1. Mother Teresa was declared a saint by Pope Francis at a canonisation ceremony in Vatican City on the eve of her 19th death anniversary.

2. Majuli Island on the Brahmaputra in Assam was declared the largest river island in the world, surpassing Marajo in Brazil, by Guinness World Records. The river island covers an area of around 880 sqkm.

3. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has granted national party status to All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) Party led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

4. Chennamaneni Vidyasagar Rao, Governor of Maharashtra, was sworn in as the acting Governor of Tamil Nadu this week.

5. Punit Goenka, MD & CEO, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, has been elected as the Indian Broadcasting Foundation-s President.

6. Cardiologist K K Aggarwal has been elected as the National President of the Indian Medical Association for the year 2016-17.

7. Former India pacer Zaheer Khan has been inducted as an Honorary Life Member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). With this, he has become the third Indian player to receive the distinction this year after Virender Sehwag and Anjum Chopra.
