1. Kevin Rudd was sworn in as Australia-s new prime minister a day after defeating Australia's first female prime minister in a Labor leadership ballot. He was sworn in for his second term at Government House in Canberra by Governor General Quentin Bryce.

2. Seven-time winner Roger Federer and former champion Maria Sharapova crashed out of Wimbledon due to unexpected loss in the second round. Defending champion third seeded Federer was defeated by Ukraine's world number 116, Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/5), 7-5, 7-6 (7/5). The loss ends Federer-s run of 36 consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final or better appearances starting at 2004 Wimbledon.

Maria Sharapova, the third seed, defeated by Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher De Brito, the world 1316-3, 6-4. Earlier Rafael Nadal existed in the first round itself.
