  1. India-sindigenously built Light combat aircraft 'Tejas- have been inducted in Indian Air Force with maker Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) handed over the first two Tejas aircraft to IAF. Tejas will replace the MiG-21 series and this is a significant steps towards -Make In India- initiatives.

  2. Four Indian Americans including Google CEO Sundar Pichai were named in the list of 42 US nationals to be honoured with this year's prestigious "Great Immigrants: The Pride of America" award for their inspiring professional accomplishments. The other three Indian-Americans are Hari Sreenivasan, anchor and senior correspondent, PBS NewsHour, Vikram Malhotra Chairman of the Americas, McKinsey & Company and Bharati Mukherjee National, Book Critics Circle Award-winning author.

  1. President of India, Pranab Kumar Mukherjee has presented the Dr. B C Roy national awards for 2008, 2009 and 2010 at Rashtrapati Bhavan this week on the occasion of National Doctor-s Day on 1stJuly. Top Five Awardees are Dr. Mammen Chandy, Prof. Rajeshwar Dayal, Dr. Rohit V. Bhatt, Dr. Neelam Mohan and Prof. Mohan Kameswaran.

  2. Indian PSU Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. (BEML) has appointed D K Hota as the chairman and Managing Director.Currently he is working as the Director (HR) on the board of the company. He will replace P Dwarakanath.

  3. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the "Payment and Settlement Systems in India: Vision-2018" in order to build a "less-cash" society by encouraging greater use of electronic payments by all sections. As per report, RBI would frame policy that would increase access to mobile banking services even to non-smartphone users in multiple languages. Also RBI will review guidelines relating to mobile banking, ATM, NEFT and other prepaid methods to improve payment systems.

  4. India-s E Commerce giant FlipKart has formed a Joint Venture with bike maker Royal Enfield to sell its branded gears and accessories, which is also for the first time for Royal Enfield.

  5. Norwegian football club Stabaek FC has chosen Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu for their Europa league qualifying match against Welsh Premier League side Connah's Quay Nomads FC. With this, he became the first Indian player to play in the Welsh Premier League.

  6. FamousMarathi author R C Dhere passed away this week. He was 86. He was known for his research in folk literature and Bhakti tradition of Maharashtra.

  7. Indian sprinter Sameer Mon won gold in 100 meter dash in 10.60 seconds at the 56th National Inter-state Senior Athletics Championships held in Hyderabad. He also broke the earlier record and became the fastest athlete of India.

  1. China has completed building the final piece into position to make world-s largest radio telescope. The Five Hundred Metre Aperture Spherical Telescope, or Fast, is the size of 30 football fields and has been cut out of a mountain in the south-western province of Guizhou.

  2. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the 2016 Austrian Grand prix held in Austria this Sunday. Max Verstappen of Red Bull team stood second and Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari stood third in the same race.

  3. A holocaust survivor, Nobel peace prize winner and an author who fought for peace & human rights, Elie Wiesel recently passed away in Israel. He was 87. He won the nobel peace prize in 1986. He wrote 57 books in his lifetime.

  4. Former French Prime Minister, Michel Rocard, passed away.He was 85. He served as Prime Minister under President Francois Mitterrand from 1988 to 1991.

  5. Famous award winning Iranian Filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami passed away.He was 76. He directed more than 40 films in a span of his five decades long career. His "Taste of Cherry" film won him the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997.

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expanded his Cabinet by inducting 19 new ministers in the government while one has been elevated to the cabinet rank.President Pranab Mukherjee administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new Ministers at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Minister of State with independent charge Prakash Javdekar was elevated to the rank of Cabinet Minister who has been HRD ministry.

The Ministers of State are Faggan Singh Kulste, S.S. Ahluwalia, Ramesh Jigjinagi, Vijay Goel, Ramdas Athawale, Rajen Gohain, Anil Madhav Dave, Parshottam Rupala, M.J.   1. Union Cabinet has approved the implementation of seventh pay commission for its more than 1 crore employees with an overall hike of 23.5%.The new scales of pay provide for entry-level basic pay going up from Rs. 7,000 per month to Rs 18,000, while at the highest level i.e. Secretary, it will jumpe from Rs 90,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh. For Class 1 officers, the starting salary will be Rs 56,100.

  2. India-s ranking jumped by 19 places to 35th Rank as per the World Bank's global logistics performance ranking published for 2015.Belgium topped the list followed by Austria, United Kingdom, Hong Kong and the United States. Syria is ranked lowest in the list.

  3. Rajasthan has become the first Indian state to introduce minimum wages for part-time workers, as per notification issued by the Labour Department. It is now mandatory to pay 50% of the prescribed a day minimum wage to a person who works for less than four hours in a day.
    5. Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) become the first port in India to implement Logistics Data tagging of containers which will help importers and exporters track goods in transit through logistics data bank service. As a part of this scheme, the containers will be attached with a Radio Frequency Identification Tag (RFID) and will be tracked through RFID readers installed at different locations.

  4. Sudarshan Sen has been appointed as the Executive Director of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He will replace NS Vishwanathan who was elevated as Deputy Governor of RBI. In his new role, Sudarshan Sen will look after Department of Banking Regulation, Department of Co-operative Bank Regulation and Department of Non-Banking Regulation.

  5. Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (ABFRL has acquired global clothing brand 'Forever 21' in the Indian market for USD 26 million. Forever 21 is among the fastest growing fashion retailers in the world with a network of more than 700 stores worldwide.

  6. Indian Shuttler B Sai Praneeth won the Canada Open Grand Prix Badminton Men's Singles title at Calgarythis week after defeating Korea's Lee Hyun Il by 21-12 21-10 in the singles final.

  1. India has been ranked at 91stposition in the recently released 2016 Networked Readiness Index (NRI) by the World Economic Forum (WEF).It was ranked at 93rd position last year. India was ranked at lowest position among BRICS countries.

The 2016 Networked Readiness Index (NRI) is topped by Singapore followed by Finland, Sweden, Norway, United States, Netherlands, Switzerland, UK, Luxembourg and Japan.

  1. The Finance Ministry of Government of India has constituted a four members committee to examine the feasibility of changing a new financial year to January-December from April-March. The Committee will be headed by former Chief Economic Adviser Dr. Shankar Acharya and will have Shri K.M. Chandrasekhar (former Cabinet Secretary), Shri P.V. Rajaraman (former Finance Secretary, Tamil Nadu) and Dr. Rajiv Kumar (Senior Fellow, Centre for Policy Research) as other Members.

  2. The governing council of Film & Television has given its approval to the conversion of FTII into Digital Media University with 22 new courses. The suggestions were given by the Academic Council of FTII headed by producer BP Singh.

  1. The USA has sanctioned leader of North Korea Kim Jong-Un citing notorious abuses of Human rights. The sanctions target any North Koreans for rights abuse and also affect property and other assets within the U.S. jurisdiction.

  2. Travel planning and booking site TripAdvisor has appointed Gary Fritz as its Chief Growth Officer and President of the Asia-Pacific region. In his new role, he will be responsible for leading the company's operations and strategy throughout the Asia Pacific region.

  3. South African writer Lidudumalingani Mqombothi won the '2016 The Caine Prize' for African Writing for his story -Memories we Lost-. The prize, launched in 2000, is awarded annually to an African writer of a short story published in English.

  4. Famous Noted Pakistani philanthropist and social activist Abdul Sattar Edhi passed away in Karachi. He was 88. He was the founder and head of the Edhi Foundation in Pakistan and was known as Angel of Mercy, Pakistan-s -Father Teresa- and was considered country-s most respected figure.

India and South Africa have signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in four areas of co-operation after a delegation-level talks headed by Prime Minister Narendara Modi and South African President Jacob Zuma in Pretoria, South Africa. These MoUs are on cooperation in the area of information and communication technology, tourism sector, innovation in the science and technology and the last one for arts and culture.

  2. The Kerala government has imposed 14.5% fat tax on junk foods including burgers, pizzas, pasta etc. The move was presented by Finance Minister Dr. T.M. Thomas Issac during first budget of the CPI(M)-led LDF Government, first by a Indian state.

  3. Sanjay Gupta has been appointed as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL).Before this, he was working as Director (Operating and Commercial) of KRCL.

  4. The Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) has awarded Srinivasan K Swamy, Chairman of R K Swamy Hansa, with this year-s AAAI Lifetime AchievementAward for his outstanding contribution in the advertising industry

  5. Senior Indian Defence Accounts Service officer S K Kohli has been appointed as Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA).The CGDA is mandated to audit, payment and accounting of all charges pertaining to the armed forces, including bills for supplies and services rendered and for construction and repair works, pay and allowances and pensions, among others.

  6. IDFC Mutual Fund has appointed Mr. Vishal Kapoor as its chief executive officer. Currently, he is working with Standard Chartered Bank as the managing director and head of wealth management for India business.

  7. Radhika Menon became the first woman in the world to receive the Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea for 2016, from the International Maritime Organisation, IMO. She will be awarded for saving the lives of seven fishermen.

  8. Famous music director Om Prakash Sonik, of the well-known duo Sonik-Omi, passed away this week. He was 77.The Sonik-Omi team which provided music to nearly 125 Bollywood movies in the 1950-1980s.

  9. Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar was named a -Gymnaste de Classe Mondaile- (World class gymnast) by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), first-ever Indian gymnast to receive the honour. She was awarded with the Arjuna Award in August 2015.

Serena Williams defeated Germany's Angelique Kerber by 7-5 6-3 to win her seventh Wimbledon Women-s singles title. With this she equalled Steffi Graf's professional era record of 22 grand slam singles crowns.
Britain's Heather Watson and Finland-s Henri Kontinen won the Wimbledon mixed doubles crown after defeating 15th seeds Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany and Colombian Roberto Farah 7-6, 6-4 in the final match.
Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams won the women-s doubles title after defeating fifth seeds Timea Babos of Hungary and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan by 6-3, 6-4, their sixth Wimbledon doubles title.

  1. Barcelona's Argentinian star Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months in prison and fined 2 million euros after being found guilty of three counts of tax fraud, a court in the Spanish city said last week. The court handed the same jail sentence to the Argentine soccer player's father, Jorge, and fined him 1.5 million euros.

  2. UK-s Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes team won the British Grand Prix held this Sunday which is his third win in a row. Max Verstappen of Red Bull secured second position while Germany-s Nico Rosberg of Mercedes secured third position in the same race. Force India-Mercedes- Sergio Pérez and Nico Hülkenberg secured fifth and sixth position respectively.

Indian e-commerce fashion retailer Myntra has acquired Cubeit, a Bengaluru-based tech start-up focused on content aggregation on mobile.Cubeit, led by co-founders Sarthak Jain, Nithinkumar Gadiparthi and Prathamesh Juvatkar, was founded in 2014 and focuses on building mobile applications which allow users to aggregate content from anywhere, organise, view and share the same from a given location.

  2. Former India footballer and first professional football coach of the country Amal Dutta passed away in his Kolkata residence. He was 86. He played in midfield for East Bengal in the 1950s and represented India in the 1954 Asian Games at Manila.

  1. A five-member tribunal appointed by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in Hague, the Netherlands, has rejected China's claims today to economic rights across large swathes of South China Sea, a case brought by the Philippines. Judges said that there was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights to resources within the sea areas falling within the 'nine-dash line, referring to a demarcation line on a 1947 map of the sea, which is rich in energy, mineral and fishing resources. The ruling was rejected by Chinese Government.

  2. Sushila Karki has been appointed as the first woman chief Justice of Nepal by the parliamentary panel. Earlier she was recommended for the top judicial post in April this year by the Judicial Council.

  3. India has held the second position after Australia, in the latest ICC Test rankings released in Dubai today.Ravichandran Ashwin topped the all-rounders list and secured second spot in bowling. In batting, Australia's Steve Smith topped the list followed by Kane Williamson of New Zealand and South Africa's Hashim Amla.

  1. Bollywood superstars Shahrukh Khan and Akshay Kumar are listed among the world-s highest-paid celebrities of 2016, as per an annual list published by Forbes. Shah Rukh has been ranked at 86th on the list with earnings of USD 33 million, while Akshay stood at 94th spot with USD 31.5 million earnings. The list has been topped by American singer Taylor Swift with an earnings of USD 170 million.

  2. Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has conferred the 51st Jnanpith Award on the famous writer Dr. Raghuveer Chaudharifor his "outstanding contribution towards literature".

  3. Nirma Ltd acquired 100% stake of Lafarge India from Lafarge-Holcim for around USD 1.4 billion.The deal is subjected to approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI). Lafarge India operates three cement plants and two grinding stations with a total capacity of around 11 million tonnes per annum.

  4. India-s Index of Industrial production or IIP grew by 1.2% in May compared to same month last year mainly due to increase in consumer durables output. The manufacturing sector grew 0.7%, power generation grew by 4.7% and mining sector output grew by 1.3% during the month.

  5. India-s Retail inflation, measured by Consumer Price Index, jumped to 22-month high of 5.77% in June compared to 5.76% in the previous month. As per Government data, overall food inflation rose to 7.79% in June which dashed any rate cut hope by the RBI as the CPI data is higher than 5% level set by the central bank. Retail inflation in rural areas stood at 6.2% while in urban areas it stood at 5.26% in June.

  6. Indian Hockey teams for Men and Women for the Rio Olympics have been announced today. In a surprise move, skipper Sardar Singh has been removed from captaincy and Goalkeeper P R Sreejesh has been appointed to lead the team. In Women's, Sushila Chanu will lead the team instead of former captain Ritu Rani.

  1. The Supreme Court has ordered the restoration of former Chief Minister Nabam Tuki's Congress government in Arunachal Pradesh, a fresh blow to Central Government after Uttarakhand Fiasco. A five-judge constitution bench pronounced the verdict on a bunch of petitions dealing with discretionary powers of Governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa to summon or advance the assembly session.

  2. Indian Navy has commissioned INS Karna, an independent base of Marine Commandos (MARCOS) at Bheemunipatanam Naval Base in Visakhapatnam. The Marine Commando Force (MCF) was raised as the Indian Marine Special Force (IMSF) in February 1987 at INS Abhimanyu in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

  3. K V R Murthy has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Jute Corporation of India Limited effective from 2ndJuly. The Jute Corporation of India Ltd. (JCI) is based in Kolkata which assists jute cultivators in states.

  4. IDFC Bank has acquired Tamil Nadu-headquartered microfinance institution Grama Vidiyal in an all-cash deal. This acquisition will give IDFC Bank access to Grama Vidiyal-s 12 lakh customers across seven States along with more than 300 branches.

  5. The Central Government has launched -Operation Sankat Mochan- to evacuate the Indians from South Sudan by using two C17 aircraft of Indian Air Force. Minister of State for External Affair VK Singh was expected to lead the operation.

  6. India-s overall inflation, measured by the Wholesale price Index, jumped to 1.62% in June compared to 0.79% in May due to costlier food and manufacturing items. Wholesale inflation in vegetables climbed to 16.91% cent in June while Inflation in the manufactured items category stood at 1.17%.

  7. Ashok Patnaik has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID), an ambitious intelligence gathering mechanism conceived in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Before this, he was serving as an additional director in the Intelligence Bureau.

The Central Government has formeda high level committee, headed by Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian, to review the minimum support price (MSP) and bonus for pulses.The committee is expected to submit its report within two weeks and it will suggest an appropriate policy to promote cultivation of lentils in India and find the measure to contain the rising prices of pulses in the country.

  2. Rajesh Kumar Chaturvedi, a 1987- batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for a five-year term.

  3. India-s total exports jumped by 1.27% in June compared to same month last year to USD 22.57 billion, reversing a negative trend that started in December 2014. Total imports dropped by 7.33% in the same month to USD 30.69 billion. With this, total trade deficit in June dropped to USD 8.1 billion from USD 10.8 billion in the same month last year.

  4. The cabinet committee on Economic Affairs has approved the disinvestment of 15% paid-up equity in NBCC India Ltd. from government's 90% share-holding which aims to raise around Rs 1,700 crore.

  5. Indian boxing star Vijender Singh Won the WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title with a dominating win over former WBC European champion Kerry Hope on Saturday night, scaling a new high in his professional career.The 30-year-old Indian took all 10 rounds to systematically dismantle his opening and record his seventh straight win in the circuit.

  6. Indian chess player Harika Dronavalli won the Fide Women's Grand Prix by defeating Russia's Olga Girya held in China. She finished on seven points in the round robin tournament featuring the world's top 12 players to be crowned the chess queen in Chengdu, her first GP title.

  7. India-s ranking jumped by 11 places to 152nd spot in the latest world football rankings issued by FIFA this week. India defeated Laos 6-1 and 1-0 in the home and away play-off matches to make it to the 2019 Asian Cup qualifying tournament.

Iran (39th) remain Asia's number one ranked team, followed by Korea Republic (48th), Uzbekistan (56th), Japan (57th) and Australia (59th). Argentina remained on top followed by Belgium, Colombia, Germany and Chile.

Nelson Mandela International Day was obersvered across the world on 18thJuly in honour of Nelson Mandela which is his birthday to take action to make the world a better place.The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010.

The Indian travel agency Yatra Online has entered into a merger agreement with a Nasdaq-listed firm Terrapin 3 Acquisition Corp (TRTL) in which the later acquired Yatra online for USD 218 million. Yatra was founded in 2006 and emerged as the fastest growing consumer travel platforms and online travel agents in India.

The Supreme Court accepted major recommendations of the Lodha Committee on reforms in BCCI including a bar on ministers and civil servants and those above 70 years of age from becoming its members. At the same time, the apex court left it to the Parliament to decide whether it should come under RTI and if betting on the game should be legalized.

  2. Pema Khandu of the Congress took oath as the 10th chief minister of Arunachal on Sunday at the age of 37, becoming the youngest serving CM of the country. After taking oath, he also announced the formation of `Team Arunachal' to carry forward development works in the state.

  3. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered immediate banning of diesel vehicles more than 10 years old in Delhi in order to deal with pollution in the national capital. The green panel has directed the Regional Transport Office, Delhi to cancel the registration of all diesel vehicles that are older than 10 years.

  4. UNESCO has declared Nalanda Mahavihara as 33rd World Heritage Site in India. The ruins have large number of remains of stupas, shrines and viharas and important art works in stucco, stone and metal.

  5. The Reserve Bank of India has set up a committee, headed by Executive Director of the RBI Sudharshan Sen, to study some issues related to financial technology and digital banking. The committee is expected to review and restructure the regulatory framework, based on the dynamics fast-developing Fintech.

  6. Dipika Pallikal Karthik defeated defending champion Joshna Chinappa to regain the women's title in the 73rd Senior National Squash Championship in Mumbai while Saurav Ghosal created history by winning it for the 11th time in men-s category.

  7. Indian boxing start who turned professional boxer recently, Vijender Singh, won the WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title at the Thyagraj Stadium, New Delhi after defeating former WBC European champion Kerry Hope.   2. The World Bank Group has appointed Paul Romer as Chief Economist with effect from September 2016.Currently he is working as a professor at New York University (NYU), Director of NYU's Marron Institute of Urban Management, and a professor of economics in NYU's Stern School of Business.

  3. Japan's Softbank acquired Cambridge-based technology giant ARM Holdings for USD 32 billion. The board of ARM is expected to recommend shareholders accept the offer - which is around a 43% premium on its closing market value of 16.8 billion pound. ARM was founded in 1990 and employs more than 3,000 people.

  1. The Ministry of Finance has announced the much-awaited capital infusion of Rs 22,915 crore towards the recapitalization of 13 public sector banks during financial year 2016-17.The largest amount of Rs 7,575 crore will be given to India-ss largest lender, the State Bank of India.

  2. IndianFMCG major Dabur has acquired South Africa-based Discaria Trading (PTY) Ltd for an undisclosed amount. Dabur International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dabur has completely acquired (100% share) Discaria Trading in South Africa. The South Africa based firm is engaged in manufacturing and trading of cosmetics.

  3. Guruprasad Mohapatra, a 1986 batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer, has been appointed the chairman of Airports Authority of India (AAI).Before this, he was posted as Joint Secretary in Union Ministry of Commerce and had served as Municipal Commissioner of Ahmedabad for over three years.

  4. Former Indian cricketer and Member of Parliament Navjot Singh Sidhu has resigned from his Rajya Sabha seat on the first day of the Monsoon Session. He is expected to Join AAP before Punjab Assembly Election.

His project titled 'FishErmen Lifeline Terminal (FELT)' won him USD 10,000 in funding and a year-long mentorship from Scientific American. The project looks at how to enhance fishermen safety and productivity using GPS (Global Positioning Services).

  1. Seven Indian companies are placed in the latest Fortune 500 list of the world's biggest corporations in terms of revenue published by Fortune yesterday. Indian Oil Corporation ranked highest at 161st place with revenue of USD 54.7 billion followed by Reliance Industries (215), Tata Motors (226), SBI (232), Bharat Petroleum (358) and Hindustan Petroleum (367) and Rajesh Exports (423) while ONCG failed to secure place in the list.

The list is topped by the retail giant Walmart with revenue of USD 482.13 billion followed by State Grid and China National Petroleum.

  3. The Central Government has formed a committee, headed by the retired Justice Giridhar Malviya, to prepare Draft Bill on Ganga to deal with all the issues related to the River. The committee will submit its report within three months.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has reformed the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for Land Acquisition Bill and appointed Ganesh Singh as the Chairperson of the Joint Committee of Parliament to examine the Land Acquisition Bill.He replaced S S Ahluwalia, who became Minister of the State for Parliamentary Affairs in reshuffle of the council of ministers on 5 July 2016.

Kerala Tourism has secured two Gold Awards at the prestigious Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) awards for its trendsetting marketing initiatives. The two gold medals for 'Marketing Media' are in the categories of 'Travel Advertisement Broadcast Media' and 'E-Newsletter', which were won by the successful 'Visit Kerala' television commercial campaign and the popular Kerala Tourism E-Newsletter respectively.

  6. The Central Government has appointed Ajay Bhushan Pandey as the Chief Executive Officer of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) with effective from this month.   7. Famous Journalist and Doordarshan News Correspondent in Hyderabad, Sanjiv Thomas passed away. He was 59. He joined Doordarshan Hyderabad Kendra as a Research Officer in 1985 and served the Public Broadcaster as a News Correspondent since 1986.

  8. Modern Indian artist S H Raza has passed away after a prolonged illness. He was 94. He is an internationally acclaimed painter and was awarded with the Padma Shri by the Indian government. He was elected as a fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1983.

  9. India test team captain Virat Kohli has become the first Indian captain to score a double century outside India after he scored 200 runs during first test against West Indies.

  10. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in the IAAF Under-20 World Athletics Championship at Bydgoszcz in Poland and also created history this weekby becoming first Indian Junior athlete to create a World Record. He created a new U-20 world record by throwing the javelin a distance of 86.48 m and broke the old mark of 84.69 metres held by Latvian Zigismunds Sirmais.

  1. Before the non-confidence vote in Nepal's parliament, Prime Minister K P Oli has resigned from his office.He became Prime Minister of Nepal in October 2015 but has been facing a no-trust motion after the Maoists withdrew support from the coalition government.

China has unveiled AG600, the world's largest aircraft which can land on both water and land and can be used to fight forest fires and perform marine rescues. The aircraft is around the size of a Boeing 737 which is much larger than any other amphibious plane. It has a maximum flight range of 4,500 km and can collect 12 tonnes of water in 20 seconds during emergencies.

  3. American telecoms giant Verizon Communications acquired US Internet company Yahoo for around USD 5 billion in an all cash deal. Post this deal, Verizon plans to combine this with AOL which it bought last year. The deal, which does not include Yahoo's valuable stake in Chinese online giant Alibaba, is expected to close by the first quarter of next year.

  4. Swedish mobile telecoms telecom company Ericsson has announced resignation of its Chief Executive Officer Hans Vestberg from his post with immediate effect. He has been the company's CEO since 2010. Current Chief Financial Officer Jan Frykhammar will be the acting CEO, with group treasurer Carl Mellander as acting CFO.

Formula one driver Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix held on 24thJuly to top the drivers- championship table for the first time this season.His teammate Nico Rosberg secured second place and Red Bull-s Daniel Ricciardo secured third place in the race. This is Hamilton-s fifth win at the Hungarian circuit, making him the most successful driver at the same track.

  2. Kolkata-based FMCG and Cigarette Company ITC Ltd has named Sanjiv Puri as Chief Operating Officer of the company who will succeed its longest serving Chairman YC Deveshwar. Mr. Deveshwar is all set to step down from his post in February 2017 and he will continue as a non-executive chairman for three years.

  3. The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of Rs 5 crore on Bank of Baroda for its involvement in an alleged Rs. 6,000 crore forex related irregularities last year. In its investigation, the RBI had found weaknesses and failures in the bank's internal control mechanisms including transaction monitoring, and assigning of Unique Customer Identification Code.

  4. India-s leading IT services company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been ranked as the top employer in the Indian IT industry as per report published by industry body Nasscom. TCS was followed by Infosys, Cognizant, Wipro and Capgemini in the first 5 places.

  5. Indian Online buy-sell platform Quikr has acquired Bengaluru-based online recruitment firm Hiree for an undisclosed amount. Post the deal, Hiree will be merged with the startup's jobs vertical QuikrJobs. Founded in 2014 by former Yahoo executives Manjunath Talwar and Abhijit Khasnis, Hiree is an online hiring platform focused on white collar jobs.

  8. Civil rights activist Irom Sharmila has decided to end her fast on 9th of next month and contest Assembly elections as an Independent candidate. She has been on hunger strike for the last sixteen years demanding repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.

The 44-year-old activist, who has been forcibly fed through a nasal tube since 2000, said she would join politics as she no longer believes that her fast will lead to the repeal of what she tearmed as "draconian" AFSPA. Assembly elections in Manipur are scheduled early next year. In the past, many political leaders have met Sharmila and tried to cajole her into joining politics but she has rejected all offers.

  10. The Central government has appointed Dr. Buddha Rashmi Mani as the Director General of the National Museum for three years or till attaining the age of 70 years. He worked for Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and was part of the team that had discovered remains of a likely temple during excavation at the disputed site in Ayodhya.

  11. Online marketplace Myntra has acquired its rival Jabong from Global Fashion Group to create India-s biggest fashion eCommerce site. Jabong is among India-s major fashion multi-brand e-store with more than 1,500 international brands.

  4. Sri Lankan Spinner Muttaiah Muralitharan will be the first Sri Lankan to be included in the ICC's Hall of Fame. Australia's Arthur Morris and Karen Rolton along with England-s George Lohmann are the other three players who were also chosen for the same.

  1. Finance Ministry notified the revised pay grades for all Central government employees based on the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission. With these, all of them are expected to get higher salary from August 2016 onwards. The revised pay grades, which will be applicable from January 1, 2016 will be reflected in the salaries of August and the arrears will be paid by end of this financial year.

  2. Two Indians, human rights activist Bezwada Wilson and south Indian classical musician TM Krishna , have been conferred with the Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2016.
    Bezwada Wilson , who was born to a dalit family in Karnataka, has been lauded for his efforts towards "asserting the inalienable right to a life of human dignity ." The Chennai-born Carnatic musician TM Krishna has been awarded for " ensuring social inclusiveness in culture."

The four other awardees for 2016 are Conchita Carpio-Morales from the Philippines, Indonesin Dompet Dhuafa, Vientiane Rescue from Laos and the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.

  1. First death anniversary of former President Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam is being observed across the nation today. Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu, Manohar Parikkar, Pon Radhakrishnan laid down the foundation stone of Dr Kalam National memorial at Rameswaram today.

The Lok Sabha has passed the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Bill which prohibits employment of children below 14 years in all occupations except in family business, with the provision for the imprisonment of up to two years for any violation. The Bill also provides enhanced punishment for violators. The penalty for employing a child has been increased to imprisonment between 6 months and two years or a fine of Rs 20,000 to Rs 50,000 or both.

  3. Former diplomat Arundhati Ghose has passed away. She was 76. She was also the first Indian Permanent Representative in the United Nations offices in Geneva and was also a member of the UN Secretary General's Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters from 1998 to 2001.

  1. The World Hepatitis Day is being observed across the world today (28thJuly). The theme this year is 'Elimination'.The goal is to eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.  As per WHO, World Hepatitis Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns. Hepatitis is a group of infectious diseases known as Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. According to WHO Hepatitis affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide, causing acute and chronic disease and killing close to 1.4 million people every year.

Oracle Corp announced to acquire NetSuite Inc for around USD 9.3 billion to expand into the fast-growing cloud market.Oracle has recently focused on moving its business to the cloud-based model, essentially providing services remotely via data centers rather than selling installed software.NetSuite, founded in 1998, pioneered the cloud computing revolution, by creating the first company dedicated to providing business applications over the internet.

The Union Cabinet has approved to increase Individual foreign investment cap to 15% in Indian stock exchanges compared to earlier cap of 5%.Currently, foreign investors, in aggregate, can hold up to 49% stake in any stock or commodity exchange. The Union Cabinet also approved a proposal to allow foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) to acquire shares through initial allotment in stock exchanges.

  2. The Chatterjee Group (TCG) has entered a share purchase agreement with Japanese major Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC) in Tokyo to acquire a majority stake in Kolkata-headquartered MCC PTA India (MCPI),for an undisclosed sum. MCPI makes purified terephthalic acid, better known as PTA. MCPI was also the first major Japanese foreign direct investment in India.

  3. Eminent litterateur and social activist Mahasweta Devi passed away today afternoon at a private hospital in Kolkata. She was 90. She was awarded with Padma Shri in 1986, Padma Vibhusan in 2006 by Indian government along with lots of literary awards. She won Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1997.

  4. Senior IAS officer Aruna Sharma has been appointed as Steel Secretary as part of a major top-level bureaucratic reshuffle effected today by the Central government. A total of 15 new Secretaries have been appointed in various central government ministries. Aruna Sundararajan is now Secretary of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

  5. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed 27 crore rupees penalty on 13 public and private sector banks for violations of Foreign Exchange Management (FEMA) Act (Anti-money laundering) and lapses in Know your customer (KYC) rules. The banks include Bank of Baroda for Rs 5 crore, Punjab National Bank, and Syndicate Bank have been fined Rs 3 crore each. UCO Bank, HDFC Bank, Allahabad Bank, Canara Bank and IndusInd Bank have all been fined Rs 2 crore each.

It has also warned SBI, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Union Bank of India to ensure strict compliance of KYC (know your customer) requirements and FEMA provisions on an ongoing basis.

  1. India-s Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows grew by 7% to USD 10.55 billion during the first quarter (April-June) of the financial year 2016-17 compared to USD 9.88 billion in the same period last financial year.

The sectors, which attracted maximum FDI during the period, include computer hardware and software, services, telecommunications, power, pharmaceuticals and trading business. In terms of countries, India received maximum overseas inflows from the US, Singapore, Mauritius, Japan and the Netherlands.

  1. Kolkata's football club East Bengal has announced that Bharat Gaurav award (Pride of India) of 2016 will be conferred on legendary athlete Milkha Singh. He will be honoured with the prestigious award on the East Bengal Foundation Day on 1st of August.

  2. Sunil Kant Munjal, joint managing director at Hero MotoCorp has announced his plan to step down from his position next month to -pursue new business interests-. He is brother of Pawan Munjal, the chairman, managing director and chief executive officer of the company.

  2. American author James Alan McPherson has passed away in Iowa City, U.S. He was 72. He was the first black author to receive the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1978.

  3. Germany football team captain Bastian Schweinsteiger his retirement from international duty with immediate effect this week. The 31-year-old Manchester United midfielder, who won his 120th and final cap in Germany's 0-2 defeat to France in the semifinals of Euro 2016, announced the news on his official Twitter account.

  2. Justice Dilip Babasaheb Bhosale was sworn in as the new chief justice of Allahabad High Court by governor Ram Naik in Allahabad. Before that, he was serving as acting chief justice of high court of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

  3. CK Mishra, a 1983 batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre, has been appointed the new Health Secretary. He will replace BP Sharma, who has been appointed secretary, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
