Current Affairs India - 29 March 2015

1. Four founding members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), including senior leaders Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, have been removed from the party-s national executive after a party-s national council meeting held on 28th March on New Delhi. A resolution to remove Bhushan and Yadav was passed by a majority of the 311 council members that attended the meeting. Yadav-s supporters Anand Kumar and Ajit Jha were also removed from the national executive.

Soon after the removal of the four leaders, social activist Medha Patkar has resigned from the party terming the event as unfortunate.

2. India successfully launched its fourth navigation satellite IRNSS-1D from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on 28th March. With this success, India moved closer towards joining a select group of nations possessing its own satellite navigation system.

The satellite is the fourth in the series of seven navigation satellites that ISRO is planning to launch to put in place the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). The first three satellites in the IRNSS series were launched in July 2014, April and August 2014.

3. President Pranab Mukherjee has removed Mizoram Governor Aziz Qureshi from his post. Governor of West Bengal Keshri Nath Tripathi has been given additional charge of the state until further appointment of a new Governor.

4. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) won Gandhi Peace Prize 2014. The award was selected by the jury under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Indian space agency successfully launched Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) and at a very cost effective price of 450 crore rupees. Also it was its first attempt to launch a Mars Orbiter mission.

5. Kerala Finance Minister KM Mani has been appointed as the Chairman of the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers on Goods and Services Tax (GST) by the Union Finance Ministry this week. The post was lying vacant since the former Jammu and Kashmir Finance Minister Abdul Rahim quit the position after the defeat of National Conference in the J&K Assembly elections held late last year.

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is expected to be implemented from 1st April 2016 as announced by the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his 2015-16 budget speech.

6. Railways Ministry has formed a new Committee under former IAS officer Ajay Shankar to review the existing Public Private Partnership (PPP) Cell in the Railway Board. The Committee will recommend measures needed to make the PPP Cell more customer friendly, customer friendly and effective.

7. An Indian - American professor Murty S Kambhampati has been chosen among the list of 15 scientists who all have been selected for a prestigious US presidential award for excellence in the field of science, mathematics and engineering mentoring. He will receive the award along with others at a White House ceremony later this year.

8. Delhi girl Aditi Arya was crowned FBB Femina Miss India World 2015 at a ceremony held at Yashraj Studios in Mumbai yesterday. Afreen Racheal Vaz was chosen as first runner-up while Vartika Singh was chosen as second runner up.

Aditi will represent the country at Miss World pageant and the runners-up Afreen and Vartika will compete for other international titles including Miss International and Miss Asia Pacific.

9. India-s foreign exchange (forex) reserves jumped by USD 4.261 billion to all time high USD 339.991 billion in the week ended 20th March, as per weekly report published by the RBI.

The jump was mainly due to increase in foreign currency assets which was increased by USD 4.539 billion to USD 314.886 billion in the same week.  Special Drawing Rights was also increased by USD 18.2 million and India-s reserve position in the International Monetary Fund (IMF)  was decreased by USD 295.8 million in the same week. Gold Reserves remained unchanged at USD 19.837 billion in the same week.

10. Indian famous shuttler Saina Nehwal wrote history on 28th March after becoming the first Indian woman to reach World number one ranking in Badminton World Federation Rankings.She reached the No 1 spot after All England Badminton champion Spain-s Carolina Marin lost to Thailand-s Ratchanok Intanon in semi-final encounter in the Indian Open Super Series in Delhi yesterday. Saina becomes only second Indian overall to be world number one after Prakash Padukone achieved this No 1 raking in men's badminton.

Also she reached the women singles final by defeating Japan's Yuo Hashimoto by 21-15, 21-11 in the semifinal match. Also world No. 4 Srikanth, who won the Swiss Open earlier this month, also made his second successive finals after defeating Chinese Xue Song 21-16 21-13 in the semifinal match.
