferred on IT Minister K T Rama Rao in the start-up India category for establishing the path breaking tech incubator T-Hub.

  3. Infosys Foundation, the philanthropic arm of IT Services Company, Infosys signed a deal with Asia Heart Foundation to enable the adoption of robotics in healthcare. The foundation has granted Rs. 8 crore to Asia Heart Foundation which will enable them to do robotic surgeries with the purchase of high end equipment, the IS 3000 da Vinci Si system.

  4. India-s largest IT Services Company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) announced a three year partnership with the Virgin Money London Marathon to enhance the digital experience delivered to marathon participants. As a part of the deal, TCS will become the race-s Official Technology Partner for the 2016, 2017 and 2018 events.

  5. Suresh Senapaty, Ex-Wipro CFO has been appointed as the new Chairman by Honeywell Automation India Ltd (HAIL) this week. In his new role, he will be responsible for contributing to HAIL-s overall strategy and to provide counsel on corporate governance, business, and financial matters. He succeeds Mr L.Rao.

  6. Global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has appointed S Sridhar as its new Managing Director (MD) for its Indian operation with immediate effect for a period of five years. S. Sridhar has been working with Pfizer from past 10 years. He joined the as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in 2003 and he was appointed as the Executive Director on the Board in 2013.

  1. International Day of Forests, also known as World Forestry Day is observed today (21stMarch) across the world in order to raise awareness and importance of Forest to balance natural life on the face of earth. The theme of the 2016 International Day of Forests is -forests and water-.


The World Forestry Day was established at the 23rd General Assembly of European Confederation of Agriculture in 1971 it was established by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in November 2012.

  1. The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has appointed Red, the leader of the -Angry Birds- mobile game characters as brand ambassador for climate change. This was done as a part of a UN campaign launched in partnership with the globally renowned characters to make a direct link between tackling climate change and people's happiness.

  2. The US President Barack Obama has named the General Lori Robinson to head the U.S. combatant command, becomes the first woman to head this position. Once approved by the Senate, US Air Force General Lori Robinson will be the new North com chief and will be responsible for any missile threats against the homeland. Currently she leads US air forces in the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) and Executive Director of Pacific Air Combat Operations Staff since 2014.

  3. FC Barcelona-s and Argentina striker Lionel Messi has been named as global ambassador of Chinese Networking and mobile giant Huawei.He was chosen as the company believes that he and Huawai make "a perfect fit" as both "are always pursuing not success but challenges to be better".

  4. Bangladesh left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny and pacer Taskin Ahmed have been suspended from bowling with immediate effect by ICC after an independent assessment found their bowling actions to be illegal. Both the bowlers underwent assessments in Chennai last week after being reported with suspected bowling action during first round match against Netherlands earlier this month.

  1. One of Mumbai oldest colleges, the Wilson College has adopted the Charni Road station to keep it clean as part of the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year. The college took the decision in response to the appeal made by the Governor to colleges and universities to adopt a railway stations or any other public place nearest to the institution and to take care of its cleanliness and upkeep.

  2. India-s current account deficit narrowed to 1.3% of GDP in the third quarter of the current financial year 2015-16 compared to 1.5% in the same quarter last year, as per data published by the RBI.The drop in CAD was mainly due to a lower trade deficit of USD 34 billion during the same quarter, compared to USD 38.6 billion in the year ago quarter.

  3. The Central Government has relaxed FDI norms for the insurance sector by allowing 49% FDI in domestic insurers without prior approval in order to bring more foreign investment in the country. Earlier the FDI cap was 26% without approval and an approval was required for up to 49% FDI.

  4. Fashion designer RituBeri has been appointed as the advisor to the union government's statutory body Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) for promotion of khadi across Indian and overseas markets.

  1. The World Water Day is observed today (22ndMarch) across the world in order to raise awareness and importance of water in our life. The theme of 2016 was 'Better water, better jobs'which aims to highlight that management of water resources can create quality jobs as almost half of the world's working population (about 1.5 billion people) work in water-related sectors.


As per UN data, nearly 650 million people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water.

  1. Former CEO of Intel Corp Andrew Stephen "Andy" Grove passed away this week. He was 79. He played an important role in making Intel into the world's largest chip company in his more than 3 decades old career. He transformed Intel from a memory chip-manufacturing firm into the maker of microprocessors, the major electronic component of computers. He was honoured with TIME magazine's Man of the Year title in 1997.

  2. Ali Mohamed Shein won the presidential elections in Zanzibar-a semi-autonomous region in Tanzania to be re-elected as the President of the region. He secured 91.4% of the votes in the re-run of the election.

India will host the 8th annual Summit of BRICS scheduled to be held from 15thto 16thOctober 2016 in Goa, as announced by the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today. India assumed chairmanship of BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) from Russia on 15th February this year till 31st December 2016.

  2. Famous Malayalam author and short story writer M Sukumaran has been selected for the annual CV Kunhuraman Sahithya Puraskaram by the CV Kunhuraman Foundation. Earlier he was awarded with the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award in 1976 for his work Marichittillathavarude Smarakangal.

  3. Edelweiss Asset Management acquired JP Morgan-s mutual fund business in India, which has assets worth over Rs. 7,000 crore. With this JPMC becomes the 11th foreign major to exit Indian mutual fund industry in last eight years. As a part of the deal, Edelweiss will acquire all onshore fund schemes managed by JP Morgan AMC India including country-based onshore mutual fund business and the international fund of funds. Post-acquisition, the assets under management (AUM) of the combined entity will be Rs. 8,757 crore.

  4. Indian badminton playerHS Prannoy won the men's singles title in the 2016 Swiss Open after defeating German Marc Zwiebler by 21-18 21-15 in the final match. This is the second consecutive time, an Indian won the men's singles title at the Swiss Open. China's He Binghiao won the women's singles title after defeating Wang Yihan in the final match.

  1. The Cabinet has approved implementation of rural housing scheme of Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY) for construction of pucca houses to all houseless and households living in dilapidated houses.Under the scheme, one crore houses will be built in next three years and Rs 1.2 lakh financial assistance will be given per unit in plain areas and Rs 1.3 lakh in hilly and difficult areas.


The cabinet also cleared additional 6% Dearness Allowance for central government employees and Dearness Relief for pensioners from 1st January this year. This decision will benefit crores of central government employees and pensioners.

  1. HL Dattu, the Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and former Chief Justice of India has been appointed as a member of the International Coordinating Committee of NHRIs (ICC) Bureau in Geneva.

World TB Day was obsereved on 24thMarch every year to raise awareness about the disease which is causing the deaths of nearly one-and-a-half million people each year.The theme of year 2016 was "Unite to End TB". It remembers the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch first announced that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus.

  2. 25thMarch 25 was observed as the International Day to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice in the current world. Also the day is used to remember the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade to remember those people who had suffered and died due to brutal slavery system. The theme for 2016 was," Remember Slavery: Celebrating the Heritage and Culture of the African Diaspora and its Roots."

  3. Nepaland Azerbaijan became a dialogue partner of the Beijing-based regional security grouping, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).Nepal was officially made a dialogue partner after a deal was signed during the Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli-s visit to China. Azerbaijan also signed a similar deal to become a SCO dialogue partner.

  4. Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has announced his retirement from International Cricket after completing ongoing ICC World Twenty20 cup. This will end his glorious 14-year old long career. He has already retired from Test cricket.


He scored 3,731 runs in 59 Tests and 5,757 runs in 190 ODIs and took 75 and 168 wickets in the two formats respectively. In 56 T20Is so far, Watson has scored 1400 runs and took 46 wickets.

  1. German formula one driver Nico Rosberg of Mercedes teamwon the 2016 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prixheld at Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Australia on 20thMarch. This is his 15th Formula One victory. Britain-s Lewis Hamilton secured second and Germany-s Sebastian Vettel secured third place in the race.

  2. Dutch footballing legend Johan Cruyff passed away this week after suffering from cancer. He is considered one of the greatest players of all time, who led the Netherlands team to the 1974 World Cup final. He also won the Ballon d'Ors for three times.

  3. Famous Comedian Garry Shandling, best known for his faux docudrama and the show "It's Garry Shandling's" passed away due to heart attack this week. He was 60. He performed standup comedy and became a regular guest host of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

  3. Retired Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court Justice Permod Kohli has been appointed as the Chairman of Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT).He will be in charge for either 5 years or till he attains retirement age of 68 years whichever is earlier.

  4. Kadhaprasangam maestro and actor VD Rajappan passed away in Kottayam this week.He was 70. He was a famous 'Kadhaprasangam' (story telling) artiste and Comedy Malayalam film actor.

  5. World-s largest bicycle manufacturer by volume, Hero Cycles acquired 60% stake in one of Sri Lanka's leading bicycle manufactures BSH Ventures in order to improve its global presence. This is also Hero Cycle-s third acquisition within last 6 months after acquiring UK-based Avocet Sports and Firefox Bikes.

  1. Syrian Army with support from Russian Air Forces have regained control of the ancient city of Palmyra from Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group in a significant win. The ancient city of Palmyra is a UNESCO designated World Heritage site and home to some of the world-s most magnificent ancient ruins.


ISIS had taken complete control of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra in May 2015 after which they had destroyed some of the important ancient ruins.

  1. Japan-s NTT Data Corp announced its acquisition of Dell-s information technology consulting division for over USD 3 billion in order to expand its presence in North America. NTT Data Corp, one of the world-s largest technology services companies, is currently looking to expand in US market with different acquisitions.

  1. President-s Rule has been imposed in Uttarakhand a day before the crucial trust vote scheduled to be held in the state assembly for the Harish Rawat government. Earlier the Cabinet had recommended the imposition of Central rule in the state which was formally approved by the President Pranab Mukherjee.

  2. The Haryana state government has approved the Jat reservation bill today one day after the Akhil Bhartiya Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (ABJASS), which spearheaded the Jat quota stir in February this year,threatened to resume the agitation if its demands are not met by the end of this month. The Haryana cabinet cleared the bill that proposes to provide reservation to five communities, including the politically-dominant Jat community.

  3. Prime Minister Narendra Modihas announced that India would host the FIFA under-17 World Cup next year in his monthly radio programme Mann ki Baat. The Union cabinet chaired by him has recently approved the proposal.

  4. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been named among the world-s 50 greatest leaders 2016 published by Fortune magazine as he secured 42ndposition in the list. He is the only Indian to be ranked among 50 global leaders.


The list is topped by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Jeff Bezos is followed by Angela Merkel, Aung San Suu Kyi, Pope Francis, Tim Cook, John Legend, Christiana Figueres, Paul Ryan, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sheikh Hasina.

  1. Indian origin law professor Surya Deva has been appointed as an adviser on human rights and multinationals and businesses by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). With this appointment, he will be a member of the 4 member working group on the issue of human rights, transnational corporations and other business enterprises.

  2. An Indian American Nandita Bakshi has been appointed as the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bank of the West which is a unit of French bank BNP Paribas with effective from 1stApril 2016.She will succeed Michael Shepherd who has been appointed as chairman of the BNP Paribas USA. She won the New England News -Woman of the Year- award in 2002.

  3.  Central Government has announced the winner of the 63rdNational film Awards today. Amitabh Bachchan got Best actor award for his role in Piku and Kangana Ranaut got the Best Actress awards Tanu Weds Manu Returns. SS Rajamouli-s big budget film Baahubali won the Best Film and Sanjay Leela Bhansali won in the best director category for his period drama, Bajirao Mastani.


This is 4th National award for Amitabh Bachchan who had earlier won for Agneepath, Paa and Black. This is Kangana-s third national award after Queen and Fashion (Supporting Actress category).

  1. India-s forex reserves increased by USD 2.5 billion to reach a record high of USD 355.9 billion for the week that ended on 18thMarch, as per weekly data published by the Reserve Bank of India.

  2. Deepika and PR Sreejesh have been awarded with the Dhruv Batra Player of the Year Award for Women and Men respectively at the Hockey India (HI) Annual Awards. Late Captain Shankar Laxman won the Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award, Mr. Baldev Singh won for Invaluable Contribution, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy won for Outstanding Achievement.

  1. The Central Government has approved foreign domestic investments (FDI) of 100% in the marketplace-based model of the e-commerce sector in its latest notification published today. Marketplace based model is an arrangement where e-commerce companies provide an online platform to other vendors to sell their products.


Global e-commerce majors such as Amazon and eBay as well as domestic players with foreign investments such as Flipkart and Snapdeal, which have been operating through the marketplace model, can look for more investment post this notification.

  1. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's recommendation to make 112 the national emergency number for all emergency services including police, ambulances, and fire brigade was accepted by the Telecom Commission. With this approval, this new emergency number will be rolled out in coming months.

  2. Legendary playback singer of South Indian languages, P Susheela has entered the Guinness World Records for recording highest number of songs in several languages in a career spanning over half a century.She has reportedly recorded up to 17,695 solo, duet and chorus backed songs in over six Indian languages since the 1960s, till 28thJanuary 2016. She has sung songs in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and other Indian languages.

  3. Indian Pharma Company Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd has acquired 14 established prescription brands from Novartis AG and Novartis Pharma AG in Japan, for USD 293 million in order to expand business in Japanese market.

  4. Indian Biker Pallavi Fauzdar, became the first solo woman to ride across the Mana Pass in Uttarakhand which helped her to make a Limca book record. She rode to an altitude of 5,638 m (18,497 ft) above sea level, on the border between India and Tibet, which is also considered to be one of the most difficult biking trails.

  5. Indian batsman Virat Kohli secured No 1 rank in the ICC T20 batsmen rankings published today after his match winning performance against Pakistan and Australia recently. At the same time, India retained No 1 rank in the T20 ranking. West Indies' Samuel Badree has displaced Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to return to the number-one position in the bowlers- ranking.

UNICEF has launched a series of animated films named as -Unfairy Tales- to help frame positive perceptions towards the tens of millions of children and young people on the move globally.These three animations -true stories of the flight of children from conflict - explain the horror behind why they fled. The Unfairy Tales are part of an initiative, actofhumanity, emphasising that children are children, no matter where they come from, and that every child has rights and deserves a fair chance.

India-s first indigenous composites sonar dome, a ship-s underwater eyes and ears, was flagged off by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikartoday in Pune which will be delivered to Mazgaon docks in Mumbai. The sonar dome is designed and produced by a Defence and Research Development Organisation (DRDO) labin Pune.

  3. GVK Power and Infrastructure Ltd plans to sell its 33% stake in Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) to Fairfax India Holdings Corp owned by India-born Canadian billionaire Prem Watsafor around Rs 2100 crore. Post this deal, GVK-s debt will be declined by Rs 2,000 crore which will further reduce its annual Interest payment.

  1. The 4th Nuclear Security Summit will begin in Washington today in which leaders of about 50 countries and representatives of five international organisations will participate to discuss a gamut of issues pertaining to nuclear security.The two-day summit will highlight achievements and commitments of several countries towards safeguarding nuclear devices and technologies and reducing the threat of nuclear terrorism.Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached to Washington from Brussels today to take part in the summit.

  2. Global Credit rating agency Standard and Poor-s (S&P) has maintained China's sovereign credit rating at AA- but cut its outlook to negative from stable as it believes the Chinese Government's reform agenda is on track but likely to proceed more slowly than expected. The downgrade follows a similar move by ratings agency Moody's Investor Services earlier this month.

  3. England reached the final of the ICC World T20 after defeating New Zealand by seven wickets in the first semifinal match held in Delhi yesterday. England will face West Indies in the final match to be held on Sunday. Both the teams won T20 world cup once earlier.


In the other Semifinal match played today, West Indies defeated India by 3 wickets to be qualified for the WT20 final for the second time. Virat Kohli-s 89 of 43 balls innings went in vein as West Indies successfully chased 192 run targets in 19.4 overs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel have launched Asia's biggest telescope which was built by the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) with the assistance of Belgian.The telescope with a mirror of 3.6 m diameter has been located at a height of 2,500 metres at Devasthal in Nainital district to get a clear view of the sky.

  2. Bihar state Assemblyhas unanimously passed the Bihar Excise (Amendment) Bill 2016 to enforce the ban on country made liquor from 1stApril this year.The 1915 liquor Bill was amended to incorporate stricter penal provisions, including death penalty for manufacturers and distributors of illicit liquor in the event of a hooch tragedy. This will be followed by complete ban of liquor in the state as promised by Nitish Kumar during his poll campaign.

  3. India-s eight core sector industries grew by 5.7% in February compared to same month last year. This is the highest growth rate of the core sectors in last 15 months due to steep rise in production of fertiliser, cement and refinery products. The eight core industries which are cement, coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel and electricity account for nearly 38% of the Index of Industrial Production.


For the April-February period of the current financial year 2015-16, the eight industries grew by 2.3% compared to 5% in the same period last financial year.

  1. Indian IT Services Company Wipro Limited has appointed Patrick Dupuis to its Board of Directors, with effective from 1stApril 2016.He currently serves as the Senior Vice President for Simplicity, Quality and Productivity at Global technology platform and payments leader, PayPal Holdings, Inc.

  2. Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA) has appointed Jitendra Jagota as the new Chairman of its new Executive Committee at the General Body Meeting held in New Delhi. He is currently working as the Director Legal and Government Affairs, Avon Beauty Products India Pvt.
