  1. Vietnam-s National Assembly (NA) elected Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan as the country-s first female house speaker after securing 472 votes out of total 418 votes at the current 11th session of the 13th National Assembly. 

  2. Famous Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, first woman to receive the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Gold Medal in 2015 for her work, passed away this week. She was 65. Also she won the RIBA Stirling Prize, the UK's most respected architecture award, twice in 2010 and 2011.

She designed famous structures include the London Olympic Aquatic Centre, Evelyn Grace Academy (UK), Maxxi- National Museum of the 21st Century Arts (Rome), Galaxy Soho Building (Beijing), Guangzhou Opera House (China), Bridge Pavilion (Spain), Pierres Vives building (France), Serpentine Sackler Gallery (London), etc.

  1. Oscar winning actress Patty Duke, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying the role of Hellen Keller in "The Miracle Worker" at the age of 15, passed away. She was 69.

  1. The Union Government has launched the Startup India portal (http://startupindia.gov.in) and mobile application which was launched by the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) Ramesh Abhishek in New Delhi as an integral component of the Action Plan of the Startup India today. The portal and mobile app can be used to provide up-to- date information issued by various Government ministries and departments.

  2. India's Department of Atomic Energy signed a MoU with the US National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish an advanced gravitational wave detector in India.As a part of this LIGO-India project, LIGO will build a gravitational wave observatory in India which is likely to be functional by 2023.

  3. Rajiv Gauba, IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre of 1982 batch, has been appointed as new Secretary of Ministry of Urban Development.Earlier, he has held senior positions at policy making and programme implementation in the Central and State Governments and in international organisations. He succeeds who retired this week.

  4. Kachhabali village of Rajsamand district has become the 1stvillage in the state to vote to close down its only liquor shop.  The referendum saw 67.11% of voters wanted no alcohol sale in the village which led to the closure of the liquor shop. Polling was conducted by the excise department Of the 2,886 voters in the 9 wards of the panchayat, 2,039 voted.

  5. Indian e-commerce company Flipkart acquired PhonePe, a Bengaluru-based mobile payments company, which was co-founded by ex-Flipkart employees Sameer Nigam and Rahul Chari.PhonePe is building India-s a Unified Payments Interface (UPI) based product, which is, planned to go live in April.

  6. Aditya Birla Group-owned UltraTech Cement signed a deal with JP Associatesto acquire its cement business for Rs 15,900 crore in order to expand its cement business. This is also the biggest deal ever for the Indian cement sector.

  1. World Autism Awareness Day is observed today (2ndApril) to raise awareness about Autism. The theme for 2016 is "Autism and the 2030 Agenda: Inclusion and Neurodiversity"which reflects the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their implications for improving the lives of people with autism.

  2. Imprisoned Egyptian author and journalist has been chosen for the PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award by PEN America which is a literary and human rights organization. Earlier he was given a two-year sentence for penning a book titled The Use of Lifeas for "destroying social values."

  3. Famous American authorJim Harrison passed away this week. He was 78. He wrote more than 40 books, including novels, poems, interviews and essays including his successful novels Revenge, Wolf, Legends of the Fall etc.

  1. Bhartiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd (BHAVINI) has appointed the Kallol Roy, an expert in nuclear reactor, as its new chairman and managing director (CMD).He succeeds P Chellapandi who retired recently. Kallol Roy is the specialist in the field of total maintenance management of reactors and before this appointment, he was heading the research reactor maintenance division, reactor group at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.

  2. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has launched a new index Nifty MidSmallcap 400 which will represent companies of the mid and small market capitalization segments of the indian stock market. The new index will comprise of 400 companies which are the constituents of Nifty Midcap 150 and Nifty Smallcap 250 indices.

  3. The government has issued a new set of income tax return (ITR) forms which will require people with an annual income of more than Rs 50 lakh to disclose their net worth (assets and liabilities) which will be applicable for assessment year 2016-17.

The income tax (I-T) department has introduced fresh reporting columns in the new forms (ITR-2 and 2A) called -Asset and liability at the end of the year-, which is applicable in cases where the total income exceeds Rs 50 lakh.

  1. India-s fourth largest IT Services company HCL Technologies has signed an agreement to acquire (through demerger) all of the business of Geometric Limited.The deal does not include the 58% stake that Geometric owns in the joint venture - 3DPLM Software Solutions, with Dassault Systèmes, HCL. Geometric is one of India-s leading PLM consulting, mechanical engineering and manufacturing engineering services providers.

For this acquisition, HCL will issue 10 equity shares of Rs 2 each to Geometric shareholders for every 43 equity shares of Geometric of Rs 2 each held by them. In total, HCL will issue 15,640,546 equity shares of Rs2 each.

  1. Defending champion Saina Nehwal was defeated by Olympic Champion Li Xuerui in the semifinals of the India Open Super Series badminton tournament in New Delhi today. She lost 20-22, 21-17,19-21 to Li in a very close match in the women's singles competition.

Global PE firm Blackstone Group has announced that it would acquire Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.-s majority stake in Indian outsourcing firm Mphasis Ltd which will be the biggest acquisition of Blackstone in India.Based on the open offer subscription, the purchase price consideration will vary between Rs 5,466 crore and Rs 7,071 crore (or approximately USD 825 million - USD 1.1 billion). As a part of the deal, HPE also signed a master services agreement (MSA) with Mphasis, committing business of USD 990 million over a period of five years.

  2. Famous American actor, voice artist and comedian Larry Drake passed away due to cancer. He was 66. He was best known for his role Benny Stulwicz in L.A. Law and the voice of Pops in Johnny Bravo. He won Prime time Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

  3. Both West Indies Men and Women teams won the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup in their respective categories. In the Men-s, West Indies defeated England by 4 wickets after hitting 4 back to back sixes in the last over.With this, West Indies Men team won the ICC T20 world cup for the second time after winning the same in 2012. Samuels was adjudged Man of the Match while India's Virat Kohli was adjudged Man of the series.

In the Women-s category, team defeated 3 time champion Australia by 8 wickets to win their ICC T20 world cup for the first time. With this win, West Indies team won total 3 world title this year including U19 world cup title.

  1. India has been ranked at No 6 position among the list of the world's top 10 manufacturing countries, as per a United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) report published today. This is much improvement from last year-s rank of ninth.

As per the Yearbook, published by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), India-s Manufacturing Value Added (MVA) grew by 7.6% in 2015 compared to the previous year.
China topped the list as the world's top manufacturing country followed by the U.S., Japan, Germany and Korea in the first 5 countries of the list.

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Saudi Arabia-s highest civilian honour- the king Abdulaziz Sash by King Salman bin Abdulaziz at the Royal Court held yesterday during his visit to the country. The award is named after Abdulaziz Al Saud, the founder of the modern Saudi state and is given to citizens of Saudi Arabia and foreigners for meritorious service to the Saudi Kingdom. King himself makes awards to foreigners.

  2. The Central Government has released Indian Intellectual Property (IP) Panorama in order to increase awareness and sensitivity towards IP in the SME sector, academia and researchers. The IP Panorma, which can be accessed athttp://ict-ipr.in/index.php/ip-panorama, is a single window interface for information on IP and guidance on leveraging it for competitive advantage.

The Indian IP Panorama is a customized version of IP Panorama Multimedia toolkit developed by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) and Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA).

  1. IIT Madras and IIM Bangalore have been ranked as the top institutes in the list of top educational institutes unveiled by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development as a part of its National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for the first time.

As per the list, IIT Madras has been ranked as the top engineering college followed by IIT Mumbai and IIT Kharagpur. IIM Bangalore is the top management college followed by IIM Ahmedabad at rank no. 2 and IIM Calcutta at rank no. 3. The Indian Institute of Science Bangalore is the best university in India.

  1. Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has been conferred with -Maharashtrian Of The Year- awardwhich was presented by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavisat a ceremony held at Mumbai. At the same time. Legendary singer Asha Bhosle was awarded with the -lifetime achievement award-.

  2. Mining giant Vedanta announced this week that its subsidiary Talwandi Sabo Power (TSPL) has set the Guinness World Record for planting 2,08,751 saplings at a single location in less than an hourwhich was acknowledged by the Guinness World Records on December 17, 2015, by presenting a certificate. The mass plantation drive was organised in Mansa (Punjab) on 30thOctober last year.

  4. Famous journalist and author Babu Bharadwaj passed away due to cardiac arrest in Kozhikode, Kerala.He was 68. He wrote many novels and stories including his famous works Pravasiyude Kurippukal, Shavaghoshayathra, Pravasiyude Vazhiyambalangal, Puppet Theatre (short story collection) and Adrushya Nagarangal. He was awarded with the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award for his novel Kalapangalkkoru Grihapadam in 2006.

  5. Indian boxer Shiva Thapa won the silver medal at the Asian/Oceania Qualifying Tournament held in Qian-an, China in the 56 Kilogram category final this week. He was defeated by 0-3 by Thailand-s Chatchai Butdee in the final match.

  1. Internal Security Chief of Vietnam Tran Dai Quang has sworn in as the ninth President of Vietnam after he was elected by country-s National Assembly. He succeeds Truong Tan Sang for a five years term. He has got 91.5% votes to elected as the next President of Vietnam.

  2. Former Italy head coach Cesare Maldini has passed away. He was 84. He played for Milan from 1954 to 1966 and was a star for the club and he helped the club win four Scudetti along with their first European Cup in 1963. His son Paolo Maldini was also former Italian team captain and famous footballer. As a coach, He helped Italy U-21 team winning the European Under-21 Championship a record three consecutive times.

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched Stand up India scheme at a function in Noida today which aims to promote entrepreneurship among the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Women by facilitating loans in the range of 10 lakhs to one crore rupees. Narendra Modi said that stand up India will help in creating 2.5 lakh entrepreneurs as every bank branch will provide two such loans without collateral for setting up a new enterprise. He also said that the scheme will transform the lives of people from dalit and tribal communities.

  2. Bihar Chief Minister has declaredBihar as a dry state today as the Government imposed a total ban on sale and consumption of alcohol including India Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) with immediate effect. As per the announcement, no alcohol can be legally consumed in all of Bihar, including bars and restaurants. Earlier Nitish Kumar promised to ban Liquor sale in the state as a part of his poll promise. Also no license would be granted for sale and consumption of alcohol in places like hotels, club and bars in towns and cities too with immediate effect.

  3. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has flagged off India's first fastest train Gatimaan Express today atNizamuddin Railway stationin Delhi which covered nearly 190 km distance between Delhi and Agra within 100 minutes. Gatimaan Express, equipped with a 5,500 HP electric locomotive, has a maximum speed of 160 km per hour.

  4. National Maritime Day of India is observed across the country today (5thApril) to remember the sailing of India-s first steamship Loyalty on April 5th 1919 from Mumbai to London. The day has been observed as National Maritime Day since 1964.

  5. Indian Government-s flagship programme Aaadhar now reached 1 billion mark (100 Crore) as more than 100 crore people have now been enrolled for Aadhar number. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had generated 100 crore Aadhaar numbers in five-and half years since the first Aadhaar was issued in 2010. This scheme will help Government to save thousands of crores by transferring benefits to the beneficiaries directly to their back accounts, thus reducing misuse.

  6. Senior IAS officer and Chief Secretary to the Odisha government R Balakrishnan has been appointed as the Chairman of the Bhubhaneshwar Smart City Ltd. (BSCL), the special purpose vehicle (SPV) which was set up to to make Bhubhaneshwar a smart city. With this, Bhubaneswar also become the first city where the SPV was launched to transform it into a smart city.

  7. Five times world chess champion Viswanathan Anand will be awarded with the Hridaynath Award which carries cash award of Rs 2 lakh and a memento. The award felicitates and recognises successful individuals across the country from various walks of life. With this, he will join eminent personalities like Lata Mangeshkar, Babasaheb Purandare, Asha Bhosle, Amitabh Bachchan, Hariprasad Chaurasia and A R Rahman who won this award earlier.

RBI cuts repo rate by 50 bps to boost growth during its monetary policy review today
RBI Governor Dr Raghuram Rajan has cut repo rate by 50 bps during its first bi-monthly monetary policy review meeting for fiscal year 2016-76 today. Repo rate, the rate at which RBI lends money to banks for the short term, was cut by 50 bps to 6.5% while the Reverse Repo Rate, the rate at which RBI borrows money from banks, was increased by 50 bps to 6%. This is the lowest repo rate since 2011 and this step is expected to increase liquidity in the market and boost growth. The cash reserve ratio for banks has been kept unchanged at 4%.
The RBI has also kept statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) of scheduled commercial banks unchanged at 21.5%. Statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) refers amount that the commercial banks require to maintain with the RBI in the form of gold or government approved securities (G-Secs or bonds) before lending. Marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate that is rate at which RBI lends money to domestic banks was reduced by 75 bps to 7.0%. The RBI governor also has retained its earlier projection of 7.6% GDP growth for the financial year 2016-17 and inflation at 5% for financial year 2016-17.

  2. Prime Minister of Iceland Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson resigned after his name appeared in the Panama Papers leak.The disclosure was made by law firm Mossack Fonseca, the world's fourth biggest offshore law firm which is based in Panama, in which lots of world leaders are named.

As per the leak, Gunnlaugsson owned an undeclared offshore company and covered up millions of dollars' worth of family assets to avoid taxes.

  1. The Central Government has formed a committee headed by Madhukar Gupta to bolster border protection and address the problem of vulnerability in border fencing along the Indo-Paki border. The committee will study the types of gaps in fencing and other vulnerabilities along the Indo-Pak border to recommend a comprehensive approach to fix them on a temporary and permanent basis.

  2. Delhi government has passed a proposal to build a memorial for late President APJ Abdul Kalam at Dilli Haat, south Delhi which will include the notes, books, clothes and other personal items of the former president. It will be opened to the public on 27thJuly this year which is Kalam-s death anniversary.

  3. Japanese electronics giant Panasonic has appointed senior executive Manish Sharma to its global executive council, first Indian to be inducted into the decision making body of the USD 80 billion electronics giant.Earlier another Japanese giant Sony had elevated Sunil Nayyar, sales head of its Indian business, to lead its consumer electronics business in the US.

  1. The World Health Day was observed on 7thApril across the world with the theme of 2016 as 'Beat Diabetes' to increase awareness about the disease curb rising number of cases. WHO also released its first 'global report on diabetes' stating that the number of people suffering from the disease has nearly increased four times since 1980 to 422 million adults (8.5% of the population) in 2014, most of whom live in developing countries.

  2. Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson has been appointed as the Prime Minister of Iceland after former Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson resigned following Panama paper scandal. Before that he was the Agriculture and Fisheries Minister and Deputy Chair of the Progressive Party (PP). The nation's leaders have decided to call early elections in autumn this year.

  3. Foreign Minister of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci has been sworn in as the President of Kosovo this week. He succeeded Atifete Jahjagaafter winning the election held recently. He becomes fourth President of Kosovo after the European country had unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008.

  4. The Nobel Peace Prize winner Mother Teresa has been conferred with the UK's prestigious Founders Award this year in recognition of her tireless effort for philanthropy activities.She had spent more than 45 year of her life as serving the poor, the sick and the orphaned in Kolkata. The award is given to recognize and reward exemplary achievements of people within the global Asian community which was launched in 2010 by Paul Sagoo, entrepreneur and founder of the Lemon group.

  5. Famous American country music legend Merle Haggard passed away this week.He was 79. In his six decades long career, he recorded more than three dozen No. 1 country music hits. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994 and won a Grammy Award for best male country vocal performance.

  1. The first ever two day North East-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Business Summit was inaugurated at the City Convention Centre in Imphal, Manipur this week. The summit is being organized by Manipur Commerce and Industries Department (MCID) in collaboration with the Union Ministries of External Affairs and Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER), Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and Indian Chamber of Service Industries (ICSI).

  2. Former Karnataka chief minister and BJP vice president B S Yaddyurappa has been appointed as new BJP party chief of Karnataka and Union Minister Vijay Sampla has been appointed as the BJP party chief of Punjab. Also BJP leader Kesahav Prasad Maurya has been appointed as the Party Chief of Uttar Pradesh just before the crucial vote next year.

  3. The Union Information & Broadcasting Ministry has formed a committee headed by former Chief Election Commissioner B B Tandon to ensure that the Supreme Court's guidelines for government advertisements are followed. The three-member panel also includes senior TV journalist Rajat Sharma and ad guru Piyush Pandey. Earlier the Supreme Court has ordered that photos of leaders should not be published in government advertisements except those of the President, Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of India, Chief Ministers, Governors and ministers.

  4. The Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani has launched a portal for registration and allotment of International Standard Book Number (ISBN) at a ceremony held in New Delhi today in order to facilitate both publishers and authors to register for ISBN online.  This interactive automated system would provide fast and efficient services to the Publishers and Authors.

  5. IFS Officer Debraj Pradhan, current Ambassador of India to Chile, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Norway. Earlier he worked as the first Secretary and later Counsellor overseeing Commercial matters in Embassy of India, Buenos Aires and Deputy High Commissioner of India, Lagos.

  6. India-s largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel has acquired Aircel-s 4G spectrum in eight circles for Rs 3,500 crore in a deal which will help Bharti Airtel to offer 4G services in all 22 circles of the country. This deal comes at crucial time just before the launch of Reliance Jio telecom services by Mukesh Ambani-s Reliance.

  7. Kishore Biyani owned Future Group acquired online home furnishings and décor business company FabFurnish for an undisclosed amount. Post the deal, the Future Group will retain the FabFurnish brand and will use the store's online platform to take its Home Town retail stores online.This acquisition is India's largest home décor e-marketplace.

  8. Reliance Industries director Nita Ambani and State Bank of India chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya have been ranked at top two places in Forbes- -Asia 50 Power Businesswomen 2016- list published this week. As per the list, 6 other Indian business women have also been included in the list- at no. 14-Mu Sigma CEO Ambiga Dhiraj, 16- Dipali Goenka CEO Welspun India, 18- Vinita Gupta CEO Lupin, 22-Chanda Kochhar ICICI Bank Managing Director, 26-Vandana Luthra VLCC Health Care Founder, 28- Kiran Mazumdar Shaw Biocon Founder.

  9. The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) has appointed CP Gurnani as its chairman for 2016-17 and Raman Roy has been appointed as the vice-chairman of the IT body. In his new role, Gurnani will lead Nasscom's vision 2020 for the industry, which includes programs to make India a digital and innovation hub in keeping with the Digital India campaign.

Global Clinical Research giant, Lambda Therapeutic Research has appointed Tausif Monif as its new President for Global Operations. Before this appointment, He was working with Sun Pharmaceutical as Vice President in Gurgaon and he has rich experience of more than 24 years in the Clinical Research Industry.

  11. Lamborghini India Pvt. Ltd has appointed Sharad Agarwal as head of its Indian operation. In his new role, he will take care of the entire activities of oversee sales, marketing, and network development of the company.Before this appointment, he was working with Audi India as the head of corporate sales and financial services.

  12. Famous journalist and author Yogendra Bali has passed away this week due to a heart attack. He was 85.He was a member of the general council of the Lalit Kala Akademi and a member of its committees on Art Education, Publications, the Triennele and International Exhibitions. He wrote many books including The Communal Bogey' with foreword by late prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, 'Chandra Shekhar: A Political Biography,' 'Pawan Chamling: Daring To Be Different,' and 'Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji and Freedom Movement of India'.

  13. Famous Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has lost to Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying in stright games 19-21, 13-21 in the semifinals of the Malaysia Open Super Series Premier tournament today. This is her sixth consecutive loss against Tai, including in last month's All England Championship.

At the same time, Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth slipped down the order in the latest Badminton World Federation ranking released yesterday. Saina lost two places to reach to World No. 8 in women's singles while K Srikanth dropped four spots to be placed at the 14th spot in men's singles ranking. Commonwealth Games champion P Kashyap also dropped to World No. 18 while P V Sindhu improved a place to be back in the top 10 of women's singles.

An investigative journalist from Azerbaijan, Khadija Ismayilova has been awarded with the 2016 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize which will be awarded during the celebration of World Press Freedom Day on 3rdMay 2016.Ms Ismayilova, a freelance journalist and contributor to the Azerbaijani service of Radio Free Europe, was detained in December 2014.

  2. British Danny Willett has won the US Masters Golf Championship for the year 2016 after defeating defending champion Jordan Spieth at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. With this win, he has become the first British to win the US Masters since Nick Faldo won the same in 1996.

  3. Anthony Joshua won the International Boxing Federation heavyweight title for the year 2016 after defeating Charles Martin in the second round held at the O2 Arena in London, second for a British to win the world heavyweight champion. Anthony is the 2012 Olympic gold medalist and he is the fifth quickest heavyweight to win a version of the world title.

  4. Malaysia's badminton player Lee Chong Wei defeated China's World No 1 ranked player Chen Long by 21-13, 21-8 to win Malaysian Open 2016 in men's singles title held at the Malawati Stadium in Shah Alam, Malaysia. He as a singles player ranked first worldwide for 199 consecutive weeks from 21 August 2008 to 14 June 2012, third Malaysian player after Rashid Sidek and Roslin Hashim to achieve this ranking.

At the same time Ratchanok Intanon won the Malaysian Open women-s singles title after defeating Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan by 21-14, 21-15 in the final match.

The ministry for skill development and entrepreneurship (MSDE) has appointed Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar as brand ambassador of the 'Skill India' campaign which is meant for the talents of young generation and it is an opportunity for the nation to make full use of its young population.   1. India-s Industrial production measured by Index of Industrial production (IIP) grew by 2% in February compared to same month last year after contracting for three straight months. IIP contracted by 1.5% in January this year, and grew by 4.8% in February last year.The output of consumer durable goods grew 9.7%, manufacturing sector output grew 0.7%, mining output grew by 5% and power generation grew by 9.6% in the same month.

  2. India-s Retail inflation, measured by Consumer price index, dropped to six month low of 4.83% in March due to cheaper food articles such as vegetables and pulses. The retail inflation was revised upwards to 5.26% from 5.18% in February. Food inflation for March also dropped to 5.21% compared to 5.30% in February. The Retail inflation stood at 5.7% in rural areas and stood at 3.95% in urban areas.

But the new estimate was within the range of government expectations, keeping the economy on track to meet the official full-year target of 6.5% to 7%.

India remained the world-s largest recipient of remittances from abroad in 2015 even if total remittances dropped by USD 1 billion compared to previous year, as per report published by the World Bank. As per the report, India attracted USD 69 billion in remittances in 2015 compared to USD 70 billion in 2014. Other large remittance recipients in 2015 were China (USD 64 billion), the Philippines (USD 28 billion), Mexico (USD 25 billion) and Nigeria (USD 21 billion).

Delhi Government has launched the second phase of odd-even car rationing scheme to control pollution in the national capital. The second phase started from 15thApril and continue till 30thApril 2016 in order to reduce vehicular pollution and reducing traffic congestion on the roads of NCR Delhi.  Under this scheme, four wheelers with licence plates ending in an odd number will ply on odd dates and those ending with an even number can run on even dates.

  5. Geetha Johri, a 1982-batch IPS officer, has been appointed as Gujarat's first woman Director General of Police. She succeeds PC Thakur who was transferred to the Centre as the Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guards on deputation. The Central Government has appointed Susmita Pande, professor at Ujjain's Vikram University, as the new chairperson of the National Monument Authority (NMA).She will succeed Himanshu Prabha Ray, professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University whose term ended in September 2015.   8. A Kathak dancer from Varanasi, Soni Chaurasia, has broken the world record of longest dance performance by continuously dancing for 123 hours and 30 minutes. She broke the earlier record held by Hemlatha Kundalu of Trichur, Kerala, who performed Mohiniattam (a classical dance) continuously for 123 hours and 20 mins. Soni began her performance on 4thApril at 6 pm on a school campus in Varanasi. While no official from the Guinness World Records attended the performance, two cameras had been installed to record Soni-s each move.

  1. India-s overall inflation, measured by the wholesale price index, stood at negative zone in March at (-) 0.85%, 17thconsecutive month of negative inflation. Overall inflation stood at (-) 0.91% in the previous month of February.

Food inflation increased marginally to 3.73% in March compared to 3.35% in February while overall inflation in the fuel and power segment stood (-) 8.3% and in manufactured products stood at (-) 0.13% in the same month. Negative inflation will give the RBI more room for further rate cuts during its next monetary policy review meetings.

  1. India-s overall exports dropped by 5.47% in March compared to same month last year to USD 22.71 billion due to lower global demand. Also total imports dropped by 21.56% in the same month to USD 27.78 billion. India-s trade deficit dropped to USD 5.07 billion in March from USD 6.54 billion in the previous monthof February. The cumulative exports for the financial year 2015-2016 stood at USD 261 billion dollars.

  2. A US grand jury has imposed two companies of India's Tata group -Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Tata America International Corp. with a USD 940 million fine in a trade secret lawsuit filed against them.The fine needs to be paid to Epic Systems for allegedly using its software. TCS said that it will appeal against the verdict in the higher court.

  3. Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar created history today by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics. She exhibited a great show as she completed her performance at the final qualifier and Olympic Test Event in Rio de Janiero.She finished ninth in the first of the four subdivisions of the women's artistic category, thus qualifying for the Rio Olympics in August. Earlier, she had created history by becoming the first woman gymnast to win a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

  1. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Rahul Johri as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with effective from 1stJune 2016. The creation of the post of the CEO was a change recommended by the three-member Lodha panel in its report in January this year. The panel had stressed the need for the BCCI to separate its governance and management duties, which requires a CEO like role for management activities.

  2. Former Finance Minister of Congo Mouamba Clement has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Congo by Congo's President Denis Sassou Nguesso. He will form the new government of the African country.

  1. The Central government has approved an interest rate of 8.7% on the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) for 2015-16 compared to 8.75% in 2014-15, as per announced by the Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya today. Finance Minister has also approved the proposal.

  2. Bhupendra Kainthola, an Indian Information Service (IIS) officer of 1989 batch, has been appointed as the new Director of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), based in Pune. He is currently working as Director of  Doordarshan and will replace replace Prashant Pathrabe.

  3. Cadbury India, part of Mondelez International, has inaugurated its USD 190 million factory in Sri City SEZ, on the border of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh which is the largest plant of the company in Asia Pacific region. This plant will have an initial capacity of about 60,000 tonnes per year, which will be increased to 250,000 tonnes by 2020.

  4. Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee has been chosen for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the movie Aligarh. The actor will receive the award in the best actor category of Critics Choice. In the movie 'Aligarh' directed by Hansal Mehta, Manoj Bajpayee has played a role of Professor 'Ramchandra Siras'.

  5. Bollywood actress Radhika Apte won the best actress in an international narrative feature honour at this year-s Tribeca Film Festival for her performance in anthology film -Madly-. The 30-year-old actress starred in -Clean Shaven-, which is a segment of -Madly-. Madly is a mixture of six short stories, directed by different directors.

  6. Indian shooter Mairaj Ahmed Khan won the silver medal in the Men-s Skeet event of the ISSF Shooting World Cup held in Rio De Janerio. With this, Mairaj gave India its first skeet medal at a World Cup.Earlier in the year, he became India's first ever skeet shooter to win an Olympic quota place after finishing at sixth place in last year's ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Italy.

  7. India will host the 2018 Commonwealth Judo Championships in Jaipur, as announced by the Judo Federation of India in a press release in New Delhi today. With this, it will be the first time that Commonwealth Judo Championships will be held in India. India will also play host to the 10th Asian Cadet Judo Championships & 17th Asian Junior Judo Championships from September 6th to 12th in Kerala.

The theme of 2016 was -Digital Creativity: Culture Re-imagined-.

  2. The World Day for Safety and Health at Work was observed on 28thAprilacross the world by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to promote occupational safety, health and decent work. The theme of 2016 was 'Workplace Stress: a collective challenge".

  3. The Tibetan government-in-exile has re-elected Lobsang Sangey as the Prime Minister for a second consecutive term today. He defeated his only rival - Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament Pempa Tsering by 9,012 votes.

  4. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) due to excessive government interferencewhich means it has violated Article 2.9 of the ICC's Articles of Association, which prohibits government interference and requires free and fair elections.

  5. Leicester City club footballer Riyad Mahrez became the first-ever African to bag the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year awardafter scoring 17 goals and making 11 assists in 34 games which positioned his club in the top of the English Premier League.Sunderland striker Beth Mead won 'Women's Young Player of the Year' and Dele Alli of MK Dons won 'Young Player of the Year' award.

  6. Former PM of Thailand Banharn Silpa-archa passed away this week. He was 83. He served as Thailand's prime minister in 1995-96 during which he made made his home province of Suphanburi, one of the nation's most developed regions.

  7. Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) founder Amanullah Khan passed away at a Rawalpindi hospital. He was 82. He was also the co-founder of the Kashmir Independent Committee in 1963. He was elected secretary general of the JK Plebiscite Front (PF) in 1965 and co-founded the JK National Liberation Front (NLF) with Maqbool Bhat.

  1. India has successfully put into orbit its seventh and final navigation satellite called IRNSS-1G today as the PSLV C33 rocket carried the seventh satellite. With this landmark achievement, India now joins the small group of nations which have their own regional satellite navigation system or GPS.

  2. The central government has increased the minimum wage for contract workers to Rs. 10,000 per month, as announced by Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya. The wage hike has been done based on a Supreme Court verdict and the decision has been taken to make changes to rule 25 of the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Central Rules.

  3. The Union Government has constituted 8-member committee to prepare a blueprint for doubling farmers- income by 2022. The committee will be headed by Additional secretary at the Union Agriculture Ministry Ashok Dalwaiand is expected to submit the report in two months.

  4. The committee headed by renowned film-maker Shayam Benegal has submitted its report with suggestions for the revamp of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).The panel also includes actor-filmmaker Kamal Hassan, filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, ad guru Piyush Pandey and film journalist Bhawana Somayaa, among others.

Some of the recommendations of the panel are, Two more categories of U/A be added; one plus 12 years of age and one plus 15 years of age and two categories of adult-normal adult and adult with caution. Also the CBFC can refuse certification if a film contains content that breaches the provisions of Section 5B (1) of the Cinematograph Act, 1952 or content in a film crosses the ceiling laid down in the highest category of certification.

  1. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has identified Mumbai as the noisiest city in the country followed by Delhi, Chennai, and Bengaluru, as its report published this week. The CPCB has analyzed the noise levels in nine metro cities using data from 35 monitoring stations which helped them to prepare the final report.

  2. The Department of Telecommunications has notified that all mobile phones sold in India should have a dedicated 'panic button' and the Global Positioning System facilityin it from next year onwards. These facility can be used to send out a signal in case of distress which aims to improve the safety of women and ensuring a quick response from security agencies or to send out distress signal to a family member or the police authorities so that they can be rescued.

  3. A research scholar from IIT-Kharagpur Ashok Kumar won the famous International Plant Nutrition Scholar Award which is given by the US-based International Plant Nutrition Institute. The award carries a certificate and cash prize of USD 2000. He has been pursuing his PhD on nutrition management of rice-chickpea production system in laterite soil which will help use of organic fertiliser in the right quantity and timing to rice crop so that yield of rice-chickpea cropping system rises by 10%.

  4. Famous Indian badminton player Nandu Natekar became the first non-Cricketer to be inducted into the Legends Club founded by the late Cricket Club of India (CCI) president Raj Singh Dungarpur this month. He was inducted into the club along with 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, who became the sixth cricketer to be inducted in the club.

  5. Indian striker Jeje Lalpekhlua won the 'Indian Player of the Year' award by the Football Players Association of India (FPAI) at its annual awards function held this week. He played a crucial role in India winning the SAFF Championships in January 2016 and won the Indian Super League (ISL) title with Chennaiyin FC where he scored six goals. He defeated other players including India captain Sunil Chhetri, Bikash Jairu, David Lalrinmuana and Dhanachandra Singh, to win the prestigious award.

  6. Indian archer Deepika Kumari has equalled the world record in Women's Recurve event at the qualifying stage of Archery World Cup held in Shanghai.She recorded a score of 686 out of 720 to finish 1st in qualifiers and equal the world record set by South Korea's Ki Boe Bae at the World University Games in Gwangju last year.She has already qualified for the Rio Olympics with her performance at the Copenhagen World Championships last year.

  7. V T Thomas a.k.a Cartoonist Toms, famous for his renowned characters Boban and Molly, passed away this week. He was 86. He drew cartoons for Malayala Manorama for nearly four decades.

  2. The International Jazz Day 2016 was observed across the world on 30thApril 2016 to raise awareness in the international community of the virtues of jazz as an educational tool, and a force for peace, unity, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people.

  3. New Zealand's $5 note won the 2015 Bank Note of the Year award, awarded by the International Bank Note Society (IBNS), a group of currency enthusiasts. The note, with advanced security features, is in orange-brown colour with mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary on the front and a penguin on the back.

  4. Trinidad batsman Iraq Thomas scored a century in 21 balls during a match organised by Tobago Cricket Association.With this, he surpassed West Indian batsman Chris Gayle's earlier record of a century in 30 balls.

  1. The Border Security Force (BSF) is planning to install the tallest national flag near the Attari-Wagah Joint Check Post, also known as the Wagah border. The flag at 350 feet is part of BSF's expansion plans for the visitors' gallery at the site of the iconic Retreat ceremony. Recently Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar hoisted the largest tricolor in Jharkhand in January this year which is at 293 feet high.

  2. Nagaland capital Kohima has been declared as a -smoke-free city-, as per official announcement made by the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, Rovilatuo Mor during the campaign for Smoke-Free Kohima City.Nagaland State ranks the second highest in the country with 57% of Tobacco Users.

  3. Gujarat government has declared 10% reservation in higher education institutions and government jobs for the economically backward members of all non-reserved castes, with income below Rs 6 lakh per annum.This will be on top of the 49% reservation currently available for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Castes. This is considered to be a significant step following agitations by Patidar community in Gujarat since last couple of months.

  4. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appointed an Indian academician Radha Kumar to the UN University Council among 11 other members. Radha Kumar is currently working as Director General of Delhi-based think tank Delhi Policy Group and ge specialises in ethnic conflicts, peacemaking and peace-building.

  5. Senior IPS officer of Uttarakhand cadre Surender Kumar Bhagat has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of Railways Protection Force (RPF).Currently he is working as Special Director General in Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Western Sector, Jammu & Kashmir.

  6. Bureaucrat-turned-politician N K Singh has been chosen for the Japan's second-highest national award along with91 foreign recipientsfor his contribution in improving Indo-Japan economic ties over the past few years. The award- Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star - will be conferred on Singh by Japanese PM Shnizo Abe. He had served in Japan during the investment decision of Maruti-Suzuki and subsequent forays of the Japanese automobile companies into India.

  7. Famous sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik won the gold medal at ninth Moscow Sand Sculpture Championship in Russia. He won the competition for his 15 feet high art work Mahatma Gandhi's sculpture for non-violence and peace. Padma Shri Mr. Pattnaik has participated in more than 50 international sand sculpture championships across the world and won many awards for the country.

  8. Global information services company Experian India has launched the 'Hunter Fraud Score' which is a scoring mechanism that measures the probability of fraud in a credit application across banking and insurance industries.This score will help businesses to identify credit applications that should be thoroughly vetted for potential fraud.

Experian is also enhancing fraud detection practices in India by running the Experian Fraud Bureau - a closed user group (CUG) of industry members, who share fraud data and in return obtain expedient fraud detection services from Experian. The CUG comprises 47 banks and 15 life insurance companies.

  1. The 2008 Olympic Gold medallist shooter, Abhinav Bindra accepted Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) request to become the second goodwill ambassador for the Indian Rio Olympics' contingent. With this he will join Actor Salman Khan who was appointed as the first goodwill ambassador by IOA.
