  1. Microsoft Founder Bill Gates has been ranked as the richest man in the world for the second consecutive year by business magazine Forbes in its annual ranking of global billionaires. Bill Gates (worth of USD 79.2 billion) secured No1 rank followed by Carlos Slim (worth of USD 77 billion),Warren Buffett (worth of USD 72.7 billion).

As per Forbes, there are a record 1,826 billionaires in the world which is an increase of 181 in the past 12 months. Bill Gates has now been ranked at No 1 position 16 times in last 21 years.

  1. Indian-origin lawyer Kannan Ramesh has been appointed as Judicial Commissioner to Singapore's Supreme Court bench for 2 years. With this appointment, he will quit from other positions including being a member of Singapore Academy of Law's Law Reform Committee and a local telecommunications company M1 Board.

  2. Global tech company Hewlett-Packard has announced to acquire wi-fi network systems maker Aruba for USD 3 billion. This acquisition will help HP tocompete in the university and office campus networking market.

  3. English football club Chelsea defeated Tottenham Hotspurs by 2-0 in the final match to win the English League Cup trophy. With this win, Chelsea won English League Cups five times, matching Aston Villa for second-most behind Liverpool's eight.

  4. Former New Zealand cricket captain Martin David Crowe was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. With this, he became the third New Zealand cricketer after Sir Richard Hadlee and Debbie Hockley to be included in the Hall of Fame. Also, he has become the 79th cricketer to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.

  1. PDP (People-s Democratic Party) party leader Mufti Mohammed Sayeed was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on 1stMarch. He is leading a historic alliance with the BJP, which has become part of a government in the state for the first time.

  2. Jagmohan Dalmiya has been elected as the new President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.He was elected unopposed at the board's 85th annual General Meeting held in Mumbai today. He will head the board for next three years.

At the same time, Anurag Thakur was elected as Secretary, Amitabh Choudhary was elected as Joint Secretary and Anirudh Chaudhry was elected as Treasurer of the richest cricket board in the world. The Vice-Presidents elected were ML Nehru (representing north zone), G Ganga Raju (south), ?Gautam Roy (east), TC Mathew (west) and CK Khanna (central).

  1. Central Government has appointed Arun Singh, currently its Ambassador to France, as its next ambassador to the US. Arun Singh, a 1979-batch IFS officer, will succeed S Jaishankar, who was appointed as Foreign Secretary on January this year. Earlier, he had served as ambassador to Israel (2005-2008) and served as deputy chief of mission in Washington (2008-2013).

  2. FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) has appointed famous economist Arvind Virmani as the new Economic mentor for Ficci-s public policy and economic work.Earlier he served as the country-s Chief Economic Advisor and Principal Advisor in the Planning Commission.

  3. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has given Executive Director of Bank of Baroda Ranjan Dhawan additional charge of the Managing Director & CEO of Bank of Baroda for a period of three months. Gauri Shankar, Executive Director, was given the additional charge of Managing Director & CEO of Punjab National Bank for a period for three months last month.

Previous MD of Bank of Baroda SS Mundra became the Reserve Bank of India Governor on July 31, 2014 and former MD of Punjab National Bank KR Kamath demitted the office with effect from October 28, 2014 on completion of his tenure of five years.

  1. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) limit in the insurance sector has been increased to 49% from existing limit of 26%, as per the Commerce and Industry Ministry. This follows the approval given by the Union Cabinet for the promulgation of an ordinance hiking the FDI limit in the insurance sector to 49% in December last year after it failed to get approval in the Parliament.

  2. India-s core sector growth, consisting of eight core sectors, coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity, grew by 1.8% in January due to negative growth in Crude Oil and natural gas sectors. This is the lowest core sector growth in at least 13 months. Core sector growth stood at 3.7% in January last year and 2.4% in previous month of December 2014.

During April-January period of current financial year, the eight sectors grew by 4.1% compared to 4% growth in the same period of the previous fiscal year.

  1. India-s manufacturing activity grew at its slowest pace in five months in February due to slowdown in factory orders. The HSBC- Markit compiled Purchasing Managers- Index for manufacturing sector fell for the second consecutive month to 51.2 in Februarycompared to 52.9 in January. A reading above 50 indicates growth in the sector.

  2. Online cab booking company Ola has acquired its competitor TaxiForSure for USD 200 million in a cash and equity deal. Post this deal, both the companies will continue to operate as separate companies.The founders of TaxiForSure, Aprameya Radhakrishna and Raghunandan G will contribute in an advisory role for a certain period.

TaxiForSure currently operates in 47 cities with over 15,000 vehicles registered on its platform. Ola which is already the market leader in the personal transportation space has over 1-lakh vehicles on its platform.

  1. Election Commission has launched National Electoral Roll Purification and Authentication Programme, NERPAP across the country today. Its main aim is to bring out a totally error-free and authenticated electoral roll within the country. As a part of this programme, Electoral Photo Identity Card, EPIC data of electors will be linked with Aadhar data for authentication and image quality of electors will also be improved.

  2. The Government of Maharashtra has banned the beef in the state. As per the new rule, if a person is found to be selling beef or in possession of it, he can be jailed for five years and fined up to Rs 10,000.

  3. The government has appointed former Panchajanya editor Baldev Sharma as the new chairman of the National Book Trust on 2ndMarch.He succeeds incumbent A. Sethumadhavan. Panchajanya is an Indian weekly newspaper published by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Hindi. It was launched by RSS pracharak Deendayal Upadhyaya in 1948 in Lucknow.

  4. The Central government and the Reserve Bank of India have signed an agreement on Monetary Policy Framework in which the government has set a target for RBI to bring down inflation below 6% level by January 2016.If the RBI fails to meet the target, it will have to report to the government the reasons for the failure to achieve the target, what remedial action it proposes to take and estimate of the time period within which the target would be achieved.

The agreement was recommended by the RBI's Urjit Patel committee with the aim to smoothen the monetary policy scene. This framework will be monitored by the RBI which will help to come up with a modern monetary policy to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex economy.
RBI cuts repo rate by 25bps in a surprise move today; Sensex crosses 30000 mark
In a surprise move, RBI Governor Dr Raghuram Rajan has cut key policy rates by 25 bps with immediate effect today due to improved fiscal condition of Indian economy. Repo rate, the rate at which RBI lends money to banks for the short term, was reduced by 25 bps to 7.50% while the Reverse Repo Rate, the rate at which RBI borrows money from banks, was cut by 25 bps to 6.50%. The RBI had cut interest rate last time in January 2015. The cash reserve ratio for banks has been kept unchanged at 4%. The marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the bank rate was cut to 8.50% with immediate effect after this rate cut today.
The RBI has kept the statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) of scheduled commercial banks unchanged at 21.5% of their net demand and time liabilities (NDTL). Statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) refers amount that the commercial banks require to maintain with the RBI in the form of gold or government approved securities (G-Secs or bonds) before lending.
Post this surprise announcement, Sensex and Nifty jumped to record high level with Sensex crossing 30,000 mark for the first time in history.

  1. Three South Asian women, Niloofar Rahmani, Nadia Sharmeen and Tabassum Adnan, were selected for the prestigious International Women of Courage Award for the year 2015 this week. The award will be given by the US Secretary of State on the eve of Women-s day. It was established in 2007 and since then it has honoured 86 women from more than 50 different countries including India.

They were chosen from the list of 10 extraordinary women from 10 countries for the award for demonstrating exceptional courage and raising awareness about human rights, importance of women and gender equality.

  1. US President Barack Obama has re-nominated Sunil Sabhrawal as Alternate Executive Director at International Monetary Fund (IMF).Earlier he was nominated to the position of the IMF in 2014.

  2. Chinese government has projected China-s economic growth at 7% for the current year 2015, which will be the lowest GDP growth in last 25 years for the world-s second largest economy. China's Premier Li Keqiang announced the same at the opening of China's annual parliamentary meeting in Beijing. He also promised to fight corruption and pollution, and stressed the need for more painful reforms to support the economy in the longer term.

  3. The European Central Bank has increased eurozone GDP growth projection to 1.5% for the current year 2015 compared to earlier projection of 1%. It also said that economic growth will improve to 2.1% by 2017.

The ECB also confirmed the decision of its quantitative easing (QE) plans which was announced first in January this year.

  1. Roger Federer defeated Novak Djokovic by 6-3, 7-5 to win the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title this week. It was his 126th ATP final and his 84th career title.

  1. Hyderabad has been ranked as the top Indian city in the quality of living ranking, as per the Mercer-s Quality of Living Report 2015 published today. Hyderabad has been ranked at 138 globally with Pune holding the second position among Indian cities at 145th.Mumbai and New Delhi ranked at 152 and 154 respectively in the same list.

Mercer-s Quality of Living Report 2015 highlights that Indian cities haven-t made much progress on the quality of living scale compared to last year. Over time, Hyderabad has emerged as a city of choice due to factors such as improved options for international schools and a fine choice of reputable English speaking schools.

  1. World-s largest and tallest Indian national flag was unfurled at Town Park in Faridabad in the presence of BJP president Amit Shah, Haryana CM ML Khattar and Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor.The flag has dimension of 96 feet by 64 feet and weighs 48 kilograms. Flag was hoisted at the height of 250 feet which makes it the world-s largest and the highest hoisted Indian flag in the world.

  2. Maharashtra government has scrapped the 5% reservation for Muslims in government jobs today which was given by earlier NCP-Congress government in July 2014 just before the assembly election.

The reservation was given to, two separate categories the namely the Educationally and Socially Backward Category (ESBC) for Marathas as well as a Special Backward Class (Muslims) segment for the Muslims.

Union Minister Raosaheb Dadarao Danve, who held the portfolio of Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution , resigned from the Council of Ministers over the principle of -one-man, one-post-.Earlier he was made Maharasthra BJP president after former BJP President of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis was made as Chief Minister of the state. As per the new -one-man, one-post-, every leader can hold only one post within the party and government.

  2. IAS officer Kewal K Sharma has been appointed as Chief Secretary of Delhi and his appointment was approved by Union Home Ministry. Currently he is the chief secretary of Goa and appointed as the Goa chief secretary on 1stJanuary this year. He had earlier served in the United Nations (UN) Mission in Kosovo from 1999 to 2005 as a Civil Affairs Officer.

Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji was awarded with the National Award for the Best Representation of the Cause of Safety, Security and Protection of Women and Girl Child by National Institute of Gender Justice (NIGJ).With this she has become the first ever film personality to be awarded with this prestigious award. She was awarded for creating awareness about child trafficking in New Delhi.

  4. Indian-American physician Rahul Jindal was selected for the prestigious Fulbright-Nehru Distinguished Chair. The Ahmedabad-based HL Trivedi Institute of Transplantation Sciences will host Rahul Jindal for the duration of the chair. The Institute performs about 400 kidney transplants in a year and has developed innovative transplant tolerance models.

  5. Global credit rating Moody's has said today that RBI-s new Inflation targeting mechanism is a "credit positive" move for India and it is expected to make RBI's monetary policy tools much more effective.Under the new Inflation targeting mechanism, the government has mandated RBI to bring down inflation to below 6% by January 2016 and then target a level of 4% by March next year. This will also be a major boost to India-s credit outlook.

  1. The unemployment rate in the US dropped to 5.5% in February compared to 5.7% in January as the world-s largest economy has added 295,000 jobs in the month of February. With this, US economy showed strong growth in the job market first two months of 2015 after posting a strong growth in 2014.

  1. India has been ranked at the lowest position among 16Asia Pacific countries in terms of the socio-economic standing of women, as per Mastercard-s latest Index of Women-s Advancement. India was ranked even at a lower position compared to its neighbors Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Across the region, New Zealand had the highest overall Index score of 77, followed by Australia (76), the Philippines (72.6) and Singapore (70.5) while India (44.2), Bangladesh (44.6) and Sri Lanka (46.2) had scores below 50.2

  1. Time Magazine has ranked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi among the list of 30 most influential people on the internet. As per Time magazine, he has around 38 million followers on social networking sites Twitter and Facebook.

  2. The RBI eased the norms for home loans for up to Rs 10 lakh by allowing banks to include stamp duty and registration charges to the cost of a unit.These changes are around 15% of the cost of the house and as per the current practice, banks do not include stamp duty, registration and other documentation charges in the cost of housing property. RBI-s this decision will help lots of middle class home buyers.

  3. Walmart India has appointed Ashwin Mittal as the new Chief Financial Officer and Javier Rojo as head of Real Estate and Business Development. Ashwin Mittal will replace Jill Anderson, currently the CFO of Walmart India. Javier will lead the Real Estate and Business Development and will be responsible for Design & Construction, Real Estate and Store Planning.

  4. India-s foreign exchange (forex) reserves jumped by USD 3.886 billion to all time high USD 338.079 billion in the week ended 27thFebruary, as per weekly report published by the RBI.

The jump was mainly due to increase in foreign currency assets which was increased by USD 3.902 billion to USD 312.2 billion in the same week. However Special Drawing Rights and India-s reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were also decreased by USD 11.4 million and USD 4.6 million in the same week. Gold Reserves remained unchanged at USD 20.183 billion in the same week.

Indian badminton player Saina Nehwal reached the final of the prestigious All England Badminton Championship today after defeating Sun Yu of China by 21-13, 21-13 in the semifinal match.With this, she scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to achieve the feat.The World No. 3 Indian reached the semifinals of the event in 2010 and 2013. Earlier Indian legends Prakash Padukone and P Gopichand won the prestigious title in the past.

  1. International Women-s Day was observed on 8thMarch across the world to mark the political, economic and social achievements of women. The theme for 2015 international womens day was -Make It Happen- with a hash tag #MakeItHappen which was declared by United Nations to encourage effective action for recognizing and advancing women.

The first International Women-s Day was celebrated in 1911 on March 19 when a protest was held by International Ladies Garment Workers Union against long working hours in New York. After that Women-s Day has been celebrated on March 8 in Germany in 1914 since then the date has been fixed on 8th March.

  1. Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakara has announced his retirement from Test cricket on 8thMarch. As per his announcement, he would retire after playing the three-match Test series against India in August 2015. Sangakkara had already taken retirement from One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty-20 cricket.

He retired from Twenty-20 cricket format after Sri Lanka won the T20 World cup in 2014 and he had earlier announced to retire from ODI cricket format after the ongoing ICC World Cup 2015.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar launched a new scheme for girl child named as "Aapki Beti Humari Beti" in the state with the key aim to combat the problem of declining child sex ratio in the state.The scheme will be implemented in in both rural and urban areas of the state covering first-born girl child of Scheduled Caste (SC) and Below Poverty Line (BPL) families and all second girl child born on or after 22ndJanuary 2015 of all families.

Under this scheme, the first girl child born on or after 22nd January 2015, in SC and BPL families will be eligible to receive Rs 21,000 and all second girl child born on or after 22nd January 2015 of all families will get Rs 21,000. Families, where twin girls or multiple girls are born, will get Rs 21,000 per girl child.

  1. Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has been removed as the Rajasthan Cricket Association president. A no-confidence motion was passed against him by office bearers of the rival Amin Pathan group in an Extraordinary General Body Meeting in Jaipur.With this, Amin Pathan is all set to take charge as the new President of Rajasthan Cricket Association.

  2. Famous journalist and author Vinod Mehta passed away after prolonged illness in Delhi on Sunday. He was 72.He founded the Outlook Magazine and served as its Editor-in-Chief, last held the post of editorial Chairman of the publication. He had also served as the editor of several publications, including The Pioneer, The Sunday Observer, The Independent and The Indian Post.

  3. Olympic bronze medalist and Indian badminton player Saina Nehwal suffered a heart-breaking loss to Spain's Carolina Marin in the final match of women's singles at the prestigious All England badminton championships in Birmingham on Sunday. She was defeated 21-16, 14-21, 7-21 in the final match. Earlier she scripted history by becoming the first Indian women player to reach final of All England badminton women-s singles championships.

  1. The LokSabha has passed the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Amendment Bill 2015 amid walk out by the opposition parties. The government had introduced 9 official amendments in the Bill to make the bill more industry friendly.

All the amendments moved by the opposition were rejected, so opposition parties including Congress, Trinamool Congress, Left, BJD, Samajwadi Party and RJD staged a walk out. The Ordinance had brought several changes in the earlier legislation passed by the UPA government in 2013.

  1. Former Union Minister M. Veerappa Moily has been awarded with the prestigious Saraswati Samman 2014 for his Kannada poem Ramayana Mahanveshanam. Ramayana Mahanveshanam was first published in Kannada in 2007.

Saraswati Samman, established by the KK Birla Foundation in 1991, is an annual award that is given in recognition of outstanding prose or poetry literary works in Indian languages that are listed in Schedule VIII of the constitution of India. It carries a prize amount of 10 lakh rupees along with citation and a plaque.

  1. India-s largest real estate company DLF has tied-up with e-commerce marketplace Snapdeal to sell its apartments. As per deal, it will also offer 1% discount to potential home buyers. DLF will offer about 50 flats in eight housing projects located in different locations including New Chandigarh, Panchkula, Lucknow, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi and Kolkata.

  2. Indian defeated Ireland by 8 wickets today in the group league match today. With this, India has created a new record of winning their ninth consecutive ICC Cricket World Cup match. MS Dhoni-s team India broke the previous eight-match continuous winning record achieved by Sourav Ganguly-s team in 2003 World Cup.

  1. Three French sports personalities are killed along with other 7 people in a helicopter crash in Argentina when two helicopters collided during filming near Villa Castelli in Argentina. French sportspersons who died in the accident are sailor Florence Arthaud, who broke the record for crossing the North Atlantic alone in 1990, swimmer Camille Muffat, who won three medals at the 2012 London Olympics and boxerAlexis Vastine,who won a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

  2. U.S. President Barack Obama has nominated diplomat David Hale as the next ambassador to Pakistan.Earlier he had served as the Special Envoy for Middle East Peace from 2011 to 2013, and as Deputy Special Envoy for Middle East Peace from 2009 to 2011.

  3. Pakistan has successfully tested nuclear capable surface to surface missile Shaheen-III. The Missile is capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads and has a strike range of 2,750 km.

  4. Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara created a history today after becoming the first batsman to score four consecutive centuries in ICC World Cup. He achieved this feat after scoring century today while playing against Scotland in a group league match. Before that he scored three centuries against Bangladesh, England and Australia.

  1. Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was summoned as accused by a special CBI court in a coal scam case in Delhi today along with Industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, former Coal Secretary PC Parakh and three others.The Court summoned them for offences of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and under provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act.

The case was related to allocation of Talabira-II coal block in Odisha in 2005, when the then Prime Minister Singh was holding the coal portfolio. He held the charge of the Coal Ministry for almost five years from the time the UPA government came to power in 2004.

  1. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari launched a web portalwww.inampro.nic.inon 10th March to monitor the supply of cement and ease the order process by prospective users with the respective cement manufacturing companies. He also plans to construct cement concrete highways compared to the current bitumen roads in order to reduce cost and increase durability.

The portal will make cement demand-supply and buying process completely transparent. Nearly 36 participating cement manufacturers will quote rates from 103 factories across India, along with the cement stock available, on the web portal.

  1. State-run insurance major LIC has announced that it had committed Rs 1.5 lakh crore to the Indian Railways for development of various commercially viable projects. The investment would be done in bonds issued by various railway entities such Indian Railways Finance Corporation (IRFC), beginning next fiscal.

IIP grew by 2.6% in January; CPI inflation increases marginally to 5.37% in February
India's Index of Industrial Production, the most important parameter to judge performance of industrial sector, grew by 2.6% in January compared to 1.7% growth in December. IIP growth stood at 1.1% in January 2014. Manufacturing sector output, which constitutes over 75% of the index, grew by 3.3% in January compared to just 0.3 % growth in the same month last year which pushed the overall IIP growth higher.
The cumulative IIP growth for the period April-January of the current financial year 2014-15 stood at 2.5% compared to 0.1% growth in the same period last year.
At the same time, India's Retail inflation, measured by Consumer Price Index, increased slightly to 5.37% in February compared to 5.11% in January, measured on the new base year of 2012. Retail Food inflation, measured by newly published Consumer Food Price Index, stood at 6.79% in February compared to 6.14% in previous month of January. The consumer price based retail inflation (consumer price index or CPI) for February is calculated with a new base year of 2012.

  1. India and Sri Lanka have signed four agreements today during Narendra Modi-s maiden visit to the country.This is the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister in last 28 years. Prime Minister Modi met Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and discussed different bilateral issues between two neighbor nations.

Both the countries have signed four agreements on visa, customs, youth development and building Rabindranath Tagore memorial in Sri Lanka. India-s central bank Reserve Bank of India has agreed for a USD 1.5 billion currency swap agreement with the Sri Lankan central bank in order to help the Sri Lankan currency stable. It has lost almost three per cent value in comparison to the Indian rupee so far in 2015.

  1. International Monetary Fund had increased India-s GDP growth forecast to 7.2% for the current financial year.Last year, IMF had forecasted a growth rate of 5.6% for the current financial year, and 6.4% for the next financial year. The new forecasts have considered a revised methodology adopted by India earlier this year for calculating the GDP data.

  2. Famous Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal jumped to second place in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) women's singles rankings after her silver medal at the recently held All England Badminton Championship.She is now only behind No 1 badminton player Li Xuerui of China.Another Indian shuttler PV Sindhu remained static at 9thrank, in the top-10 list.

In the men's singles category, Kidambi Srikanth of India also jumped by one place to be at No. 4. China-s Chen Long leads the ranking followed by Denmark-s Jan O Jorgensen and China-s Lin Dan.

  1. Karnataka defeated Tamil Nadu by an innings and 217 runsat the Wankhede stadium in Mumbaito retain the Ranji Trophy. This is also Karnataka-s eighth Ranji Trophy title. The team is won the trophy last year and now undefeated in the last 28 matches.

Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed was convicted and sentenced to 13 years in Jail after a quick and disputed trial.His supporters said the charges are aimed at eliminating him as a challenger against incumbent President Yameen Abdul Gayoom in the 2018 presidential election. He was the first democratically elected President of Maldives.

  2. Harvard University retained No 1 rank in the World Reputation Rankings 2015 published by Times Higher Education this week which published the top 100 universities across the world.In the list of top 10 Universities, 8 are located in USA while UK has rest 2 universities. Harvard University is followed by University of Cambridge in UK and University of Oxford in UK.

  1. The government of India has appointed world boxing champion and Olympic medal winner Mary Kom as a Brand Ambassador for the North East states. She was selected for the promotion of culture and tourism in the North East states of India.

  2. Famous Gandhian and Narayan Desai was passed away in Tapi district in Gujarat on 14thMarch. He was 90.He was the son of Mahadev Desai who was the personal secretary of Mahatma Gandhi.

He was accorded with many awards including Jamnalal Bajaj Award in 1999, UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize and Moortidevi Award In 2004. He was also awarded with Sahitya Akademi Award in 1993 for his book on biography of his father Mahadev Desai and Ranjitram Suwarna Chandrak - the highest award for Gujarati literature in 2001.

  1. India-s foreign exchange (forex) reserves jumped by USD 3.886 billion to all time high USD 338.079 billion in the week ended 27thFebruary, as per weekly report published by the RBI.

The jump was mainly due to increase in foreign currency assets which was increased by USD 3.902 billion to USD 312.2 billion in the same week. However Special Drawing Rights and India-s reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were also decreased by USD 11.4 million and USD 4.6 million in the same week. Gold Reserves remained unchanged at USD 20.183 billion in the same week.

He was involved in several leadership roles during his 23-year-long career with TCS before joining Wipro.

  4. Indian badminton player K. Srikanth won the Swiss Grand Prix Gold championship title after defeating Viktor Axelson by 21-15, 12-21, 21-14 in a hard-fought men-s singles final. World No. 4 Srikanth defeated his ranked sixth opponent to win the USD 120,000 event. He previously created a major upset in the final of the 2014 China Open Super Series Premier by defeating five-time world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Lin Dan.

India's overall inflation drops to -2.06 percent in February
India's overall inflation, measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), drops to -2.06% in February compared to -0.39% in January due to drop in fuel products. This is the fourth consecutive time, wholesale price index remained in the negative zone. Wholesale inflation stood at 5.03% in February last year.
Inflation in food articles stood at 7.74% in the same month while the rate of inflation for fuel dropped further to (-) 14.72% in February compared to (-) 10.69% in January due to continuous drop in crude oil price. Also the rate of inflation for manufactured products dropped to 0.33% in February from 1.05% in the previous month.

The Supreme Court has set aside the notification issued by the erstwhile UPA government to include Jats in the Central list of Other Backward Classes (OBC) for according benefits of reservation to them in a ruling yesterday.A bench of Justice Tarun Gogoi and Justice R.F. Nariman found fault with the Centre-s decision to overlook the findings of the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) stating that Jats do not deserve to be included in the Central list of OBC as they don-t form socio-economic backward class.

Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani was named Young Global Leader from India by the World Economic Forum (WEF).With this she joins the list of other famous persons who had been named Young Global Leader (YGL) in the past including British Prime Minister David Cameron, Alibaba Group chief Jack Ma, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, Google chief Larry Page and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

Ten other Indians were also included in the list of 187 YGLs for 2015 including Gaurav Gogoi, son of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and an MP.

Foreign direct investment(FDI) in India jumped more than 100% to USD 4.48 billion in January compared to USD 2.18 billion received in the same month last year.This is the highest FDI inflow in last 29 months.During the April-January period of the current financial year, the foreign inflows jumped by 36% compared to same period last year to USD 25.52 billion, as per the data from Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). The inflows were at USD 18.74 billion during the same period a year ago.

Amongst the top 10 sectors, telecom received the maximum FDI of USD 2.83 billion in the 10-month period, followed by services (USD 2.64 billion), automobiles (USD 2.04 billion), computer software and hardware (USD 1.30 billion) and pharmaceuticals (USD 1.25 billion).  India received the maximum FDI from Mauritius at USD 7.66 billion, followed by Singapore (USD 5.26 billion), the Netherlands (USD 3.13 billion), Japan (USD 1.61 billion) and the US (USD 1.58 billion) during the same duration.

  3. Indian author Amitav Ghosh has been shortlisted among 10 finalists for this year's Man Booker International Prize for his contribution to the English language writing. The finalists were announced at the University of Cape Town in South Africa by writer and academic Professor Marina Warner who is also the chair of the five-person judging panel. Amitav Ghosh had narrowly missed out on the Booker Prize back in 2008 when he was shortlisted for his work 'Sea of Poppies'.

  4. Renowned ecologist Madhav Gadgil has been selected for the 2015 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement. He will share the USD 200,000 worth cash prize with famous American marine ecologist Dr. Jane Lubchenco.

Both of them have been selected for their work in changing policy and specifically for their "leadership and engagement in the development of conservation and sustainability policies in the United States, India and internationally".

  1. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has projected India-s economy to grow at 7.8% in financial year 2015-16 due to improved performance in industry and services, as per its latest report. This is higher than 7.4% GDP growth projected for the current financial year 2014-15.

Also as per ADB report, India is expected to grow faster than China in the next few years. It expects Chinese economy to grow by 7.2% this year which is slightly lower than 7.4% growth witnessed last year.

Post the merger process, Kraft shareholders will own a 49% stake in the combined company and Heinz shareholders will own the rest 51% stake.

The Folio Prize was instituted in 2014 which recognizes the best English-language fiction from around the world, published in the United Kingdom (UK) during a particular year.

Nobel Laureate John F Nash Jr. has been awarded with the Abel Prize 2015 for his work on partial differential equations. The prize was announced on 25thMarch by the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters.He will share the Prize with Louis Nirenberg, Professor Emeritus at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. They both will share the prize money of 760000 US dollar and they will receive the Abel Prize from His Majesty King Harald at a ceremony in Oslo in May this year.

The Abel Prize, established in 2001 by the Government of Norway, is an international prize presented annually by the King of Norway to one or more outstanding mathematicians. The prize was named after Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel. This is also referred as the mathematician's Nobel Prize.

Four founding members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), including senior leaders Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, have been removed from the party-s national executive after a party-s national council meeting held on 28thMarch on New Delhi. A resolution to remove Bhushan and Yadav was passed by a majority of the 311 council members that attended the meeting. Yadav-s supporters Anand Kumar and Ajit Jha were also removed from the national executive.

Soon after the removal of the four leaders, social activist Medha Patkar has resigned from the party terming the event as unfortunate.

  1. India successfully launched its fourth navigation satellite IRNSS-1D from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on 28thMarch. With this success, India moved closer towards joining a select group of nations possessing its own satellite navigation system.

The satellite is the fourth in the series of seven navigation satellites that ISRO is planning to launch to put in place the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). The first three satellites in the IRNSS series were launched in July 2014, April and August 2014.

  1. President Pranab Mukherjee has removed Mizoram Governor Aziz Qureshi from his post. Governor of West Bengal Keshri Nath Tripathi has been given additional charge of the state until further appointment of a new Governor.

  2. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) won Gandhi Peace Prize 2014. The award was selected by the jury under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.The Indian space agency successfully launched Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) and at a very cost effective price of 450 crore rupees. Also it was its first attempt to launch a Mars Orbiter mission.

  3. Kerala Finance Minister KM Mani has been appointed as the Chairman of the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers on Goods and Services Tax (GST) by the Union Finance Ministry this week. The post was lying vacant since the former Jammu and Kashmir Finance Minister Abdul Rahim quit the position after the defeat of National Conference in the J&K Assembly elections held late last year.

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is expected to be implemented from 1st April 2016 as announced by the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his 2015-16 budget speech.

  1. Railways Ministry has formed a new Committee under former IAS officer Ajay Shankar to review the existing Public Private Partnership (PPP) Cell in the Railway Board. The Committee will recommend measures needed to make the PPP Cell more customer friendly, customer friendly and effective.

  2. An Indian - American professor Murty S Kambhampati has been chosen among the list of 15 scientists who all have been selected for a prestigious US presidential award for excellence in the field of science, mathematics and engineering mentoring. He will receive the award along with others at a White House ceremony later this year.

  3. Delhi girl Aditi Arya was crowned FBB Femina Miss India World 2015 at a ceremony held at Yashraj Studios in Mumbai yesterday. Afreen Racheal Vaz was chosen as first runner-up while Vartika Singh was chosen as second runner up.

Aditi will represent the country at Miss World pageant and the runners-up Afreen and Vartika will compete for other international titles including Miss International and Miss Asia Pacific.

  1. India-s foreign exchange (forex) reserves jumped by USD 4.261 billion to all time high USD 339.991 billion in the week ended 20thMarch, as per weekly report published by the RBI.

The jump was mainly due to increase in foreign currency assets which was increased by USD 4.539 billion to USD 314.886 billion in the same week.  Special Drawing Rights was also increased by USD 18.2 million and India-s reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF)  was decreased by USD 295.8 million in the same week. Gold Reserves remained unchanged at USD 19.837 billion in the same week.

  1. Indian famous shuttler Saina Nehwal wrote history on 28thMarch after becoming the first Indian woman to reach World number one ranking in Badminton World Federation Rankings.She reached the No 1 spot after All England Badminton champion Spain-s Carolina Marin lost to Thailand-s Ratchanok Intanon in semi-final encounter in the Indian Open Super Series in Delhi yesterday. Saina becomes only second Indian overall to be world number one after Prakash Padukone achieved this No 1 raking in men's badminton.

Also she reached the women singles final by defeating Japan's Yuo Hashimoto by 21-15, 21-11 in the semifinal match. Also world No. 4 Srikanth, who won the Swiss Open earlier this month, also made his second successive finals after defeating Chinese Xue Song 21-16 21-13 in the semifinal match.

  1. Australia defeated New Zealand by 7 wickets in the final match of the ICC Cricket World cup to list the Cricket World Cup for the record fifth time in Melbourne, Australia yesterday. New Zealand players were able to score only 183 runs after loss of 10 wickets which Australia chased easily after losing 3 wickets. Australia won world cups in previous years 1987, 1999, 2003, and 2007.

James Faulkner was adjudged man of the match while Mitchell Starc won the man of the series award after finishing the tournament with 22 wickets.
Australia captain Michael Clarke retired from ODIs after this win and joining the list of Australia's World Cup winning captains which include Allan Border, Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh.

  1. Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel won the Malaysian Grand Prix 2015 held on 29thMarch. Lewis Hamilton finished second and Nico Rosberg finished third in the same race.This was also Vettel-s first win since that year-s season finale in Brazil.

  1. BJP Leader Poonam Mahajan was unanimously elected as the President of Basketball Federation. With this, she became the first woman President of the Basketball Federation ever since it was established in 1950.

At the same time, Roopam Harish Sharma, secretary of Delhi Basketball Association,  was unanimously elected as the Secretary General of the BFI, again first by a woman.

  1. The Reserve Bank of India has relaxed provisioning rules against bad loans by allowing banks to set aside up to 50% of floating provisions, compared to earlier limit of 33%. The new relaxation will be applicable for floating provisions held by them as of the end of December 2014.

This step will help banks to provide more relaxation for theirs bad loans, thereby reducing the hit banks may face on their profitability due to the bad loans.

  1. Japanese auto major Honda has been appointed Katsushi Inoue slated as its new President & CEO of its Indian operation Honda Cars India Ltd from April this year. He will succeed incumbent Hironori Kanayama who is due to retire and return to Japan.

As part of the other management changes, Hiroyuki Shimizu will be the new Senior Vice President & Director, Marketing & Sales, in Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL).

  1. Saina Nehwal won her maiden India Open Super Series Women-s singles title after defeating former world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand by 21-16 21-14 in the final match held in New Delhi. Recently she achieved No 1 rank in the World Badminton ranking list, first time by an Indian woman.

At the same time, other Indian shuttler K. Srikanth defeated Viktor Axelsen of Denmark by 18-21, 21-13, 21-12 to win the India Open Super Series Badminton Men's Singles title. This is his second Super Series title.
