Current Affairs India - 28 March 2016

1. President-s Rule has been imposed in Uttarakhand a day before the crucial trust vote scheduled to be held in the state assembly for the Harish Rawat government. Earlier the Cabinet had recommended the imposition of Central rule in the state which was formally approved by the President Pranab Mukherjee.

2. The Haryana state government has approved the Jat reservation bill today one day after the Akhil Bhartiya Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (ABJASS), which spearheaded the Jat quota stir in February this year, threatened to resume the agitation if its demands are not met by the end of this month. The Haryana cabinet cleared the bill that proposes to provide reservation to five communities, including the politically-dominant Jat community.

3. Prime Minister Narendra Modihas announced that India would host the FIFA under-17 World Cup next year in his monthly radio programme Mann ki Baat. The Union cabinet chaired by him has recently approved the proposal.

4. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been named among the world-s 50 greatest leaders 2016 published by Fortune magazine as he secured 42nd position in the list. He is the only Indian to be ranked among 50 global leaders.

The list is topped by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Jeff Bezos is followed by Angela Merkel, Aung San Suu Kyi, Pope Francis, Tim Cook, John Legend, Christiana Figueres, Paul Ryan, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sheikh Hasina.

5. Indian origin law professor Surya Deva has been appointed as an adviser on human rights and multinationals and businesses by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). With this appointment, he will be a member of the 4 member working group on the issue of human rights, transnational corporations and other business enterprises. 

6. An Indian American Nandita Bakshi has been appointed as the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bank of the West which is a unit of French bank BNP Paribas with effective from 1st April 2016. She will succeed Michael Shepherd who has been appointed as chairman of the BNP Paribas USA. She won the New England News -Woman of the Year- award in 2002. 

7.  Central Government has announced the winner of the 63rd National film Awards today. Amitabh Bachchan got Best actor award for his role in Piku and Kangana Ranaut got the Best Actress awards Tanu Weds Manu Returns. SS Rajamouli-s big budget film Baahubali won the Best Film and Sanjay Leela Bhansali won in the best director category for his period drama, Bajirao Mastani.

This is 4th National award for Amitabh Bachchan who had earlier won for Agneepath, Paa and Black. This is Kangana-s third national award after Queen and Fashion (Supporting Actress category).

8. India-s forex reserves increased by USD 2.5 billion to reach a record high of USD 355.9 billion for the week that ended on 18th March, as per weekly data published by the Reserve Bank of India.

9. Deepika and PR Sreejesh have been awarded with the Dhruv Batra Player of the Year Award for Women and Men respectively at the Hockey India (HI) Annual Awards. Late Captain Shankar Laxman won the Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award, Mr. Baldev Singh won for Invaluable Contribution, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy won for Outstanding Achievement.
