1. Eleven countries, including India, was certified polio-free by an independent commission of the World Health Organisation (WHO) yesterday with no case of the disease being reported in the country for three years. The WHO-s South-East Asia Region comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, Democratic People-s Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor-Leste. All 11 countries were declared polio-free.

In 2009, India-s 741 polio infections accounted for nearly half the world-s total. But a public immunization campaign made 2010 a turning point with only 42 cases.

2. West Zone won the Deodhar Trophy in cricket for the year 2013-14 after defeating North Zone by 133 runs. North Zone scored 282 runs while batting first, West Zone were all out 148 in 37.1 overs.

3. Former India captain and Olympian Jude Felix has been appointed as coach of the senior men's national hockey team and he will work under Chief Coach Terry Walsh, Hockey India (HI) said yesterday. Felix will join the training camp of the senior men hockey team tomorrow at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here for preparations of the FIH Men's World Cup 2014 to be held at The Hague, Netherlands from May 31 to June 15.
