1. Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has sworn in as the new president of Taiwan after winning the election held earlier this year. She has also become the first female President of the country. She took over from President Ma Ying-jeou, who completed two four-year terms since May 2008.

2. UN General Secretary Ban-Ki-Moon has appointed Mexican diplomat Patricia Espinosa Cantellano as the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). She, currently working as Mexico's ambassador to Germany, will succeed Christiana Figueres of Costa Rica.

3. European football club Sevilla has become the first football club to win the Europa League title three consecutive times after defeating Liverpool in the final match. With this, Sevilla won 5 Europa League titles, in 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
