1. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched the Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS) 1-E satellite from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR) today which will provide navigation, tracking and mapping services to the entire country. The satellite is the fifth of the IRNSS constellation.


2. India-s indigenously developed fighter aircraft light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas will participate in the three-day Bahrain International Airshow scheduled to be held from 21st January to 23rd January. -Two limited series production (LSP) aircraft will take part in the Bahrain International Air Show to enthral the visitors from various countries during the flying display through a series of aerobatic manoeuvres such as 8-g pull, vertical loop, slow fly past, barrel roll-, as per T Suvarna Raju, CMD, HAL.


3. The Union Cabinet has approved a new power tariff policy in order to promote clean energy, better regulation of discoms, and faster roll-out of investments. The new policy will also look to strengthen the regulatory mechanism so that discoms become more efficient and conscious towards their duties to consumers. Earlier, the Centre had approved the National Tariff Policy under the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2003 in 2006.


4. Andhra Pradesh state Government has reconstituted the Commission for Backward Classes with immediate effect last week with the name as AP Commission for Backward Classes (APCBC). It will be a two member commission with Justice KL Manjunath, (Retd.) as its chairman and Member Secretary, APCBC as the other member.


5. Mamta Binani has been elected as the new President of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) for 2016. She was the all-India topper in the Intermediate examinations of The Institute of Company Secretaries of India, amongst all the lady candidates in India and had ranked 14th on an all-India basis. She has been the Chairperson of the Eastern India Regional Council of The Institute of Company Secretaries of India in 2010.


6. Famous Kannada lyricist and film-maker Geethapriya passed away of cardiac arrest on 17th January in Bengaluru. He was 84. He wrote lyrics for over 250 songs in Kannada and directed 40 films including one Hindi film. The Karnataka government honoured him with the Puttanna Kanagal Award in 1986 in recognition to his contribution to the Kannada film industry. He was also received the Dr. B. Saroja Devi National Award and Sandesha Awards in 2012.


7. Chandila of Rajasthan Royals and Hiken Shah of MumbaiIndian IPL teams have been handed a lifetime ban and a five year ban respectively for their involvement in the IPL spot fixing scam.
