  1. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress party won the Nigeria presidential election announced today to become the next President of the African country. With this he has also become the first opposition candidate to win a presidential election in Nigeria.

  2. Mustafa Kamal has resigned as the President of the International Cricket Council (ICC) today after he was denied to hand over the World Cup trophy to Winning team Australia as per standard practice. Insteadthe trophy was handed over to the winning team by ICC Chairman N. Srinivasan. Earlier he was appointed as the 11th President of the ICC in June 2014 for a period of two years.

  3. New Zealand left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori has announced his retirement from ODI format recently after completing 18 years long career. He has already retired from Test Cricket and Twenty20 Cricket. He made the announcement of his ODI retirement soon after the New Zealand team came back to home country after losing World Cup final match against Australia.

New Zealand pace bowler Kyle Mills also announced his retirement from all format of cricket today after his team mate Daniel Vettori announced retirement from ODI. He played 170 ODIs for New Zealand and took 240 wickets to be the second highest wicket-taker in the ODI format game after Vettori, who took 297 ODI wickets.

  1. Indian Government launched Operation Raahat to evacuate 4000 Indian nationals from Yemen amid rising violence in the country. India got permission to dock its offshore patrol vessel INS Sumitra at the Aden harbor of Yemen to evacuate thousands of Indians.

  2. India-sE-commerce marketplace Snapdeal has acquired a majority stake in digital financial distribution platform RupeePower.With this, an Indian e-commerce company entered into the financial services space for the first time. Post the deal Snapdeal will be able offer consumer loans through the RupeePower network.

  3. The Reserve Bank of India has penalized 16 central cooperative banks with a fine of Rs 5 lakh each for non-adherence of the Know Your Customer and Anti-Money Laundering guidelines. The banks were issued show-cause notices and the action was taken after going through the responses by the Central Bank.

  4. Balbir Singh Senior was awarded with the Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award by Hockey Indian last week. The award carries a trophy and cash prize of 30 lakh rupees. He was a member of three Olympic gold medal winning Indian team which are London Olympics (1948), Helsinki Olympics (1952) and Melbourne Olympics (1956).

He was the Vice Captain of the Indian Hockey team during Helsinki Olympics and Captain during Melbourne Olympics. His 1952 record of most goals (five) in an Olympic final still remains unbeaten and he also figures in the list of 16 iconic Olympians of all-time.

  1. Dr Subadhra Devi Rai, an Indian-origin nurse in Singapore, was chosen for the 2015 International Achievement Award by the Florence Nightingale International Foundation (FNIF) of the International Council of Nurses for her work in the healthcare sector of women and refugees.

With this, she became the first Singaporean to get the prestigious biennial prize since its introduction in 1999. She will receive the award on 21st June 2015 at a conference in Seoul.

  1. US economy added 126,000 jobs in March which is lower compared to last 12 month average.The US unemployment rate held unchanged at 5.5% in March compared to previous month, as per the US Department of Labor.

Federal Reserve has recently announced that it is closely monitoring US job market and may raise interest rates once job market and economy improves further.

  1. New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has been awarded Sir Richard Hadlee medal, highest cricketing honour of New Zealand, for his inspirational leadership and leading his country to its first Cricket World Cup final match ever.He led the team to its first World Cup final where they were defeated by Australia.

  1. India has been ranked at 119thposition in the list of 130 countries in the FM Global Resilience Index 2015 published on 2ndApril. India secured 112th rank in last year.

The Index measures business resilience of nations based on economic, risk quality and supply chain factors. Norway has been ranked at No 1 in the list while Venezuela is ranked last on the list.

  1. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has launched a new subsidised -Aahar- scheme on the occasion of the State-s Foundation Day.The scheme was launched in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur and Rourkela in the first phase.

As a part of the scheme, four Aahar outlets each were opened in five towns to provide meal consisting of rice and Dalma at a subsidised rate with financial assistance from three State run corporations and Tata Steel.

Union Government launched Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles (FAME) - India Scheme as a part of the National Mission for Electric Mobility to boost eco-friendly vehicles sales in the country.The main aim is to support the hybrid or electric vehicles market development and its manufacturing eco-system in India. The scheme aims to provide 795 crore rupees support till 2020 for the manufacturing and sale of electric and hybrid vehicles.

  2. Gulshan Rai, the Director General of Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert-In), has been appointed as India's first Cyber Security chief.He currently heads the eSecurity and Cyber Law division in the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and has been involved in various capacities regarding cyber security for over two decades.

  3. Andhra Pradesh Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu has approved the name of the Capital city of Andhra Pradesh as -Amaravathi- which will be built at Tullur in Vijayawada-Guntur region of the state with the help of Singapore.

Amaravathi, located on the banks of river Krishna, derives its name from Lord Amareswara temple in the village and it is known as Dakshina Kashi (Kashi of the South).

  1. Bollywoodmegastar Amitabh Bachchan was -honoured- with an honorary doctorate from the Egyptian Academy of Arts for his contribution to cinema. With this, the Academy of Arts has given a doctorate to an international actor.

  1. President of Peru Ollanta Humala appointed Pedro Cateriano as the new Prime Minister of Peru. He replaced former Prime Minister Ana Jara, who was removed from the by Congress amid allegations of corruption.

Before that, he served as as Peru-s Defence Minister and had served as deputy justice minister from 2001 to 2002. He was member of the Peruvian parliament from 1990 to 1992.

  1. An Indian-American assistant professor, Rajani Ganesh-Pillai was awarded with the Peltier Award for her innovative teaching methods. The Peltier Award was established by Joseph and Norma Peltier to honor innovation in teaching.

One of her innovative practices is a game called "Baffa Baffa," where the goal is to have students understand culture's role in business and how it can affect transactions and relationships.

  1. West Bengal and Bihar Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi took additional charge of Mizoram and he was sworn in as 16th Governor of Mizoram.He was given additional charge of Mizoram after Union Government had sacked former Governor Aziz Qureshi.

  2. Malli Mastan Babu, an IIMC alumnus and one of the top mountaineers of the country has been found deadin the Andes Mountains between Argentina and Chileby the searching team after he went on a climb up the high Andes Mountains between Argentina and Chile and went missing 2 weeks back.

He was the fastest mountaineer to climb summits in all seven continents. In 2006, he had scaled seven summits of the world in 172 days.

  1. A minor planet, which was discovered back in 1988, was named after Indian Chess grandmaster, Viswanathan Anand. The planed is now known as Vishyanand, was previously identified as planet 4538.

With this, He joins former world chess champions Alexander Alekhine and Anatoly Karpov who aloso have minor planets named after them.

  1. India-s foreign exchange (forex) reserves jumped by USD 1.386 billion to all time high USD 341.378 billion in the week ended 27thMarch, as per weekly report published by the RBI.

The jump was mainly due to increase in foreign currency assets which was increased by USD 1.351 billion to USD 316.238 billion in the same week.  Special Drawing Rights and International Monetary Fund (IMF) were also increased by USD 26.2 million and USD 8.5 million respectively in the same week. Gold Reserves remained unchanged at USD 19.837 billion in the same week.

  1. Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal bowed out of the Malaysia Open badminton championship after her close defeat in the semifinal match against top-seeded China-s Li Xuerui. She lost to her by 21-13 17-21 20-22 in a closely fought semifinal match. With this defeat, she will also lose No 1 rank in the Women-s badminton world ranking.

  1. World number one Novak Djokovic won the Miami Open Men's Singles trophy. He defeated Andy Murray for the seventh straight time by 7-6, 4-6, 6-0 in the final match. This was also his fifth Miami Open trophy.

World number one Serena Williams won the Miami Open Women's Singles trophy. She defeated Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro by 6-2 6-0 in the final match to win her eighth Miami Open title.

  1. Indian tennis player Sania Mirza and her Swiss team-mate Martina Hingis won the Miami Open Tennis women's doubles titleafter defeating the second placed Russian pair of Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova by 7-5, 6-1 in the final match. This is their second consecutive title as a team after winning the Indian Wells Open two weeks ago.

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Air Quality Index to track air quality index across 10 cities in the country. The index will inform the public about air quality in a simple and an easily understandable form and would enhance public awareness and involvement in air quality improvement.

The AQI would be available for 10 cities, on a real-time basis. It aims to cover 46 cities in the next couple of years.

  1. Indian Navy's first Scorpene submarine under Project 75 was undocked at the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) today in the presence of the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. The diesel-electric powered Scorpene submarine to be called INS Kalvari and this will undergo extensive sea trials before it will be cleared to formally join the Indian Navy.

India is building six Scorpene submarines with the help of French firm DCNS at Mazagon Dock Limited.

  1. Golden Peacock National Quality Award for the year 2015 conferred on Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL).The award, founded by the Institute of Directors, India in 1991 and are globally regarded as a benchmark of corporate excellence, is given for the best in class quality process.

The National Quality Award Scheme was instituted to encourage total quality improvements in both manufacturing and service organizations in India.

  1. According to the data published by the RBI, Central Bank of India has topped the list of public sector banks with maximum bad loans including restructured assets as a percentage of total advances. As per the list, Central Bank of India has 21.5% loans as either bad assets or has been termed as non-performing assets (NPAs).

The other banks which have significant amount of gross NPAs and restructured loans include, United Bank of India (19.04%), Punjab & Sind Bank (18.25%) and Punjab National Bank with 17.85% as on December 2014.

  1. M Annadurai has been appointed as the new director of ISRO Satellite Centre. Annadurai graduated in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Government College of Technology, Coimbatore and obtained his Post Graduate degree in Applied Electronics from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore and Doctoral degree from Anna University, Coimbatore. He replaced S K Shivakumar.

During the period 1992 -2005, Annadurai was the lead member of ISRO's satellite mission team and managed eight INSAT Missions as the Mission Director.

  1. Rajeev Shukla has been re-appointed chairman of the IPL Governing Council today. Earlier he was was the IPL chairman till 2013 when he resigned after the IPL 'spot-fixing' scandal.Also former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has been inducted into the IPL Governing Council while the senior national selection committee led by Sandeep Patil was retained for another season.

RBI keeps repo rate unchanged at 7.5% during its monetary policy review today
RBI Governor Dr Raghuram Rajan has kept key policy rates unchanged during its first monetary policy review meeting for fiscal year 2015-16 today. Repo rate, the rate at which RBI lends money to banks for the short term, was kept unchanged at 7.5% while the Reverse Repo Rate, the rate at which RBI borrows money from banks, was kept unchanged at 6.5%. The cash reserve ratio for banks has been kept unchanged at 4%.
The RBI has also kept statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) of scheduled commercial banks unchanged at 21.5%. Statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) refers amount that the commercial banks require to maintain with the RBI in the form of gold or government approved securities (G-Secs or bonds) before lending.
Reserve Bank Governor has expressed confidence about meeting inflation target of 6% by January 2016 and projected GDP growth at 7.8% for the current fiscal year 2015-16.

  1. World Health Day (WHD) 2015 was observed on 7th April across the world. The theme for year 2015 was"From farm to plate, make food safe."The theme was selected by the World Health Organization (WHO) to bring focus on growing global burden of food borne diseases and underscore the need for coordinated cross-border action across the entire food supply chain i.e. from farm to plate.

  2. FedEx Corp announced to acquire buy Dutch package delivery firm TNT Express for approximately 4.4 billion euros (USD 4.8 billion).The deal requires regulatory approval for completion. As a part of the deal, FedEx will offer 8 euros in cash per ordinary TNT share.

Post the deal, FedEx will get access to TNT's European road delivery network and TNT customers access to FedEx's global distribution platform.

  1. Prime MinisterNarendra Modi launched Rs 20,000 cr MUDRA (Micro Units Development Refinance Agency) Bank today for small entrepreneurs and business houses in the country. The MUDRA Bank will provide credit of up to Rs 10 lakh to small entrepreneursand act as a regulator for -Micro-Finance Institutions- (MFIs). It will also be responsible for developing and refinancing through a Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana.

  2. Mayilsamy Annadurai has been appointed as Director of ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC). He succeeded Dr SK Shivakumar who superannuated on 31stMarch this year. As the Director of ISAC he will oversee development of satellite technology and implementation of satellite systems for scientific, technological and application missions.

  3. Pratap Singh, a 15 years old Indian-origin student, won the Institute of Physics Prize (IOP) in the UK for his project on special relativity. During his year-long project, He used two Geiger-Müller tubes to detect cosmic ray muons.

  4. India-s e-commerce marketplace Snapdeal acquired India-s fastest growing mobile transaction platform FreeCharge for an undisclosed amount. Post this deal, Snapdeal has become India-s largest mobile commerce firm with 40 million users and the largest mobile transactions base for any company.

Bengaluru-based Freecharge allows users to recharge their mobile phone or internet connections and get coupons as reward for using its service.

  1. Indian Grandmaster Dronavalli Harika won the bronze medal along with Swedish Grandmaster Pia Cramling as she made it to the semi-finals of World Women's chess championship. She lost to the eventual winner Mariya Muzychuk of Ukraine in the semi-finals.

Former Satyam Chairman B Ramalinga Raju and nine others have been convicted guilty for their involvement in the worst ever corporate fraud of Indian history and given a seven-year jail term by the special court.Ramalinga Raju and his brother Rama Raju have also been slapped with a fine ofRs.5 crore each and others Rs.25 lakh each. B Ramalinga Raju had confessed in a letter to the board and stock exchange in January 2009 that he fudged balance sheet of Satyam Computer Services to report inflated numbers.

The 10 accused who have been convicted are - B ramalinga Raju, B Rama Raju, Srinivas Vadlamani, Talluri Srinivas, Gopalakrishna, Suryanarayana Raju, Ramakrishna, Venkatapathi Raju, Srisailam, and Vsd Gupta.

  1. President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed the senior-most Election Commissioner, Dr Nasim Zaidi, as the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). He will succeed incumbent Harishankar Brahma who will retire on April 18thand assume charge from 19thApril.

  2. Chairman & Managing Director of TIL Limited, Sumit Mazumder has been elected as the President of CII for the year 2015-16.He succeeds Ajay Shriram. He is also the Executive Chairman of Tractors India Pvt. Ltd. which is a distributor for Caterpillar, USA, in India, Nepal and Bhutan for earthmoving, construction, mining equipment and power systems.

  3. Hindi poet Gopaldas Neeraj and famous Hindi litterateur Uday Pratap Singh have been awarded with the Sahitya Shiromani Samman by the Uttar Pradesh government. The award carries an award and cash prize of 21 lakh rupees.

  4. Famous Tamil writer and novelist Jayakanthan passed away on 8thApril in Chennai.He was 81. He authored over 35 novels, many short stories and two autobiographies. He was presented with Padma Bhushan award in 2009, Jnanpith award in 2002 and Sahitya Akademi Award in 1972.

  5. Global rating agency Moody's has raised India-s rating outlook from stable to positive with rating affirmed as -Baa3- which is the lowest investment rating. Moody-s said that the actions by policy makers will enhance the India-s economic strength and, in turn, the sovereign's financial strength over coming years and it also expects rating improvement in next 12-18 months.This improvement of outlook has confirmed that India-s macroeconomic prospects are improving.

Another global credit rating agency Fitch has affirmed India's sovereign rating at -BBB-- and has kept the outlook unchanged at -stable-. 'Baa3- and -BBB--are similar rating and indicates last investment grade.

  1. The Reserve Bank notified the decision to raise foreign direct investment (FDI) cap in the insurance sector to 49% from existing cap of 26%.As per the notification, FDI up to 26% will be under automatic route and beyond 26% till 49% will be allowed with the approval of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).

  1. South Korea capital city, Seoul was awarded the title of Global Earth hour Capital 2015 after it won the Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC) of World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Total 163 cities from 16 countries participated in the challenge. Seoul was chosen as the winner by EHCC jury of international experts for its comprehensive approach to tackle climate change and its determination to ramp up use of renewable energy.

  2. Former Australia captain and famous cricket commentator Richie Benaud passed away on 9thApril. He was 84.He was a leg-spin bowler and played in 63 Tests including 28 tests as captain. He retired from International cricket in 1964 in order to focus in journalism and broadcasting.

  1. Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, EPFO has suspended the Rs 1,000 minimum monthly pension scheme from April 2015.The scheme was launched starting from September 2014 which increased pension amount to Rs 1,000 per month for all low earning workers. Post this decision, the beneficiaries will get pension at earlier rates.

  2. World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has named Thane in Maharashtra as the National Earth Hour Capital for year 2015 after it emerged as winneramong the three finalists from India including Thane, Rajkot and Pune, in the Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC) 2015 conducted by World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Coimbatore was selected as the National Earth Hour Capital in 2014.

Thirteen Indian cities had precipitated in the 2015 Earth Hour Challenge. Pune received a special mention from the jury for its city mobility plan and solar and waste-to-energy initiatives while Rajkot was felicitated for the city's performance in the field of renewable energy.

  1. Former Air Chief Marshal Hrushikesh Moolgaonkar passed away after a prolonged illness today. He took over as the Air Chief in 1976 and retired in 1978. He held the honour of leading the fly-past on Independence Day in 1947 and also on the Republic Day in 1951 when he was a Squadron Leader.

Asteroid 316201 was named as -316201 Malala- after the youngest Nobel laureate Pakistan-s Malala Yousafzai. The asteroid was named after her by Amy Mainzer, astronomer at NASA-s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California under the International Astronomical Union rules. Mr. Mainzer had discovered in 2010 the asteroid which was known as 316201.

  2. Mercedes Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton won Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit in China.This was his second win of the season and his fourth Chinese Grand Prix win. His team mate Nico Rosberg secured 2nd place, Ferrari-s Sebastian Vettel finished third and Ferrari-s Kimi Raikkonen finished fourth in the same race. Sergio Perez of Force India team finished 11th in the same race.

  1. India will chair the ninth meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Council which will be held in Abu Dhabi in June this year. India is a founder Member of the IRENA which is an intergovernmental organisation that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future.

IRENA has two main governing structures. IRENA Assembly takes decisions at Macro level and gives policy guidance to IRENA and IRENA Council which is the main governing body of the agency responsible for implementing various decisions of the assembly.

  1. The Indian government has temporarily suspended the registration of Greenpeace India under the foreign contributions law for under-reporting foreign funding and conducting transaction of such funds without informing the authorities as required by the law.The ministry of home affairs froze all seven bank accounts of the organization and served it a show-cause notice seeking explanation why its license should not be cancelled.

  2. Arun Kumar Jha has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC).His appointment was approved by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) of the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

As CEO of KVIC, he will oversee the day-to-day functioning of the commission and report about its activities to the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).

  1. Indian tennis player Sania Mirza created history today by becoming the first Indian female tennis player to achieve the world number one rank in women-s doubles ranking after her Women-s doubles title win at the WTA Family Circle Cup with her partner Martina Hingis.

The top-seeded India-Swiss pair defeated Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurak by 6-0 6-4 in the final match to win the event. With this win, her total points jumped to 7965, crossing Italy's Sara Errani (7640) and Roberta Vinci (7640) to secure No 1 rank.

  1. FamousIndian shooter Jitu Rai won a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Changwon, South Korea today. He won the bronze medal after he scored 181.1 points in the final. Jitu Rai was qualified for the 2016 Olympics after winning won silver in the 50m Free Pistol event in 2014 at the World Championships in Granada, Spain.

  2. Commonwealth Games gold medal medalist Indian shooter Apurvi Chandela qualified for next year's Olympic Games today after winning the 10m air rifle bronze in the ongoing ISSF World Cup (Rifle/Pistol)in Changwon, Korea. She shot a total of 185.6 in the finals to win the silver medal.

  3. India-s Yuki Bhambri won the 15,000 US Dollar ITF Futures tournament title after defeating Dzmitry Zhyrmont by 6-2 6-4 in the final match held at at Karshi, Uzbekistanon 11thApril. With this win, he earned 27 ranking points which will take him to a rank between 215 and 220. It is also his 10th ITF Futures singles title.

  4. Indian hockey team defeated Korea by 4-1 to finish at third position in the 24th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament held at Ipoh, Malaysia today. Earlier, both the teams finished at 2-2 at regulation time.

IIP grew by 5 percent in February
India's Index of Industrial Production, the most important parameter to judge performance of industrial sector, grew by 5% in February compared to 2.6% growth in January.  Manufacturing sector output, which constitutes over 75% of the index, grew by 5.2% in February compared to 3.9% contraction in the same month last year which pushed the overall IIP growth higher.
The cumulative IIP growth for the period April-February of the current financial year 2014-15 stood at 2.8% compared to 0.1% contraction in the same period last year.

  1. German Nobel laureate Guenter Grass passed away in Berlin today. He was 87. Grass authored the book "The Tin Drum," which was published in 1959 for which he was honored with the Nobel Prize for literature in 1999.

Grass helped to revive German culture in the aftermath of World War II and helping to give voice and support to democratic discourse in the post war nation.

  1. New Zealand won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup men-s hockey tournament 2015 after defeating World Champions Australia in the finals at the Sultan Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh, Malaysia. With this New Zealand won the Sultan Azlan Shah for the second time after 2012. India won Bronze medal after securing third position in the trophy.

India-s retail inflation eases to 3-month low of 5.17 percent in March
India's Retail inflation, measured by Consumer Price Index, eased to 3-month low of 5.17% in March compared to 5.37% in February. Consumer Inflation stood at 8.25% in March last year. Overall food inflation declined to 6.14% in March compared to 6.79% in February while retail inflation in the fuel and light segment stood at 5.07% in March.
The urban area retail inflation eased to 4.75% in March compared to 4.95% in February while in rural areas retail inflation eased to 5.58% in March compared to 5.79% in February.

  1. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have also been named in the list of 100 most influential people in the world. Narendra Modi secured 0.6% votes while Kejriwal got 0.5% votes.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been ranked at No1 in the list of this years- Time 100 readers' list of most influential people in the world. He edged out rapper-singer CL to claim the number one spot with 6.95% of the votes in the final tally. Pop stars Lady Gaga (2.6 per cent), Rihanna (1.9 per cent) and Taylor Swift (1.8 per cent) secured the third, fourth and fifth rank in the list respectively.

  1. Following popular outrage against net neutrality violations, Indian e-commerce company Flipkart pulled out of the controversial Airtel Zero preferential access platform. The World Bank has also projected that India-s GDP growth will touch 8% by 2017. As per the World Bank, India-s GDP growth is expected to accelerate to 7.5% in fiscal year 2015-16.
India's overall inflation drops to -2.33 percent in March, negative inflation for fifth consecutive months
India's overall inflation, measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), drops to -2.33% in March compared to -2.06% in February due to drop in prices of food and fuel products. This is the fifth consecutive time, wholesale price index remained in the negative zone. Wholesale inflation stood at 6% in March last year.
Inflation in food articles stood at 6.31% in March compared to 7.74% in the previous month while the rate of inflation for fuel stood at (-) 12.56% in March compared to (-) 14.72% in February. Also the rate of inflation for manufactured products dropped to (-).19% in the same month compared to 0.33% in February. With deflation for five consecutive months, RBI should cut rates now in order to boost both economic and industrial growth.

  1. Canada and India have signed a series of agreements including Uranium delivery from Canada and easy visas for Canadian travelers by Indian government. Under an agreement signed between Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Harper,Cameco Corporation will supply 3,000 metric tonnes of uranium over five years to India for USD 254 million. These supplies will be under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards.

The indigenously developed surface-to-Surface missile has a strike range of 3,000 km range and carry nuclear weapons up to 1.5 tonnes.

  2. Six Janata Parivar parties have been merged into a single party under the leadership of Samajwadi Party President Mulayam Singh. The new party will have a strength of 15 members in the Lok Sabha and 30 in the Rajya Sabha. The new party will be the third largest bloc behind the Congress (68) and the BJP (47) in the Rajya Sabha.

  3. Union Government has constituted a task force on interlinking of rivers in the country which will be headed by former Secretary of Ministry of Water Resources B N Navalawala. The task force will consider alternative plans in case of infeasible links in the present National Perspective Plan (NPP) apart from examining the existing links which are laid out as per the NPP under both Himalayan and Peninsular components. It will also facilitate interlinking of intra-basin and intra-state Rivers, along with that of inter-state and inter-basin links.

Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has renamed Tourist Visa on Arrival-Electronic Travel Authorization scheme (TVoA-ETA) to e-Tourist Visa from 15thApril 2015, as suggested by a committee of officers from the External Affairs Ministry, MHA and Bureau of Immigration. e-Tourist Visa Scheme is a pre-authorization of Visa to foreigners that being given prior to travel. TVoA-ETA was launched in November 2014 in order to boost tourism which had enabled Electronic Travel Authorization to 44 countries at nine airports across India.

Online restaurant guide Zomato acquired MaplePOS, a cloud-based point of sale product for restaurants developed by a group of techies from Delhi. Post this acquisition, Zomato renamed the MaplePOS product to 'Zomato Base' which will help the company and its restaurant partners to manage business into online orders and payments.

MaplePos offers various features of restaurants such as inventory and menu management, and has in-built payment solution to accept debit and credit card payments.

  1. The Reserve Bank of India has allowed banks to offer differential interest rates based on whether the term deposits are with or without-premature-withdrawal-facility, subject to conditions. All term deposits of individuals (held singly or jointly) of Rs. 15 lakh and below should, necessarily, have premature withdrawal facility.

With this suspension, Indian para-athletes will not be able to participate in any IPC-sanctioned competition, including 2016 Paralympic Games at Rio de Janeiro.

Ashish Jakhar set a national youth record in boys- hammer throw event and won gold medal in the 12th National Youth Athletics Championships held in Bambolim, Goa.He had hurled 5kg ball-and-chain at record distance of 72.04 metres in a second throw which made a national youth record. With this, he broke the previous national record of 70.35 metres which was set by Sukhdev Singh in 2009.

  1. The centralgovernment has decided to discontinue two awards named after former Prime Ministers of India Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. Those awards were conferred until last year to people based on outstanding work for promoting the progressive use of Hindi language.

Two new awards schemes named as the Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar and Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar were introduced for propagating the national language. 'Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Puruskar' was renamed to Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar; and "Rajiv Gandhi Rashtriya Gyan-Vigyan Maulik Pustak Lekhan Puraskar" renamed to Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar Yojana'.

  1. Indian Railways has launched an online monitoring mechanism named as 'E - Samiksha" which aims to monitor implementation of various ongoing projects of Indian Railways on real-time basis including Rail Budget proposals.

Designed by National Informatics Centre (NIC), it was launched by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in New Delhi. It was developed to make it a highly interactive web-based, user-friendly and customized system.

  1. Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved to reduce of age of juveniles from 18 to 16 years for heinous crimes including murder and rape. The cabinet also approved to introduce Amendment to the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, 2014.This amendment will propose and add special provisions to tackle heinous offences like murder and rape committed by juveniles in the age group of 16-18 years.

The amendments in the bill adds provisions that in case a heinous crime committed by a person between 16 and 18 years, it will be examined by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) to assess if the crime was committed as a child or as an adult.

  1. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has approved Uttarakhand-s Rajaji National Park as India's 48th Tiger Reserve. This is now Uttarakhand-s second tiger reserve after the Corbett Tiger Reserve. The park is a home to 315 bird species, 40 species of reptiles and fish and 400 Asian elephants.

  2. National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) will be headed by Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu. The Commission, will be constituted by the center, is a body responsible for the appointment and transfer of judges to the higher judiciary in India.

The Commission is established by amending the Constitution of India through the ninety-ninth constitution amendment vide the Constitution (Ninety-Ninth Amendment) Act, 2014 passed by the Parliament in August last year.

  1. A powerful earthquake measuring 7.9 on Richter scale struck Nepal and some Indian states in North and North-east Indian today. Nearly 900 people were killed and over 1000 people were injured in the natural calamity.Kathmandu's Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was completely damaged in the quake. The nearly two-century old 9-storey landmark Dharhara tower in the centre of the capital collapsed and several people are feared trapped.

The Reserve Bank has revised priority sector lending norms to ensure a phased increase in loans to small farmers and to make smaller foreign banks to meet the 40% target over the next five years.Under the new guidelines, credit to small and marginal farmers should be 8% of a bank's total credit by March 2017.

The RBI also said overdrafts of up to Rs 5,000 being extended by banks under the PM's new financial inclusion drive will also be treated as priority sector lending (PSL), subject a cap on annual household income which is Rs 1 lakh for rural and Rs 1.60 lakh for non-rural households.

It seeks to amend the RRB Act, 1976 which mainly provides for the incorporation, regulation and winding up of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs). The amendments include removal of the five year limit cap that was put on the sponsor banks to assist the upcoming RRBs under the RRB Act, 1976. As per the Act, sponsor banks were liable to train personnel and provide managerial and financial assistance for the first five years.

  3. The World Bank has projected India's GDP growth rate at 7.5% for the current fiscal year 2015-16. As per the World Bank India Development update report, India's GDP growth rate expected to increase to 7.5% cent in 2015-16 and to 7.9% in 2016-17 and 8% in 2017-18.The government of India has projected India's GDP growth rate at 8.5% in the current financial year.

  4. Indian e-commerce Company and Online marketplace Flipkart has acquired Delhi-based mobile engagement and marketing automation company Appiterate. Appiterate is a full-fledged mobile marketing automation platform which was launched as an A/B testing product for native mobile apps. Post this deal, Appiterate's mobile marketing automation platform will be integrated into Flipkart-s mobile app.

  5. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has nominated Indian batsman Rohit Sharma for this year Arjuna Award.The Arjuna Awards was instituted in 1961, which is given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, government of India to recognize outstanding achievement in National sports.

  6. Railways defeated Uttar Pradesh Hockey team by 5-3 in the final match to win the Senior Men's National Hockey championship held recently. Air India Sports Promotion Board defeated Hockey Gangpur-Odisha by 5-3 to secure third place in the tournament.

  7. Famous Marathi film and stage actress, Shanta alias Bimba Modak, passed away in Pune. She was 97. She made her debut in the film "Chulaani Mul" in 1946 which was directed by noted playwright and writer Vishram Bedekar.She was also honoured with a lifetime award by Maharashtra government in 1980.
