Current Affairs International - 1-2 June 2016

  1. The world's longest and deepest rail tunnel, under the Switzerland Alps, was inaugurated in Switzerland. The 57-kilometer long Gotthard Base Tunnelwill connect northern and southern Europe and shorten travel time for many rail routes. This tunnel was built in 17 years by 2,400 workers. It broke the record of Japan's Seikan tunnel, which is 53.9 kilometers long.

  2. CEAT Cricket Awards 2016 were conferred on players in which Indian batsman Virat Kohli won the title 'Ceat T20 Player of the Year' and former Indian team captain Dilip Vengsarkar was awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award.



English batsman Joe Root won International Cricketer of the Year and International Batsman of the Year award while Indian bowler R Ashwin won the International Bowler of the Year award. Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill won the Test Cricketer of the Year and ODI Cricketer of the Year respectively.

  1. The Draft Trafficking of Persons (prevention, Protection & Rehabilitation) Bill, 2016 was launched by Union Women and Child Development minister Maneka Gandhi with the aim to prevent human trafficking, protect and help them to rehabilitate.The bill closed several loopholes in the age old laws against human trafficking such as, Indian Penal Code, 1860, Criminal Procedure Code, 1973 and Offenders Act, 1958.


The bill recognises new offences such as disclosure of identity of the victim of trafficking and witness, use of narcotic drug or psychotropic substance or alcohol for the purpose of trafficking and use of chemical substance or hormones for the purpose of exploitation.

  1. The Central Government has increased the retirement age of doctors of central services to 65 years of age in order to strengthen the healthcare sector and improve public health service in the country. The move will enable the government to retain experienced doctors for a longer period, and to provide better services in its public health facilities, particularly to the poorest, who are entirely dependent on public facilities.

  2. The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to set up India Post payment bank as Public Limited Company under Department of Posts, with 100% government equity. The total architecture of postal payments bank is of Rs. 800 crore in which Rs 400 crore will come from Equity.

  3. Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed former Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi, IPS (Retd) as a member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).He is an officer of Indian Police Service of Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre of 1977 batch.

  4. India-s eight core industries grew by 8.5% in April 2016 compared to same month last year. The eight core industries have 38% weight in the Index of Industrial Production. This increase will boost IIP growth for the current month.

  5. Popular TV actor and comedian Razzak Khan passed away after suffering from a cardiac arrest this week.He made his Bollywood debut in 1993 with Boney Kapoor's production venture Roop ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and acted in more than 90 films in his two decades long career.

  6. Kolkata based Eden Garden's famous curator Prabir Mukherjee has passed away in Kolkata. He was 86 year old. He was in charge of the Eden Gardens for over two decades and also served as the manager of Bengal and East Zone teams. His association with Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) began in 1979.

  1. Argentina continues to hold No 1 position in the list of latest FIFA ranking published this week followed by Belgium, Columbia and Germany. India has been ranked at 163rdposition in the same ranking.

  2. Legendary boxing champion, Muhammad Ali passed away after battling with prolonged illness. He was 74. He won the heavyweight boxing championship title thrice and won 57 matches from total 62 matches he participated.He also wrote some best-selling books about his career, including The Greatest: My Own Story and The Soul of a Butterfly.

  1. India has been ranked at 70thposition among 163 countries as per the Good Country 2015 index published this week. The report ranked a total of 163 countries taking 35 different UN and World Bank indices into account, including global contributions to science, culture, peace and security, climate change and health and equality.


As per the ranking, the top ten best countries in the world are Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, Finland, Canada, France, Austria and New Zealand. Libya was ranked as the least "good" country in the world.

  1. Two Indian-origin women, Neerja Sethi and Jayshree Ullal, have been included in the Forbes' annual list of America's 60 wealthiest and most successful self-made women entrepreneurs. India-born Neerja Sethi, co founder of IT consulting and outsourcing firm Syntel with her husband Bharat Desai, ranked at 16th on 'America's Richest Self-made Women' list while President and CEO of Arista Networks, Jayshree Ullal has been ranked at 30th position in the list.

  2. N.K.Chari has been appointed as the new Managing Director of State Bank of Mysore. Before this appointment, he served as the Deputy Managing Director of State Bank of India.

  3. Senior IPS Officer, Navin Agarwal, has been appointed the Director General (DG)/ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).He has been appointed for 5 years.

  4. Indian Banker, Raghavan Seetharaman, Group CEO of Doha Bank, was awarded with the 'Green Economy Visionary award' at the 2016 Union of Arab Banks International Banking Summit held in Rome this weekfor his contribution in environment-friendly activities and for promoting green economy for nearly two decades.

  5. Asia-s oldest stock exchange, Bombay Stock Exchange has received the Reserve Bank of India-s approval to start an online bidding platform for Sovereign Gold Bond scheme. The exchange plans to offer an online bidding platform for collecting bids from members and their clients for the SGB issue. This bidding platform is part of the iBBS (Internet-based Book Building System) — exchange-s existing web-based online bidding platform for IPO, Offer for Sale, and offer to buy issues.

  6. Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has been chosen to be part of Kerala government's awareness campaign against alcohol and drugs. The announcement was made on 1st june by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stating that Tendulkar has given his consent for the same.

  7. Famous Indian tennis star Leander Paes completed a 'Career Slam' in mixed doubles with his Swiss partner Martina Hingis after defeating Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig pair in Paris. It was 18th Grand Slam title for him and 10th in the mixed doubles.

  1. The World Environment Day was observed on 5th June, 2016 across the world to promote Zero tolerance for the illegal trade in wildlife. The year's theme "Go Wild for Life" encourages everyone to spread word about extensive damage caused by wildlife crime.

  2. Novak Djokovic of Serbia won French Open Men-s singles title after defeating Andy Murray. With this, he won his 12th major title and became the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slams at once. Garbine Muguruza of Spain won French Open Women-s singles title after defeating Serena Williams in the final match.


Feliciano Lopez & Marc Lopez of Spain won French Open Men-s double while Caroline Garcia & Kristina Mladenovic of France won French Open Women's Double title.

  2. Bharti Airtel has appointed Ashok Ganapathy as Director for Airtel Business with effective from 1stJuly 2016.He will replace Manish Prakash who has been appointed as the Director - Strategic Alliances.

  3. Facebook India has appointed Umang Bedi as managing director.He will take over from Kirthiga Reddy, who will return back to the US to take on a new role.

  4. The International Olympic Committee has awarded the Olympic Order to Indian Olympic Association president N. Ramachandran for his outstanding services to the Olympic movement. He is an Indian squash administrator and became the president of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in February 2014.

  5. Famous Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik won gold medal in people's choice prize at world championship festival of sand sculpting Russe, 2016, Bulgariafor his sand sculpture "Drugs Kill Sports ".

  6. Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan has announced the Second Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement for the year 2016-17 this week in which he has kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.5%, reverse repo rate unchanged at 6 %and CRR unchanged at 4%.LAF will remain unchanged at 6%, and the MSF rate and the Bank Rate at 7 %.

  7. HDFC Ergo, a joint venture between home loan major HDFC and German insurer Ergo International, acquired L&T General Insurance for Rs.551 crore. This acquisition will help HDFC Ergo become the third-largest private general insurer, after ICICI Lombard and Bajaj Allianz General Insurance.

  8. Legendary Indian body builder and India's first Mr. Universe Manohar Aich, passed away due to age related illness in Kolkata this week. He was 102. Known as Pocket Hercules due to his 4 feet 11 inch height, he won Asian Games gold deal three times and also the first Indian to win the Mr Universe title post-independence in 1952.

  9. Veteran Hindi and Marathi actor, Sulabha Deshpande passed away this week. She was 82. She was awarded with the 1987 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindi-Marathi theatre.

  1. The World Oceans day was observed globally on 8th June with the theme of 2016 as -Celebration is Healthy Ocean, Healthy Planet-.The theme focuses on curbing plastic pollution since plastic degrades slowly polluting the waterways for a longer time thus negatively affecting the marine flora.

  2. Global Retail giant Walmart has been ranked at No1 position in the Fortune 500 list for the fourth consecutive years based on total revenues. Walmart is followed by Oil and Gas Company Exxon Mobil and Apple.

  3. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) has announced the names proposed for the new elements, whose discovery helped to complete the seventh row of the Periodic Table in December last year.The names proposed for the elements with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118 were Nihonium (Nh), Moscovium (Mc), Tennessine (Ts) and Oganesson (Og) respectively.

  4. Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova was banned for two years by the International Tennis Federation for allegedly using banned substances. She was tested positive at the Australian Open 2016 for using the banned substance meldonium. The suspension has been backdated to January 26, 2016, the day Sharapova failed her drugs test.

  5. Former Soviet Chess Legend Korchnoi passed away this week. He was 85. He was a four-time USSR champion and ranked number one in the world in 1965.

  1. India has been ranked at 141th position on the 2016 Global Peace Index among 163 countries, as per the list published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).Iceland was named as most peaceful country while Syria was named as least peaceful country.

  2. An inter-ministerial committee on 'Decongestion of Traffic in Delhi' headed by Rajiv Gauba has submitted its report to the union Ministry of Urban Development. The committee has recommended to improve Public Transport and Disincentivise use of private vehicles; to promote Road Safety and efficient Traffic Management; to set up Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority and enhancing institutional capacity; and to promote Transit Oriented Development through integrated land use and transportation planning.

  3. Central government has recently released the draft National Water Framework bill, 2016 in order to invite comments and suggestions from public. The objective of the bill is to establish a national legal framework for protection, conservation, management and regulation of water in the country.

  4. Famous Indian-origin professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya was awarded the prestigious Regius Professorship in Manufacturing by Queen Elizabeth II for his outstanding contribution in manufacturing.

  5. Four Indian women, including SBI Managing director Arundhati Bhattacharya (ranked 25th) and ICICI Bank Managing director Chanda Kochhar (ranked 40th), have been included in the new list of Forbes- world-s 100 most powerful women. The Forbes -100 Most Powerful Women- in the world list 2016, is topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

  6. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has announced Lucknow, India will host the junior men's hockey World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in December this year. The event will feature 16 teams.

  1. The World Bank has lowered its 2016 growth forecast by 0.5% to 2.4% and Its president said it is critically important for governments to pursue policies that boos economic growth and improve the livelihood of those living in extreme poverty.

  2. Forbes magazine has released a list of world's highest paid athletes in 2016 in which football player Cristiano Ronaldo topped the list with earnings of USD 88 million in total. He was followed by Argentinian football player Lionel Messi with earnings of USD 8.14 million and NBA-s Lebron James.

  3. Famous CanadianIce hockey player Gordie Howe, popularly known as Mr. Hockey, passed away. He was 88.He was considered among the greatest ice hockey players of all time.

  1. Maharashtra government has announced 21st day of every month to be observed as the Yoga day across all schools, colleges and universities.21st day of every month is chosen as the international yoga day is celebrated on 21st June.

  2. Sikkim became the first Indian state in India to have an open government data portal linked -sikkim.data.gov.in-. The portal was launched by Lok Sabha MP, P D Rai and also launched Open Government Data Platform (Sikkim).

  3. Global Internet search engine giant Google and Tata Trusts- joint initiative Internet Saathi was launched in Kolkata, West Bengal in order to reduce the digital gender gap in rural areas of India such as Purulia,where girls have now been trained to use the Internet and teach others in turn. The initiative has already been active in villages across five states in India, namely Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

  4. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been conferred the National Award for Best Performing Central PSU for Roof Top Solar Power initiatives at a glittering function at Vigyan Bhawan by Minister of State for Power, Coal and Renewable Energy, Piyush Goyal.

  5. Veteran India-American author Akhil Sharma won the Dublin International Literary award for his second novel 'family life'. Dublin International Literary award is considered as the world's richest literary award with a cash prize of 1,00,000 Euro. He also bagged the 2015 Folio Prize worth 40,000 pounds for his autobiographical novel.

  6. Jet AirwaysChairman Naresh Goyal has been re-elected to IATA's Board of Governors which will be his fifth successive tenure at the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Board of Governors. He is the only representative of IATA from India.

  7. India-s Index of industrial production (IIP) contracted by 0.8% in April due to poor performance of the manufacturing and capital goods sectors compared to 3% growth in the same month last year. Manufacturing sector, which constitutes over 75 per cent of the index, contracted 3.1% in the same month.

  8. India-s leading Private bankAxis Bank has launched India's first certified green bond at London Stock Exchange to to finance the climate change solutions across globe. Axis Bank raised a USD 500 million at London stock exchange.

  9. India has surpassed Japan to become the third largest Oil consumer in the world. With a demand of 4,1 million barrels a day, India accounted for 4.5% of world oil consumption in 2015.

  10. Famous Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal won the Australian Open Super Series Badminton tournament title after defeating Chinese Sun Yu in the final match held at Sydney this week.

  4. Global Tech Giant Microsoft has announced that it would acquire professional social platform LinkedIn for USD 26.2 billion all cash deal. Microsoft will finance the transaction primarily through the issuance of new indebtedness. Post the acquisition, Jeff Weiner will remain the CEO of LinkedIn and will report to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

  5. Mercedes- Lewis Hamilton of Britain won the Formula 1 Canada Grand Prix title held in Canada this Sunday. This is his second win this season. His teammate Nice Rosberg secured second position and Sebastian Vettel secured third position in the same race. Nico Hülkenberg of Force India team finished at ninth position.

  6. Donald Carr, former captain of England Cricket team passed away this week. He was 89. His career spanned from 1945 to 1968 in which he scored nearly 20000 runs and claimed 328 wickets for Oxford University, Derbyshire, and England. He retired from cricket in 1986.

  1. India-s retail inflation. Measured by Consumer Price Index, jumped to 5.76% in May due to higher food process compared to 5.01% in May last year. Overall food inflation jumped up to 7.55% in May, from 6.32% in April.

  2. India-s overall inflation, measured by the Wholesale Price Index, increased to 0.79% in May due to higher increase in vegetable prices. WPI inflation stood at 0.34% in April this year, and at (-) 2.2% in May last year. Wholesale food inflation rose to 7.88% in May compared to 4.23% in April which pushed the overall inflation higher.
    Manufactured products inflation inched up to 0.91% in May, from 0.71% in April and Fuel and power inflation stood at (-) 6.14% in May.

  3. Maharashtra state government has recently launched a task force named as Vasantrao Naik Shetkari Swavalamban Mission (VNSSM headed by agriculture field expert Kishor Tiwari in order to bring at least 80% of the farmers under the purview of institutional credit net.

  4. Additional Solicitor General of India and former Parliamentarian Satya Pal Jain has been appointed as a part-time member of the 21st Law Commission of India. The appointment will be in addition to his charge as an Additional Solicitor General of India.

  5. Tata Power Company has acquired the renewable energy (RE) subsidiary of Delhi-based Welspun Renewables Energy Pvt Ltd (WREPL) for around Rs 9,9000 crore which also marks the largest transaction in renewables space in India till now. WREPL has one of the largest operating solar portfolios in India spread across ten states. It has about 1,140 megawatts (MW) of renewable power projects comprising about 990 MW solar power projects and about 150 MW of wind power projects.

  6. Famous playwright and actor Achyut Lahkar passed away this week. He was 85. He is the founder of Nataraj Theatre, the first mobile theatre company of Assam in 1963.

He will replace the current General Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft.

  1. Union Cabinet has cleared the new Civil Aviation Policy today in order to increase regional air connectivity, and ease rules for airlines to fly overseas. It will help bring down the prices of air tickets by giving exemptions including service tax, customs duty, landing and parking fee and VAT. As per new policy, the airfares have been fixed at 2,500 rupees for one-hour long flights and removed the rule which restricted companies from flying abroad unless they have flown in India for 5 years and have fleet size of 20 aircraft.

  2. The Union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the takeover of its different subsidiaries by State Bank of India (SBI) of several subsidiaries. These are five SBI subsidiaries and state-run Bharatiya Mahila Bank, a bank for women set up in 2013. The combined entity will have an asset base of almost Rs 37 lakh crore, with 22,500 branches and 58,000 ATMs.

  3. DBS Bank India, a part of Asia's foremost financial services group DBS Group Holdings Limited, has appointed Niraj Mittal as the Managing Director and Head of Institutional Banking for the country. He will report to Jeanette Wong, who is a Group Executive and Head of Institutional Banking Group in Singapore and Surojit Shome, CEO of DBS India.

  4. Kolhapur-headquartered private sector lender RBL Bank (formerly known as The Ratnakar Bank Limited) has appointed Brijesh Mehra as the head of corporate banking at RBL.

  5. Ranu Langthasa was unanimously chosen as the chairperson of the NC Hills Autonomous Council in Assam at a special session held in the NCHAC. With this, she became the first women chairperson since its inception in 1951.

  6. Famous Hindi novelist and critic Mudrarakshas passed away. He was 82. His original name was Subhash Chandra and he wrote novels and other forms of Hindi prose.

  1. Canadian Novelist and Poet, Margaret Atwood was awarded with PEN Pinter Prize 2016. She will receive her award at a public event at the British Library later in October this year. The prize was founded by Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter in 2009.

  2. Central Bank of the USA, Federal Reserve has kept the key interest rates unchanged at 0.25-0.5%. Lower payroll for May month and upcoming Brexit decision later this month were the main reasons to keep interest rate unchanged for now.

  3. The Rio 2016 Olympic organising committee has revealed the official slogan for the first Olympic and Paralympic Games in South America, -A new world-while unveiling the medals. Along with the Olympic torch, the medals, the mascots, the slogan also plays a major part in creating the unique identity of each Olympic Games.

  1. Thefirst batch of three female pilots - Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh were inducted in Indian Air Force fighter squadron for the first time in the history of IAF. On successful completion of their training, the trio were formally commissioned by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

  2. Senior IASofficer Supriya Sahu has been appointed as the full-time director general of the state broadcaster Doordarshan.

  3. Senior legal service officer Suresh Chandra has been appointed as Union Law Secretary.Before this, G Narayana Raju, Legislative Secretary, was holding additional charge of the post.

  4. US President Barack Obama has nominated Indian origin Kamala Shirin as US Ambassador to Malaysia. She will replace Joseph Y Yun.

  5. Founder chairman of Bharti Airtel Sunil Bharti Mittal has been elected as the head of International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), based in Paris, France. He is the 3rd Indian Business leader to head ICC. He will replace Terry McGraw, Chairman Emeritus of S&P Global.

  6. Kerala Tourism won four awards at -FilmAT- which is one of the biggest international film festivals dedicated to tourism, art and ecology in Poland. Three of the honours were given to a single campaign.

  7. Former Indian football team coach Syed Nayeemuddin will be honoured with Mohun Bagan Ratna for his overall contribution to the club and the country. He is the only sportsperson to win both the Arjuna and Dronacharya Awards for football.

  8. Australia defeated India by 3-1 in the final of Champions Trophy Hockey tournament in London this week to Win Champions Trophy. India settled for silver.

  3. First International day for Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict was observed on 19thJune across the world to raise awareness for the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence.

  4. Virginia Raggi, a leading member of the populist anti-corruption Five Star Movement (M5S) was elected as Rome-s first female mayor.She, aged 38, is also the youngest mayor in Rome's history. She was elected after winning 67% of the vote in a runoff ballot against the Democratic Party-s (PD) Roberto Giachetti.

  5. German Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg won the European Grand Prix championship which was held in Baku, Azerbaijan on 19thJune.Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel secured second place while Sergio Perez of Force India secured third place in the same race.

  1. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched a record 20 satellites in a single mission from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh today. The launch has been made by using Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-34, carrying India-s latest earth observation satellite Cartosat-2 along with 19 co-passengers satellites from US, Canada, Germany, Indonesia and two Indian academic institutions.

  2. An expert committee headed by Anand Desai which was set up to examine the Specific Relief Act, 1963 has submitted its report to Union Law and Justice minister Sadananda Gowda this week. The committee stressed on the need for change in the present scheme of act so that specific performance is granted as a general rule and grant of compensation or damages for non-performance remains as an exception.

  3. India has been ranked at 10thposition in FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) inflows, as per the 2016 World Investment Report released recently. As per the report, India-s FDI inflows have jumped to USD 44 billion in 2015 compared to USD 35 billion in 2014.

  4. The Central government has announced fresh liberalisation of FDI rules throwing open food retail, airlines and private security firms for FDI.Other sectors in which FDI norms have been relaxed include e-commerce in food products, broadcasting carriage services, private security agencies and animal husbandry.

  • Upto 74% FDI in brownfield pharmaceuticals under automatic route

  1. SoftBank Group has named Ken Miyauchi as its new President and Chief Operating Officer after the resignation of Nikesh Arora. Nikesh Arora resigned a day after Softbank announced that an independent committee has found that the investors- allegations against Nikesh Arora were without merit.

  2. Former cricketer Chetan Chauhan has been appointed as the chairman of the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology. He is also the vice-president of Delhi and District Cricket Association and a senior BCCI official.

  3. Kannada film Thithi won top awards at the ongoing 19th Shanghai International Film Festival. It has won the Best Film and Best Script Writers in the Asia New Talent Awards at the festival.

  4. Famous educationist and founder of Jeppiaar Educational Trust Jesadimai Jeppiaar passed away in Chennai.He was 85. at the age of 85 in Chennai following a chest congestion. He had a major contribution in the setting up of private engineering institutions in Tamil Nadu and was the founder chancellor of Sathyabama University.

  1. World Hydrography Day 2016 was observed on 21st June across the world. The theme for 2016 was 'Hydrography - the key to well-managed seas and waterways' which drew attention to the fundamental importance of hydrography.

  2. International Widows' Day was observed on 23rd June across the world. It was first recognized by the UN in 2010. It was introduced to address poverty and injustice faced by widows and their children in many countries.

  3. In a historic referendum of British history, 51.9% voters of UK have voted for Brexit. Compared to 48.1% of UK voters who have favoured to remain in European Union. With this, UK will now be exited from European Union. Northern Ireland, London and Scotland regions voted in favour of Remain while Wales and rest of England had voted for Brexit.

  4. Prime Minister of United Kingdom (UK) David Cameron announced his resignation hours after the Brexit vote that favoured leaving the European Union (EU). During the campaign, Cameron-led Conserve Party campaigned for UK to remain with the EU though some of his party members campaigned for Brexit.

  5. Mahasthangarh, the 3rd century BC archaeological site in Bogra, Bangladesh, has been declared as the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SARRC) cultural capital for the year 2016-17. As an SARRC cultural capital, the historic place will host festivals on literature, films, foods and dances from October 2016 to September 2017.

  6. Ken Miyauchi has been appointed as the President and COO of SoftBank Group. He will replace Nikesh Arora who has recently resigned.

  7. Hockey winger of Russian Hockey team Artemi Panarin won the 2015-16 Calder Memorial Trophy. He received votes on all 150 ballots and he was the top choice on 88 for 1258 voting points. Shayne Gostisbehere of the Philadelphia Flyers stood at the second position and Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers bagged the third place.

  8. Famous Pakistani singer Amjad Sabri was shot dead in the southern city of Karachi by some unknown gunmen. Known for his soul-stirring renditions of mystic poetry, he was one of the finest Pakistani qawali singers.

  1. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently launched a record 20 satellites in 26 minutes from Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The 20 satellites including India's latest earth observation satellite Cartosat-2 was launched onboard Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV C-34.   2. The Central Government has launched a pilot programme to run two-wheelers on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in New Delhi in order to reduce air pollution in cities. ii. The project was jointly launched by Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar at the CGO Complex CNG station.

  3. IIT-Kanpur professor Sanjay Mittal has been awarded the twenty-fifth GD Birla Award for Scientific Research for the year 2015 for his significant contributions have been in the area of Mechanics.

  4. Indian IT Services Company Tech Mahindra Ltd (TechM) acquired UK-based digital transformation firm The BIO Agency Ltd for around 45 million pounds. This acquisition will help Tech Mahindra to strengthen its digital portfolio to provide better digital services to the clients.

  5. Global payments platform, PayPal has appointed Anupam Pahuja as Country Manager and MD for its India operations.

She became the first Indian athlete ever to win a medal in a World Athletics Championships in Paris in 2003.

  11. Neil O-Brien, a leader of the Anglo-Indian community who is credited with pioneering quizzing in the country, passed away in Kolkata. He was 82. He conducted the first well-organized, formal quiz in 1967 at Christ the King Church Parish Hall in Calcutta.

  3. The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture was observed on 26th June across the world. The General Assembly proclaimed 26 June as the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture in December 1997.

  4. Legendary street-style fashion photographer Bill Cunningham passed away this week in New York. He was 87. He worked for the New York Times for around 40 years.

  5. Chile defeated Argentina in the finals of 2016 Copa America tournament to win the title. The match went to Penalty shootout as no team was able to score during normal as well as extra time. Argentina Superstar Lionel Messi declared his retirement from International football after he remained title less for his team. He has won eight La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues with Spanish side Barcelona.

  1. India has been ranked at 105th out of 130 countries based on the World Economic Forum's Human Capital Index, which measures countries- ability to nurture, develop and deploy talent for economic growth, as per data released by the World Economic Forum (WEF). Finland topped the index.

  2. India has joined the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) as its 35thmember in order to enhance its non proliferation credentials. This also marks India's first entry into any multilateral export control regime and it will improve its own export controls, which will help it to justify transferring sensitive technology to India in front of other MTCR members.

  3. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appinted NS Vishwanathan as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).He is currently working as an executive director at the RBI since April 2014 and overseeing the banking regulation and non-banking department. He will succeed H R Khan, who will retire on 3rdJuly.

  4. An Indian social entrepreneur Zubaida Bai, has been named among 10 "champions and pioneers" by United Nation chief Ban Ki-moon under the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative that calls on companiesto align with universal principles of human rights, environment, and anti-corruption. Zubaida Bai is the founder of 'AYZH' which is a for-profit social venture providing health and livelihood solutions to impoverished women worldwide.

  5. Spiritual guru shri shri Ravi Shankar was awarded with the honorary fellowship by national Indian students and alumni union (NISAU) in UK for his contributions to world peace and culture. NISAU mentioned Guru Ravi Shankar's efforts towards a violence-free society, his social and cultural contributions to India and for furthering Yoga, Meditation and Spiritual Studies in a global context.

  6. Senior World Bank official Sujoy Bose has been appointed as the CEO of national Investment and infrastructure Fund (NIIF).Currently, he is working as the Director and Global Co-Head, Infrastructure and Natural Resources, International Finance Corporation(IFC), Washington DC.

  7. Famous Malayalam theatre artiste Kavalam Narayana Panicker passed away in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.He was 88. His famous works include Madhyamaka Yogam, Kalidasa's Vikramorvasiyam, Shakuntalam, Karnabharam, Bhasa's Urubhangam, Swapnavasavadattam and Doota Vakyam. He was awarded with Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1983 and with Sangeet Natak Akademi fellowship in 2002. He also received the Padma Bhushan in 2007.

He was also the first recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1991-92, India's highest sporting honour. In 2007, he was awarded India's second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan.

  4. India-s biggest Milk Producer Amul has signed up as the official sponsor for the Indian contingent to the Rio Olympics 2016. The company will launch a series of advertising campaigns for milk and other dairy products to promote this association.

  5. The Defence Ministry has approved the purchase of 145 Ultra-Light Howitzers, worth about USD 750 million, from USA.

  6. Famous modern art painter K G Subramanyam passed away this week. He was 92. He was a freedom fighter and was jailed briefly during the Quit India Movement. He was awarded with Padma Vibhushan by Indian Government.
