Current Affairs India - 19-20 August 2016

1. Urjit Patel has been appointed as new Governor of Reserve Bank of India as announced today. He will succeed Raghuram Rajan. Currently is his RBI Deputy Governor. Mr. Patel is a PhD from Yale University and has worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), The Brookings Institution at Washington and the Massachusetts-based Boston Consulting Group. He will be India's 24th RBI Governor.

2. Indian shuttler P V Sindhu created history by winning a silver medal in women's singles badminton event at Rio Olympics 2016. She is the first Indian female and first ever Indian shuttler to win an Olympic silver. Carolina Marin of Spain defeated P.V. Sindhu of India to win gold and Japan's Nozomi Okuhara won bronze medal. Also Sindhu is the fourth Indian to win a silver at the Olympics after shooters Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (2004, Athens) and Vijay Kumar (2012, London) and wrestler Sushil Kumar (2012, London).

3. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland has banned wrestler Narsingh Yadav for four years after an appeal by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The CAS also ruled to disqualify all the competitive results obtained by Narsingh from 25 June 2016. The CAS panel further stated that there was no evidence to accept his claim that his food/drink was spiked.

4. Indian government-s Tourism Ministry has decided to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi the face of the Incredible India campaign rather than getting a brand ambassador

5. The State Bank of India (SBI) board has approved merger of its five associate banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB). These 5 associate banks that will be merged with the SBI are State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala and State Bank of Travancore.

6. SK Sharma, Chairman and MD, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), has been awarded as the Most Enterprising CEO in Electronics Sector by the Indo Global Business Council (IGBC).

7. Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma has been awarded Ustad Chand Khan Lifetime Achievement Award by the Delhi Gharana. He is an exponent of the Santoor, a string instrument and has its origins in Kashmir.

8. Famous Hindi author Sunita Jain was awarded the prestigious 25th Vyas Samman 2015, instituted by the K K Birla Foundation, for her poetry collection "Kshama". West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi present the award to her which carries a cash prize of Rs 2.50 lakh.
